AT&T aims to have developers pay for app bandwidth usage
At an interview during the Mobile World Congress going on in Spain this week, AT&T executive John Donovan told the Wall Street Journal that the company is apparently hoping to have app developers pick up some of the cost of network usage. The whole idea sounds kind of dumb, but obviously AT&T wants to make more and more money off of the climbing amounts of network usage, and one idea they've had is to have app developers subsidize the cost of that data. Intel reportedly delays Ivy Bridge launch until June, manufacturing process to blame
Looking forward to splurging for some tech decked out with Ivy Bridge? Well, you may have to wait a bit longer. Financial Times is reporting that Intel's new 22nm processor has been pushed from April to June. TI reveals more OMAP 5 details at MWC 2012
Well, if our hands-on at CES didn't sell you on TI's next-gen OMAP 5 platform, perhaps some more specs revealed recently at MWC 2012 will. Dell CEO: we're 'not really a PC company'
Dell's namesake, CEO Michael Dell, made a symbolic statement at an enterprise launch event that his company wasn't really a PC builder. He argued to a San Francisco audience including Forbes that his company, which started off making custom PCs, was "not really a PC company" and instead that it was an "end-to-end IT company that really understands the needs of its customers." Pyle debuts 300-watt iOS sound bar docking system
Home, car and recreational audio equipment maker Pyle has unveiled its new PSBM60I iOS Sound Bar Docking System that both charges the devices and uses them to deliver up to 300 watts of sound utilizing a 5.25-inch woofer, two three-inch full-range speakers and two one-inch tweeters. Apple launches 'Developer ID' program in prep for OS X 10.8
Apple is launching a new initiative called "Developer ID," an email notice informs. "The Mac App Store is the safest place for users to get software for their Mac, but we also want to protect users when they download applications from other places," Apple writes. "Developer ID is a new way to help prevent users from installing malware on their Mac. Along with Gatekeeper, a new feature in Mountain Lion, signing applications with your Developer ID certificate provides users with the confidence that your application is not known malware and has not been tampered with."

Apple working to resolve Evi situation, sources say
Apple is looking to resolve the situation with Evi without kicking the title off of the App Store entirely, a report says. Citing "sources familiar with the matter," The Verge claims that Apple is currently working with developer True Knowledge to iron out offending similarities to Siri, the voice command system on the iPhone 4S. It has allegedly become standard practice for Apple to "flag" an app that could be confusing and then cooperate with its creators.

Motorola pits Siri against Android Voice Actions in duels
Motorola Mobility has released three videos that illustrate the performance advantage offered by Android Voice Actions compared to the iPhone 4S' Siri feature. PowerVR raytracing demos at MWC, SGX543MP2 on more gear soon
Imagination Technologies outlined some plans for its far and near futures after Electronista stopped by its Mobile World Congress booth on Monday. The PowerVR developer showed a demo of a real-time raytracing graphics engine, where an app calculates the paths of individual light beams in a scene, that it expects to reach mobile devices. As shown in a demo running on a Mac, it could use surface properties rather than unchanging textures to generate the chrome effect on a car, even reflecting another car which in turn had a reflection of the sky.

Apple genius reportedly stole $16K worth of iPhones
When I worked in retail, I quickly learned all about "loss prevention," which is the program that most retailers undertake to try and (you guessed it) prevent loss of product at whatever store they're running. Customer theft is obviously an issue anywhere you have merchandise sitting out in public, but an even bigger issue, surprisingly, is employee theft. And Apple isn't immune: Recently, an employee allegedly stole up to 25 phones at an Apple Store in Charlotte, North Carolina. The phones were taken out of a back room over about a month and a half in December and January, with the employee apparently just taking them out of the store. RealVNC teams up with Sony to bring Android apps to the dashboard
Sony and RealVNC have announced a partnership that aims to liberate your smartphone's applications and content, bringing the wares to your car's dashboard. Once a VNC-enabled vehicle and Android handset are paired, users can access and manipulate the device's applications, music library and stream web content directly to the car's infotainment system. In order to preserve public safety, and meet "regulatory requirements," the system can detect vehicle velocity and will revoke the proverbial keys to your mobile kingdom while you're in motion. AT&T strategy would let companies foot data bills
AT&T's CTO John Donovan in an interview Monday raised the prospect of an alternate if controversial model to footing the bills for 4G data use. The plan mentioned at Mobile World Congress to the Wall Street Journal would let a company volunteer to pay for some or all of the data usage of an app. It would theoretically let users get data-heavy apps like streaming media guilt-free, knowing that they wouldn't run over their cap or face throttling for using it.

Proview amends US iPad lawsuit with new claims
Proview has amended its California lawsuit against Apple with new claims about the latter party's alleged fraud. Newly referenced is the managing director of Farncombe International, Graham Robinson, who Proview says was instrumental in helping Apple create IP Application Development (IPAD) Limited, the firm which bought rights to the iPad trademark in December 2009. Robinson is said to have used an alias when negotiating with Proview Taiwan -- Jonathan Hargreaves -- and moreover dodged questions from Proview about the nature of IPAD's business.

iMac Wi-Fi Update 1.0 resolves wake from sleep issue
On Friday, Apple released iMac Wi-Fi Update 1.0, a small 1.3 MB update that is recommended for all iMacs (late 2009 and newer) running OS X 10.7.3. This appears to be a very specific update to resolve a very specific issue -- there's no other word from Apple on additional issues with iMac Wi-Fi that may have been occurring. Best Buy pulling iPad 2 from display to make way for iPad 3?
Pretty much all signs point to the arrival of a new iPad in the very near future -- in fact, more specific reports have the tablet getting the official unveil next week. With that in mind, it certainly makes sense that a store like Best Buy would be taking the last gen product off its displays. Apple's China audits don't inspire the same from other companies
As TUAW has reported previously, Apple is working with the Fair Labor Association on a study of working conditions at supplier factories. AT&T service in the works to let app developers pay for users' data use
AT&T has been making news all over MWC in the past couple of days. The most recent report from The Wall Street Journal says that Ma Bell is planning a service that will enable app devs and other content providers to pay the carrier for subscriber's data usage. Panasonic, DoCoMo, NEC and Fujitsu create IP for multi-standard LSI chip; supports LTE, GSM, W-CDMA and HSPA+

FBI deactivates about 3,000 GPS tracking devices, loses sight of your car
Following a January ruling by the US Supreme Court, the FBI has deactivated some 3,000 GPS units that were potentially infringing on the Fourth Amendment. The decision seems to be making waves in the U.S. Justice Department. Andrew Weissmann, FBI General Counsel, says some of the devices have been difficult to retrieve, as the vehicles they were once tracking now move undetected. Intel's Medfield-based Android smartphones have been buzzed about for sometime now, but until this past CES, we hadn't actually seen one of these unicorns en vivo. No longer, as the chip manufacturer outed a trio of those very handsets today at its MWC event. Of particular note is the Xolo by Lava, a 4.03-inch, single-core unit running a mostly stock build of Gingerbread and destined for the Indian market. Apple theatens to pull Evi from App Store over Siri likeness
Apple is threatening to pull a Siri-like app called Evi from the App Store, according to the app's developer, True Knowledge. The latter company says that on Friday, Apple representative Richard Chipman called and explained that Apple was "going to pull Evi from the App Store," based on the title's parallels with Siri. As of this writing, though, Evi is still on sale for about 99 cents, and has managed over 200,000 downloads.

Motorola kann Verkauf von Apples 3G-Geräten vorerst nicht stoppen
Anfang des Monat hatte Apple den Verkauf von seinen 3G-fähigen iOS-Geräten mit Ausnahme des iPhone 4S für wenige Stunden aufgrund eines Gerichtsurteils stoppen müssen. Wie das Oberlandesgericht Karlsruhe heute entschieden hat, wird Motorola dies in naher Zukunft nicht erneut gelingen.

Orange Santa Clara packs Intel power, we go hands-on at MWC 2012
Hot on the heels of Intel's big event, we've finally got our hands on Orange's Medfield smartphone. The Santa Clara is powered by the Intel Atom Z2460 1.6GHz processor, clocked at 1.6GHz. It does have 2011's Gingerbread kind of Android, but Orange is promising to bring ICS to the phone soon after launch -- in fact an Intel spokesperson told us that it's already had Android 4.0 running on these devices. It's tremendously impressive and to a lesser degree a bit frustrating. Let's start with the good stuff, because there's plenty of it. Getting a sophisticated photo app running on the iPad is no small task. It requires many controls and a lot of ways to complete tasks that differ from their counterparts on the desktop. Apple scored a legal victory against Motorola in a case involving a standards essential (FRAND) patent that Motorola must license to other companies on fair terms. Apple wins overturn on German ban against iPhones, iPads
Apple has won a ruling in a German appeals court, undoing a temporary ban secured by Motorola on some iPhone and iPad models in the country, according to Bloomberg. The court says that Motorola must accept a recently-revised licensing offer from Apple. "At the current state of the proceedings, it is to be assumed that Motorola Mobility would violate its duties under antitrust rules if it continues to ask Apple to stop the sales," a court statement reads.

Olympus board resigns after naming new CEO and board chair
At its meeting on Monday, the entire board of directors at Olympus has resigned. As its last act, the the board named Hiroyuki Sasa, 56, as its next president. Vimeo für iOS jetzt mit nativer iPad-Unterstützung
Schon seit einiger Zeit gab es eine offizielle iOS-App für das beliebte Video-Portal Vimeo im App Store. Dieser fehlte aber bis heute eine native iPad-Oberfläche. Mit der neuen Version der kostenlosen App steht diese ab sofort den iPad-Nutzern zur Verfügung.
Neben der iPad-Oberfläche, die es beispielweise erlaubt, gleichzeitig einen Clip zu schauen, während man nach anderen Videos sucht, wurde auch die iPhone-Version einer Frischzellenkur unterzogen. Die Vimeo-App unterstützt natürlich auch das Streamen von Videos an Apple TV mit Hilfe von AirPlay.

Carrier subsidies crippling iPhone sales in parts of Europe
Apple's dependence on high carrier subsidies for the iPhone is giving Android devices an advantage in parts of Europe, especially the south, suggests research firm IDC. The group notes that Apple had over 20 percent of the US and UK smartphone markets last year. But in Greece and Portugal, two of the countries hardest hit by European economic problems, the iPhone took just 5 and 9 percent shares, respectively. Shipments of smartphones costing over $300 before subsidies dipped below 50 percent in those countries.

ZTE's newly announced PF200 was also on hand at MWC 2012, though, unfortunately this handset wouldn't boot up. Powered by a Qualcomm 1.2Ghz dual-core processor, running Android 4.0, with a 4.3-inch qHD display, 8 megapixel af camera, WiFi, DLNA, and even NFC. The PF200 like the N910 if obviously showing its inexpensive price point through the size and quality of the housing and the choices in construction materials. Motorola kann FRAND-Patente nicht für Verkaufsverbot gegen Apple nutzen

Google touts 450K Android apps, nearing iOS offerings
Google's fun-filled booth at Mobile World Congress means to celebrate the more than tripling of the available apps in the Android Market since last year, currently at more than 450,000. In comparison, Apple's iOS mobile platform offers more than 500,000 applications. Google goes on to say there are more than one billion apps downloaded by Android users every month as well. More than 800 unique devices run on Android, and the software giant brought more than 100 to display at the show.

ZTE's other handset launch of note at MWC this year was the PF112 (pictured at right next to SGS 2.) First take away here was the 4.5-inch 1028 x 720 HD display which was really bright and clear -- and again we were a little shocked by the dichotomy in build quality of the sets we're seeing from ZTE. Quad-band GSM radios, triple-band HSPA+ were on hand as well as an 8 megapixel rear-facing cam, all the wireless connectivity one could ask for and even an FM radio thrown in for good measure. Daily iPhone App: Zoo Sounds 3 lets your toddler laugh and learn about animals
I'm always looking for educational and fun games that are appropriate for the younger set. Even though the App Store is filled with games, it's not that easy finding quality titles designed for the dexterity and abilities of three and four-year-olds. One game that fits this bill is Zoo Sounds from Tantrum Apps. Zoo Sounds, now on version 3, teaches children about animals and their sounds. It's filled with fifteen different animals that children can learn to identify using several mini-games. Sonnetar 25mm f/1.1 lens coming with Micro Four Thirds mount
Just what the optician ordered: a prototype Micro Four Thirds 25mm lens that will put just 1.1 f-stops between you and a beautiful photograph. It's the work of specialist fast-glass maker Sadoyasu Miyazaki, who manufactures under the Sonnetar brand and is well know for his hand-assembled primes. Apple scores temporary ruling in Motorola battle, can keep selling iPads, iPhones in Germany
Apple today won a victory in Germany in its on-going legal dispute with Motorola Mobility. An appeals court in that country ruled that Cupertino can continue to offer its wares in its online store while it appeals a ruling that temporarily barred their sale. According to the court, the continuation of such a ban on iPads and iPhones would affect Motorola's abilities to maintain its "duties under antitrust rules." Apple has aired a new iCloud commercial, Harmony. It demonstrates how photos, iTunes and iBooks purchases and contact information is automatically shared across compatible devices. You even get a glimpse at my favorite feature: fiddle with an iCal event in one location and it's changed everywhere else. It ends with the tagline "Automatic. Everywhere. iCloud." The spot is cute and effective, demonstrating iCloud features without being a pest about it. Plus the music is so darn catchy.

ZTE 910 hands-on at MWC 2012
ZTE's LTE FDD, CDMA, EVDO-enabled N910 -- we've also seen it referred to as the N91 -- also popped up at Mobile World Congress, so we gave it a quick once over. The spec sheet isn't bursting with this set but it does pack an 800 x 480 display, 5 megapixel autofocus camera, a 1080p capable front-facing lens, WiFi, Bluetooth, and of course its running Android 4. The N910 is a pretty thick handset as its posterior is a rounded affair, though, it feels hollow, and is impossibly light. Unfortunately for us -- and you -- it refused to power on during our brief visit, even after 10 minutes or so of charging. Daily iPad App: Final Fantasy Tactics
Final Fantasy Tactics first came out for the original PlayStation in 1997 as a more strategic take on the famous roleplaying game franchise. I didn't get around to playing it until 2001, but when I did, it turned out to be a peerless game that still ranks among my all-time favorites. Between a deep combat and character growth system that satisfied the stat nerd in me and an extremely well-crafted, almost Shakespearean story, the original PlayStation version consumed a solid two months of my free time 11 years ago. In 2007 I was excited to hear it was being re-released with an updated translation and some other tweaks, but I was then disappointed to hear that it would be exclusive to the PSP, a system I never had any interest in owning.

ZTE Mimosa X hands-on
ZTE's oddly named -- like most of its sets, honestly -- Mimosa X doesn't bring to mind bubbly champagne breakfast drinks, but it does have a glossy display and Android 4. Packing niceties such as a Tegra2 1.2Ghz processor, 4.3 qHD 960 x 540 display, 8-megapixel camera with 1080p vid recording capability, and HD voice it seems a pretty well aligned device as far as specs go. We immediately noticed that the housing quality is a little weak -- specifically the handset's textured rear -- though, we're hopeful that will be reflected in its sticker price. ZTE showed up to Barcelona and Mobile World Congress with briefcases overflowing with handsets, we stopped to have a peek at its newest which features a quad-core CPU: the Era. Running the Tegra 3 quad-core processor at 1.3Ghz with an Icera i450 HSPA+ modem, 4.3-inch qHD display, an 8-megapixel camera that'll shoot 1080p video and all that stuffed into a 7.8mm-thin metallic housing. Remember the ZTE Tania? Well, the Orbit has similar specs, a nicer name and is destined for "major markets" around the world. There's a 4-inch 800 x 480 screen, a single-core 1GHz Qualcomm processor, 5-megapixel camera, 4GB of onboard storage and a full 512MB of RAM. HSDPA data flows at up to 7.2Mbps, while there's also an FM radio, a full complement of sensors, DLNA and NFC. Even more than raw specs, what makes the phone striking are its accompanying accessories. Sure, you could use it as a standalone 4.3-inch handset, but i will also be sold with a so-called station that effectively turns it into a 10-inch tablet -- not unlike how you can slip certain Moto handsets inside the company's netbook-like Lapdocks. We're just about to get hands-on with ZTE's latest high-spec ICS phone, the Era, but in the meantime here's a heads-up on the main credentials. Speziell am 202 ist die Möglichkeit SIM-Karten im laufenden Betrieb auszutauschen. 40 Spiele sind dabei. Das 302 bekommt zusätzlich Microsoft Exchange Support. Broadcom's taken the chance to bust out some killer new internals for Android phones here at MWC. The new range of SoCs are optimized for Ice Cream Sandwich, based on single or dual-core 40-nanometer ARM Cortex A9s. Nachdem ein Foto eines iPad-3-Logic-Board mit A5X-Prozessor aufgetaucht war, herrschte auf Gerüchteseiten großes Rätselraten, was dies für die A6-Entwicklung zu bedeuten hat. MWC: Lumia 900 bekommt LTE Zuwachs und weiße Version

In Canada bekommt das Lumia 900 von Nokia jetzt Nachwuchs mit einer LTE-Version. Dual-HSPA+ ist für den Rest der Welt. Obendrein ist es jetzt mit einer Front-Kamera ausgestattet und nicht nur Nokia Drive ist fest installiert, sondern auch Nokia Reading. Und eine weiße Version ist wie ihr sehen könnt jetzt auch dabei. Intel bestätigt Verzögerungen bei "Ivy Bridge"-Prozessoren
Nachdem es bisher nur ein Gerücht war, dass sich die Prozessoren auf Basis der "Ivy Bridge"-Architektur verzögern, wurde dies von Intels Vizepräsident Sean Maloney gegenüber der Financial Times bestätigt. Nokia unveils Lumia 610, arriving Q2
Another addition to la familia Nokia has been revealed. The Lumia 610 looks to be its entry level Windows Phone, going by the company's current naming convention, and will pack 256MB of RAM alongside an auto-focus camera. Nokia also used its latest Windows Phone to demonstrate Nokia Transport; a new app that will draw on tram, train and bus directions for around 500 cities and 46 countries. Nokia grows Lumia 900 family: Canada gets LTE, HSPA+ for everyone else
Well, that AT&T exclusivity was bound to wear off at some point. Nokia just confirmed that an LTE version of its flagship Lumia 900 will be crossing the border into Canada in April, running on Rogers' network, while a dual-carrier HSPA+ flavor will be hopping the Atlantic sometime in Q2. Qualcomm unleashes Snapdragon S4 'Pro' chip with superior graphics
The standard version of the S4, aka the MSM8960, has already garnered a lot of benchmark-backed respect -- not least in some of HTC's latest handsets. It's a true next-gen SoC is every respect except one: it's Adreno 225 GPU is simply a souped-up, higher-clocked version of the older Adreno 220. Qualcomm has a plan though: an MSM8960 "Pro" chip that incorporates Adreno 320 graphics and is expected to reach the market in the second half of 2012. Samsung's announced another 10.1-inch tablet to join its burgeoning collection of slates. The Galaxy Note 10.1 is an S-Pen toting variant of the similarly sized-and-named Galaxy Tab. Marvell intros multi-mode LTE and TD-HSPA+ modems, new CPU
Marvell helped kick off Mobile World Congress with a pair of important cellular chipsets and a new mobile processor to match. The PXA1802 is one of the first cellular chips that can talk both to a conventional 4G LTE base station as well as the TD-LTE used on China Mobile and some North American carriers, even up to LTE's peak 150Mbps speed. It can connect to TD-SCDMA for China Mobile smartphones, although Marvell told Electronista it could also be used for pure data on a hotspot or tablet.

After a brief false start, Adobe has posted Photoshop Touch for the iPad 2 ($10, App Store). The finished app provides many of the requested creative features from the desktop version, such as layer editing and filters, while adding in elements that wouldn't be possible on the desktop. Orange announces first Intel-powered Android phone for Europe, codenamed Santa Clara
Orange will be the first to offer a Medfield-powered Android phone in Europe. Codenamed Santa Clara, and arriving some time this summer, it looks pretty similar to Intel's reference model -- in both design and specs. The phone totes a 4-inch 600 x 1024 display, with a solid 8-megapixel camera capable of 1080p video and burst capture of up to 10 shots within a second.
