Polaroid plans Spectrum 7-, 8- and 9-inch ICS tablets for 2012 launch
Hey, remember that Polaroid mystery tablet that sneaky tipster spotted on the showfloor? We managed to snag some more details about the slate -- and its brethren -- today. The company will be launching three tablets under the Spectrum name this year -- the Spectrum 7, 8, and 9, each with screens about as big as you suspect, given the fairly straight forward numbering system. Otherwise, the specs look pretty similar on the three tablets, including a Cortex A8 1GHz processor, front and rear-facing cameras and between 4- and 16GB of external storage, expandable via a microSD slot. The company has also promised that the tabs will be rocking Android 4.0 when they ship before year's end.

Nyko Kindle Fire power case, Vita speaker stand hands-on
When you've got a bad case of the short-battery life blues, Nyko, it seems, is almost always around to augment your troubles away. We hoped to drop by the outfit's CES booth to see if it's upcoming Vita Power Grip could do for Sony's next generation portable as it did for Nintendo's 3DS, but we were told that the grip wasn't quite ready for prime-time. Instead, we got a look at a pair of Nyko speaker stands for the PlayStation Vita and the Kindle Fire, as well as a battery powered case for Amazon's slate. The PSV's speaker stand is what you'd expect -- an iPod dock for the PlayStation Vita -- but the Kindle Fire varient is a bit more substantial, packing a onboar

Q4 PC shipments drop 1.4 percent; Apple sees best US growth
In spite of two previous quarters of gains, computer industry shipments slipped 1.4 percent in Q4 2011 to 92.2 million units, according to preliminary Gartner estimates. The research firm had been forecasting a 1 percent drop. "Continuously low consumer PC demand resulted in weak holiday PC shipments," analyst Mikako Kitagawa is quoted as saying. "While economic uncertainty in Western Europe had an effect on consumer PC shipments, expectations of a healthier economic outlook in North America could not stimulate consumer PC demand in that region. Kanex at 2012 CES: Charging Station for Multiple iPads
It may not be a necessary addition for the average home user, but Kanex’s Sydnee definitely stuck out at the 2012 International CES. This docking station—which will be available for$149—allows users to charge up to four devices at once off of its four 2.1A USB ports. That means that it can fully power that many iPads at full speed, but iPhones and iPods are also supported. There’s also a built-in cable management system, although…

iPod shuffle debuted on this day in 2005
On January 11, 2005, Apple introduced the iPod shuffle to the world.
Designed as a way to enjoy music while exercising, the shuffle brought random play of music to the iPod. The first edition of this device looked remarkably like a white stick of gum, featuring no display or scroll wheel, and plugging right into a USB port for syncing. It was also the first Apple iPod to do away with an internal hard drive, using only flash memory to store music.
Since that time, the iPod shuffle has been transformed several times. The first change in September, 2006 turned the device into a small clip-like device similar to the iPod shuffle we know and love today. The third-generation shuffle, which was introduced in March of 2009, took small siz

TUAW TV Live at 5 PM ET: Music, books, and apps
There's a surprising dearth of Apple-related news this week, other than pundits talking about how almost every company at CES is copying Apple's innovations in one way or another. No worries -- if you're depressed hearing about the latest cheesy MacBook Air clone or some other company's iPad ripoff, I'll cheer you up this afternoon with another episode of TUAW TV Live.
Looking into the box of goodies here at the TUAW TV Live studio, I find that I have a pocket-sized analog synthesizer that can be used to process output from an iPad, iPhone or musica

Belkin partners with MCV to bring mobile TV to iOS
Through a new partnership with Mobile Content Venture, Belkin has announced it will be creating hardware that enables smartphone and tablet users to watch live broadcast programming. Shown at CES as a prototype, the mobile DTV accessory connects to an iOS device through the Dock Connector and streams a TV signal without the need for an Internet connection. A standard 3.5mm audio jack is also included, making it unclear if the device will allow audio to be streamed through the device's built-in speaker.

Griffin's Helo TC Assault chopper lets you act out your Airwolf fantasies on the cat
It's not just a big stetson that Griffin's rocking up with at CES, it's also packing some brand new gear for the warm climes of Nevada. First up is the wonderfully childish update to last summer's Helo TC Assault RC Helicopter that'll provide you hours of fun (misery for your children / co-workers) thanks to its ability to fire missiles. An infra-red flight deck plugs into your iDevice's headphone jack and will let you control it using its touch interface or using your internal gyroscope. We know it'll cost $60, just ten dollars more for the ability to conduct bombing runs on

"Ask Different" welcomes your Apple questions
Most of the people savvy enough to be reading an Apple tech blog are probably the ones who get asked a lot of computer-related questions by family and friends. Perhaps you provided tech support over the holidays. But what happens when you have a question? Who can you ask for help?
My favorite spot for Apple Q&A is Ask Different, which is part of the Stack Exchange network of sites. I've only been using it for a few months, but unlike all of the other "help forums" I have used in the past, this is one I return to almost every day, because it's better.

T-Mobile didn't get the iPhone because of its unique 3G bands
T-Mobile CEO Philipp Humm talked to Ina Fried of AllThingsD at CES this week about a variety of topics, including the iPhone. Humm confirmed what we all assumed -- T-Mobile didn't get the iPhone because of its unique 3G technology. "The key reason we didn't have the iPhone in the past is we are on different band than globally the market was," said Humm.
Unlike other carriers which use the 850, 900, 1900 or 2100 MHz frequencies, T-Mobile uses the 1700/2100 MHz AWS band for its 3G. Handsets must have a specific chipset with this unique 3G UMTS band to operate on T-Mobile's network. While many manufacturers use this particular chipset and produce phones specifically for T-Mobile, Apple does n

Polaroid SC1630 Android HD smart camera hands-on, is it a cameraphone or a phonecamera?
The camera modules in smartphones continually improve, and these days there are phones like the iPhone 4S and the Nokia N9 who can take snapshots as good -- and sometimes better -- than point-and-shoots. Polaroid's known for making cameras, but its newest device, a rebrand of the Aigo A8 we saw at CES last year, flips the script by taking a 16 megapixel point-and-shoot and shoving an Android phone inside.

ESI 250 deskphone wants to make business smartphones easy (hands-on)
Over at Showstoppers, ESI offered up an Android-based desktop phones hoping to bring the world of Google's OS kicking and screaming onto a business desk near you. The ESI 250 runs on Android Froyo (2.2), with a XX-inch color display capable of running a limited bunch of (ESI-vetted) third-party Android apps like Evernote, text messaging and visible voicemail and reminders.
Looks-wise, aside from the touchscreen, it's business as usual. The Android interface is a little sluggish, although our major issue , we'd prefer to be handling Gingerbread by now, if not Ice Cream Sandwich. The enterprise phone is pegged for a Q2 launch, with prices pegged at a suitably business-like price of $300 per unit.

Spanish tablet maker NT-K claims extortion by Apple
Nuevas Tecnologias y Engergías Catalá (NT-K) has filed charges against Apple in Spain, alleging that the company went too far in its ultimately-unsuccessful 2010 patent litigation and crossed the line into extortion, FOSS Patents reports. The company, which manufactures its own Android-based tablet with a familiar look, won a case brought against it by Apple accusing the company of counterfeiting, but did suffer a short-term customs ban.

Highlighting RIM's presence at CES 2012 is the official unveiling of PlayBook OS 2.0. Sony's Kaz Hirai: no PlayStation 4 at E3
It looks like you can officially put any hopes of a PlayStation 4 announcement at E3 to rest. In a roundtable with reporters at CES, Sony's Kaz Hirai responded to a question about recent comments attributed to gaming division head Andrew House by stating that "Andy is absolutely right in that we are not making any announcements at E3." As The Wall Street Journal reports, Hirai further added that he's "always said a 10-year life cycle for PS3, and there is no reason to go away from that." That ten-year life cycle would place the PS3's end-of-life around 2016, but as with the PS2 and PS3, we'd expect some overlap between the PS3 an

We got our first glimpse of Verizon's latest LTE family member, the LG Spectrum, yesterday at the manufacturer's event. Razer's Project Fiona hands-on (video)
Breaking ground in the nearly nonexistent market of hardcore gaming tablet with renders is interesting, but there's nothing quite grasping something tangible. Razer's project Fiona, for example, is something to grasp -- sporting twin joystick handles on either side, it begs to be held. We couldn't help but oblige, and dropped by Razer's CES booth for a few minutes with the bold Windows 8 slab. Razer CEO Min-Liang Tan gave us the skinny -- read on get it yourself.

Spotted: the elusive 15-inch Samsung Series 9
Though we got to spend several weeks poking around the redesigned, 13-inch Series 9 laptop, we never did get to handle the new 15-inch version. It's a matter of particular curiosity for us, not just because yours truly has a minor laptop obsession, but because we've never seen anything quite this thin with quite this expansive a display. So, we couldn't resist a little playtime when we stumbled upon it at Samsung's CE

It may not turn the heads of anyone who needs the latest and greatest phone -- let alone most smartphone users -- but Emporia Telecom's not going after that market.
