Samsung reveals 15- and 17-inch Series 5 laptops to arrive during back-to-school season
Is it ever too early to trot out back-to-school laptops? Not if you're Samsung. Here at CES, hidden among the company's razor-thin Series 9 laptops and bright yellow gaming rig we found two mid-range laptops built for students, and other folks who just want something affordable and capable. What we have here are a pair of redesigned Series 5 notebooks, with 15.6- and 17.3-inch displays, respectively. And particularly given that they'll start at about $799 and max out around $1,199, they'r

Toshiba Camileo Air10 hands-on revisited: with sample video
We've already gotten our hands on Toshiba's Camileo Air10, but there was one crucial ingredient missing from our initial impressions -- an actual glimpse at how clips recorded with the device turned out. We swung by the company's booth on the floor, slipped one of our own SD cards in the device and took a quick video at 1080p with image stabilization enabled. The results? Not so great. While image quality and color reproduction was acceptable, clips were very shaky -- even with stabilization turned on. Perhaps someone with steadier hands (not running on two hours of sleep and caffeine fumes) would have better results -- actually, we sure of it. Check out a qui

JVC's 4K camcorder begins making throat-cutting motions towards the RED Scarlet
We've been lusting after the commercial version of JVC's 4K camcorder for longer than we'd care to admit. It's powered by a Falconbird LSI chip, toting a 10 x optical zoom and a 0.5-inch 8-megapixel CMOS that'll record footage at a resolution of 3840 x 2160. The chip's USP is its ability to process the footage as it's being recorded rather than storing it for post processing later. It'll compress the video down enough, in real time, that you'll be able to store up to two hours of 4K video on sufficiently equipped SDHC card. Yo

PayWizard offers more ways to pay for content on Samsung smart TVs
PayWizard's "multi-screen" TV payment platform has been available for some time in the UK, but the company's now taking advantage of CES to attempt a big push into the US market. That multi-screen bit comes from the ability to manage your account and purchase content on multiple devices (including smartphones and PCs, in addition to smart TVs), and the company is also touting a new voucher system that can be used for gifting and promotions from content providers. While it remains to be seen how widely it will be used, the company has already gotten off to a decent start by announcing an application for Samsung's smart TVs, which will let folks refill their balance and manage their

Share iPad displays with Philips In-Car Screen Kit
I have kids, and I live over three hours away from our nearest family. I know how difficult it is to entertain a car full of kids while driving, which is why the Ubergizmo post about the Philips In-Car screen kit caught my eye.
It's simply a pair of LCDs that strap to the back of a car seat and connect to your iPad, iPhone or iPod touch. A single cable connects the LCD displays to your iOS device and lets you watch videos from the comfort of you car seat. There are no proprietary cables or DVD players to setup, which makes setup a breeze.
The system is available in both 7-inch (PV7002i) and 9-inch (PV9002i) sizes and includes all

Kodak's stock price exploded after restructuring announcement
It's only January 10th and Kodak's already having a terrible year: six days ago the beloved photography company was preparing for Chapter 11, but today its stock price leapt by 45 percent (and counting). The cause? The announcement of a new plan intended to pull the troubled company into the 21st century and, more importantly, into the black. It's planning to simplify its business structure down to two divisions and reduce costs while pushing its successful range of printers. We've got the announcement after the break but hopefully we'll see the century-old company live to see another

Amazon today launched an iPad-optimized Kindle Store website that, while still separate from the Kindle reader app, makes browsing for ebooks a much more touch-friendly process.

On the idea of a 7-inch Apple iPad
There's been much debate over the idea of a 7-inch iPad from Apple. Today, our pals at MacObserver jumped into the mix with their take on things. The Kindle Fire, Ted Landau points out, offers "an e-reader with added iPad-like features for half the price of an iPad."
Speaking as a happy Kindle Fire owner, I rather like the medium form factor. This is not an opinion universally shared in the TUAW trenches, but I appreciate the way I can carry it around in a purse -- something not possible with the iPad. That means, when I head out, I now often take the iPhone and the Fire along, where as before I'd have only had the iPhone with me. My iPad remains reserved for backpack or briefcase excursions.

SteelSeries drops a bag of CES goodies: two headsets, three mice and one mobile controller
It's CES time folks, and that means that companies are unveiling new products by the bundle, and gaming accessory maker SteelSeries is no different. First up is the Ion wireless gaming controller that connects to your PC, tablet or phone through Bluetooth. It'll grant you up to 20 hours of gaming at a stretch when it goes up for sale in Q3 of 2012. The company's also debuting a couple of headsets, the Flux and Siberia v2 Frost. The Flux, scheduled for a Q2 release, is aimed at gamers on-the-go, as its ear cups collapse for easy storage while traveling. It's also got cord jacks on either side that allow you to daisy chain headsets together so more than one person can listen to a single

Gracenote Entourage: the ACR TV platform has a name!
Remember Gracenote's plans for an Automatic Content Recognition system for TV? (think: Shazam to help you work out which The Mentalist episode is on). Now it's got a name: Gracenote Entourage. It'll run on smartphones and tablets to identify movies, TV shows and music just from the audio clip. It'll then show you related programming, actor bios and, erm, relevant advertising (but hey, they've gotta make money somehow, yeah?). It'll run on mobile devices and smart TVs, although would that really be easier than pressing the "TV Guide" button on your remote? We'll leave that for you to judge.

Intel demos Medfield-based smartphone reference design at CES (video)
There we go! Head past all the months-old Ultrabooks in Intel's CES booth, and you'll stumble across something less pedestrian: a reference smartphone, based on the chipmaker's Medfield platform. How it looks is irrelevant, really -- that chintzy, fingerprint-prone slab of plastic offers no hints as to what the Samsungs and HTCs of the smartphone world are going to create. What matters here is what's inside: this 4-inch handset packs a single-core 1.6GHz Intel Atom Z2460 chip, XXM 6260 modem and Intel GMA graphics, along with your requisite WiFi radio, accelerometer, etc. (Intel had Gingerbread installed, though that'll hardly be current by the time Medfield starts shipping.)
Though battery life will naturally vary by manufacturer, this particular device houses a 1,

Daily Mac App: SnapRuler
It wasn't too long ago that I was faced with the task of redesigning a website -- replacing all the images, re-doing an image map and implementing a layout with multiple columns. This task required lots of on-screen measurements, and my method of taking screenshots and measuring them in Photoshop just didn't work. After some searching, I found SnapRuler.
SnapRuler is a simple, lightweight program that helps you measure items on your screen. The app uses a large loupe to help you pinpoint your starting and ending location. It has a snap-to feature that'll jump to the nearest edges or corners, which is handy when you're measuring an object with distinct boundaries. Noise cancellation maestros Wolfson Microelectronics have announced a pair of buds, designed for mobile phones. The Digital Silence DS-421D is fitted with microphones in each earbud and promises to last for 14 hours of audio playback on a single battery charge. The headset totes three different ANC profiles; a wide-frequency general, airplane for low-frequency engine hums and office for neatly sidestepping the daily workplace banter. Fortunately, the Gundam color scheme isn't final, but you can expect to see the finished articles in Spring 2012. Check the full specs in

Elop: Lumia 800 hitting Microsoft retail stores in February
Nokia CEO Stephen Elop just came on stage at the CES keynote and announced that the unlocked Nokia Lumia 800 would be available in Microsoft retail stores sometime in February. Qualcomm shows off Windows 8 running on an LTE-equipped Snapdragon
AT&T was getting all hot and heavy over LTE-equipped Windows 8 tablets at its developers summit and an afternoon session about a Qualcomm powered model had certainly piqued our interest. What wasn't clear was whether such a piece of hardware actually existed, but we're happy to report it does. Dr. Paul Jacobs pulled out a Snapdragon S4 MSM8960 slate during his keynote running Microsoft's next-gen tile-based OS and the requisite 4G connection -- on AT&T's network, of course.
Jacobs treated attendees to a very brief demo of the tab, showcasing the browser and Windows 8 apps. He went on to note that the in development slates run on ARM processors and won't need fans to cool down. Aside from that, not much else was revea

Survey finds iPhone demand still strong in North America
The iPhone 4S launched several months ago, and demand remains strong says a new survey from ChangeWave. The December 2011 survey asked customers if they were buying a new smartphone in the next 90 days and which handset they would choose. Similar to previous surveys, the iPhone was the top choice, chosen by a majority (54%) of the respondents. The runner-ups were Samsung and Motorola which grabbed 13% and 7% of shoppers, respectively.
The iPhone has slipped a bit, and Samsung has gained some ground since the September 2011 survey. This isn't a sign that Apple is losing its appeal; it's just the natural flow of product launches. ChangeWave surveyed customers in September, just befo

Shiny, and just as prone to finger prints as any piano glass finished product, the thickness of the device makes us wonder if it'll clear the MHL compatible HDMI port of the thinnest of HDTVs -- hopefully a small HDMI extender will be bundled in.

Backstage: Hope To See The Next iPad At CES? You Might, Without Knowing It
Yesterday, one day ahead of the 2012 CES, I saw what’s supposedly the next-generation iPad. I’d show you a picture, but there’s honestly nothing to be seen. Think iPhone 4 to iPhone 4S: this device so resembles the iPad 2 that differences are only obvious when they’re placed next to each other. From the back, you could walk past this new iPad on display and have no idea that anything had changed. Here’s the scoop on what…

Intel mounting 'biggest advertising campaign since 2003' for Ultrabooks
Intel's betting the farm on Ultrabook PCs with its biggest-budget advertising campaign since 2003. April will see the start of a massive advertising campaign designed to convey the benefits of thin and light notebooks to the masses. Kevin Sellers, Santa Clara's head of advertising was boasting ahead of Tuesday's Intel press conference where we're expecting plenty of juicy revelations about the company's Medfield smartphone platform. We'd say "keep your eyes peeled" for the adverts, but given how deeply ingrained the Intel bunnies are on our subconscious, we'll just wait for the PR onslaught to begin.Intel mounting 'biggest advertising campaign sinc

Call of Duty Elite mobile apps for iOS out today
Activision has announced that its Call of Duty Elite mobile apps are arriving on iOS today -- they should be available for download from the App Store before long. The apps do require you to be registered to the Elite service (which works in conjunction to track all of your stats from the extremely popular Xbox 360, PS3 and PC games), but once you're all set up with that, you'll be able to log in, and check out the service's various "Connect, Compare and Compete" functions like browsing your own stats, looking at clan information, and even checking out official Activision contests and standings.

MacBook Air: 66 Prozent dünner dank neuer Akkus?

D-Link's supporting 802.11ac for speedy (wireless) gonzales
With the crushing inevitability of a rude email from the IRS, D-Link is announcing it'll be supporting the blossoming 802.11ac WiFi standard. It'll include the technology in all its forthcoming gear, vaguely described as "in the pipeline." For the uninitiated: 802.11ac is a Gigabit wireless standard that will melt the faces of anyone who thinks 802.11 is quick. It only uses the 5GHz band, unlike the elder standard, which works across the 5GHz and 2.4GHz bands and the company has announced that the gear will be backwards-compatible with your older gear, which we hadn't had confirmation

It's hard to know whether the absence of frills like widgets is due to this being an early build, or whether it's because Tizen is intended as a lower-end OS, but either way it's too early to make any hars

News: IK Multimedia at 2012 CES: iOS Audio Accessories
It looks like IK Multimedia has been pretty busy leading up to the 2012 International CES; it had three brand new iOS-compatible audio products to introduce at this year’s show. iRig Mic Cast ($40) and iRig Mix ($100) are both scheduled to be released this month. The former is a monaural condenser mic specifically made to record speech, and is designed to be especially useful for interviews and podcasts, somewhat unusual given the quality of…

Samsung's WiFi-enabled cameras hands-on
While scouring Samsung's booth at CES's Digital Experience for that glorious 55-inch OLED set this evening, we came across a table full of new WiFi-enabled cameras and a camcorder. The logic behind the WiFi feature is that it enables direct access to Microsoft's Sky Drive, E-Mail, PC Auto Backup, remote viewfinding and of course Facebook, Youtube, and Picasa right from your phone. The top of the line $379 WB850F -- the F designation indicates it has WiFi -- has a 16 megapixel BSI CMOS sensor, 21x optical zoom, 3-inch AMOLED display, shoots 1080p HD, and even has GPS with POI. The 16 megapixel $199 DV300F was also on hand with a 5x optical zoom, a 3-inch display and shoots 720p video.

iOS 5.1 beta 3 returns 3G toggle, hints at dictation [U]
[Updated with Siri Dictation info] Apple has posted a third developer beta of iOS 5.1, reports say. The firmware is identified as build 9B5141a, and includes a variety of bugfixes and minor improvements over beta 2. Latronix xPrintserver mobile printing system hands-on (video)
It's been nearly a month since Latronix announced its xPrintserver mobile printing solution and today, we finally got to see it in the flesh, here at CES. All they have to do is hook it up to their network, select an image from their iPhone or iPad, and just click the print option in iOS. Analogix Slim Port technology lets you connect your phone to your TV via its microUSB port
Sometimes, the simplest ideas are the best ones, and Analogix Slim Port technology certainly qualifies as both. It's a cabling solution that allows you to mirror what's on your phone or tablet's screen to your TV via microUSB -- instead of needing an extra HDMI or MHL port. Analogix's secret sauce is on a chip embedded in the jack portion of the cable and because it's based on DisplayPort technology, it can connect using HDMI, VGA, or DVI connections. Olympus sues its own president, executives over accounting scandal
Remember that super crazy Olympus accounting scandal we told you about a couple of weeks back? Yeah, well, it just got super crazier. The camera maker is suing its own president, Shuichi Takayama and 18 other past and present executives over the dealie, in which it worked to conceal $1.7 billion in loses. The company filed in a Japanese court yesterday. On top of that, current board members have agreed to resign, moving aside for investors to vote on new management for the company.

Amped Wireless' new super-range WiFi gear unveiled at CES

Victorinox's 1TB USB / eSATA II drive fingers-on
We're still trying to come to terms with just how fantastic it would be to keep a Victorinox 1TB drive on a keyring. Think about that potential for data storage -- and horrendous heart-wrenching sadness if you lost it -- at the flip of a wrist. While the drive will eventually ship in both red and black -- configured as only USB drives or more traditional Swiss Army knives -- we only got our mitts on the safer, less pointy versions. An interesting addition to these drives is a small LCD display on the side that might at some point show meaning information, but sadly our only boasted the 1TB size. The Swiss Knife masters expect this device to start shipping in the September o

MetroPCS' Samsung Galaxy Attain 4G hands-on
Samsung launched a bevy of sets today, including the Samsung Galaxy Attain 4G which brings more LTE speed and, let's face it, pure cellular magic to the waves of MetroPCS. The device itself is quite small when compared to some of the 4.3-inch behemoths we've seen of late, but by eschewing some of the high end features Samsung manages to keep the price down. The Attain's 3.5-inch display is clear and easy to read, build quality -- we're rather fond of the textured back -- quite good and for only $199 after a $50 rebate, not a bad deal. GoPro Wi-Fi BacPac and Remote Control Kit hands-on (video)
We're certainly not going to say no to more functionality for GoPro's rugged camera units. Here at CES's Digital Experience, we've got to get a glimpse at both the WiFi BacPac and Remote Control Kit. The WiFi Bacpac does what you'd expect it to do -- but with an extra twist. Alongside WiFi connectivity, it'll also play nice with both Android and iOS devices. The apps will display any captured content immediately, with a free-to-download app that will connect with the camera.
The remote control kit, meanwhile, is capable of stringing together several different cams, with a largely dual-button setup that looks an awful lot like a heart-rate monitor. Check the hands-

The newest phone in the Lumia series is packing a 4.3-inch ClearBlack display, 1.4GHz single-core CPU, 512MB of RAM, and sports a 8MP Carl Zeiss f/2.2 camera with LED flash that's capable of cranking out 720p HD video capture, as well as a 1.3MP front-facing camera that uses f/2.4. As we've reported here before, more kids than ever are interested in getting iPod touches and even iPads as gifts, so Nukotoys wants to come up with toys and products that sit in that space, coming up with new types of toys for children to play with and learn from on Apple's devices. Raderman said his company was going after both "virtual play patterns and physical play patterns," trying to combine "the power of physical objects" with all of t

NVIDIA announces DirectTouch technology for Tegra 3 tablets, promises a smoother touch experience
You'd think that with Tegra 3 shipping in the Transformer Prime and all, we'd know everything there is to know about the new SoC. Apparently not. NVIDIA just announced DirectTouch, a technology exclusive to its Tegra 3 platform that uses that bonus fifth core for to improve touch detection. So what does a low-power core have to do with the touch experience, you say? Essentially, what's going on is NVIDIA's PRISM Display technology separates color and backlight intensity to save battery life while preserving fidelity. In a demo, the technology looked mighty smooth, though we'll need to get hands-on ourselves and see the technology in action for more than five seconds before we can weigh in on its utility.

NVIDIA's Tegra chips coming to cars, starting with the Tesla S, as well as Audi and Ferrari
Well, here's something we were not expecting to hear at today's NVIDIA CES press conference. The company just announced that its Tegra chips will power not just tablets, but in-car entertainment systems. For starters, this will include Tesla's model S, though it's also going to find a home in Ferrari and Audi (announcement to come, we're told). That's all we know for now -- nothing on availability or NVIDIA's roadmap -- but given how ubiquitous Tegra is, we think we have a handle on how well it handles multimedia content.NVIDIA's Tegra chips coming to cars, starting with the Tesla S, as well as A

Sony Bloggie Live review
Last April, Cisco unceremoniously shuttered Flip, two years after purchasing the company for $590 million. The end of the line came as a bit of a shock, marking the death of the brand that had become synonymous with pocket cams. But did it also mark the end of the miniature camcorder, in a world where more and more people carry portable cameras on them at all times, in the form of smartphones?
In spite of Cisco's lack of faith in the market for budget standalone camcorders, a number of companies such as

HP Envy 14 Spectre official: 3.79 pounds, NFC, Radiance display and glass chassis, arriving February 8 for $1,400
As far as product launches go, this one wasn't very subtle. Just last week, HP's PR team widely disseminated a brief video teasing a wispy laptop called the Spectre. We couldn't parse too many details for all the shadows and quick-cuts, but we gathered this much: it seemed to be thin, and far too sleek to be just another business-centric Ultrabook. Nope, it would be arresting, bold and highly stylized. And this time, it would be meant for mainstream consumers.
Well, folks: we were right (except for the thin part, anyway). HP just unveiled the Envy 14 Spectre, and is billing it as a "premium Ultrabook." Which makes s

Lenovo's IdeaPad Yoga convertible tablet runs Windows 8, is set to arrive later this year for 'around $1,000'
If CES is the place where companies can demo products they don't intend to sell for another six months, what better place for PC makers to tease their first Windows 8 tablets? Though the OS isn't expected to reach its final stage until later this year, Lenovo is already showing off the IdeaPad Yoga, a convertible tablet with a screen that flips over, like a cover on a spiral-bound book. If you like, you can bend it partway so that the keyboard functions as a stand when you're in the mood to watch a movie.
Based on our conversations with Lenovo reps, it's clear the company sees this as a laptop first, and tablet second. The proof is in the specs, really. It weighs "less than 1.5kg," or 3.3 pounds, making it heavier than some
