AT&T talking up LTE-enabled Windows 8 tablets at Developer Summit
If you're looking for maximum exposure for your developer event, might as well host it during the same week at CES. For bonus points, have it in the same city. That's precisely what AT&T has done for its 2012 Developer Summit, and while the majority of the sessions won't tickle the fancy of everyday consumers, there's one slot in particular that's giving us pause. Titled "A Metro Style Hemi," an afternoon session at the event will showcase a Windows 8 tablet, reportedly powered by one of Qualcomm's many chips. There's no details on whether or not a physical unit will be on hand with an active LTE radio, but it's useful to know that Microsoft's already talking with the carrier about hosting such devices. After all, we're still believing tha

Motorola estimates 10.5 million devices shipped in Q4 2011, over half smartphones
We'll need to wait for the company's earnings later this month for the final numbers, but Motorola has now provided some preliminary results for the fourth quarter of 2011 that indicate smartphones accounted for more than fifty percent of all the mobiles devices it shipped. Specifically, Motorola estimates that it shipped a total of 10.5 million devices in the quarter, 5.3 million of which are smartphones (there's no further breakdown beyond that). That's up from 4.8 million smartphones in the previous quarter, although the total mobile devices slipped slightly from 11.6 million. The company also says it expects "modest profitability" with estimated sales of $3.4 billion for t

Daily Mac App: Fluid
Fluid lets you create an "app" out of a website. If you use one specific website all the time, this alone is very handy. For example, if you wanted a browser specifically for Gmail, you could make one using Fluid and set its own icon, download directory, and other settings. Or maybe you heard about Facebook tracking users even when they are "logged out" of Facebook and want to have a browser that you only use for Facebook.
Once you start making them, the uses for per-site browsers start appearing everywhere. I created one for my web hosting company's "web panel" with links on the bookmark bar to domain registration, support links, mail settings, etc. I don't need to see those links all the time, so I wouldn't want to put them on my regular browser's toolbar. But when I nee

Apple snaps up 23% of flash in fall, profits from markup
An investor note from Bernstein Research's Toni Sacconaghi has estimated that Apple bought 23 percent of all flash memory made in fall 2011. Going by the estimated storage for each product category and the shipment volumes, he believed that Apple had bought over 1.4 billion gigabytes' worth of NAND flash for storage in the iPad, iPhone, iPod touch, and MacBook Air. In pure parts costs, it may have spent $392 million, he said in Fortune's copy of the note.

Sure there will be plenty of good news for gadget fans at CES next week, but here's a bit of a downer for early software adopters in the US -- that free unlimited Spotify account that you signed up for six months ago will be drawing to an end. Yep, it's time to either break out the old credit card number or learn to start rationing your listening. When the trial period ends next week, those who signed up at launch will be limited to 10 hours a month of listening and five plays a track. The service, which is built on top of BitTorrent's much loved technology, doesn't impose any size limits and stores the content in the cloud, so you can share with offline users. Share also lets you set groups for transfers, so the rest of the world doesn't get a crack at your files. And, because you can't launch a service without some manner of social functionality these

iPhone 4S owners use almost twice as much data as iPhone 4 users
A new study by telecom network tech firm Arieso shows that owners of Apple's new iPhone 4S are using almost twice as much data with their devices than iPhone 4 users, and almost three times as much as iPhone 3G users.
The report, covered by Reuters, shows that the primary driver of the data usage is the Siri intelligent assistant. iPhone 4S users are even consuming more data than iPad 2 users, who are probably more tied to Wi-Fi networks for their consumption of a steady diet of web pages, email, and media.
Arieso's CTO, Michael Flanagan, noted that "I use the iPhone 4 myself and when I first heard of the iPhone 4S features I was not compelled to rush out and get one. However, the data usage numbers I

This electric wire is four atoms thick, and you thought speaker cable was fiddly (video)
This should come as a great relief to anyone planning a quantum computer self-build: wires still conduct electricity and obey key laws of classical physics even when they're built at the nanoscale. Researchers at Purdue and Melbourne universities used chains of phosphorus atoms inside a silicon crystal to create a wire that's just four atoms wide and a single atom high -- 20 times smaller than the previous record-holder and infinitely narrower than anything you'd find at Newegg. The video after the break almost explains how they did it.

Reports suggest 4th quarter iPhone sales very good
iPhone sales are almost always good, and when Apple reports 1st quarter sales on January 24th, all the signs point to some really excellent numbers.
Earlier this week, Verizon CFO Fran Shammo reported 4.2 million iPhone sales, which doubled the company's 3rd quarter numbers. Some analysts estimate AT&T sold about 7 million iPhones, while estimates for Sprint are over 2 million phones. That's more than 13 million phones in the US alone, and of course the iPhone is selling in much of Europe and Asia.
There are probably several factors contributing to robust sales. Extremely high customer satisfaction makes current owners evangelists for Apple products. The iPhone 4S with Siri created a lot of positive buzz, a

Daily iPhone App: Nearby Now
I don't use the phone book. In fact, I'm not even sure where my copy of the Yellow Pages is placed. It's been gone for months, and the only time I miss it is when I need to find a local plumber or electrician. It's so difficult to find information on nearby contractors. No search tool or website can duplicate the concise listing of the Yellow Pages. That's why I was excited to hear about Nearby Now, an iOS app for service professionals and their customers that helps to fill this gap.
The app lets service professionals create an account and check-in when they are called to someone's house. They can check-in using the app, via SMS or by linking their Nearby Now account to Four Square. When they mark their location, their approximate

How Apple iBooks needs to compete with Amazon: Cross-platform support
Amazon has trailblazed; Apple has followed. Apple's iBooks program currently allows authors to self-publish ebooks. Authors create their own business built around iTunes Connect, just as they do for self-published apps.
So where does Apple have room to improve? What follows is one of several posts about how iBooks can improve to better compete with Amazon. In this post, I discuss Apple's lack of iBook platforms, and what they can do to improve outreach.
Imagine you've just bought a book. If it's a print book, you can stick it into your backpack, your purse, or even your cargo pocket -- take it anywhere, read it anywhere. When you're done, you can pass it to a friend.
If it's an ebook from Amazon, chances are likely you can read it on nearly any platform you can think of. You can read

Rumors back iPad 3 in March, add sketchy 'iPad 4' in October
Claims of the iPad 3 shipping in March were braced on Friday by a rumor that included uncertain claims of a second 2012 follow-up. Apple's tablet would arrive in two months with its rumored 2048x1536 display, Digitimes' anonymous sources said. They also echoed beliefs that Apple would cut the iPad 2 down to $399 to squeeze out other companies who had discounted their own tablets, though in their case due to poor sales.

Apps for Apes: Apples iPad erreicht den Zoo

The piezoelectric effect is an interesting phenomena. Capable of turning vibrations into electric signals, it's at the heart of the Mogees project from Bruno Zamborlin and Norbert Schnell. Here, a contact microphone is connected to a system that processes sound from unique gestures and then triggers the appropriate instrument in its database -- thereby turning virtually any surface into an experimental jam band. Different gestures may be added to Mogees, which can also recognize the difference between fingers and objects such as coins. The project isn't commercially available, but if you're unfamiliar with the magic of contact microphones, we think the video after the break will be a rather fascinating introduction. Hell,

Swype getting official taste of Ice Cream Sandwich at the month's end
Global swipers didn't respond well when they were told there'd be no ICS support for their beloved Swype. Although we're sure some of you have cut corners and gone the unofficial route, you'll be happy to know that the third-party keyboard firm's tweeted that official Ice Cream Sandwich support is coming soon -- like, "end-of-month" soon. Swype didn't include an exact date within its 140 character-limited box, so all you proud Galaxy Nexus owners will have to make due with what y

US Cellular reassures us of LTE plans: first tablet by March, smartphone by April
Last we heard, LTE was supposed to land on US Cellular last November, but months passed with nary a peep on the carrier's progress. Finally, a little ray of light shone from its official Twitter account as it confirmed today that high-speed mobile broadband is still on the radar, but its deployment was simply pushed back to the end of March, when we'll see the first LTE-capable tablet arrive. For those craving to have the service on something a little smaller, the company a

LG announces upgraded Smart ThinQ appliances, average refrigerator IQ set to rise in 2012
Were last year's ThinQ appliances from LG just not quite sophisticated enough for you? Well, noble reader, screw that monocle a little tighter into your eye and get a load of this year's crop, which LG has dubbed Smart ThinQ. This includes a whole range of appliances like washing machines, ovens and even the company's robotic vacuum cleaners. Most promising to us is the refrigerator, which sports an LCD that indicates what food is in the refrigerator, where it's located and when it expires -- information that you can access from your similarly smart ph

Velocity Micro reveals tech bounty for CES: projectors, tabs and more
Velocity Micro, has just peeled back the curtain on what it'll be parading next week in Vegas. First up is a pair of successors to its budget Cruz T408 tablet. The T507 Android 4.0 slate houses a Cortex-A8 1.2 GHz Processor and 512MB of RAM, which might not get palms sweating, but you will also get HDMI out, a front facing camera and 8GB of internal for your humble $150 MSRP. The T510 is a bigger sibling, but the specs remain largely the same, bar a rear camera and an extra 2.7" of screen to fondle.
Two more new releases come in the form of its top-end Xeon

NRTC members will have access to 12 Mbps service packages starting at $50 per month as soon as January 16th, finally bringing high-spe

Swann's new RC camera-choppers make stalking easy and fun
Swann's releasing three new iDevice controlled helicopters for all the personal espionage / office hijinks you can cope with. The $70 iFly Micro Lightning will annoy colleagues on your floor while the similarly priced Sky Eye includes a camera that will shoot stills and video to its 512MB onboard memory before uploading the results to YouTube or Facebook. Sprint throttling top 1% of cellular data users
Sprint CEO Dan Hesse in his Citi conference remarks revealed that Sprint was throttling some of its cellular users. While the plans are technically limited, the top one percent of users are slowed down. He suggested that Sprint could "knock them off" if they truly misused the data, but it wasn't clear this had ever happened or was an active policy.

The Dark Knight Rises trailer breaks iTunes download record
The second trailer for the upcoming Dark Knight Rises (which I'm really looking forward to, as both a huge Batman fan and a big fan of Christopher Nolan's work) has broken records on Apple's iTunes movie download site, boasting a full 12.5 million downloads in just 24 hours, topping the previous record by 2 million. That's a pretty solid debut for the "exclusive" trailer (exclusive, in this case, meaning it's popped up on other video sites after its debut).
That previous record was held by none other than Marvel's The Avengers preview, which came out earlier this year. Obviously downloads like these don't make any money for Apple -- t

LG Spectrum eyes January 19th release date, dual-core 1.5GHz CPU and 4.5-inch HD display

This replacement for the Revolution will feature a dual-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon S3 SoC, along with a 4.5-inch, 1280 x 720 IPS display and an 8 megapixel camera with LED flash. Rumor: Apple may be mystery retailer coming to Halifax mall
Canada may get as many as four new Apple stores in 2012, but if reports from Nova Scotia are true, however, one store may go against Apple's trend of placing stores in the highest population centers and will instead land in Halifax, the provincial capital but home to only 400,000 people. The rumor, which has circulated in various forms for years, is recently supported by unusual renovations and unusual secrecy from the main mall in town, iPhoneinCanada claims.

Plantronics GameCom 780 7.1 surround sound gaming headset -- hands on
Leaked slideshows don't lie -- Plantronics is stepping up its gaming headset offerings. In addition to the GameCom 780, the Dolby 7.1 virtual surround sound cans we saw yesterday, the outfit is also marching out the GameCom 380 -- a lower end twin that lacks the 780's Dolby chops. Plantronics is bringing both headsets to CES, but gave us a shot at trying on a pair of 780s a few days early -- read on to see how they fit.

Sprint reportedly confirms data throttling for 'top one percent' of abusers
So, wait -- is unlimited just unlimited, or is it "unlimited?" Let's ask the man who spent a solid 30 seconds (and countless millions) explaining precisely that back in March of last year oh, wait. Despite Sprint's claims of keeping its "unlimited" plans "truly unlimited," it seems that there is a special asterisk reserved for those who really attempt to push the boundaries. No real surprise, honestly, but CEO Dan Hesse was quoted earlier today as saying the following in regard to heavy

Moo.com makes business cards from your Facebook Timeline, strangely offers no Like button on its site
It's a new year, which probably means that you're due for new business cards. And look, your card design from last year is precisely that -- so last year. Moo has announced a clever new design, which allows you to "take your Facebook Timeline offline, and hand it out to new friends, contacts and potential clients." Wildly enough, creating 'em is as easy as tweaking your Timeline. Once you're ready to roll, just sign in and allow Moo to access your data (cue privacy advocate yelling), check that you spelled your name right and hand over $15 for a stack of 50 cards. Once you receive 'em

Digital music finally outsells physical media, books look on in alarm
That sharp sucking of air you heard at the end of 2010, well, that was the record industry wincing as sales of CDs continued to tumble while digital media sales remained flat. The relieved exhale that you just heard echoing through the atmosphere? That was the collective sigh of executives who just picked up the latest Nielsen report indicating that digital music sales are on the rise again and, for the first time ever, have finally surpassed physical media. Sales as a whole were up, but while CDs were down 5.7 percent, digital track sales were up 8.4 percent and digital albums a stunning 19.5 percen
