Large advisor calls for RIM to split chairman, CEO roles

Investment advisor group Glass Lewis made a public call for RIM shareholders to split up the company's chairman and CEO roles. The firm echoed earlier calls and said the current system gives only "inadequate independent checks" on co-CEOs Jim Balsillie and Mike Lazaridis at a chaotic moment in the company's history. The founders not only lead the company but have final say on its board and have the most shares, Glass Lewis' analysts said.

Final Cut Pro X complaints fly between editors and developers

So hey guys, Final Cut Pro X, eh? Conan's editors aren't the only ones arguing about this update. Interval patent lawsuits frozen as patents given second look

Interval Research's lawsuits against web giants has faced a setback in the past week as Judge Marsha Pechman froze the cases. All of them are on hold until the USPTO conducts a reexamination of all four of the Paul Allen-backed company's patents. The case will now go ahead only if the agency finds that the patents were still valid after checking for prior art and other criteria.

TiVo's retail plans for quad-tuner Premiere DVR revealed in FCC filing

If your TiVo-loving heart was crushed last week when we found out that its new Premiere Q DVR would only be offered by cable companies with no plans for retail sales, allow us to put the pieces back together. New developer tool will port Xbox 360 games to iOS

ExEn is a brand new tool for developers that's designed to bridge the gap between XNA, Silverlight and iOS (and eventually Android). XNA stands for "Xbox New Architecture," and is the general API used by developers to create games for Microsoft's Xbox console, and ExEn purports to take those games, and bring them over to Microsoft's Silverlight platform, as well as Apple's iOS. It's still a work in progress, so some features are missing (the biggest of these being, of course, that Android compatibility), but it's completely free and open source, so any developers who have XNA code that they want to try and port are welcome to go grab it and give it a shot. Skype coming to the iPad soon

After plenty of success with the iPhone version of the Skype app, the company is finally releasing an official version for the iPad. They haven't announced a date for release yet, but video of the app has leaked out online, and the app is expected to be approved soon. Skype VP of Consumer and Product Design Rick Osterloh had a quick chat with us here at TUAW about the new app and what Skype expects to get out of it. Osterloh says that the iPhone version of Skype burst out of the gate quickly, with a big launch and "a userbase that doubled in just a month's time." If you've lost sleep over the lack of a dedicated Skype app for your iPad, you can rest easy tonight knowing somewhere out there it does exist -- or at least a promo video does. Earlier today, someone over at Skype unintentionally (we assume) posted what looks like an ad for a real-deal app for the iOS slab. Valve makes Team Fortress 2 free-to-play

In case you missed it last night, Valve has turned its excellent team-based shooter Team Fortress 2 into an entirely free-to-play experience, so even if you haven't picked up the game yet, you can head over to Steam right now and download and play it completely free, forever. The game was one of the biggest titles Valve brought over when Steam was made compatible with the Mac, so it's 100% OS X seaworthy -- just install Steam and you're good to get the game. Marketing official claims China Mobile iPhone 5 in September

"A new iPhone with China Mobile's network will debut and the cooperation will be announced in September," says a blog post by the carrier's marketing official, Liu Yang, as quoted by Shanghai Daily and Reuters. Early this AM our beloved leader Victor Agreda summoned me to the bat phone -- or at least the bat virtual office -- to confirm whether or not today's iFans spotting of "iPod 4,2" in 5.0 firmware points to a new device. So I did what any other exhausted mother-of-three would do while making breakfast for the crew and getting them ready for camp. I cracked open an iPod touch 4.3 firmware to see if this reference predates the 5.0 firmware. It does. Here's the 4.3 version of that file with the same iPod4,2 reference. So what does this mean? As if Apple and Samsung's patent infringement catfight weren't distracting enough, Apple is recreating the legal spectacle in Samsung's home country of South Korea. AT&T iPad hacker pleads guilty to stealing data

Daniel Spitler is facing up to 10 years in prison for his role in the theft of personal information from iPad 3G users on AT&T. Spitler was one of the men responsible for writing the iPad 3G Account Slurper that parsed the SIM card numbers of AT&T iPad 3G owners and used them to retrieve email addresses from the carrier's website. Card.io takes on mobile payment through credit card photos

Two ex-Admob executives have launched a new mobile payment system for both iOS and Android devices. The Card.io payment system is designed to work as embedded code within a third-party app. At the time of purchase, a Card.io-enabled app is launched by the user and snaps a photo of their credit card. The built-in Card.io functionality then scans the card for the necessary information required to process a payment through the participating merchantís third-party payment system. Apple took its lawsuits against Samsung to the defender's home country on Friday as it sued Samsung again in South Korea. The new complaint is a direct allegation of patent infringement against several, though currently unnamed, technologies that Apple owns. That didn't seem to stop the US Navy, however, which successfully completed a test flight with a 50 / 50 blend of algae-based biofuel and Jet A (traditionally the flavor of choice for turbine-based aircraft). Telus rewards man who faced down Vancouver rioters

Canadian cell carrier Telus has rewarded a man who bravely defended the company's Robson Street store during the Stanley Cup riots in Vancouver by rewarding him with a free iPhone, six months of service and the donation of $1,000 to the charity of his choice -- a total value of over $2,000. Great Firewall of China getting a small cloud-based silver lining

China, it seems, is getting ready to punch a cloud-shaped hole in its infamous Great Firewall. A massive six square mile office park currently being built in the southwestern city of Chongqing is set to escape the filtering that dominates the rest of the company's internet access. ITC delays decision on Kodak's complaint versus Apple, RIM

The ITC on Thursday postponed its decision on Kodak's loss to Apple and RIM in a patent infringement complaint. Apple releases WWDC 2011 session videos to developers

Apple today has released its session videos from the 2011 Worldwide Developers Conference, which was held earlier this month in San Francisco. The 109 videos are available only to Apple Developer Connection members, who must be logged into their account and can then download the session via iTunes. Music video created with iPad Brushes app

This video for the song named "Undivided" by the band Blush is intriguing. First of all, because it's a pretty solid pop song (with, as far as I can tell, a rare safe-for-work appearance by Snoop Dogg himself). Second, because the simple but beautiful animation was entirely created by animator Shawn Harris on his iPad using the Brushes app. It's very well done. You can tell that many of the parts are strictly done with fingerpainting, but he's also got some interesting photo editing effects, too. There's a "making of" video to watch as well that goes through some of the techniques used by Harris. Surprisingly, it was all done in the app -- he simply recorded each brushstroke as a frame of video, and used Brushes' own tools to output the final product. Good stuff!

Using your credit card to pay for products or services through apps can be a pain, particularly if you need to type in that 16-digit card number and a three-digit security code on a virtual keyboard. A new startup, card.io, wants to make paying for something as easy as taking a picture with your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
