iOS iTunes, App Store apps silently updated to add Purchased button

While everybody was gawking at the news coming in from the WWDC 2011 Stevenote today, Apple silently slipped in an update to the iOS iTunes and App Store apps. The update, which was made on Apple's servers, adds a feature that was described in the keynote -- the Purchased button. As you can see in the screenshot at right, looking at Updates in the App Store app now displays a Purchased button. Tap on it, and you see a list (below) of every app you've purchased. There's a tab displaying all purchased apps, and another showing just those that have been purchased but are not currently installed on the iOS device.

WWDC Keynote: Zahlen, Mac OS X Lion, iOS 5 & iCloud

Heute fängt die WWDC, die Worldwide Developers’ Conference, in den USA an und wird wie üblich mit einer Keynote von Apples CEO Steve Jobs begonnen. Während der PC innerhalb des letzen Jahres um 1% zurückgegangen ist, gewann der Mac 28% Marktanteil. Insgesamt gibt es nun 54 Millionen Mac-Nutzer auf der ganzen Welt, von den verkauften Macs sind fast 75% Notebooks. Mac OS X Lion Mac OS X Lion bringt über 250 neue Features, von denen 10 auf der Keynote vorgestellt wurden. Das erste Feature ist die Unterstützung für Multitouch-Gesten. Nutzt man Gesten, so sind keine Scrollbalken sichtbar - sie erscheinen erst, wenn man aktiv scrollt. Als nächstes kommen Vollbild-Applikationen. Apple readies iTunes 10.3, sets deadline for MobileMe's end

Although the current version is presently listed as v10.2.2, Apple should shortly be distributing iTunes 10.3, a new version of its jukebox software for Mac and Windows systems. The upgrade will mainly add support for iCloud, Apple's new service for sharing apps, music and other content across multiple devices. The company is sometimes slow to enable software updates it has announced elsewhere.

Apple's iMessage arrives to lure BlackBerry Messenger fans

«iOS 5» war an der heutigen Keynote das zweite grosse Thema neben «Mac OS X Lion» und der bombastischen Ankündigung der «iCloud». Wie bei jedem Major-Release des Betriebsystems iOS für Apple’s Mobile Geräte wie iPhone, iPod touch, iPad und Apple TV, gibt es auch in der fünften Ausgabe diverse spannende Neuerungen. Apple on Monday lived up to rumors and launched iTunes Match, its cloud music. iTunes moves to the iCloud, re-download of purchases now possible

Apple announced iCloud today at WWDC and with it the ability to re-download your previously purchased music. Re-downloading of 256 Kbps AAC tracks is now possible for the first time from iTunes, meaning that you can purchase your music once and download it to every device you own (up to 10 devices total), without any additional charge. Like apps and books, music also doesn't count against your 5 GB iCloud storage space. Apple introduced its iTunes in the Cloud solution which lets you archive your iTunes music purchases in the cloud and share it among devices. What happens when you have a song that you ripped and did not but from iTunes? Thanks to the new iTunes Match service, you can scan and match the songs on your computer. If a match in iTunes is found, the cloud service will automatically add it to your library. If iTunes cannot find a match, you can upload the song manually. It's not just documents and apps that will be using iCloud. Apple has just announced Photo Stream, which will sync the camera roll on your iPhone or iPad to the cloud, then keep your other devices updated, including your Macs, using iPhoto or even a PC where your photos and videos will show up in the pictures folder. Of course Apple TV 2 will support Photo Stream as well. Your last 1,000 pictures will be stored in the cloud, but only for 30 days. While Apple demoed ten huge new iOS 5 features at WWDC earlier today, it also mentioned several more in passing that are worth looking at. Apple today previewed iOS 5, the next version of its firmware for the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch. The firmware represents a major overhaul, for instance completely changing the notification system to more closely resemble a mix of Android and webOS. Notifications are no longer temporary, but viewable in a Notification Center by swiping down from the top of the screen. The notifications themselves are no longer pop-up bubbles, but text that briefly swivels down while users are busy in another app.

iOS 5 will introduce a number of exciting changes to Game Center, including profile photos, game discovery (and purchasing), achievement points and more. Here's a brief look at what's new. Apple's 50 million Game Center customers (!) will find achievements supplemented with points. The bragging rights are nice, but why not out-score your friends on the achievement board and the battlefield? iCloud named as successor to MobileMe, will be free service

Steve Jobs unveiled the new iCloud service at WWDC today. iCloud stores a users content in cloud and wirelessly pushes that content to all devices. The services will be free with no ads and be completely integrated with the apps found in MobileMe -- and they've all been rewritten from the ground up. Contacts and Calendars that are created or modified on one device are pushed to the cloud and the changes propagate on all other devices instantly. Calendars also have had sharing features added so you can send them to friends or coworkers. iCLoud also allows users to propagated app and iBooks purchases across devices. Purchase an iBook on your iPad and tap the new iCloud button and the same book will be downloaded on your iPhone, for example.

Mail gets major overhaul in OS X

It's the app we probably use the most, and Mail is getting some big-league features in Lion. Attendees at WWDC only got a brief glimpse of the new Mail app, but it's loaded with new and compelling features. The app has been completely redesigned, with a new multi-column view that looks a bit similar to Mail on the iPad. Taipei insists Apple, Google offer seven-day free trial for apps

In an unusual story coming out of Taiwan, the Taipei City Government is supposedly forcing local divisions of Apple and Google to provide a free seven-day trial for mobile applications. The Taipei Times claims the government is threatening to levy heavy fines, up to US$50,000 or more, if Apple does not comply with this order. According to a senior official, Apple's current policy violates the Consumer Protection Act because it does not provide a way to easily return applications for a refund. The order was reportedly issued on the last day of the Computex 2011 conference and goes into effect in two weeks. Neither Apple nor Google have responded. [Via

iPhones now being sold by 200 carriers worldwide

Whether or not a new iPhone will be introduced this year is largely irrelevant to sales of the device, according to Goldman Sachs analyst Bill Shope, quoted in a Wall Street Journal All Things Digital post today. That's primarily due to the continuing addition of new carriers throughout the world. Apple officials noted that the company is now selling iPhones through 200 carriers, up from 186 at the beginning of April. iOS 5: Eigener Messaging-Service à la BBM von Blackberry?

Filed under: iOS Gut eine Stunde von Steve Jobs' Keynote trudeln die ersten Gerüchte zu iOS 5 ein. Demnach plant Apple einen eigenen Messaging-Dienst. Ähnlich wie RIMs BBM sollen iOS-Geräte automatisch erkannt und die Nachrichten so umgeleitet werden. Don't be surprised if you get handed an iPad on your next British Airways flight. According to Skyclub Magazine the airline is trying out the iDevices with First Class and Business Class passengers as a substitute for the DVD players that's been previously offered. App developers often share promo codes with reviewers, forums, etc. Unfortunately, Apple doesn't provide a way to track which codes have been used, resulting in wasted promotions. OnStar FMV mirror kit to arrive in stores on August 1?

The universal add-on for vehicles that will bring OnStar service will arrive at dealers on August 1, CE Outlook reported. In Frankreich ist es von nun an verboten, als Radio- und TV-Nachrichtenmoderator die Wörter "Facebook" und "Twitter" in den Mund zu nehmen, es sei denn es geht dezidiert um die beiden Firmen als Nachrichteninhalt. Französische Nachrichtenorganisationen dürfen neben dem auch nicht mehr die Zuschauer darauf hinweisen, die jeweilige Facebook-, oder Twitter-Seite zu folgen oder zu checken. Grund dieser Verbannung ist ein Erlass der französischen Regierung vom 27. März 1992, das die Promotion von kommerziellen Unternehmen in News-Formaten verbietet. What we have here is the Spring, a TW$240,000 (US$8,380) eye-tracking rig that was launched in March 2010 and is aimed at users with limited mobility. France bans Twitter, Facebook mentions on TV, in the name of market competition

The words "Facebook" and "Twitter" are now verboten on French TV, because France thought it'd be a good idea to follow its own laws. Last week, the country's Conseil Supérieur de l'Audiovisuel (CSA) ruled that TV networks and radio stations will no longer be able to explicitly mention Facebook or Twitter during on-air broadcasts, except when discussing a story in which either company is directly involved. The move comes in response to a 1992 governmental decree that prohibits media organizations from promoting brands during newscasts, for fear of diluting competition. McDonald's in Europe has been trying a pair of promos leaning on phone technology to lure customers to its stores. One in Stockholm, Pick 'n Play, lets those with at least iPhones control a game of Pong on a giant LCD billboard. The system goes app-free and just uses an optimized web page with HTML5-based location finding to only allow play from those physically close to the ad.

Google Translate API gets reprieve, servers will accept cash for interpreter duties

Last month, Google said it intended to pull the plug on a variety of APIs, including one rather curious pick -- Google Translate, which had actually been getting so much use that it was allegedly causing an "economic burden" for the company. Well, it seems Google got in touch with its capitalistic roots, because the Translate API won't be depreciated after all. Photo shows 'right idea' for iOS 5 ahead of WWDC

A mysterious photo has surfaced that's purportedly at least showing the direction of iOS 5. The image of an iPhone running the software is supposed to at a minimum reflect the "right idea" for the new platform and has a double-height status bar that would factor in notifications, not just ongoing calls or hotspot features. A new camera icon is also in view in TechCrunch's image, possibly there to reflect what the camera looks like on more recent iPhones versus the icon tailored to the original.

Acer Iconia Tab ad at Computex slams iPad for what it lacks

Acer took advantage of the attention from the Computex show in Taipei this week to attack Apple directly in a stairway ad for the Iconia Tab A500. Those visiting part of the metro saw a two-part ad on either side of a staircase. WWDC leak: 'think of iCloud as the new iTunes'

Apple's plans for its iCloud launch could make it more of a fundamental platform shift for Apple than just an upgrade to its existing service, a new clue has given out at the last minute before WWDC. One source for the historically reliable John Gruber said not to see iCloud as an extension of MobileMe but instead to "think of iCloud as the new iTunes." Instead of routing most syncing through a desktop app, much of it would happen through the Internet and let iOS devices work independently of a computer.

Regulators worried about Apple's interest in Nortel patents

On June 20th, Canadian telecommunications equipment manufacturer Nortel will be auctioning off over 6,000 patents in order to restructure its debt and pay off financial obligations.
