Netcom shows off microSD card with integrated NFC goodness (video)
Here's an interesting idea from a Chinese company called Netcom: adding NFC capability to existing phones via microSD. That's right, rather than relying on external add-ons that occupy ports, Netcom decided to fit NFC chips plus their antennas onto ordinary microSD cards, yet still managing to cram in up to 8GB of NAND memory at the same time. Apple finally going after ipods.com domain
In October 2001 Apple introduced the now iconic iPod, and since almost the same time Apple has owned the ipod.com domain name. But in April of 2002, someone registered the plural of the ipod as a domain -- ipods.com. For some reason or another Apple chose then not to go after the owners of the domain even though Apple typically shows no mercy when it comes to its trademarks appearing in domain names.

Educational app maker Watermelon Express has shifted gears and entered the electronic textbook market. An Apple ban on pay-per-install schemes is negatively affecting game developers, complains one company, Tapjoy. Such arrangements involve an outfit offering download incentives to users or other companies, which can inflate a title's ranking in the App Store, and in turn spur more downloads. Avast! Free Antivirus for Mac beta now available
Apple released Security Update 2011-003 yesterday with protection from the MacDefender malware and its variants, but some of our readers might want to do more to protect their Macs from malware. Notion Ink Adam update overhauls UI, provides a smidgen of extra stability (video)
We'd be lying if we said the Notion Ink Adam tablet wasn't a major disappointment, but the tiny Indian company that brought us the slate hasn't packed it in yet -- this week, Rohan Shravan announced a new round of sales, and issued a massive software overhaul for all existing Adams to go along with it. We've been playing with the new software for over a day now, and we can attest that the Eden 1.5 UI is much improved -- it's less flashy, but far more responsive, less prone to crashes, and generally more useful.

HP open to idea of licensing webOS, use on TVs
HP chief Leo Apotheker in his guest appearance at the D9 expo hinted that his company might license webOS in the future. Even though all initial webOS devices in the post-takeover era were HP-made, the CEO said it was "not correct to believe" that the platform would be limited just to HP hardware. He wouldn't say to which companies or when, but when asked about HTC said he "would entertain" the idea if it came up.

Apple has filed for an "iCloud" trademark with the European Trademark Office. If granted, the application should cover the name under 12 International Classes, and many different uses. Some notable ones include: "delivering digital music by telecommunications," "online social networking services," "multimedia content for a fee or pre-paid subscription," "electronic books and magazines," "photographic services," "games" and "headgear."

Twitter partners with Firefox, adds new image sharing tools

What would happen if you took a 13.3-inch MacBook Pro and shrunk it down a notch into a 12.1 or 11.6-inch ultraportable but decided to keep the box shape instead of using a MacBook Air-like wedge design? comScore: BlackBerry dominates Canada, Android at just 12%
comScore on Wednesday revealed some of the first real details of the Canadian smartphone market for the first time. Twitter announces integrated photo-sharing service, improved search
Well, it's not exactly a good day for anyone that placed their bets on a Twitter-linked photo service. As expected, Twitter today announced its own integrated photo-sharing service, which will launch "over the next several weeks" and let folks upload an image and attach it directly to their tweet from Twitter.com -- the same functionality is also said to be coming to its official mobile apps "soon." In more immediate news, Twitter has also announced that a "completely new version" of Twitter search is rolling out today. It promises to deliver both more relevant results for searches and trending topics, as well as related photos and videos that will be displayed next to your results and can be explored in-depth. Samsung Chromebook goes on sale early at Gilt
We can't say we expected Gilt to be the first place to offer Samsung's new Chromebook but, well, here we are. Analyst: iPad challengers scaling back after poor sales
Tablet manufacturers are lowering their production after failing to take on the iPad 2 so far, JPMorgan analyst Mark Moskowitz said in a new investors' note. Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, Motoorla, RIM, Samsung, and Toshiba had all reportedly lowered their yearly production plans as of the start of June, often by 500,000 units but in Acer's case by as much as 1.5 million. In just three months, companies had been given an "early dose of reality" that they weren't about to topple Apple in the near future, Moskowitz said.

Mac Defender attackers bypass new Snow Leopard safeguards
Malware coders have already managed to bypass the initial antivirus signatures implemented with Security Update 2011-003, a report notes. A new version of Mac Defender, linked to a file called Mdinstall.pkg, appears to have been deliberately crafted to go undetected by up-to-date copies of Snow Leopard. The file is even timestamped to Tuesday at 9:24PM Pacific time, meaning that less than eight hours elapsed before attackers managed to once again circumvent Mac OS' protections.

Anfang der Woche waren zwei extrem unscharfe Fotos eines Samsung Galaxy S II I9101 aufgetaucht, die eine neue Variante von Samsungs Smartphone zeigten. Das ist allerdings nicht die allgemein vermutete NFC-fähige Variante, sondern wahrscheinlich eine Art Entry-Level-Version des Galaxy S II. Auf Samsung Singapurs Facebook-Seite sind die Specs dazu aufgetaucht: demnach kommt das Galaxy S II I9101 mit dem gleichen Prozessor wie das Galaxy S (1GHz Dual Core Cortex-A9) und PowerVR SGX 540 Grafik. Nun ist dies nicht die erste Maus mit Lautsprecher, aber so günstig war der gar nicht mal so abwegige Hybrid noch nie, ab lausigen 6,49 Euro ist man dabei. Mac OS X Lion could include iCloud services for free
At next week's WWDC keynote, Mac OS X Lion could be announced as including at least some iCloud services for free, according to sources for AppleInsider. Relative unknown X2Y Attenuators on Tuesday sued Apple, HP, and Intel for allegedly copying its power technology. The Pennsylvania-based lawsuit claims that the three violate five patents for energy conditioning in processors, including the interposers that bring power from a chip's grid array to the chip circuits themselves. Apple preps Moscone for WWDC, takes wraps off datacenter
Crews have already begun putting up WWDC decorations at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, photos show. A team began applying company logos to the building's exterior yesterday, in keeping with normal Apple plans. Moscone staff are also likely raising banners and setting up other material inside, but these were not immediately visible. Prototypes makes iPhone mockups a breeze
This is a cool one, at least for iPhone app designers. Prototypes is a Mac app that lets you take those handcrafted mockups of iPhone screens and turn them into a clickable demo you can share with any iPhone or iPod touch user.
Prototypes takes just about any image format, including straight Photoshop PSD files. Once you drag them into your project, adding hotspots is as easy as clicking and dragging. Create a hotspot and then drag the link to whatever page should be loaded when it's tapped. You can assign a "back" action as well. All links can have a transition (in any direction) assigned to them. You can even add notes that display when a page is loaded and then disappear.

Hulu gains movie credibility with Miramax streaming deal
Hulu gave a major boost to its movie library by adding Miramax titles to its lineup. The multi-year deal lets at least Hulu Plus viewers immediately see movies like Clerks, Pulp Fiction, and Trainspotting in HD when a device supports it. TUAW's Daily iPhone App: Shadow Cities
Shadow Cities is an interesting title from Finnish developer Gray Area. It's a location-based MMO, in that you level up a character while fighting with other players and claiming territory, all of which is based on the real world around you and your iPhone. The game allows you to cast spells with special gestures, which are resource driven and set up to play long campaigns in small bursts of time -- it's designed perfectly for the iPhone and its various interfaces. I found the game a little confusing when I saw it at GDC, but that was an earlier version. Even if the game is a little complicated, it's rewarding when you figure out exactly what's going on.

Acer W4 Windows Phone Mango handset eyes-on (video)
It'll be a little while before Windows Phone 7 Mango phones pop up in the shops, but here at Computex, Acer decided to give us a little tease with a mockup of its upcoming W4 handset. Before you get all excited, though, the hardware specs are pretty yawn-inducing: there's a 3.6-inch 800 x 480 display of unknown type, 1GHz Qualcomm MSM8255 CPU, up to 8GB of storage, 5 megapixel auto-focus camera, and DLNA support. Hardly anything new here, which is a surprise given that we're looking at a Mango device -- a phone to be shipped with a major WP7 refresh.

Bahn bringt Touch&Travel-App für Android
Demnächst will die Deutsche Bahn eine Android-App für ihr drahtloses Ticketsystem Touch&Travel veröffentlichen. Auch Vodafone-Kunden können in Zukunft an dem bis Ende Oktober verlängerten Pilotprojekt teilnehmen.

Mindjet 9 for Mac due June 23, iPad/iPhone versions mid-June
If you're a mind mapping maven, you'll be happy to know that one of the premiere apps in the market (more than 1.8 million paying customers), Mindjet, is moving forward to a new Mac version of MindManager.
Version 9 of MindManager is scheduled to ship on June 23, and will cost US$129 for upgrades or $249 for new licenses. It will add several new features, including a presentation mode, "quick entry" option, WYSIWIG printing, offline import/export for Office and iWork, dynamic content (schedules and Internet links), plus a project management mode adequate to light PM tasks.

Emoticon-Display Bike Light für Fahrradkommunikation im Laufband-Style

Der Designer Fraser Mort hat ein Display fürs Fahrrad ausgetüftelt, das aus einer Matrix mit 8 x 8 roten LEDs besteht und als Rücklicht fungiert und gleichzeitig Emoticons oder Buchstaben anzeigen kann. Strom bekommt das schlicht "Bike Light" genannte Teil vom Dynamo, programmiert wird es am Rechner, der via USB angeschlossen wird. Womit dann auch das Manko benannt wäre: Das Emoticon-Display spult programmierte Zeichenfolgen ab und lässt sich nicht situationsabhängig beim Fahren bespielen. Aber das kann ja noch kommen. Hackerangriff bei Neckermann

Eric Schmidt: "Viererbande regiert die Technikwelt"
Laut Googles Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt regiert eine "Viererbande" bestehend aus Google, Apple, Amazon und Facebook die High-Tech-Welt. In einem Interview auf der Konferenz D9 erklärte er, dass diese vier Unternehmen Plattform-Strategien einsetzten, durch die sie einen enormen Mehrwert für Kunden und Aktionäre erwirtschafteten. Norton launches its Online Family To Go app for iOS devices
Norton announced today that it's launching a mobile companion to its Online Family parental control software. The Online Family To Go app lets parents view their kid's online activities including their web browsing history, search history and chat logs. Parents can also manage their "House Rules" directly from this iOS device and change each child's settings for web browsing, time limits, chat logging and personal information sharing. The app will be available for free from the App Store and requires a subscription to the Norton Online Family service.

A trio of sources speaking to Bloomberg have seemingly shed light on Acer's concerns with Microsoft's new tablet strategy. Seems that the boys beneath Ballmer hope to speed delivery of the company's new tablet OS by limiting variations. This how-to over at Gearz.de will help you share your iCal calendar around even if you don't have a subscription to Apple's online MobileMe service (a very forgivable offense, especially since its expected replacement iCloud service is now just a week away). Unfortunately the writeup is a little technical, as you'll need to actually configure your local web server to share out and broadcast the calendar to anyone who needs to read it. That means you'll need to do a little console typing and config file editing, but as long as you follow directions, it should work just fine.

Vor kurzem hat Steve Ballmer zum ersten Mal offiziell von "Windows 8" gesprochen und verraten, dass die "nächste Generation der Windows-Systeme" im nächsten Jahr rauskommen soll. Lenovo kauft Aldi-Lieferant Medion
Lenovo hat eine Übernahmevereinbarung mit Medion getroffen. Es bietet für alle am Markt befindlichen Papiere nach eigenen Angaben 13 Euro je Aktie in bar, was einem Plus von 29 Prozent auf den durchschnittlichen Schlusskurs der vergangenen 30 Tage entspricht. Nokia senkt Umsatz- und Gewinnprognose
Nokia hat seine Prognose für das laufende zweite Fiskalquartal nach unten korrigiert. So here's the story: Pocketnow was able to snatch some screengrabs from a page that temporarily appeared on the Motorola Mobility website. The image above (and two more after the break) is what they saw. In addition to the Tracy XL homage to the Dick Tracy watchphone, we can also see the back of the Slimline handset and the front of the Zaha. I'm a big fan of the Canadian TV series How It's Made, shown in the USA on the Science Channel. There's something hypnotic and soothing about all those lathes, molds, conveyors and such, producing the things that we all take for granted.

Report indicates iOS users stick with platform due to 'lock-in effect'
Citing a report from research2guidance, GigaOM notes that Apple's market share of app downloads reversed the backward slide that began in 2009 and recently increased by two percent. Acrylic Software has released Pulp for Mac 2.0 -- though calling it an update, it is being treated as a new app on the Mac, ported from the iPad app Times (which itself was a version of the original Mac RSS newsreader Times), and which now changes its name to Pulp for iPad. Roku's line of boxes have come a long way from being used only to stream Netflix, and now the company has announced a plan to take its talents to casual gaming. Two Austria-based gaming studios, CoreCode and nCreate, have teamed up to develop CoreBreach, a futuristic racing game for OS X that has just entered the beta-test phase, with the studios actively soliciting for testers. Android 'fee' malware hidden in legitimate apps
Several months after Google pulled a long list of titles from the Android Market to help protect users against Malware, the platform has reportedly been targeted by a fresh scam. DC Comics announces same-day release for digital, print
Starting on the last day of August, all subsequent issues of DC Comics' 52 Universe titles will be renumbered, starting from number one, as a "reboot" of the entire DC universe, as well as launching a new simultaneous digital release of ongoing titles. DC comic titles will henceforth be available for download on the same day as print publication, kicking off with a re-designed Justice League #1. TechCrunch reports that Twitter is on the verge of launching its own photo-sharing service in direct competition with existing services like TwitPic and yFrog. Gingerbread update begins rolling out to Motorola Droid Pro
We'd had some indication that both the Motorola Droid 2 and Droid Pro would be getting upgraded to Gingerbread in the near future, but we can't say we expected the Droid Pro to be the first of the pair to make the jump. EMI to debut Beatles' Anthology collections June 14th
Apple and EMI Music have announced that the remastered versions of all three volumes of the Beatles' Anthology series will be available on iTunes beginning June 14th, with pre-orders being accepted now. There will also be an Anthology digital "Box Set" which will feature all 155 tracks, along with a Highlights compilation from the Anthology albums available as well. Twitter's imminent self-run photo service may be a necessary preamble to deep integration with iOS 5, more than one source reportedly mentioned Tuesday night. Apple is said to be baking in an option to share photos on Twitter directly from the mobile platform, much in the same way content can be shared to MobileMe, YouTube, and other platforms today. DIY breakout dock looks to get professional sound out of iPad 2
The iPad is an excellent device for creating and editing sound, but sometimes, just using that headphone port isn't enough. For that, DIY musician Qubais "Reed" Ghazala built this custom-made iPad dock, which plugs the iPad into a whole row of various sound-related ins and outs, from a line input and output to even a video interface. Lodsys on Tuesday disputed Apple's warning letter on developer patent licenses and sued some app developers. The company claimed that Apple had forced its hand and that it needed to "preserve its legal options." Joshua Kaufman has images supplied by the Hidden app that show this man using a MacBook that was allegedly stolen from Kaufman's apartment. Through the use of Hidden, Kaufman was able to get some great pictures and the location of the computer, and posted those photos on his Tumblr. We picked this up after John Welch tweeted the link.

Draw Jump für iPhone und iPod touch im Test
Draw Jump wurde vor Kurzem von Electronic Arts im App Store veröffentlicht. Es ist erhältlich für iPhone, iPod touch und iPad, allerdings in zwei unterschiedlichen Versionen. Für unseren Test lag uns die “kleine” Variante für die Apple-Handhelds vor. EA muss sich allerdings mehr als nur einige Vergleiche gefallen lassen in unserem Review.
