Acer: Microsoft imposing harsh rules on Windows tablets
Microsoft is forcing hard limits on how Windows 7 tablets are being designed, Acer chairman JT Wang commented at Computex on Tuesday. He wouldn't elaborate beyond saying there were limits on processor designers that were in turn affecting the PC builders, Bloomberg heard. The limits were "very troublesome," Wang said., though without comment on whether that affected the Iconia Tab W500.

NY Times offers discounted iPad access to select customers
When the New York Times fired up its paywall in March of this year, the pricing plans for digital-only access seemed a bit steep. As Mel pointed out, the differential for NYC paper subscribers ($6.20/week for weekday papers only) versus all-you-can-read digital access (web, iPhone and iPad at $35/4 weeks) was only a couple of bucks. By comparison, today's launch of the San Francisco Chronicle iPad app pegs monthly iPad access at only $5.99.
Fortunately for longtime NYTimes.com readers, there was an exception.

Sicherheitsupdate 2011-003 erschienen
Vor wenigen Minuten ist das Sicherheitsupdate 2011-003 in der Softwareaktualisierung erschienen und lässt sich sofort herunterladen und installieren. Laut dem dazugehörigen Supportdokument soll es die in letzter Zeit sehr übertrieben dargestellte Malware „MacDefender“ in Quarantäne stellen und entfernen. Weiterhin werden mit diesem Update nun jeden Tag die Datei-Qaurantäne-Definitionen aktualisiert.
MacDefender teilt "Nutzern" mit, ihr Mac sei mit einem Virus infiziert und sie müssten MacDefender kaufen, um diesen entfernen zu können. Sowohl diese "Standard-Version", als auch einige unter Umständen schädlichere Varianten des Programms sind im Moment im Umlauf. Ob dieses Sicherheitsupdate vor allen Varianten schützt, ist noch unbekannt, aber zumindest gegen die Original-Version sollte man nun immun sein.Um das a

Nokia's online stores go offline in France and Spain
Nokia's "around breakeven" outlook announced earlier today is discouraging at best, and now it looks like the company has begun shuttering online stores in response to growing competition from resellers, which offer lower prices on the same hardware. So far, online stores in France and Spain have been replaced with a closure notice, so customers in those countries will need to turn to third-party vendors to get their smartphone fix. Security Update 2011-003 lifts barriers against Mac Defender
Apple has released Security Update 2011-003, a patch for Mac OS X Snow Leopard. The fix's main goal is protection against Mac Defender, a piece of malware that attempts to scam credit card numbers from people duped into installing it. A definition for Mac Defender has been added to File Quarantine, and when the code is detected Snow Leopard will try to remove it. The new safeguards cover both Mac Defender itself and unspecified variants.

ECS prototype claims to turn your iPhone into a tablet
This device by computer maker ECS was seen on the floor of the Computex 2011 show earlier this week in Taiwan. It's essentially a tablet that borrows all of its computing power from Apple's iPhone 4, sending out HDMI video to a built-in 9.7" display, and including a larger touchscreen, an SD card slot, and two USB ports in the deal. There are all sorts of reasons why a product like this wouldn't work that well (battery life, for one, and the idea that a blown-up Retina Display probably won't look nearly as good), but ECS went ahead and ignored those and made this prototype anyway.

Apple still angling for movies, TV shows on iCloud
Apple is still trying to negotiate for movies and TV shows on iCloud, just a week away from the Internet service's formal announcement, two sources close to the talks are quoted as saying. Even though discussions with Hollywood studios have been in progress for more than a year, Apple has allegedly intensified its efforts in recent weeks. BlackBerry finally sees competition within US government

Sprint formally calls on FCC to deny AT&T, T-Mobile deal
Sprint on Tuesday formally filed an attempt with the FCC to block the AT&T buyout of T-Mobile. The Petition to Deny argued that no amount of cell site divestitures or requirements could eliminate the competitive problems. Mac Security Update 2011-003 now available for download
Mac Security Update 2011-003 has shown up in Software Update and is available for immediate download and installation.
According to KB article HT4657, the update provides a File Quarantine definition for the OSX.MacDefender.A malware and Mac OS X 10.6.7 will now automatically update the definitions on a daily basis.
The update will also search for and remove MacDefender and its known variants. If you prefer to defuse your malware manually, be sure to refer to our guide. The update will be available later directly from Apple Downloads, and we'll update this post with a direct link at that time.

Apple's iCloud music deals still on track for this week
A follow-up leak Tuesday afternoon backed beliefs that Apple was near wrapping up iCloud music deals. EMI, Sony, and Warner were onboard, but Universal's deal was still on target to wrap up this week, just before iCloud is due to be unveiled at WWDC. The San Francisco Chronicle comes to the iPad
The San Francisco Chronicle's app is out today for the iPad. It joins the roster of major newspapers like the New York Times, Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal and USA Today that have all added iPad editions in the last several months. Of that group, only the USA Today app does not charge non-subscribers (of the print editions) for access.

Patent filing reveals Microsoft's Zune Nano, reminds us of an ambitious past
See that there? That's a hope and a dream, both of which are seemingly situated in a nondescript box six feet beneath the surface of reality. Thanks to a bit of digging by the folks at Techie Buzz, a Microsoft patent filing was unearthed containing pictures and descriptions of a bantam media player, not unlike the sketches here. These days almost all forms are distributed online as PDFs. However, when you need to sign one, you normally need to print it and scan it back in for an email, or even worse, use a fax. Luckily, there are apps for that.

Marine Corps aviators depend on iPad
Aviators for the United States Marine Corps (USMC) in Afghanistan have ejected heavy stacks of paper charts and grid reference graphics from their cockpits and replaced them with the iPad according to a report by Tony Osborne for The Shephard Group. Rolling Stone publisher calls iPad magazine rush 'insanity'
Rolling Stone co-creator Jann Wenner in a discussion late Monday dismissed the idea of tablet magazines in the near term. The Wenner Media founder didn't rule out a digital transition but called the influx of tablet magazines, mostly on the iPad, "sheer insanity" driven by a reflexive action. Apple hat vorhin in einer Pressemitteilung, entgegen vorheriger Praktiken, bekannt gegeben, dass auf der WWDC-Keynote am 6. Juni 2011 Mac OS X Lion, iOS 5 und iCloud vorgestellt werden. Steve Jobs wird dann zusammen mit anderen Mitarbeitern der verschiedenen Teams die Neuerungen vorstellen. Mac OS X Lion wird vermutlich erst einige Wochen später erscheinen, iOS 5 dagegen wird vermutlich deutlich mehr Zeit, vielleicht sogar mehrere Monate, in Anspruch nehmen.iCloud, Apples kommendes Angebot von Cloud-Diensten, könnte mit Mac OS X 10.6.8 und damit noch am selben Tag kommen, natürlich werden iOS 5 und Mac OS X Lion dies auch unterstützen. Apple beginnt mit weltweitem MacBook Unterseiten-Austausch-Programm
Viele Nutzer hatten mit ihren weißen Unibody MacBooks der letzten Generationen Probleme - Die Gummifüßchen fielen leicht ab, da der Kleber anscheinend nicht allzu hochwertig war. Käufer eines MacBook, das zwischen Oktober 2009 und April 2011 gekauft wurde, können diesen Dienst nun in Anspruch nehmen und sich somit kostenlos die Unterseite ihres Gerätes ersetzen lassen. Garmin announces redesigned line of eTrex GPS handhelds with enhanced geocaching
Lost hikers and outdoorsmen will soon have yet another arrow to add to their navigational quivers, now that Garmin has decided to upgrade its eTrex line of GPS handhelds. The refresh, announced this morning, will bring three new models to the eTrex family during the third quarter of this year. ECS demos PadFone-like tablet with iPhone dock
Better known for its mainboards, ECS used its presence at Computex to show an unusual tablet that would serve as an extension of a smartphone. Much like the ASUS PadFone, the 9.7-inch tablet would have a dock on its back to cradle a smartphone. Where ASUS' model is specific to its Android companion, the version on show was designed to cradle an iPhone 4 and should also eventually have modular support for Android, Windows Phone, and other iOS devices.

IEEE 802.11ac: Gigabit-WLAN kommt 2012 für 5-GHz-Band

US Marine Corps tests iPads for in-flight use
Pilots in the US Marine Corps have been testing iPads as an in-flight navigational aid, according to military news site Shephard. The Corps has reportedly been experimenting since November, beginning with the iPad 1, but later incorporating the iPad 2. Test vehicles have included not only larger planes like the KC-130J Harvest Hawk, but small attack aircraft like the F/A-18 Hornet and the AH-1W Cobra gunship.

New Burnaby, Charlotte Apple Stores in development
Apple has set its sights on another two retail stores, this time in Charlotte, North Carolina, and Burnaby in the Canadian province of British Columbia. The Charlotte store will be the city's second, and open on the second floor of the Northlake Mall. Job listings are now being posted and building permits have been issued, effectively confirming plans. Charlotte is, notably, just 30 miles away from Apple's North Carolina datacenter, which was built to support iCloud.

Report suggests Android's lead over iOS has stopped growing
Android, iOS and RIM's BlackBerry OS are at a standstill in the smartphone market. Results from Nielsen's May survey show that Android is holding steady at 37% market share, iOS at 27% and BlackBerry at 22%. Even among the smaller players like Windows Phone and webOS, this stalemate situation holds true.
One thing that is going up is data usage, especially among Android users. On average, Android users download 582 MB of data per month. iOS users come in second with a 492 MB of usage and webOS is third with 448 MB per month. Normalerweise erfreuen wir uns ja an den smarten und teils wirklich guten Designkonzepten, die uns im Äther über den Weg laufen. Diese Idee namens Plug Cup hat aber maximal den IQ eines verkrüppelten Toastbrots. Die Idee: Unten am Kaffeebecher ist ein Stromstecker angebracht, der mit Flüssigkeit gefüllt direkt in die nächste Steckdose soll, um Brühe, Wasser oder Tee zum Kochen zu bringen. Generally, shouting commands at the internet isn't going to get you very far but, if you're just yelling a few destinations and search terms, Chrome extension Chaufr can take you where you need to go. Pixel Qi used the opportunity of Computex to unveil a pair of new sizes of its outdoor-friendly screens optimized for tablets with the hint of a third. MTM Snap project lets you build your own CNC machine so you can build more stuff
It may not be quite capable enough to let you build your own Weighted Companion Cube, but those looking to try their hand at a DIY CNC milling machine won't likely find many more straightforward options than the MTM Snap. Nokia warns of phone slump in spring even with WP7 switch
Nokia on Tuesday warned that its spring would be poorer than expected even in light of Windows Phone 7 plans. The company now expected its revenue from device sales to be "substantially below" its original goals, dropping from the equivalent of $9.5 billion down to $8.8 billion. Schlaumeier von der australischen Swinburne University of Technology haben einen Roboter entwickelt, der Zauberwürfel verdammt schnell löst, jedenfalls nach Robotermaßstäben. Der australische Bot benötigte jetzt inklusive Analyse nur 10,69 Sekunden, um die Farben eines Rubik´s Cube zu sortieren, was dann wohl den inoffizielle Robotergeschwindigkeitsweltrekord (tolles Wort, by the way ) darstellt. Heatmap shows Fifth Avenue Apple Store is hot place for photos
The image above is a heatmap of photo locations on popular pic sharing site Flickr, put together by developer Eric Fischer. Each dot on the map indicates where a photo was taken in New York's Manhattan borough, with each circled area representing a hot spot of location photography. As ifoAppleStore points out, the locations marked 2, 3, and 4 on the map are pretty obvious photo spots, as they represent tourist standbys Rockefeller Center, Columbus Circle and Times Square, respectively. But the number one circle is interesting -- it's the location of Apple's Fifth Avenue Store in New York City, which is apparently competing for tourist eyeballs and photo snaps.

Dabei ist, wie gehabt, die Sprachausgabe eine etwas hölzerne Angelegenheit, aber solche kleinen Makel darf der erste echte Babelfisch wohl ruhig haben. Treebot kriecht Bäume hoch, schleppt dabei zwei Kilo (Video)

Dieser etwas zusammengewürfelt aussehende Kletterbot heisst Treebot und wurde an der Chinese University of Hong Kong entwickelt. Er kann auch mit einem Gewicht von knapp zwei Kilo im Schlepptau den nächsten Baum oder Bambus erklimmen, gemächlich zwar, aber doch stetig. Dazu nutzt er zwei Greifwerkzeuge vorne und hinten und zieht sich und seine Last wie eine Raupe mit unendlicher Grazie nach oben oder direkt von Ast zu Ast. Video nach dem Break.

At a time when Qualcomm and Android are dominating the mobile computing world, Intel's only just starting to catch up with some green robot-friendly prototypes, like these Oak Trail-based 10-inch tablets at Computex 2011. Starting from the left we have the Intel Green Ridge, Foxconn F150, Quanta QXZI, an unnamed Compal device, Intel Marco Polo 2, and Intel Carrot. SanDisk stellt neue Tablet-SSDs mit SATA3 vor
Auf der Computex hat SanDisk zwei neue sparsame SSD-Serien mit SATA3-Schnittstelle für Netbooks und Tablets vorgestellt. Die U100 SSDs (Solid State Drives) lösen dabei die bisherige P4-Serie ab und bieten zwischen 8 GB und 256 GB Kapazität. ARM will Anteil am Markt für Mobilprozessoren bis 2015 auf 50 Prozent steigern
Der britische Chipentwickler ARM erwartet, dass sein Anteil am Markt für Mobilprozessoren, die in Tablets, Notebooks und Netbooks zum Einsatz kommen, bis 2015 auf 50 Prozent ansteigen wird. Twitter gibt auf Gerichtsbeschluss Nutzeridentität preis

Code Pilot 2.0 with XCode 4 compatibility
Macoscope has released version 2.0 of its XCode navigation plugin, Code Pilot. Technically it's still a beta -- judging from the 2.0b6 version number -- but it's been rock solid for me so far. This version brings XCode 4 compatibility and a revamped interface. If you code and you haven't tried it, definitely take a look.
Code Pilot attaches to Shift-Command-X in XCode, and the hotkey brings up a HUD with a search field focused. As you type, it quickly and intelligently filters the files in your project down to the one you were looking for. iPhone 4S im August, iPhone 5 im Frühjahr 2012?
Schon seit Monaten wird über den Erscheinungszeitpunkt der nächsten iPhone-Generation spekuliert. Es wird allgemein angenommen, dass Apple auf der WWDC nächste Woche noch kein iPhone 5 präsentieren wird, Apple selbst hat sich aber nie offiziell zum iPhone-Fahrplan geäussert. Einem aktuellen Bericht zufolge wird das nächste Apple-Mobiltelefon Anfang August - vermutlich als iPhone 4S - erscheinen und über weite Stecken dem iPhone 4 gleichen. So oder ähnlich könnte es kommen: laut Macotakara wird das iPhone 4S, vom Formfaktor her nur ein leicht aufgefrischtes iPhone 4 sein und zwischen Juli und August kommen. Das iPhone 4S soll eine 8-Megapixel Kamera haben und mit einem ARM Cortex A9 (aka A5, also der Gleiche wie im aktuellen iPad) ) kommen. Berlin und Lyon mit Apple Retail Store
Nach den USA erhielt Japan den ersten, danach England, Kanada, Italien, Australien und China Apple Retail Stores. Auch die Schweiz erhielt — nach zahlreichen Verzögerungen — noch vor Deutschland und Frankreich seine ersten Apple Retail Stores. Mittlerweile haben sowohl Deutschland als auch Frankreich mehr Stores, als die Schweiz. In Frankreich zählt man mittlerweile sechs Stores, im grossen Kanton deren fünf. Zuerst eröffnete — nur zwei-einhalb Monate nach den ersten beiden Schweizer Stores — in München ein Deutscher Apple Store, danach folgten welche in Hamburg, Oberhausen und Frankfurt weitere. Der jüngste steht Dresden. Nun soll auch die Deutsche Hauptstadt in den Genuss eines Apple Ladens

Intel coins 'ultrabook' concept, shows Android 3 on Medfield
Intel's Sean Maloney opened Computex in earnest with a keynote hoping to redefine the ultraportable notebook class. Now calling them "ultrabooks," Intel saw them as systems that were under 0.8 inches thick but could still start under $1,000. The category included systems like the ASUS UX21 and, by extension, the MacBook Air.

Apple will now replace your MacBook's bottom
Apple has debuted a new support program called (quite reasonably) the MacBook Bottom Case Replacement program. As 9to5Mac notes, there's been an issue with the rubber bottom part on some recent MacBook models where some glue problems may separate the rubber pad from the actual MacBook case.
If you have had such an issue with a MacBook sold in the past few years, Apple will be happy to replace it at any Apple Store. And if you don't want to bother with coming in, you can even order a replacement kit online, then just put the new case on yourself.
It's not a huge deal of course, and Apple says that if you're not having the problem, you obviously don't need to r

MSI has snuck a couple of new tablets into Computex, which we've naturally dug up, dusted off, and covered in fingerprints. The WindPad Enjoy 10 is a 10-inch Android Gingerbread slate with relatively humble specs -- 1024 x 768 resolution, 4GB of storage, 512MB of RAM, and a 27.3WHr battery -- but also a very modest asking price of $299. It comes with a 1.2GHz ARM Cortex A8 (single core) processor that's said to be able to play back 1080p video, and at least one of the dual 2 megapixel cameras should be able to record in 720p as well. SanDisk intros 100-series SSDs, chips for tablets, notebooks
SanDisk kicked off Computex with a trio of flash-based storage devices made for everything from phones through to ultraportables. The SanDisk SSD line gets the U100, a raw SATA III card that gives thin-and-light notebooks speed closer to desktop SSDs. They can read and write at high peak speeds of 450MB and 340MB per second respectively and yet can fit in anything from a half-sized, slim SSD card through to 2.5-inch, enclosed designs meant for conventional notebooks.

Google's Mayer skips question of Apple dropping Google Maps
Google's Location VP Marissa Mayer in an interview at the recently wrapped up TechCrunch Disrupt event skirted the question of Apple possibly dropping Google Maps. When asked what Google will do if iOS suddenly stops using its engine in favor of an in-house solution, Mayer sand she was "not going to speculate" as to future plans. Robot Ruby solves Rubik's Cube in 10.69 seconds, still can't beat humans (video)
There are a few robots smart enough to solve a Rubik's Cube in seconds flat, but a group of students at Swinburne University of Technology think theirs may be the fastest on Earth. Their bot, named Ruby, recently mastered the puzzle in just 10.69 seconds, including the time spent analyzing the cube. Why would a group of researchers develop a table full of rods that mimic the movements of microscopic hairs? It's a fair question, and Keio University's Yusuke Kamiyama certainly doesn't offer up much in the way of real world applications for such technology. Nova Media unveils iCON 461 unlocked 3G USB stick modem
