Researchers debut one-cubic-millimeter computer, want to stick it in your eye

This as-of-yet-unnamed mini computer was fashioned as an implantable eye pressure monitor for glaucoma patients, but its creators envision a future where we're all crawling with the little buggers. Taking up just over one cubic millimeter of space, the thing stuffs a pressure sensor, memory, thin-film battery, solar cell, wireless radio, and low-power microprocessor all into one very small translucent container. More discoveries in the Lion developer preview have implied that Apple's MobileMe revamp may bring new features to the Mac as well. A finding in the code shows references to a "Find My Mac" identifier that would help users track a lost or stolen Mac. The 9to5 tip didn't glean functionality, but it would presumably use Wi-Fi geolocation much as Snow Leopard can already use Wi-Fi positioning to get the local time.

Nintendo launched into a new generation of handhelds on Saturday with the official release of the 3DS in its home nation of Japan. McNealy: 'No iPhones, no iPads' if Sun had bought Apple

Former Sun Microsystems CEO Scott McNealy revealed in a recent talk that had Sun been able to close a deal to acquire Apple in 1996, some of the company's most famous technology -- such as iPads and iPhones -- wouldn't exist, reports eWeek. Clockwise from the top left, that's the the Sprint Arrive, the likely-for-Verizon Merge, the Sprint Evo Shift 4G, and the T-Mobile G2. If we had to rate them, we'd say the Arrive has the best key feel, followed by the Merge, the Evo Shift, and finally the cramped G2 -- although the super cheap-feeling hinge on the Evo Shift knocks off several points. We'd also say the physical keys on the G2 feel better than the mushy keys on the Merge, but the G2's cramped layout doesn't do it any favors. Indendent security researchers are selectively being invited by Apple to join in on the developer preview release of Lion, signalling a shift in policy by the company and a desire to get outside views on security improvements in OS X 10.7, according to a report on CNet. Apple may surprise with near immediate availability of iPad 2 next week

While media reports have shed considerable doubt on Apple's capacity to facilitate a full-scale launch of its second-generation iPad in the short term, AppleInsider has reason to believe that customers could be holding the new tablet device in their hands shortly after next Wednesday's press event.

Developer: BlackBerry PlayBook apps too costly, too obtuse

An open letter to RIM has given a look into potentially serious problems with the development process for the BlackBerry PlayBook. Jamie Murai noted that the costs of getting involved were far more expensive than with the iPad or Android. The PlayBook will not only cost $200 for most developers but only covers the first 10 apps; users also need to have a full copy of VMware Fusion or another ISO-friendly virtual machine to run the emulator, which could cost another $80.

Barclays: iPad 2 will ship in April

Barclays analyst Kirk Yang has told investors that the iPad 2 will ship in April, just like its predecessor, according to a report on Digital Daily. The new model is expected to be unveiled at a special event next Wednesday in San Francisco, but speculation persists on exactly when it will actually hit stores. Citing supply chain sources, Yang believes Apple is shooting for shipments to begin in early April, or around the same date as the original Wi-Fi only model of iPad hit stores one year ago. The silly season: Two fun, fan-made videos of the iPad 2

With all the buzz of anticipation of the iPad2 expected release on March 2nd I thought it would be fun to put up a couple of videos circulating the Internets on just what to expect. The first one by Exkild is a full and detailed explanation of all the new magical features of the new 27" device. Netflix: 30 percent of Watch Instantly titles subbed with more on the way, plus Xbox & Roku support

It's been a slow climb since Netflix first announced it was adding closed captioning to the PC and Mac in early 2010, but today's blog post indicates its reached 30% of the available titles. So far platforms on the second revision of its streaming frontend like the PS3, Boxee Box, Google TV and Nintendo Wii support optional captions while the Xbox 360 and Roku players should "later this year." Jack and Joe a lovely interactive book for small children

Jack and Joe (US $2.99) is the first of what will surely become a series of interactive storybooks for small children from the Stupid Art Company. This is an independent universal app written and illustrated by Bard Hole Standal and programmed by his brother Odin Hall Standal. It's a 27 page buddy story about the friendship of Jack, a cute blonde haired boy, and his Siberian Husky puppy Joe. The illustrations are appropriately simple and colorful, telling a warm and comforting story that is sure to please the smallest of readers. There's nothing scary here outside of a threatening bee. With the excellent narration of Katie Leigh, the story is read with no words being highlighted.
