Nokia's first Windows Phone device already spotted
The first Windows Phone device to come out of Nokia's Microsoft deal has already been spotted on Friday. The full-touch device is superficially an upscale C7 but with a larger touchscreen and WP7's signature three-key layout in touch-sensitive buttons. In keeping with Nokia's tendency to multiple colors, the Engadget renders show bright blue and pink backs in addition to a conservative black.

Opera Mini for iPad set for debut
According to a report from Macworld, the iPad is about to get its own version of the popular Opera Mini web browser. The new iPad-centric version will supposedly be released at the Mobile World Congress event starting in Barcelona next week, along with updated versions for the iPhone, Android and BlackBerry mobile platforms. Speaking with Macworld, Opera CEO Lars Boilesen said that "Our developers have been hard at work building the mobile browser of the future for both consumers and mobile operators."

Chitika: Verizon already up to 3% of iPhone traffic
Ad network Chitika Insights has launched a live iPhone carrier tracker that will show the percentage of the handsets at each provider. The tracker will get hourly updates and represent a 24-hour rolling average throughout the day by recording traffic on cellular connections. While the Verizon iPhone has just launched recently, its share has already reached three percent of iPhone-based traffic.

Nokia uses Apple's Macs to announce Microsoft partnership
When Nokia wanted to convince the world that it would bring consumers "stellar hardware and innovative software and great services" in its partnership with Microsoft, it turned to Apple's Mac-only iMovie to get word out, apparently violating the non-commercial use clause in Apple's licensing agreement.

Apple to redesign iOS notification system
Cult of Mac is reporting that Apple is planning a revamp to its iOS notification system. iOS's current notification system, which is used for everything from text messages to push notifications, has remained virtually unchanged since the introduction of the original iPhone in 2007. The current notification system uses a series of pop-up bezels which are sometimes cramped with information or, worse, fails to display adequate information in an easy to view manner. A good example of this is when you receive two text messages: you are only notified that you have two texts, and can't see the content of the text message without entering the Messages app.

Google details low-level Renderscript API for Honeycomb

Seagate GoFlex TV, FreeAgent Theater+ HD get iOS remote

Sony hints at pulling music from iTunes
Sony introduced Music Unlimited in Europe last year and is slated to kick off the streaming music service in Australia soon. The subscription service has a library of 6 million tracks that can be streamed wirelessly to Sony TVs, Blu-ray players and the PlayStation 3 with support for portable devices and mobile phones in the future. Before this Australian launch, Michael Ephraim, the CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment, sat down with The Age, a Melbourne-based newspaper.

MacBook Pro only delayed slightly by Sandy Bridge glitch
Apple's next MacBook Pro update was only slightly impacted by Intel's Sandy Bridge chipset flaw, sources said Friday. Some, though not all, of the notebooks were reportedly affected and needed minor logic board changes to prevent the SATA slowdown bug affecting 6 series chipsets. Apple is not only working on a new notification system for iOS, but is buying a small developer to make it possible, a source claims. One of the less popular aspects of the firmware, the current notification system is sometimes seen as intrusive, and potentially confusing, since there may be little room to display text. Honda to unveil new EV in Geneva, said to 'hint strongly' at what the Fit EV will look like

Apple to increase production to meet laptop demand
According to a report out of Digitimes, Apple is doubling the orders of select notebook models in response to increasing demand during this opening quarter of the year. Apple and Samsung are reportedly riding a wave of increasing demand and boosting production, while other manufacturers are preparing for a 5-10% decline in sales that will lower production to last year's level.

Analyst says Bloomberg took NFC iPhone talk out of context
Envisioneering Group analyst Richard Doherty said on Wednesday that Bloomberg had distorted his talk of a possible NFC-aware iPhone. While he maintained that he has Chinese sources working on iPhone parts, he told NFC Times that these sources had only talked to app developers who speculated NFC wireless was coming. Intel to start shipping remedied Cougar Point chipsets on February 14th

MPEG-LA calls for instances of Google's WebM patent
Google's WebM video standard came under renewed threat on Thursday with an MPEG-LA request. The video standards group is asking members for any instances in which a company believes one of the VP8 format patents behind WebM might have violated its patents. Sandy Bridge memory performance tested, value of expensive top-shelf memory questioned
Intel's Sandy Bridge chipset hasn't exactly had a flawless launch, but let's move past that and take a look at how well it performs before it starts breaking. LG Optimus 3D previewed in remarkably convincing teaser video
We just saw a brief teaser video for the LG Optimus 3D a few days ago, but another, longer one has now also surfaced that shows just how much the phone's glasses-free 3D display can help you in everyday situations -- like practicing yoga. As explained by LG, some things are simply too complicated to be conveyed by a two-dimensional medium like a big screen TV, and can only truly be grasped by holding a phone and looking at a 4-inch screen while standing on one leg. Sports Illustrated subscriptions live for Android, not iPad
Time Inc. today took digital subscriptions live today for Sports Illustrated. Along with the earlier webOS plans, it now has both a web edition of the service as well as Android editions for smartphones and tablets. The initial Android apps support Samsung's Galaxy and Galaxy Tab devices first but should expand later.

AT&T giving 1,000-minute bonuses to iPhone subscribers
AT&T is giving at least some iPhone subscribers a bonus 1,000 rollover voice minutes, accounts say. The offer is available only through a text notification, to which people must reply "yes" by March 31st. Debunk: Clamcase now shipping, manufacturing problems remedied
You may remember that we had an oh-so-brief hands-on with the Clamcase back at CES, and at that time we were promised a review unit the following week. Need something to go with your colorful new NEX-5 Lego viewfinder? How about a Lego shutter release? Verizon finally introduces iPhone to areas with no AT&T coverage
Up until yesterday, mobile phone customers in vast parts of Montana, Wyoming, North and South Dakota, and Nebraska had no way to get an iPhone. Why? There simply wasn't any AT&T coverage in these areas, so the customers -- who were mostly on Verizon -- had no access to the popular smartphone.

Sony exec aims at eventually pulling music from iTunes
The CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment, Michal Ephraim, says his company eventually hoping to stop selling music through the iTunes Store. The company has been globally rolling out a service called Music Unlimited, which differs from the iTunes Store in being based on streaming subscriptions. "If we do [succeed with Music Unlimited], then does Sony Music need to provide content to iTunes?" Ephraim tells Australian newspaper The Age. "Currently we do. We have to provide it to iTunes as that's the format right now."

Hitachi hat ein 4,5-Zoll IPS LCD-Display mit 1280x720 Pixeln und unglaublichen 329 dpi Auflösung angekündigt. Das ist um einiges mehr als auf dem iPhone 4. Aber es kommt noch besser. Zudem gibt es einen Kontrast von 1100:1 und eine Helligkeit von 500cd/m2. Intel 'not blinking' on MeeGo, Nokia workers in protest
Nokia's decision to switch to Windows Phone for its devices has triggered harsh reactions both from Intel and within Nokia itself. Apple seeds fourth Mac OS X 10.6.7 beta build to developers
AppleInsider is reporting that Apple has seeded another beta build of Mac OS X 10.6.7 to developers for testing. Build 10J855 comes just over a week after the previous beta release. This is the fourth build of 10.6.7 to be released within the last four weeks.
Apple is requesting that developers continue to test AirPort, SMB file sharing, Bonjour, graphics drivers and the Mac App Store application. No known issues are reported with this build. The combo build weighs in at 1 GB and 412.6 MB for the delta build.

Sorry to burst your bubble, iPad owners, but owning and using an iPad doesn't exactly make the opposite sex swoon, at least according to Retrevo 's Gadgetology Report. The report asked consumers if they notice other people's gadgets and, if so, how they react to them, and it turns out that seeing someone use an iPad is lower on the standard "I find you attractive" scale than seeing them with a pile of books. Samsung releases 8 and 12 megapixel CMOS smartphone sensors, shoots 1080p on the go
What the world needs now is more pixels up in your phone, and Samsung has a selection of new offerings that offer just that for stills and vids. It's released details on two new sensors, one, the S5K3H2, clocking in at eight megapixels and the other, the S5K3L1, at 12. Both will record 1080p video, with the 12 megapixel offering doing it at up to 60 fps -- the lesser model makes do with a mere 30. Both can capture full-res stills at 30fps and, naturally, both are really tiny for fitting into things like smartphones.

The first day of Verizon iPhone sales showed decent results, even if there wasn't "blowout" demand, notes RBC Capital Markets' Mike Abramsky. Hitachi makes 4.5-inch, 720p 'Retina Display' for phones
Hitachi today rolled out a display that it compared closely to Apple's Retina Display on the iPhone. The 4.5-inch LCD produces an extremely dense 1280x720 (720p) resolution which, at 329 pixels per inch, is exactly as sharp as Apple's 960x640, 3.5-inch screen. Nokia starts huge restructuring plan, rules out Android
Nokia as part of its shift to Windows Phone outlined major changes in organization. Along with moving Jo Harlow to lead the Smart Devices group, which should now handle MeeGo and Symbian as well as Windows Phone, it will put Mary McDowell at the head of the Mobile Phones group that handles basic feature phones. Laut Digitimes sind Apple und Samsung derzeit die einzigen großen Notebook-Hersteller, die eine Produktionssteigerung vermelden konnten. TUAW's Daily App: UNO
Everybody knows UNO, the classic card game where you have to match cards going around a table and try to clear out your hand before someone else clears out theirs. Gameloft produced the iPhone version, and it's a respectable recreation of the card game that's available in single or multiplayer. The game even has some extra rule sets, so if you're tired of the core game, you can try some others. Nokia Windows Phone: Elop und Ballmer liefern Details, Symbian wird abgeschafft

Nach der offiziellen Vorstellung gab es noch eine Frage-Antwort Session und da gab es zumindest ein paar Details zur neuen Nokia Windows Kooperation zu vermelden.
- Wann genau das erste Nokia Windows Phone zu erwarten sein wird, ist noch ungewiss, aber die Ingenieure beider Firmen haben laut Ballmer schon eine gewisse Zeit miteinander verbracht.
- Elop betont: Nokia wird nicht nach Sillicon Valley oder sonst wo hinziehen, sondern immer eine Finnische Firma bleiben.

Nokia to use Windows Phone: 'it's now a three-horse race'
Nokia during its financial meeting today confirmed a historic deal with Microsoft to switch primarily to Windows Phone in return for key deals. The phone maker will use Windows Phone as its "principal" smartphone strategy for the future, including the use of mobile Office and Xbox Live. Nokia will be able to customize 'everything' in Windows Phone 7, but likely won't
Stephen Elop, in his financial and strategy briefing continuing Nokia's marathon Capital Markets Day, just posed an interesting rhetorical question: will Nokia be able to "customize everything" on Windows Phone 7 in order to differentiate itself? Am gestrigen Donnerstag mussten die Börsianer in den USA mit ansehen, wie der AAPL-Kurs innerhalb weniger Minuten um 6 US-Dollar fiel. Aspyr updates Civilization V for Mac with downloadable content
Aspyr Media has updated the Mac version of Civilization 5 to fix a few bugs and include support for all of the various DLC packs. The downloadable content includes various new civilizations to play with, plus map packs that load up certain areas or scenarios to rule and conquer as your favorite civ.
Unfortunately, the game isn't in the Mac App Store, but it's available at the usual places to buy Mac games online, including Steam. As you'll know if you've ever played any version of Civ, it's a terrific game, and it's good to see that the Mac version has capability for all the DLC now

Nokia Q&A reveals more Symbian and MeeGo details, Android explored but 'risk of commodification was very high'
The Steve show just ended with both Elop and Ballmer hosting a media Q&A following the reveal of Nokia's plan to use Windows Phone 7 as its "primary smartphone platform." Here are the highlights:
No specific announcement for when we'll see the first Nokia Windows Phone. Ballmer mentioned that the engineering teams have spend a lot of time together already.
Elop also confirmed that Nokia is a Finnish company and always will be -- they will not be moving to Silicon Valley or anywhere else.

Follow-up: Counterfeit 'Lugaru' title pulled from App Store
Earlier this month we reported on the story of Lugaru HD, a game involving battles between anthropomorphized rabbits and wolves for which a pirated, re-submitted version simply called Lugaru was posted on the Mac App Store. After a few days of inaction following the notification of Apple, original developer Wolfire Games went public with the story, explaining that a company calling itself iCoder had simply downloaded the app and re-submitted it to the App Store at a different price under their own name. Steve Jobs working from home on next iPad, iPhone
The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Steve Jobs is actively involved in strategic decisions and product development despite his health-related leave of absence from Apple. According to WSJ sources, Jobs has been taking business meetings at his home and on the phone. Two of the areas in which Jobs is actively involved are the next generation iPad, widely expected to go on sale in the next month, and the next generation iPhone.

T2 is not a cyborg, is the new more colorful Traktor
Native Instruments just unveiled a lot of enhancements to their current line of DJ software. Before, we didn't even know we were just dealing with T1, but it feels good to know that going forward, everything from Traktor Scratch Pro to Traktor Duo will have T2 inside, which features a more Serato-like waveform colorization scheme called TruWave. Mac OS X 10.6.7 beta 4 released to developers
Keeping to a recent pattern of weekly updates, Apple late today brought out its fourth beta of OS X 10.6.7, build 10J855, with no known issues but again requesting developers focus testing on the Mac App Store. The new build is available as either a 1GB combo update or a 412.6MB delta. Developers are also requested -- as has been the case with all the 10.6.7 betas so far -- to focus on Airport, Bonjour, SMB file sharing and graphics.

HTC prepping VoLTE-enabled smartphone for MetroPCS

Bloomberg: Apple prepping cheaper phones?
Rumors of a smaller, cheaper iPhone are definitely not new and have floated around for nearly the life of the device. But Bloomberg has an article out today saying that Steve Jobs, despite being out on medical leave, is involved in strategic decisions involving a smaller, cheaper, more universal iPhone. Bloomberg quotes its unnamed source by saying the new phone would retail for about $200, lose the contract, have a universal SIM card and be a third smaller than the current iPhone 4.

American Express launches iTunes offer: five free songs
