FTA awards $16.6 million in grants for fuel cell bus research

While we were jealously hung up on South Korea's working electric bus system, Christmas apparently came early for a couple of lucky US fuel cell bus research projects -- in the form of $16.6 million in Federal Transit Administration grants. Pasadena based Calstart snagged almost $10.2 million and will funnel 70 percent of the funds to developing the first phase of a low-cost, longer lasting fuel cell power system. Calstart will then spend its remaining $2.9 million in partnership with the Chicago Regional Transit Authority to devel

Former Apple Store employee sues for discrimination, claims bizarre ordeal

The Apple Store in the SoHo section of New York City has reportedly been sued for discrimination by a former employee, who claims that she was unlawfully fired after taking a medical leave. Nicole Sullivan started working for Apple in 2008, and then took a leave in 2009 because of a nervous disorder. Despite being told that Apple wouldn't learn of her diagnosis, she claims that when she returned to the store, her coworkers clearly knew what had happened. What happened next sounds even more bizarre -- she was given a desk in the store's basement, and when she tried to apply for positions on the store floor, was told that "there were questions about her mental stability." MySpace may slash half its jobs, still looking at sell-off

MySpace might cut up to 50 percent of its staff to stay alive if a leak from multiple industry tipsters on Friday is accurate. Planning is underway for cuts that could reach up to half of its roughly 1,100 workers both in the US and worldwide. Details were still very much uncertain, AllThingsD said, and could be less.

WakeMate sleep-aid recalled due to 'exploding' USB charger, gives new meaning to being hot in the sack

Early this morning, Perfect Third Inc. -- makers of the less than perfect WakeMate wristband -- issued a recall for the sleep analyzer's USB charger, which apparently has a tendency to go up in smoke, and we don't mean disappear. An e-mail sent out by the company's CEO at 12:30 AM states, "we were informed by a customer of a safety incident with the black USB chargers." A little vague if you ask us, considering the video we received shows the device "smoking after exploding." The recall ensures that the WakeMate itself is perfectly safe, and that the Chinese-manufactured USB cables are at fault, but if you ask us, anything that is supposed to help you slee

UltraEdit makes the leap to Mac OS X

UltraEdit for Mac was officially released this month. A favorite of Windows developers, UltraEdit was first released in 1994 as one of the earliest "Notepad" replacement text editors for programmers on Windows. When you use your computer for programming, you live in your text editor. Mac developers love TextMate's project management and plug-ins, BBEdit's built-in code validation, or its freeware sibling TextWrangler's fantastic find and replace. Apple job listing hints at deeper CPU design

Apple in a low-profile move has posted a job listing for a CPU Microarchitect. The hire would work out of the company's Cupertino headquarters to shape the microarchitecture of a processor. Like most positions, it didn't give a clue as to the product but stressed the mobile side, as the team member would focus on designing around "power, [clock speed] timing, and [chip] area."

OpenFeint sees giant spike in Christmas users and downloads

Here's some more evidence that the App Store had a really amazing holiday weekend last week. OpenFeint has announced that it saw a 184% spike in new users on Christmas Day last week, the largest single day in the service's history for new users. Over the four days around the holiday, OpenFeint reportedly added more than 1.4 million new users to the service. Downloads were also really high, with five million OpenFeint-enabled games downloaded over the holiday weekend. Discovering iPad nano recovery mode

Steven Troughton-Smith writes on his personal weblog that he may have discovered a way to put his iPod nano into some kind of DFU-like recovery mode. By holding down the restart buttons through two reboots, iTunes will see the device and alert the user. Entering DFU/Recovery mode allows hackers to submit customized software to iOS devices and doing so with the nano offers the promise of adding modified software. Troughton-Smith tells TUAW that he can now "can push firmware files to the device and have them execute." From there, he can boot disk mode or the OS using those firmware files. New image of Olympus E-PL2 leaks, shows off macro spotlight

We've already seen leaked images of the Olympus E-PL2, the much talked about follow up to the E-PL1. The Micro Four Thirds is expected to boast a new 14-42mm f/3.5 - 5.6 kit lens, a 'direct movie' button, a high-resolution 3-inch display, and an optional Bluetooth model. From the new image above, however, we can see that there will also be an optional 'Medusa' version of the cam with a closeup spotlight for all those insane macro shots you'll undoubtedly be taking. The adjustable LED will also not require an extra battery, so this is one add-on we'll definitely be seriously considering.

iPad 2 case makers admit to leaked info, Alibaba cracks down

Some of the companies behind recent iPad 2 case listings at online retailers like Alibaba have claimed or strongly implied that the information was obtained directly from Foxconn's parent firm Hon Hai. Fullchance Industrial, one of these companies, said in an interview on Friday that it was actively working with Hon Hai and had schematics directly from the contract manufacturer. The details were "extremely accurate," he told the Wall Street Journal when asked.

As I've been exploring the newest Apple TV, people keep asking to see if I can push boundaries in new directions. Apple TV's concept of a wireless video endpoint that connects to a large screen TV has excited a lot of people. Although I haven't yet been able to produce a way to show live game screens from iPhones (games are likely going to have to rely on local Apple TV resource processing for that, probably involving a unit jailbreak at least at first), Apple's AirPlay does provide a ready way to give presentations using a Mac and Apple TV. Caris: iPad to hold on to 67% of tablet field in 2011

A new analyst note from Caris & Co. analyst Robert Cihra has forecast that Apple will hold on to its majority market share of tablets in 2011. He expected the iPad to keep 67 percent of the market owing both to the rapid early adoption but also to lag time for rivals, who were sent "back to the drawing board." Like with an iSuppli estimate, Cihra saw the delay giving Apple a head start, even as the tablet market tripled in size to 54 million next year, 36 million of which would be iPads.

WakeMate warns USB chargers may catch fire, issues recall

WakeMate has sent out a warning that its new sleep helper device's USB power charger was defective. A notice to customers explained that there was at least one instance of the brick catching fire. Every user was asked to stop using the adapter immediately and return it, although the company stressed that the WakeMate itself was safe and that charging from a computer would work.

The developers behind Canabalt confirmed that the game's source code will be made available as part of an open source project. The game will be licensed under the MIT Open Source license, which will let other developers use the engine source code in its entirety for both personal and commercial projects. Borders stalls book payments, doubts survival in e-book era

Borders has been delaying payments to book publishers in signs that it may be one of the first major victims of e-books. Early reports from Publishers Marketplace on Friday said it was putting off the payments to help refinance its debt but also wasn't certain that the plan would be effective. Apple reaches for patent on lookaway touch gestures

A newly-disclosed Apple patent application suggests support of touch gestures which can be used while looking away from a screen. A recurring problem with Apple's modern touchscreen devices is the inability to control some functions while looking away, limiting usefulness during activities like workouts. Under the proposed scheme, people would be able to control media playback through gestures that don't even require a screen to display graphics.

There is little doubt that Apple was intent on selling a lot of iPads this holiday season. The world's first shipped RED EPIC gets stolen in home break-in

Remember just earlier this month when OffHollywood studio head Mark Pederson became the first man to own a RED EPIC? Well, now his $58,000 über camera is gone. Professional and amateur analysts alike are widely split on how many iPads Apple may have sold in the fiscal quarter which ended Christmas Day, Fortune notes. Predictions for Q1 2011 are said to be more conservative than those for Q4 2010, which were so overeager that they were off by as much as 2.3 million. Korean carriers turn down Nexus S, say iPhone not at risk

Korean cell carriers are turning down the Nexus S both because of Google's control but also because of Apple, insider tips said late Thursday. GLONASS: Die russische iPhone Konkurrenz im Putin Hands-On (Video)

Wir hatten euch vor langer Zeit schon einmal Ministerpräsidenten bei der Vorstellung der russischen Smartphone-Glorie gezeigt, damals noch mit Doppel-Touchscreen, jetzt geht es an die iPhone Konkurrenz und man ist offensichtlich glücklich ein echtes in den Händen zu halten, nicht nur ein Mockup. Wirklich genaue Spezifikationen sind aber immer noch nicht zu haben, ausser natürlich, dass es die russische GPS Variante GLONASS nutzt. VoX, Nimbuzz team up for SIP VOIP calling

The iPhone version of Nimbuzz, a popular IM and VOIP calling app, has added VoX Communications as a SIP/VOIP partner for outgoing calls. Once you have a fair number of apps on your iOS device, you might find that you occasionally "lose" an app somewhere in the pages and/or folders of your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad. Handily, there's a trick for locating that app using iTunes. I consider myself a seasoned iTunes/iPhone user, and this simple little tip was a surprise to me. It might be to you, too! SEC forms show Apple execs donated $3 million in 2010

A few Securities and Exchange Commission forms filed this week show that Apple executives gave shares of Apple stock to various charities right around mid-December. The stocks added up to a value of about three million dollars across the four executives that gave. Unfortunately, none of the charities designated to receive the money were listed in the forms. Millard Drexler, the CEO of J. Crew and a member of Apple's board, gave away a total of 6,800 shares, as you can see above, and the other givers are also board members or executives. It's good to see the generosity flowing in Cupertino this year.
