Last month, we noted that Apple has owned the iTun.es domain since December 2006 and with Apple rolling out Twitter integration for its Ping social networking service speculated that Apple could use the domain as a link shortener.

Kin Studio shutters Jan. 31, Verizon offers free phone swaps
A leak on Saturday has signalled that Microsoft is backing away more permanently from the Kin One and Two. The platform's Kin Studio online backup and sharing service will shut down January 31, less than a year after it went live, and will take away nearly all the features unique to the two phones. While e-mail, web browsing and Zune Pass streaming over Wi-Fi will still work, WPCentral's copy of a memo has the home screen social network updates (Kin Loop), direct Facebook updates, Facebook media sharing and the RSS reader will stop working.

Kin Studio closing January 31st, Verizon offers free phones to affected customers

LG Star gets hands-on, may be fastest phone yet
The LG Star received a more extensive hands-on today that suggested it could be one of the most advanced smartphones to date when it launches next year. It so far remains the first smartphone known to be using NVIDIA's dual-core Tegra 2 and, as promised earlier, is much faster in benchmarks than any other Android phone so far. Delta Airlines to install gate-area charging stations in 19 U.S. airports
Delta Airlines is helping to make life a bit easier for travelers that hope to top off their batteries before getting onto a plane. Until now, fliers often had to scour the corners of gate areas to find an available outlet to scrounge some spare electrons. Last week, the world's largest airline began installing charging stations in the gate areas of 19 U.S. airports. Unsere Kollegen haben auf der GigaOMs NetWork 2010-Konferenz in San Francisco den Telepräsenz-Besenstiel der Firma Anybots getroffen. Ihr erinnert euch - der sogenannte QB ist ein Roboter, der als Blech-Avatar per Videokonferenz zugeschaltete Menschen repräsentieren soll. Eine unterhaltende aber doch recht unpersönliche Erfahrung - etwa so sexy wie ein Gespräch mit einer Parkuhr, wie ihr in den Videos nach dem Break sehen könnt. Das erste zeigt eine Begegnung mit dem Bot, das zweite Video ist aus Sicht der Person aufgenommen, die ihn kontrolliert.

Android Market revamped to fight iOS in discovery, games
Google tonight rolled out a redesigned version of Android Market with an aim to close gaps between its store and Apple's. The update goes beyond showing related apps and now has a carousel on the home screen that better shows highlighted apps. If you were waiting until today to take advantage of Radio Shack's deep, deep discount on an iPhone, you're most likely out of luck. Apple today posted a job listing for a Verizon iPad Systems Engineer that confirmed both a deeper connection to Verizon and to enterprise sales. The position is targeted at integrating the iPad with Verizon's business customers and will depend on knowing the tablet's corporate support, such as Exchange syncing and VPN access. Snapstick could use your iPhone to program your television
The video after the break shows off a product called Snapstick, though there's not actually a product yet, just more of an idea. The idea is that you select a bit of web content (like a YouTube video or Hulu show) on your phone, and then use a flicking motion to send that content up to a bigger screen like your TV. The company is really excited about the 'snapping" motion, but the idea is that you can use your phone to control what's shown on screen, and pull that from anywhere on the web.

Real Racing 2 coming to iOS December 16th
After a few weeks of teasing and hints, Firemint has finally revealed all about its upcoming Real Racing 2 game for iOS, and it looks extremely impressive. Six months after introducing an API to help enterprise and security applications tell if the OS has been compromised, Apple has disabled or removed the "jailbreak detection" method from iOS 4.2, Network World reports. 360 MacDev: Josh Abernathy on the mechanics of good UI design
As the 360 MacDev conference continued in Denver today, the attendees had a chance to stuff their faces with apple pie courtesy of a vendor, and then sat down to here a talk by Josh Abernathy of Maybe Apps on the mechanics of good UI design. Josh started by making a distinction between graphic design (making something pretty) and interaction design (making something that is a joy to use).
Abernathy was primarily focused on the graphic design of applications. He suggested that many developers hire a graphic designer to do this job, as programmers aren't necessarily good designers. TUAW Holiday Gift Guide: iPhone GPS apps
Well, another holiday approaches, and it's time for me to survey the field of apps that will help get you from here to there in a minimum of time and hassle.
I surveyed these apps last year, and some things have changed for the better. Prices are lower, there are more regional options (so you can buy a map that fits where you might be driving), and the addition of multi-tasking in iOS 4 makes a big difference to how useful these apps can be.
I think one of the biggest changes from last year is that the apps are now so solid and full featured that I can't think of a compelling reason to buy any of the dedicated GPS devices. With so many people using smartphones, I suspect these all in one GPS navigators will suffer diminished sales and

FCC: two thirds of US doesn't meet new broadband minimum
The FCC in a new study (PDF) published this week revealed that over two thirds of US broadband Internet access doesn't meet its newer broadband standards. About 68 percent of connections measured at the end of 2009 were below the 4Mbps download and 1Mbps upload speeds that qualify for the term. A full 58 percent didn't make 3Mbps downstream, and nearly half at 49 percent couldn't meet at least a 768Kbps upload rate.

It's all coming together, folks. It doesn't take much of a gander at the Chrome Web Store to notice a trend: some of the flashiest, most mature "apps" are actually just in-browser versions of iPad apps. And you know what else? Most of these "apps" actually run fine in Safari on the iPad. We're not sure how long Google gave developers to port their experiences over, but it seems like most of the best work had already been done in the form of HTML5 apps that were merely wrapped in app form for App Store delivery. Comcast testing '105Mbps for $105' promo
Cable and phone provider Comcast is rolling out a promotional bundle for its Extreme 105 high-speed Internet service. and he's a lot smaller in person. Okay, no, not the real Steve Jobs, but his incredible lifelike miniature. Many of you probably remember the big uproar a few weeks back that Apple had about M.I.C Gadget, a blog about Chinese life and subculture, manufacturing a doll in the great one's likeness. Real Racing 2 to bring 16-car grid, 3D view racing to iPhone
Firemint has announced the sequel to its Real Racing game for the iPhone, Real Racing 2, which is scheduled to arrive next week. The latest edition of the popular auto-racing game for iOS will feature 30 licensed cars and an expansive 16-car grid against the AI. The game offers career-mode play, covering over 10 hours of game time across a range of events. In addition to the career mode, gamers can play in Quick Race or Time Trial modes, along with local multiplayer, with up to 8 players, or online multiplayer with a maximum 16 players.
