Viacom files appeal in YouTube copyright case, continues to 'drag it out'
Don't worry -- that "drag it out" bit belongs to Google, not us. If you'll recall, the suits in Mountain View threw an underground party back in June when the federal court ruled that YouTube fell under the "safe harbor" provision of the DMCA which protects service providers from liability for user content. In essence, this ensured that Google couldn't be sued or held liable for damages caused by some prankster uploading a ripped episode of 30 Rock to the site, being that Google has promised to yank it post-haste if notified by the copyright owner. ThinkFlood releases software update for RedEye remote
ThinkFlood on Thursday announced the release of the latest software update for its RedEye Wi-Fi remote controls. Version 2.0.1 will allow users to setup and manage their RedEye systems from any browser that's connected to their home network. Thus far, RedEye users were relegated only to the iOS platform.

News Corp plays coy about iPad-exclusive publication, suggests 2011 launch
You've probably heard us mention the upcoming iPad-exclusive publication "The Daily" coming soon from Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. In fact, you have likely also read about the fact that it had been delayed until 2011. Well, now we have a maybe/sorta/kinda confirmation of the publication itself, as News Corp.'s chairman and chief executive Jon Miller let it slip that if The Daily does in fact exist, we should indeed expect it to launch in the first quarter of 2011. Chrome event confirmed by Google for December 7th
Well, it looks like our sources were right: Google just announced an event in San Francisco for December 7th, which promises "exciting news about Chrome." Naturally, we're expecting that to be the announcement of a Google-branded netbook that runs the Chrome OS, in addition to the launch of apps for Chrome. Interestingly, it's pretty short notice for this sort of announcement, and it's also conflicting with the D conference which is happening a few miles north on the same day. LimeWire confirms shutting down for good
LimeWire on Friday explained that its cancellation of music store plans was a full shutdown of the company. The company planned to close its New York office at the start of 2011. It didn't mention any follow-up companies or projects in a statement to AllThingsD.

Google gains US mobile ad share, Apple to follow
Google has taken a 59 percent share of the $877 million US mobile advertising market, according to a report. This was an increase of around 10 percent, which can largely be attributed to its purchase of AdMob as it held an 8.4 percent share on its acquisition by Google. Apple is expected to finish with just under 10 percent of the mobile advertising market that has doubled in value, up from $368 million in 2009.

TRENDnet outs 300Mbps Wireless N media bridge

Radio Shack has announced that it will be offering a $50 discount on all iPhone models beginning tomorrow, December 4, according to a new report. Patents aplenty: iPhone radio, fiber optic MagSafe, 3D without glasses
Apple's patent team must be cramming before the end of the year, because this past week we've seen a flood of patent applications come out of Cupertino. First up, Apple has patented a radio system in the iPhone (finally!), allowing you to listen to standard FM and AM broadcasts on the smartphone. The patent itself also includes an idea for a satellite radio connection, as well as a card to plug into Macs that would do the same thing. And there's a radio map idea as well, that would chart and let you browse nearby radio stations. Pretty cool idea -- hopefully we'll see it in the next iPhone revision.

Rogers adds 'data sharing' plans, will carry both WiFi and cellular versions of BlackBerry PlayBook
With the precedent the Galaxy Tab has set, it was an open question whether carriers would embrace the WiFi version of RIM's BlackBerry PlayBook -- after all, it's a little harder to fully monetize a data plan on a device that lacks its own cellular modem. Thing is, the WiFi version is the first one that's going to be available; RIM hasn't given much guidance yet on when the cellular version will follow on -- and RIM doesn't have much of a distribution channel outside its carrier partners. Verizon hits back at AT&T claims about 4G, says 3G improving
Verizon today answered criticism from AT&T of its LTE-based 4G rollout. Carrier spokesman Howard Waterman rebuffed claims by AT&T CTO John Donovan and spokespeople that the Verizon network would provide a "jarring speed degradation" on 3G by pointing to the quality of its service. It didn't promise speed upgrades but said it had spent $50 billion over the past decade to keep up its performance.

Nook Color gets an SDK, documentation aplenty

iPad appears in US House of Representatives
Politico picked up the story of a Democratic congressman rocking out an iPad white at the podium in the U.S. House of Representatives. The stylish iPad wielder was Henry Cuellar of the Texas 28th, who's described himself as a "techie."
According to Politico's interview with Cuellar, the congressman uses his iPad first thing in the morning to check the papers while enjoying his cup of coffee. He uses his tablet again in the evening to check his email and see if there are any important news stories.

Lawsuit accuses Apple of age bias in retail promotions
A Florida man, Michael Katz, is accusing Apple of breaking the state's Civil Rights Act through its promotion practices. Starting in March 2006, Katz began working at the Millenia Mall Apple Store in Orlando. 60 at the time, Katz says that he several times sought the chance to be promoted to Creative status, but was denied in every instance.

iTunes subs held up by Apple, background news app in 2011
Potential plans for iTunes subscriptions have been stalled primarily through Apple's refusal to move on its terms, according to details reportedly gleaned from the talks. The company has put forward an offer virtually unchanged from its regular iTunes terms, where the publisher would keep 70 percent, for a "couple months." Apple's only concession to calls for subscription data would be to give names, e-mail addresses and physical addresses, AllThingsD heard.

Solved: The case of the missing .Mac widgets
Back in April of 2005, Apple released the much-awaited Mac OS X 10.4 "Tiger" OS. One of the big new features of Tiger was Dashboard. The overlay feature supported Widgets, mini-apps that were the descendants of Mac OS 9 Desk Accessories, and that some might consider the precursors to modern iOS apps.
Dashboard widgets were (and still are) fairly useful tools, and some pretty cool eye candy to boot. But the number of widgets that shipped with Tiger were limited, and many hoped Apple would quickly release additional widgets. Apple eventually did add

World disappoints us once again: Japan loses 2022 3D holographic World Cup bid
Look, we don't know anything about World Cup bids. They probably have a lot to do with "infrastructure" and "taking turns" and stuff like that. But really, world? You couldn't pick Japan just this once? Viber for iPhone could give Skype a challenge
Viber is a new free VoIP app for the iPhone. It allows you to talk using the AT&T data network, rather than the cellular network. I kept looking for a catch, but there isn't one. Works on WiFi and 3G. Check. You don't need to create a friends list. Check. Alerts you to incoming calls without the app being open. Check. No ads. Check.
International and domestic calls between 2 Viber equipped iPhones are free. You aren't burning your voice plan minutes, and soon there will be Android and Blackberry versions. Of course, if you have a metered data plan, you may have to watch out to make sure you don't exceed the limit, but many long-time iPhone users are still hanging on to their unlimited data contracts.

Apple takes down AirPrint Hacktivator, and now it's back
Remember AirPrint Hacktivator?
It's the little hack that makes it possible for AirPrint to work with any shared printer on a Mac. We've covered the free app several times on TUAW, most recently when version 1.7 came out.
After we published that post, a TUAW reader pointed out that despite the fact that developer Netputing had touted "no Apple files are redistributed nor installed by the latest version," those files were indeed still in 1.7. TUAW contacted Netputing, and they immediately removed the files in version 1.7.1.

Dispute over Square card reader patent gets litigious
As folks who follow such things may be aware, there's been some dispute over the origin of Square's card reader technology more or less since the company (led by Twitter's Jack Dorsey) went public with it last year. That dispute has now gotten even more contentious, however, with Square and its chairman, James McKelvey, taking aim at REM Holdings and Robert Morley, who actually holds the patent to the technology. The key issue is that McKelvey is not listed as one of the inventors in the patent, despite claims that he was the one that actually conceived the idea in a "flash of inventive insight," and that he and Morley worked together to develop the idea (and later discussed obtaining patent

Google buys Phonetic Arts to get more natural phone speech
Google on Friday confirmed that it had bought Phonetic Arts in a boost to spoken text on mobile devices. The Cambridge, UK-based company is best known for a suite of tools that generate more natural-sounding computer-generated voices by blending phonemes together and sampling real voices. It would most likely be used for tools such as Google Maps Navigation on Android but also Google Translate and other independent features.

D-Link DCS-930L Wireless N Network Camera review
After we reviewed the DropCam Echo a few weeks back and found ourselves generally unimpressed, we received an e-mail from someone at D-Link saying something to the effect of: "Dude, you have to try out our thing, because our thing is totally better than their thing and costs a heck of a lot less too." We took them up on that offer and, while unfortunately D-Link's thing has a much less catchy name, DCS-930L Wireless N Camera hardly rolling off the tongue, the sub-$100 device does indeed live up to its billing -- for the most part.

Samsung sells 1 million Galaxy Tabs, vows 10-inch in 2011
Samsung today said it had sold its first million Galaxy Tab slates in two months. The milestone came after it reached 600,000 in its first month and came mostly from Europe and the US, though 10 percent were from Samsung's South Korean home. The results were enough for Samsung to raise its estimate for 2010 from one million tablets to 1.5 million.

comScore: Android's US share slowing, near even with iPhone
Android growth in the US is still significant but may have slowed down at the start of the fall, according to new comScore data. Google's mobile OS climbed to 23.5 percent in October, or 6.5 percent more than July, but a more modest 2.1 percent over the past month. If sustained through the rest of 2010, it would still be a high rate of growth but would still represent a rare dip in Android's pace at 6.3 percent.

The Guardian announces subscription-based news app, is rumored Newsstand looming?
AppleInsider reports that, on Thursday, The Guardian announced it will be replacing its current app with an all new version "soon." Although the current version of the app will continue to work (but eventually be discontinued), the new app is to introduce The Guardian's award-winning video, reader comments on articles, improved live blogs and landscape reading.
Jonathon Moore, the mobile product manager for The Guardian wrote, "We'll be launching the new app globally for the first time and although we can't confirm exactly when it will be available, we're working towards a pre-Christmas release."

Oh, my. A short tweet from the Twitter account SIRI_STOCK suggests that Howard Stern and Apple are "on the verge" of a huge deal: "Howard Stern on the verge of signing $600 million 3 year agreement with Apple to host an Internet/TV/iTunes broadcast. $SIRI."
It's true that Howard's contract with SIRIUS will expire in January of 2011, and that he's yet to formally announce his future plans for the show. Level 3 rebuffs Comcast: trying to 'change the rules'
Level 3 today rejected Comcast's denials in a video access dispute with a new FAQ. The network provider directly accused Comcast of lying about the nature of the fight and said it was a basic interconnection issue between the two rather than a "peering dispute" as Comcast had argued. Without a basic connection deal, Level 3 would have no way of getting content to Comcast users even by rerouting it, the company said.

Gameloft's holiday iOS releases: NOVA 2, Asphalt 6 and Shadow Guardian
Gameloft kindly allowed TUAW to sit in on a preview yesterday of the games it's planning on releasing later this year, and we got to see three new iOS titles. NOVA 2 (seen above) is the sequel to the very popular first-person shooter for iPhone. Asphalt 6: Adrenaline is the latest in Gameloft's high-quality racing series and Shadow Guardian is a brand new IP that borrows a lot from popular action/exploration games like Tomb Raider and Uncharted. After the break, you'll find descriptions of all three titles. They will be available for both iPhone and iPad sometime later on this year.
Gameloft is also releasing three more titles this year that we didn't get to see: Dungeon Hunter 2 (which is the sequel to the popular Diablo-style hack-and-slash RPG)

Mobiola WebCamera gets localization, AppleScript support
It's always nice when developers respond to the suggestions of reviewers.
A few weeks ago, I wrote a review of Mobiola Web Cam from SHAPE Services. It's a combination of an iPhone app and a desktop (Windows and Mac) client that turns your iPhone into a webcam. At one point in my review, I suggested that it would be nice to see scripting support built into the Mac desktop client for automating the process of capturing screen shots or video from the camera.
Just over two weeks later, the app has a slightly different name (WebCamera instead of Web Cam), it's localized in German, Italian, Spanish, French, and Dutch, and AppleScript support has been added. The app is

Mac users quickly come to know the /Applications/ directory, where you will find all of the default applications that come with OS X (Safari, Mail, iChat, Preview, iCal and so on), as well as the Utilities folder (/Applications/Utilities/), where more advanced users get to know Activity Monitor, Terminal, Network Utility, Airport Utility, Spaces and more.
If you have run an installer -- such as for iLife, iWork, Microsoft Office and so on‚ more than likely that installer has added programs to the /Applications/ folder. Several UK cellular carriers are now selling subsidized versions of the iPad, having previously relied on standard pre-paid options. Pentax K in limited Edition ist kein Scherz, dafür umso großartiger

Finden wir das jetzt strunzendämlich oder richtig groß. Irgendwie letzteres, weil wann hat man schon eine amtliche Kamera in so einem Design gesehen? Hipsterblogger sollten sich die Pentax K-r in der Roboterausgabe auf jeden Fall mal näher anschauen. Auf 100 Stück limitiert ist das gute Stück. Die Specs unterscheiden sich indes nicht vom "Original", dafür gibt es aber eine neue 35mm F2.4-Linse, die ebenfalls in den Grundfarben daherkommt. Vorbestellungen werden für 99.800 Yen ab dem 24. Dezember angenommen (903 Euro). Anfang Januar wird ausgeliefert.

iFan concept uses gusts to power your iPhone, solve lingering reception issues
Still haven't found that case you've been looking for? At last, the promise land. Designer Tjeerd Veenhoven has crafted a partly nifty, partly hilarious new wind-powered iPhone charger / case, appropriately dubbed iFan. In theory, at least, this here case would wrap your iPhone up for protection and then catch wind gusts from wherever, in turn rejuvenating your phone as you talked and walked. There's even a bicycle attachment mockup for those who'd rather place it on their handlebars and kick things up a notch. HTC responds to HD7 death grip reports, says some signal drop is 'inevitable'
Oh boy. We'd actually passed over reports that the HTC HD7 suffers from a "death grip" issue this past week, since we think it's been well-proven that you can get almost any phone to drop some signal if you hold it exactly right, but apparently the furor's gotten loud enough to merit an official HTC reponse. Chrome 7, iOS make big leaps in web share in November
Chrome 7 and iOS were the biggest winners for web market share in November, NetApplications said. Google's browser was reported as having the second fastest share gain of any individual browser version, jumping 5.64 percent to hit 8.02 percent of all browsers. All of Chrome reached 9.26 percent and widened a lead over Safari, which also gained but at 5.55 percent was still well behind.

Samsung wrests top spot in US Android phones from Motorola
Samsung today said it had taken the top spot in the US among Android manufacturers. The company was responsible for 32.1 percent of all Android phones sold in the US this summer, according to Gartner. Apple locks demos, betas out of Mac App Store
Through its developer services, Apple has provided some new instructions to coders working on software for the upcoming Mac App Store. In particular, Apple now says that demos and betas are explicitly blocked from submission. "Your website is the best place to provide demos, trial versions, or betas of your software for customers to explore," an update mentions. "The apps you submit to be reviewed for the Mac App Store should be fully functional, retail versions of your apps."

Mac OS X 10.6.6 build 10J537 seeded, Mac App Store clarification says no demos
Two items: last night Apple seeded another build of 10.6.6 (we reported a build had been sent back in November) build 10j537, and a Mac App Store statement from Apple has put the kibosh on any demo apps.
More intriguing is this bit as reported by Macstories, wherein developers are encouraged to host demos, trials and the like on their website. Presumably developer websites listed in the Mac App Store will lure buyers to the site, where they can download a demo. Then they'll come back to the Mac App Store and buy the full version. It'll be interesting to see

Live Nation releases free app
Ticket seller Live Nation has released its very own iOS app on the App Store -- you can download it for free there right now. Not only can you browse upcoming events and buy tickets to shows directly from within the app (as well as get news about presales and upcoming deals on tickets), but once you go to a show in person, you can pick up setlist information, see photos and videos and check-in with friends through social networks.
Personally, I have kind of an issue with Live Nation, given its rocky past with Clear Channel Communications and Ticketmaster, so I can't really recommend the app just to buy tickets with. The company's never really been generous to customers, to say the least, taking advantage of high tick

Apple expands Motorola lawsuit to include 12 more patents
Apple has quietly widened the scope of its ongoing countersuits against Motorola to include 12 more patents. The iPhone maker on Wednesday amended a Wisconsin lawsuit to accuse Motorola of infringing on 12 extra patents beyond the 12 that were already in play, most of which target Android. The move was a response to a motion for a declaratory judgment by Motorola in Delaware that could theoretically have ruled the patents invalid and prevented Apple from using them in court.

Wheemee Massageroboter tuckert über schmerzende Glieder

Nicht überrascht sein, dass diese Wheemee-Bots trotz ihres putzigen Namens ein wenig angsteinflössend, denn schliesslich waren die Ingenieure der israelischen Frima DreamBots früher einmal beim Militär beschäftigt. Natürlich soll die Massage durch die etwas spitz wirkenden Räder des Wheeme wirken und ein Gefühl des Streichelns und der Entspannung erzeugen. Dank Tilt Sensor fällt einem das Ding nicht vom Rücken und wer ein Haustier hat, der dürfte vermutlich gleich doppelten Spass damit haben. Gameloft's holiday iOS releases: NOVA 2, Asphalt 6 and Shadow Guardian
Gameloft kindly allowed TUAW to sit in on a preview yesterday of the games it's planning on releasing later this year, and we got to see three new iOS titles. NOVA 2 (seen above) is the sequel to the very popular first-person shooter for iPhone. Asphalt 6: Adrenaline is the latest in Gameloft's high-quality racing series and Shadow Guardian is a brand new IP that borrows a lot from popular action/exploration games like Tomb Raider and Uncharted. After the break, you'll find descriptions of all three titles. They will be available for both iPhone and iPad sometime later on this year.
Gameloft is also releasing three more titles this year that we didn't get to see: Dungeon Hunter 2 (which is the sequel to the popular Diablo-style hack-and-slash RPG)

EU hopes to cap, maybe eliminate European data roaming fees
The EU is expanding its limits on data roaming to where they might go away entirely, Commissioner Neelie Kroes said on Friday. While it put caps on data on the carriers themselves, the official noted that carriers weren't moving the lower charges on to customers. EU member of Parliament Paul Rübig suggested to the New York Times that the cap would either be applied to retail or that the wholesale cap would increase so much that prices might have to come down.

TUAW's Daily App: Rise of Atlantis HD
I really enjoyed (and still occasionally play) Russian developer Playrix's Call of Atlantis on the iPhone. It's a pretty straightforward match-3 game that nevertheless has a lot of appeal. Somehow, the pieces (including some weird-shaped boards), certain items that you need to release from the grid to match up and some special power-ups are tuned just right so that I find it more fun than most games of the type -- it's almost as great as PopCap's own Bejeweled. And now, the company has released the next game in the series, Rise of Atlantis as an HD version on the iPad.

Vodafone schnürt UMTS-Tarife für Tablets und Netbooks nach Geschwindigkeit

Es war zu erwarten. Vodafone kündigt an, ihr Netz ausgebaut zu haben und nun an 90% der UMTS-Standorte mit 14,4 Megabit aufzutrumpfen, 50% haben sogar 21,6 Megabit, Upload ist immer 5,8 Megabit. Und die Tarife werden auch gleich angepasst. Es gibt jetzt passend dazu auch angepasste Tarife: 24,99 für 3,6 Megabit Download, 29,99 für 7,2 und 49,99 für 21,6 Megabit im Monat. Nach Volumenverbrauch (3GB-10GB) wird gedrosselt. Alle Tarife haben auch SMS-, Telefon- und MMS-Funktionen, das Galaxy Tab kann somit auch damit laufen. AVG: Virenscanner-Update macht Windows 7 unbrauchbar

Unter Vorbehalt, weil wir es selbst nicht testen können: das “Subscriber Artificial Module” soll Push- und Aktivierungsprobleme beim Unlock und “Hacktivierung” auf nicht via iTunes aktivierten/aktivierbaren iPhones lösen. Wir hatten Polaroid Kameras ja schon vermisst, und der Weg einfach einen Drucker zu liefern war nun wirklich nicht genau das was wir von der Firma erwarten. Aber für die CES hat Polaroid jetzt einen Teaser geliefert, der aussieht, als käme die gute alte Polaroid Kamera die gleich lustige Photos ausspuckt die aussehen wie mit Instagram gemacht wieder zurück. Endlich gibt es mal ein Apple Patent, dass ein wenig interessanter ist. Das 3D System will ermöglichen verschiedenen Leuten gleichzeitig einen 3D Effekt ohne Brille zu ermöglichen und baut dabei auf eine Positionserkennung gemischt mit einer reflektiven Wand, die je nach Positionierung verschiedene Bilder an das rechte und das linke Auge schickt. Da das Patent schon von 2006 ist, scheint die Realisierung aber komplexer zu sein, als sich der Ingenieur gedacht hat.

ASUS netbook shipments may drop 25% in 2011 due to tablets
ASUS' netbook sales could drop by 25 percent or more next year due to the effect of the iPad and other tablets, reported industry estimates claimed today. The system builder is estimated to be shipping six million Eee PCs by the end of this year, or 50 percent of all its systems, but would ship just four to 4.5 million in 2011 with tablets factored in and would make up just 25 percent of its computers. The US Patent and Trademark Office has granted Apple a patent for a new power adapter that integrates fiber optics for data transfer. Images associated with the filing appear to show a MagSafe connector modified to carry a single fiber-optic cable or multiple channels. HTC defends HD7 'death grip' with Apple's language
HTC on Thursday defended itself against the HD7's reported antenna issue with language much like that used by Apple to defend the iPhone 4. It argued that it put a large amount of effort into the design of the Windows Phone 7 device and that it would keep working when the signal itself wasn't an issue. Perfect Photo Suite, the collection of digital image-enhancement tools from OnOne Software, has been updated to v5.5, including updates to almost all the components of the collection, a new version of Genuine Fractals now called Perfect Resize 7, along with the ability to run most of the suite's components in Apple's Apertureor Adobe's Lightroom without the need for a separate host application -- and in some cases, as their own standalone apps. The suite will also include a new product, Perfect Layers, which will ship early next year.

Twitter client Weet for Mac now available in beta
Twitter client Weet for iPhone (US $0.99) has been available on the App Store for a while now, but fans of the mobile interface can now give it a try on their Macs, too. PSA: Botched AVG 2011 update might be why your PC won't start today
Did you update your free copy of AVG 2011 today, in the hopes of evading a nasty bug? In a set of mildly familiar circumstances, the antivirus company has inadvertently unleashed an even nastier one. iFlash adds a flash to your iPhone or iPod touch
Of course, it kind of takes away from the idea that a mobile phone should be sleek and easy to carry, but I'm guessing that is beside the point. The iFlash is a self-powered flash module that plugs directly into the docking port of your iPhone 3G/3GS or iPod touch and allows owners to take pictures in badly lit areas. It will also work with your iPhone 4 but there's not a lot of point in having two flashes, especially since the extra one hangs off your otherwise thin and lightweight iPhone. Rock Band Reloaded arrives on App Store for iOS devices
EA Mobile has announced that Rock Band Reloaded is now available on the App Store, with a download for the iPhone or iPod touch and an HD version specifically for the iPad. The game includes new content from artists such as Nirvana, Billy Idol, No Doubt, Nine Inch Nails, and Vampire Weekend. New tracks are also promised to be added throughout the holidays.

Polaroid teases likely instant print camera launch at CES
Polaroid today sent out invitations to Electronista and other members of the press to attend a special event at CES in January with a teaser of a device to come. Only referring to it as "grey revealed," it shows a dimmed image of what's likely to be an updated instant camera. Little else is known beyond its possibly combining a digital camera with a printer.

Apple experimenting with "radial" menu design
A recent patent application by Apple brought to light by UnwiredView shows the company doing further research into the concept of pop-up menus in a radial arrangement, a concept that could expand user options while still manageable by simple gestures. The new "radial" menus follow on from an earlier patent exploring the use of "spiraling" menus to expand options or level of detail.

The Incident updated to use iPad TV out, iPhone as remote
Big Bucket Software on Thursday unveiled a promised update to The Incident ($2, App Store) that adds a unique TV gaming feature. Those with both an iPad and either an iPhone or iPod touch can play the game on a TV using the iPad's TV out support. Acting as a makeshift game console, the iPad hosts the game while the smaller handheld serves as the gamepad.
