Tweetie 2.1 goes live with geolocation

iPhone developer atebits on Sunday signaled the formal launch of Tweetie 2.1 ($2.99, App Store). The update gives the client support multiple features that Twitter itself has added to its microblogging service, including the geolocation feature that now gives all Twitter users the option of marking each tweet with its position. It also acknowledges Twitter's new user lists and the native retweet format.

Apple testing iPhone 3,1, hiring for Maps overhaul

Apple this weekend has tipped its hand early and provided clues as to its future iPhone upgrades. Pandav, the developer of the iPhone train tracker app iBART, reports seeing the previously leaked iPhone 3,1 hardware ID showing up in logs identifying those using the software. The previously unreleased device has been seen as early as the March beta of iPhone OS 3.0 but now appears to be in live testing online, keeping in step with Apple's past practices of testing iPhones' Internet usage several months ahead of release.

Nokia N900 glitch leads to useful portrait mode, caught on video

File this under "it's not a bug, it's a feature" if true. According to Guyver at the maemo.org forums, some glitch in the OS caused his Nokia N900 to switch into portrait mode for everything, not just dialer and photo apps as previously allowed. We'd love to eliminate the need for two hands to run our favorite chunks of mobile software, but so far we haven't been able to recreate his trick. Try it at home if you'd like by tilting the device to launch the phone app, then sliding up the screen and closing the app. Perhaps the gang at Espoo can turn this into a legit update -- if they're awesome people, of course. Intel's desktop roadmap leaked, with faster i5 and i7, introduction of i3

Just when you thought you had enough gigahertz in your life, along come the folks at Impress to blow the doors off Intel's upcoming crop of desktop processors. In the highly detailed charts there's wild talk of a low-powered "S" version of Core i5 that lowers the chip from 95W to 82W, a new Core i3 line that strips out the Turbo Boost technology and dips into budget-priced territory, and word that at the time of this roadmap at least the Core i9 "Gulftown" chip isn't slated for until Q2 of next year. CatGenie: die Katze wäscht sich selbst - die Katzentoilette auch

Filed under: Haushaltstechnik Schon wieder ein Gerät für faule Katzenbesitzer: eine selbstreinigende Katzentoilette mit dem bescheidenen Namen CatGenie. Chemikalien müssen nachgefüllt werden, die Streu aber ist waschbar und wird einfach ausgespült. Angeblich eine superhygienische Sache, aber dass der Abwasserschlauch einfach über die Klobrille gehängt wird, finden wir nicht wirklich genial. Scratch Shield: selbstheilender Nissan-Lack jetzt auch für Handys

Filed under: Handys Nissan benutzt bei einigen seiner Automodelle einen Lack mit der Fähigkeit zur Selbstreparatur. Kleinere Kratzer verschwinden nach einiger Zeit von alleine wieder aus den hochelastischen Kunstharzen, wie in den Bildern oben zu sehen ist. Nun hat Nissan dem japanischen Handyhersteller NTT DoCoMo erlaubt, den Speziallack für seine Phones zu nutzen. Gute Idee, bleibt zu hoffen, dass bald auch Geräte anderer Firmen von ihr profitieren werden.

iPhone "3,1" moniker denotes major hardware change (PA Semi?) en route

Today we learned that new iPhones were found using apps with tracking software in the San Francisco area.  The news is not surprising since the same thing has happened around this time of year for the past few years.  This is the traditional time that Apple starts testing new iPhone hardware for release in summer. What is interesting about today's information is that the new iPhone hardware is denoted as 3,1. Archos 5 gets Android Market, Gmail and Maps for that Google-blessed experience

Since it's not a phone and transgresses in all sorts of other Google-pleasing areas, the Archos 5 Internet Tablet hasn't had a full shot at Android thus far, being relegated to merely the open source aspects of the OS. However, with phones like the Droid out and about and making high-resolution compatibility a must for Android developers, not to mention some diligent work from the hacking community, there are now downloadable versions of Android Market, Gmail, Maps and some other Google-specific Android goodies for the Archos 5. Use them at your own risk, of course, but it's not like the Archos 5 is a testament to stability in its current incarnation anyway.

Zune HD getting magenta and purple flavors on December 1st

Not enough variety in your Zune HD color palette? How about a friendly dab of magenta and purple to mix up the proceedings?
