Facebook users can now share via Android and iOS apps
Yesterday, Facebook revealed that it was in the process of bringing its website's share feature to mobile apps for iOS and Android. Well, Zuckerberg's crew just made good on its promise, and has released version 5.2 of its app for both platforms. That means that folks using either app can now pass on their witty musings and puppy pictures to all of their online friends with a simple tap in their news feeds. Want in on the action? Firefox browser add-on lets us try Firefox OS in an all-Mozilla universe
We've had the chance to experiment with early versions of Firefox OS for awhile -- just not in Firefox the browser, where you'd nearly expect it to have shown first. Scrabble board packs RFID technology, broadcasts tournaments online in real-time, costs 20,000 pounds
Used to be, the Scrabble app was the techiest way to play the venerable vocabulary game, but the folks at Mind Sports have given the analog version some serious geek cred. Dell reports Q3 earnings: $13.7 billion in revenue, net income drops 47% year-over-year
Dell's revenues and profits continued to shrink in Q3 of 2013. While the manufacturer did manage to rake in revenues of $13.7 billion, that marks a significant drop from Q2's $14.5 billion and the $15.5 billion it pulled in over the same period last year. Even profits took a sharp downturn, with only $475 million of the money coming in boosting the bottom line. Survey: 42% of PC upgraders plan to buy Mac, iPad instead
A survey conducted by Avast has found that immediate interest in Windows 8 may be weak, and nearly half of the upgrade-ready respondents are eyeing a Mac or iPad rather than another PC. The survey, which was referenced by USA Today, polled 135,000 Windows users last month ahead of the Windows 8 launch. Only nine percent indicated that Windows 8 has hastened their plans to upgrade, and more than 74 percent still have no immediate plans to upgrade.

Briefly: DEVONagent updates, iLuv Lightning charging cables
DEVONagent, a search tool that lets users create custom web searches, has been updated with a number of improved default search sets, plug-ins, and scanners. The Pro version has also received the option to perform alternate searches with common search engines, and then download and analyze any results. The Nintendo Wii finally gets a YouTube app, now available in the US
Nintendo confirmed this summer that the Wii U would offer a YouTube app in addition to a number of other streaming video options, but it didn't have any news for existing Wii users at the time. That's now changed, though, with Google announcing today that it's finally made a YouTube app available for the original Wii after all these years. Evernote 5 for Mac exits beta, is now live in the Mac App Store
Back at the beginning of the month, when Evernote 5 for Mac launched in beta, the app's creators warned users that they could suffer data corruption, data loss and other such indignities if they tried out the unfinished software. Flipboard adds support for Apple's iBookstore
The developers of Flipboard, the magazine-style feed reader for the iPad, have announced integration with Apple's iBookstore. The new "Books" category lets customers browse a book's title, image and description. If you find one you like, there's a link to buy in from Apple right in the app.
All of the categories currently in the iBookstore are available for perusal in Flipboard. Users in U.S., U.K., Canada, Australia, France, Italy, Spain, Germany, The Netherlands and Brazil will find this feature available today.

Trial begins for Chinese iPad, iPhone smugglers
A trial has started this week in southern China to determine the fate of a smuggling ring that brought as many as 160,000 Apple devices worth about US$80 million into the country.
Sting operations were able to catch five different smuggling rings and 104 suspects. The trial this week, which is being held in the Shenzhen Intermediate People's Court, deals with only 25 of the suspects.
Apple products are much cheaper outside of mainland China, so smugglers were buying the devices elsewhere and then bringing them into the country for sale on Alibaba's Taobao online marketplace. Electronista reports that the ring was selling up to 20,000

Microsoft updates Office 2011 and 2008 with a host of Outlook and other fixes
If you haven't seen it already, sometime in the next few days you'll get a software update for Microsoft Office for Mac 2008 and 2011.
The update has security patches that Microsoft deems 'critical' and improvements to Outlook. The update requires a Mac running OS X 10.5.8 or later. Some Macs will need multiple updates because this is not a single patch.
Here are the details of the updates:
This update fixes an issue in which automatic configuration did not work correctly for Outlook.com accounts.
This update addresses an issue when importing data from a PST file. If an email message in the PST file contains inline images followed by attachments (in that order), the attachments will be missing from the message after it is imported in Outlook for Mac.

JFK Airport: Diebe klauen 3.500 iPad mini im Wert von 1,5 Mio. Dollar
Scheinbar wollte sich dieses Duo nicht mit den langen Wartezeiten für das iPad mini abfinden. In einer Lagerhalle im JFK Airport in New York konnten zwei Diebe in der Nacht zum Dienstag mehr als 3.500 iPad mini auf zwei großen Paletten klauen. Gesamtwert der Ware: 1,5 Mio. Dollar (ca. 1,18 Mio. Euro). Scheinbar waren die Diebe mit einem eigenen Gabelstapler unterwegs und hinterließen drei weitere Paletten, als sie auf frischer Tat von einem Flughafenmitarbeiter entdeckt wurden und unerkannt die Flucht ergriffen, so die New York Post. OS X Launchpad bug is annoying, pretty
Tyler Lee over at Ubergizmo pointed out an interesting OS X bug that affects the way that the Launchpad window is displayed. It's an annoying bug, but strangely enough it's also quite beautiful.
The bug doesn't apply the blur effect when Launchpad is opened -- instead, it applies the crystallize effect which gives your app icons a nice "stained glass" appearance. It doesn't last for long, and the bug apparently isn't hitting many Macs. But it is kinda cool.

Thieves steal 3,600 iPad minis from JFK airport
Those new iPad minis are popular -- everybody wants them. In fact, two thieves wanted them so badly that they stole 3,600 of the little tablets in a well-organized heist at New York's JFK airport.
The pair showed up at a cargo building at the airport around midnight on Monday, November 12 and used a forklift from the facility to load two pallets loaded with US$1.5 million worth of iPad minis into a white tractor trailer truck marked with CEVA on the side. According to an exclusive report in the NY Post, the crooks would have probably made off with three more pallets, but were "challenged by an airport worker returning from dinner."

Am Flughafen JFK in New York wurden nach Angaben der New York Post Montag Nacht zwei Paletten mit iPad mini gestohlen. Die Diebe konnten unerkannt entkommen und von der Beute im Gesamtwert von 1,5 Millionen US-Dollar ist bislang ebenfalls keine Spur. Trial begins for major Chinese electronics smuggling ring
A trial has begun this week in southern China for a smuggling ring alleged to have brought in as many as 160,000 devices, including iPhones and iPads. The goods are said to have been worth as much as RMB 500 million (about $80 million US), and resulted in the loss of about RMB 55 million ($8.7 million) in taxes. Before their arrest the group sold products through Alibaba's Taobao online marketplace, and at one point were estimated to be selling up to 20,000 Apple items per month.

Apple to pay $2.5 billion dividend to shareholders today
Later today, Apple will pay a dividend to its shareholders for the second time in 17 years. You'll remember Apple announced its intention to pay a dividend "sometime in the 4th quarter of fiscal year 2012" last March.
The company stated it will pay its shareholders a US$2.65 per share dividend. Apple is expected to distribute just about $2.5 billion from its 935 million outstanding shares. That's enough to swim through a room full of gold coins.
Meanwhile, Apple continues to earn cash at an alarming rate. Congratulations to Apple and its shareholders.

Forscher sichten einsamen Planeten (Video)

New iMacs rumored to be delayed until next year
A rumor from French website MacBidouille claims Apple's new iMac models won't start shipping until early 2013. Apple has allegedly run into manufacturing problems with the all-in-one Mac and won't meet its target shipping dates of November for the 21-inch model and December for the 27-inch model.

JBL first to release iOS docks with new Lightning connector
JBL has revealed its first speaker docks with native support for Appleís latest propietary Lightning connector. Voyager Mobile promises free global roaming with 'patent-pending' technology
Voyager Mobile has launched a new "worldwide" wireless service called Project Global Voyager, saying users on the plan "won't pay a penny of roaming charges." The brash new MVNO has only vaguely described how it works, saying that the technology is "completely network cloud based, with no special software residing on the individual handsets and devices." Though it hasn't revealed pricing yet, Voyager says the service will be available to businesses and consumers starting in 2013. Apple to dispense $2.5B to shareholders in dividends today
For most companies, a payout of $2.5 billion dollars (working out to $2.65 per share for each of its 935 million outstanding shares) would be manna from heaven, but for Apple the significant dividend being distributed today -- only the second such payment in the last 17 years -- doesn't even begin to match its ability to generate revenue or add to its cash stockpile. Over the course of fiscal 2013, the company will spend an additional $7.5 billion in dividends, but is likely to finish the year -- or indeed, this quarter -- with more than that amount added to its cash balance.

Apples Ax-Chips: Keine Preiserhöhungen durch Samsung
Vor einigen Tagen gab es Berichte, dass Samsung angeblich die Preise für die Produktion von Apples Ax-Chips um 20 Prozent erhöhen wolle. Die Südkoreaner bestreiten diese Berichte nun jedoch.

Fehler in iOS 6 sorgt für wiederkehrende Downloads und hohe Datenmengen
Seit einiger Zeit beschweren sich Nutzer von iOS 6 darüber, dass sie mit ihren Smartphones immer häufiger die monatlichen Datenlimits ihrer Provider erreichen. Schuld ist anscheinend ein Fehler im AV-Foundation-Framework, der dafür sorgt, dass Podcasts und andere Audio-Streams immer wieder geladen werden.
“Sie surfen jetzt mit gedrosselter Geschwindigkeit”. Was bei deutschen Providern häufig nur für eine Drosselung der Geschwindigkeit sorgt, kann bei ausländischen Providern schnell teuer werden. Dort zahlt man für die überhöhte Datenmenge nicht selten ein kleines Vermögen. Besonders schlimm ist die Angelegenheit, wenn man selbst gar keine Ahnung hat, woher das Problem kommt und es somit auch nicht stoppen kann.

Bug in iOS 6.0 ID'd as culprit in data issue, already fixed
Users of iOS devices who haven't upgraded from iOS 6.0 to the latest version have another good reason to do so: a bug that was causing previously-unidentified data overages and other issues has been identified, in which an iOS device on iOS 6.0 may re-download media streams over and over, perhaps even while on 3G or LTE connections. The issue, which was fixed in iOS 6.0.1, could conceivably cause users to incur data overage charges. At present, Apple has not claimed responsibility for the bug or any resulting charges.

Gerücht: Neue iMacs kommen erst 2013

Apple to developers: remove 'memory' from app titles
A report on gaming news site Gamasutra claims that Apple is warning developers of iOS games that German game maker Ravensburger owns the trademark for the word "memory" in association with a game title in 42 countries, and unless they change the app name, it will be removed from the App Store. The company does not own the title in the United States, but it seems that the ban is universal, and will be enforced before the end of the year worldwide, according to sources MacNN spoke to familiar with the matter.

Scosche rolls out new Lightning chargers for home and car
Scosche Industries today became the first accessory manufacturer to show off 5W and 12W wall and car chargers compatible with Apple's Lightning adapter standard. Punch Quest now costs a dollar, Bastion is universal
Here's two big updates to really great games on iOS. First, Punch Quest (which is one of my favorite iOS games this year so far) started out as a freemium title, given away for free with a number of in-app purchases to support it financially. But developers Rocketcat Games have said in the past that the in-app purchases just aren't making enough money to continue development, so they've taken the hazardous step of raising the app's price to 99 cents. Punch Quest is a terrific title that's well worth a buck or more, so hopefully it'll do better for the devs at the higher price.

Samsung denies rumor of increased cost of chip production
Word's been going around that due to the recent friction between Apple and Samsung on the end product front, Samsung has decided to charge Apple even more for another one of its businesses: The chip assembly line. Square reaches $10 billion in payments per year, stays ahead of a growing pack

Rumor: new iMacs to be delayed due to production issues?
A rumor from French Mac enthusiast site MacBidouille has insisted that on top of Apple's previous warning that the new iMac model announced last month would see "significant shortages," manufacturing difficulties may push the debut of the thinner, optical drive-less iMac models into 2013. Dropbox hits 100 million users, looking for great Dropbox stories
Dropbox has announced that it has reached 100 million users, an impressive number to be sure. For comparison's sake, here's Wikipedia's list of virtual communities with more than 100 million users, which currently has seven companies on it, so Dropbox has just joined a very exclusive club. Adobe support site hacked; 150,000 users' information stolen
Adobe Systems has shuttered a customer information sharing website temporarily after being informed that it was compromised by hackers. News of the intrusion surfaced late Tuesday, when a hacker claiming to be from Egypt claimed the hack and proved it by releasing 644 records from the site, including emails, saying that the release was done to prove that Adobe is slow in fixing security issues with sites and products it releases.

When I departed for my three-week honeymoon, I informed all my colleagues that I would be off the grid: unavailable, unreachable, without access, etc. In truth, I was in airplane mode scanning for WiFi networks several times a day, checking in on East Coast friends dealing with Hurricane Sandy.
