iPhone appealing as BYOD smartphone thanks to security warning
When it comes to mobile devices in enterprises, Apple's iOS platform leads the way. But according to an opinion post by Computerworld's Jonny Evans, iOS may become even more dominant in enterprise computing thanks to a security warning about Android devices that came from the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), a Federal task force that includes the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the National White Collar Crime Center and the Bureau of Justice Assistance.
That security scare, dealing with Android malware, isn't the only reason why corporate IT departments are welcoming iPhones into companies as "bring your own device" (or BYOD) equipment. As

IBM mit gemischten Quartalszahlen
Parallel zu Intel hat IBM als weiteres Schwergewicht der IT-Branche am Dienstagabend nach Börsenschluss die Quartalszahlen für den zurückgelegten Dreimonatszeitraum bekanntgegeben. Demnach steht ein Umsatzrückgang auf 24,747 Milliarden US-Dollar bei quasi gleichem Gewinn von 3,824 Mrd. US-Dollar in den Büchern.

The iPod touch doesn't have a light sensor because it's 'too thin'
Kevin Tofel over at GigaOm stepped into the sunlight this past week (a dangerous endeavor for any blogger, let me tell you), and found out something strange about his new iPod touch: It doesn't have an autobrightness function. That's because it doesn't have a light sensor at all, apparently: There's only a manual setting for the brightness, and when Tofel went to Apple's product page for the new iPod touch, he confirmed that there's no light sensor listed in the various features of the device. While older iPod touch models do have the light sensor function, this current model apparently does not.

Uber shuts down New York City taxi beta, may see light at the end of the (Lincoln) tunnel in February
Uber has been having a tough time getting a foothold in New York City, and it's temporarily withdrawing the UberTaxi service it had in beta. The withdrawal isn't entirely for the reasons you'd expect, however. While Uber claims to have been getting grief from the city's Taxi and Limousine Commission for offering a competing (if technically legal) service through its smartphone apps, the program's end was due to demand rather than any kind of outright ban -- the Commission's pressure reportedly kept Uber from matching interest with enough yellow cabs. Report: Panasonic to cease TV sales, pursue iPad contract
Panasonic is reportedly preparing to cease television production and revamp its manufacturing efforts for smaller displays sold to third parties. Photographer Sabine Liewald sues Apple over copyright infringement
No stranger to copyright litigation, Apple will play the defensive role in a suit by photographer Sabine Liewald who alleges the company used a piece of her work without permission. According to details obtained by Patently Apple, the company contacted Liewald's agency, Factory Downtown, and requested a high-resolution version of a photograph titled Eye Closeup strictly for internal layout purposes.
The photograph subsequently popped up on marketing materials for Apple's Retina-equipped MacBook Pro -- as seen above in the court document obtained

Intel reports Q3 earnings, revenue holds steady at $13.5 billion
Hot off the heels of a slightly disappointing Q2, mega chip-maker Intel's Q3 results are in. Good old Chipzilla managed to wrangle $13.5 billion in revenues with a net profit of $3 billion. While Intel's latest figures reflect a small improvement from its last quarterly earnings, the company is still taking a light dip year over year. Swiss clock licensee 'surprised' that Apple can use clock design
Earlier this week, Apple secured a license from the Swiss Railway to use its iconic Swiss Clock on the iPad. This agreement was lauded by the SBB, but it wasn't so favorably received by Swiss watch maker Mondaine, according to a report in MacWorld UK. NPD study finds average display sizes continuing to rise in all areas but laptops and tablets
Not exactly a huge surprise here, but a new study out from NPD DisplaySearch today has confirmed that the trend towards larger screens in continuing at a steady pace in all but a few key areas. The big exception is "mobile PCs," which NPD defines as laptops and tablets for its purposes. That area dropped from a 13.6-inch average in 2010 to 12.1-inch in 2012 (with an ever so slight increase to 12.2-inches projected for 2013), a drop that represents a ten percent decrease overall and is largely attributed to the growth of tablets . Schiller e-mail: iPod touch "too thin" for light sensor
Apple's senior vice president of worldwide marketing, Phil Schiller, has reportedly responded to a customer inquiry regarding the lack of an ambient light sensor in the fifth-generation iPod touch. Surprised by the lack of auto-brightness setting for the new Touch, Raghid Harake asked for further explanation. Schiller allegedly replied, noting that the fifth-generation devices lacks an ambient light sensor and explaining that "it's just too thin!"

Apple is full of incredibly clever people who not only develop the devices that we know and love, but some who also have amazing tricks up their sleeves for making sure that Apple websites are viewable on a variety of devices. @dbloom posted a website teardown focusing on the Design page of Apple's iPhone 5 site, finding some programming trickery was used to mimic video without having to actually embed video.

Naan Studio discontinues work on Echofon for Mac
Naan Studio's Kazuho Okui announced in a blog post that it will stop development on its desktop version of Echofon so it can focus on its mobile apps. The company will stop selling its desktop Twitter client soon and will end support in November. There are no planned updates to the app. Customers who have Echofon installed on their Mac can continue to use the software as it will "function normally in the immediate future."

Foxconn admits hiring underage interns
Foxconn released a statement on Tuesday confirming it violated Chinese labor laws by illegally hiring underage workers at its Yantai plant in Shandong Province. Several workers as young as 14-years-old were discovered as part of an internal investigation, says a report in CNET.

Where do most iPhone accidents happen?
The most common place to destroy an iPhone is not in your car or even the bathroom. According to a survey from Squaretrade, most fatal iPhone accidents (21 percent) happen in the kitchen, with the living room (18 percent) and bathroom (16 percent) following closely behind. Surprisingly, only 9 percent of damaged phones went for a swim in the toilet.
The majority of accidents (69 percent) are caused by the owner and happen inside the home (51 percent). The survey also showed that water is the leader when it comes to liquid damage, with soda, beer and coffee/tea rounding out the list. Have you killed an iPhone? Foxconn admits child labor laws breached by use of underage interns
Foxconn has admitted that it employed underage interns in breach of China's child labor laws. An internal investigation at its Yantai factory found some of the young trainees were aged 14- and 15-years old (16 being the legal minimum). Mann will im Hamsterrad über die Irische See laufen, scheitert auf halber Strecke (Video)

Ein Pontonboot mit Hamsterradantrieb nennt sich offensichtlich "Tredalo" und mit so einem Gefährt kann man tatsächlich ordentliche Strecken übers Wasser laufen - wieder was gelernt. Beim Versuch mit dem Tredalo die Irische See zu überqueren, scheiterte der 35-jährige Chris Todd allerdings neulich, denn nach 42 von 106 Kilometern wurde er durch widrige Winde und Probleme mit der Ruderanlage gezwungen, den Versuch abzubrechen. Und während sich der Hamsterrädler in ein Beiboot retten konnte, soff sein Gefährt gnadenlos ab und auf den Meeresgrund. Video nach dem Break.

Wenn man ein (kolportiertes) Werbebudget von 1,8 Milliarden Dollar hat, kann man ja wohl erstmal ein bisschen Stimmung in der Zielgruppe machen, um die uncoolen Specs geht es schließlich später noch zu genüge - so dürfte grob gesagt die Kalkulation zu Microsofts erstem TV-Spot für seine Surface-Tablets lauten. In dem Video gibt es jedenfalls viel junges Gemüse, das altersgerechtes Gehopse aufführt, das der Justin-Bieber-erprobte Regisseur mit Gags wie knutschenden Rentnern und Tablet-Claps garniert. Am Ende wird dann noch auf den 26. Oktober verwiesen (was da wohl passiert?) und ein Making-off des Tanzspots angedroht.

Adobe updates Android, iOS Reader, adds cloud storage
Adobe is just waiting on Apple's review process before releasing a new version of its Adobe (Acrobat) Reader app for iOS, and while waiting has also updated its Android version to add features that will match the iOS version. ZTE to report net loss due to third-quarter slump, share price drops

Though the iOS-inspired Reminders app was a significant new feature of Mountain Lion, one of its abilities has been overlooked by most users -- a feature that lets users share reminders with other users. Until today, the feature was exclusive to Mountain Lion, and curiously absent in iOS 6. Apple has now added the shared reminders ability to the online iCloud.com version of Reminders, foreshadowing its likely addition to iOS 6 in a forthcoming update. Third Beijing Apple Store to open October 20
Apple's third retail store in Beijing, China will open at 9AM local time this Saturday, October 20. The store will be located on Wangfujing Street, a pedestrian mall of over 200 shops that has had a retail emphasis for over 800 years and is considered a major shopping destination for both locals and tourists. Cut Me In is a new iOS app that simulates the Photoshop lasso tool and the eraser tool.
You can choose a background from those provided or use something that is already on your camera roll. Bring up a picture, then use your finger to trace around an object and the image will be dropped in front the background photo. Chances are you won't be perfectly accurate with your selection, so there are different erasers you can use to clean up unwanted pixels. Endless runners are one of the most-used genres on the App Store lately -- from the original Canabalt to later hits such as Jetpack Joyride and one of my current favorites, God of Blades. Dave Taylor's "Learning Unix for OS X Mountain Lion" offers an in-depth tutorial for OS X power users who have not yet mastered Unix. Written for technically competent readers, it focuses on introducing common command-line tasks.
The book starts with Terminal, and then moves on to the basic forms of Unix commands. In just about 200 pages, it surveys common file tasks, application launching and even X11.
There are a lot of useful nuggets of information to be found. The tone overall is a bit dry, and I was rather hoping for more motivation on topics. That said, the author has done a good job in surveying Unix.

Study: Americans overpaying for LTE
American wireless customers are paying significantly more for LTE service than are their counterparts in Europe. This according to a new study from the research arm of the GSM Association, which represents mobile operators. Now version 3, released today, has added bi-directional integration with iOS reminders and a feature that allows you to add geotagged reminders for any location you find in the app. Localscope can remind you with an alert if your are near a location. Google has been testing an expanded search that includes Gmail results ever since August, and it's been enough of a hit that the company is swinging for the fences with an expanded test. TD Bank backup tapes lost: 260,000 customers exposed
Cherry Hill, NJ based TD Bank has reported to the Attorneys General of 11 states that 260,000 customers may be affected by a data breach. Unencrypted backup tapes including names, address, date of birth, driver's license number, account information, and Social Security numbers were "misplaced" by the bank during a transport in March.

iMac-Modelle ab 2009: 1 TB Seagate Festplatten werden von Apple ausgetauscht

Passbook: Auch bald in Apple Stores in den USA einsetzbar
Apples neue App Passbook ist in Deutschland bzw. Europa noch nicht hinreichend adaptiert. Außer der Lufthansa gibt es noch keine europäische Airline, die das Einchecken mit Passbook ermöglicht. Auch auf Seite des Einzelhandels und der Gastronomie sieht es noch eher mau aus. In den USA ist es ein wenig besser, aber auch noch nicht perfekt.

Tweetdeck updated with themes and new fonts
Twitter clients are like political candidates these days -- everyone's got one they like, and no one really wants to hear about the ones they don't. For me, TweetDeck is still my client of choice. Even though I've heard good things about TweetBot for Mac and a few other options out there, nothing newer has caught my eye. That's why I'm glad to hear that TweetDeck just got updated, and my client of choice has a few new tricks to it.
