T-Mobile improves coverage, iPhone speeds in three areas
T-Mobile announced today that it was activating its 4G HSPA+ network in three major metropolitan areas with the goal of improving coverage and getting faster speeds for owners of unlocked iPhones. T-Mobile customers in Washington D.C. and surrounding areas, Baltimore, and Houston will now reportedly see a significant boost on T-Mobile's network. T-Mobile's internal testing reportedly showed a 70 percent download speed boost for the iPhone 4S on T-Mobile's network over AT&T's network.

Nintendo Wii U vs. Nintendo Wii ... fight!
The first thing we noticed about Nintendo's next console when we last got our hands on it was the length -- the Wii U is Nintendo's longest console yet. Sure, sure, there's a tablet controller and HD graphics and yadda yadda yadda. That's immaterial. What matters here, folks, is how the new hardware -- the console itself -- physically stacks up against the first Wii. Samsung plant may be delayed because of lost Apple orders
Samsung is "likely" to postpone building a new semiconductor plant in Hwaseong, South Korea because of Apple, according to DigiTimes. The facility, known as Line-17, was originally expected to start volume production in the first quarter of 2014, but DigiTimes suggests that Samsung may be worried about losing some of its orders for Apple processors. Sources tell the website that Samsung will no longer be the only manufacturer of the A-series chips used in iPhones and iPads; currently these are produced at a Samsung plant in Austin, Texas.

To migrate or not to migrate: that is the upgrade question
Face it, a simple migration saves you lots of work. Apple's Migration Assistant transfers information when you set up your new Mac, letting you retain all your preferences and passwords on your new system. You pick up one one machine where you left off on another.
So why do so many of us here at TUAW manually set up our computers? It's all about cruft, that stuff that builds up over time. Cruft includes apps you no longer use, preferences you don't really remember setting, bits and pieces scattered around your system that accumulate with use.

TweetBot for Mac updated to 1.01, adds support for Reading List and j/k navigation
TweetBot for Mac has been updated with just a .01 version, but the update still adds in some pretty powerful functionality. First of all, the update makes TweetBot compatible with Apple's Reading List service, so you can now add content to your Safari Reading List directly from the Twitter client.
There are a number of improvement fixes as well, and finally, TweetBot has added in something called "j/k navigation," where you can use your j and k keys to head up or down your tweet list. Briefly: SwitchEasy launches CoverBuddy, HDR for GoPro
SwitchEasy has launched a new iPad mini case designed to be used alongside Apple's Smart Cover. The CoverBuddy is a plastic back shell that provides protection for the entire back of the tablet. Two color options, UltraClear and UltraBlack, are available online for $20 a piece. Apple Internet head Eddy Cue joins Ferrari directors
The head of Internet software and services at Apple, Eddy Cue, has taken a position on Ferrari's board of directors, according to an announcement. "I am delighted that Eddy Cue, one of the main driving forces behind Appleís range of revolutionary products, has now joined our board," reads a statement from Ferrari chairman Luca di Montezemolo. First Looks: Cygnett Enigma for iPad mini
The origami-style folding cover found on Cygnett's Enigma ($40) isn't novel -- we've seen it on full-sized iPad cases before -- but it is the first one we've come across for the iPad mini. First Looks: Cygnett FlexiGel for iPad mini
Cygnett's FlexiGel ($20) is, surprisingly, the first plain rubber skin we've been sent for the iPad mini. Available in black or blue, it easily and tightly wraps around the body of the tablet. The glossy exterior has button coverage and cutouts for the ports, including one superfluous opening on the back directly below the microphone that may indicate that Cygnett assumed that there would be an extra port in the iPad mini that didn't actually materialize.

Prizmo is a powerful OS X scanning app
Prizmo 2 is a scanning application with Optical Character Recognition (OCR) and several unique features that will attract those who do moderate scanning. Additional options are available from the Pro-pack via in-app purchase. Prizmo 2 is currently available from the App Store for US$24.99, which is a limited half-price sale.
Prizmo recognizes most scanners, and also works with digital images and PDF files.
To get started, select New from the File Menu, then drag-and-drop your file onto a target. If you have a scanner, you can initiate a scan on that hardware. Press the recognize button and you are on your way.

Canon announced today that it would be releasing a new ultra-long focus zoom lens, the RS-IL04UL, which would be compatible with Canon's RealiS Professional A/V series projectors. The new lens will give users the flexibility of placing professional A/V systems anywhere from 15 to 290 feet away from a desired projection area. The RS-IL04UL is optimized for 60" to 600" screens, and is best suited for larger venues. It has a suggested list price of $3499, and it should be available at the end of November.

A pair of USB 2.0 hubs arrived at TUAW Central today for testing and review. If you're thinking that I may have mistyped USB 3.0, unfortunately I didn't -- for some reason, Mac accessory manufacturers seem to forget that new Macs are equipped with the faster USB 3.0 ports.

DC Comics brings a veritable justice league of titles to Kindle, iBooks and Nook Stores
Not that there's been any lack of ways to get Batman or Supes on your chosen tablet, between Comixology and the devoted DC app, but if you happened to need on more, the publisher announced today that it will be bringing its entire line to three prominent e-bookstores. Ericsson will 1.550 Mitarbeiter entlassen

Apple wins patent on 'ornamental' iPad design
The US Patent and Trademark Office has awarded Apple another patent for the iPad's "ornamental" design, ArsTechnica notes. Patent D607,286 appears to focus on the iPad's rounded, rectangular frame, using a diagram in which the subject design is highlighted with an unbroken line. The examiner quotes a number of previous devices in her research, such as photo frames and early HP tablets, and also compares against features which aren't immediately relevant to the patent, such as the placement of cameras and Home buttons on the iPad versus Samsung Galaxy tablets.

Next Apple vs. Motorola court battle scheduled for October 2013
According to a report in FOSS Patents, Apple and Motorola are scheduled to meet again in a Southern California court in late 2013. The court released a timeline that includes a May 21, 2013 discovery deadline and a pretrial motion deadline of June 28, 2013. Moderated settlement talks are slated for July 15, 2013, and the case will have its final pretrial conference on October 18, 2013. The trial should begin shortly after this last pretrial meeting.
FOSS Patents calls the case an "antisuit lawsuit" that aims to prevent Motorola from pursuing further litigation against Apple products that include a Qualcomm baseband chip. You can read more about the background details of the case

Sprint pays $480M for spectrum, customers from US Cellular
Sprint has announced plans to pay $480 million for customers and PCS spectrum from regional carrier US Cellular. Should the deal be approved by the Department of Justice and the Federal Communications Commission, by sometime in 2013, Sprint will take over customers and spectrum in parts of Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Missouri, and Ohio, including the major markets of Chicago and St. Louis. AT&T pledges $14 billion to build out networks over 3 years
Despite an FCC-imposed $700,000 fine just yesterday, AT&T has just detailed plans to invest $14 billion over the next three years to build out its wireless 4G LTE and wireline broadband networks and bring them to more of the population. The carrier promises 250 million US residents will have access to its high-speed mobile broadband offering by the end of 2013, growing to 300 million by the end of 2014. The investment plan is being called Project Velocity IP (VIP), and also includes wireline investment.

Das Amokdisplay: 2560 x 1600 Pixeln auf 7 Zoll
Der Drang nach der höchstmöglichen Auflösung scheint kein Ende zu finden. Man kann vom iPhone halten was man will, dass Display ist unbestreitbar gut, was nicht zuletzt an der hohen Pixeldichte von 326 ppi liegt. Einzelne Pixel sind schon dort nicht mehr zu entdecken. Aber es muss wohl noch mehr sein, wie ein neues Display von Japan Display Inc. zeigt.
Eine Auflösung von 2560 x 1600 Pixeln auf 7 Zoll, muss das sein? Die einzelnen Pixel erkennt das menschliche Auge ja schon jetzt nicht mehr bei den hochauflösenden Displays in Smartphones und Tablets (na gut, wenn man bei größeren Tablets ganz genau hinschaut, kann man aus nächster Nähe vielleicht tatsächlich noch einzelne Pixel entdecken, aber kein normaler Nutzer w

The case, which is currently designed for the iPhone 4/4S, is a portable electrocardiogram (ECG). Egal wie sie nun genau heissen, in Microsofts Windows Store sind laut WinAppUpdate bereits 12895 Apps verfügbar. Verglichen mit dem Mac AppStore ist das vielleicht eher marginal, aber es geht ja auch gerade erst los und momentan 362 neue Apps pro Tag (kurz nach dem Launch waren es 500) sind durchaus auch kein Pappenstil, denn es bedeutet bei gleichbleibender Frequenz knapp 11.000 neue Apps pro Monat. Bis Weihnachten sollte Microsoft so also um die 30.000 Apps am Start haben, dann müssen sie nur noch für ausreichend Surface-Nachschub sorgen.

Foxconn chairman discusses struggle to build iPhone 5
Citing incredibly high demand for the iPhone 5 and quality control difficulties, Foxconn Chairman Terry Gou told Reuters that his company's Hon Hai Precision Industry unit is struggling to assemble enough of the devices to meet Apple's requirements for the latest iPhone.
Talking to reporters after a business forum, Gou said "It's not easy to make the iPhones. We are falling short of meeting the huge demand." Some brokerage firms have reported that another Foxconn Subsidiary, Foxconn International Holdings (FIH), is now beginning to build the units. Gou declined to comment. In November of last year, The Daily reported that Microsoft was working on a version of its Office suite of apps for the iPad. One year later and The Verge now claims to have information that confirms the Redmond company will release Office versions for Android and iOS in early 2013.

Apple must pay $368.2 million to VirnetX for infringing VPN patents for use in FaceTime, a federal jury in east Texas ruled. AT&T to spend $14 billion over the next three years on broadband, wireless infrastructure

David Gilmour concert to be released as iPhone, iPad app
Rather than stick to a DVD-only distribution for concerts, DVD authoring group The Pavement is turning to smartphone apps to reach a larger audience. The company is working with David Gilmour, formerly of Pink Floyd, who will become the first musician to release a concert as a smartphone app. The now solo artist is releasing a compilation of songs recorded during Robert Wyatt's 2001 and 2002 Meltdown Festival.

Pixar names building after Steve Jobs
Steve Jobs was critical to the early success of Pixar, and the animation company has honored that legacy by naming the studio's main building the Steve Jobs Building. A photo posted to Twitter by Pixar employee Junn Lee shows the building, which was designed by Jobs during his time at the company.
Jobs bought Pixar, then known as The Graphics Group, from Lucasfilm's computer graphics division in 1986. Sprint pays US Cellular $480 million for Midwest spectrum and customers
Sprint has cemented a deal with US Cellular to pick up its PCS spectrum and around 585,000 customers across the Midwest. The deal will land the newly-owned company 30MHz within the 1900 MHz band across Illinois, Indian, Michigan, Missouri and Ohio, with the carrier stating that it'll be putting the extra spectrum to use augmenting its coverage while it continues to roll out 4G. Apple vs. VirnetX: Millionenstrafe durch Patentverletzung in FaceTime

E-Book-Streit: Europäische Kommission soll Angebot durch Apple und Verleger annehmen wollen
Der Streit um E-Book-Preisabsprachen zwischen Apple und diversen Verlagen scheint zumindest in den USA kurz vor seinem Ende zu stehen. Die Europäische Kommission hat angedeutet, ein Angebot durch Apple und die Verlage anzunehmen, das es Amazon erlauben würde, E-Books günstiger anzubieten.
Bei dem Streit mit der Europäischen Kommission geht es um das so genannte Agenturmodell, auf das Apple im iBookstore setzt: Die Buchverlage legen vorab fest, zu welchen Preisen sie ihre Titel in Apples Download-Portal verkaufen wollen, Apple behält dann 30 Prozent des Umsatzes für sich. Hinzu kommt, dass sich Apple durch eine Klausel in den Verträgen mit den Verlagen garantieren lässt, dass sie ihre Bücher in anderen Portalen nicht günstiger verkaufen.

Amazon, Microsoft bring new titles to iOS
While it is not uncommon for companies that compete with Apple to release apps for its wildly successful iOS platform (for example, Google's many iOS apps), it was still something of an odd coincidence that two other would-be Apple rivals in the mobile space, particularly in the tablet segment -- Amazon and Microsoft -- both released new apps for iOS today. FCC mandates AT&T recompense forcibly migrated data users
Late Tuesday, the FCC announced that it is forcing AT&T to recompense customers who had been forced from a pay-as-you-go wireless data plan to a monthly contracted plan. The FCC reports that it has spent a year investigating consumer complaints, and that AT&T had applied the new monthly plan to customers who had moved or replaced devices under warranty or insurance.

Apple wants to add Jelly Bean, Galaxy Note 10.1 to Samsung lawsuit
When Apple won its patent case against Samsung back in August to the tune of a $1.05 billion payout, we knew it was just the beginning. Today in a San Jose, California courtroom, Apple asked Judge Lucy Koh to add Samsung's Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet and Google's Android 4.1 Jelly Bean mobile OS to the growing list of products it claims violate its patents.
The lawsuit at the center of this new case was originally brought against Apple by Samsung last month and is scheduled to go to trial in 2014. In it, Samsung is seeking to prove that the iPhone 5 actually violates some of its patents.

Microsoft partners with Devicescape to give WP8 users access to over 11 million WiFi hotspots
Microsoft has secured access to over 11 million WiFi hotspots for Windows Phone 8 users today by inking a deal with virtual network provider Devicescape. Hoping to help people avoid pesky data overages, this partnership uses Windows Phone 8's Data Sense feature to locate participating hotspots from Devicescape's group of pre-approved WiFi access points. When launched, the app pulls up a Bing-powered map displaying nearby hotspots and vets them based on their signal strengths.

Skype officially replacing Messenger, new version out now
When Skype 6.0 hit late last month, it introduced the ability to sign into the Microsoft-owned service using an existing Windows Live Messenger account (in addition to Facebook and Retina MacBook support). Asus announced yesterday the launch of two new additions to its line of Designo displays. Reuters: Apple, Amazon e-book battle in EU nearing a conclusion
Source have told Reuters that EU regulators are going to accept an offer by Apple and four publishers to end antitrust investigations into their e-book pricing schemes. This result essentially cedes a victory to Amazon, which will be able to sell online books for less than its competitors.
Apple, Simon & Schuster, Harper Collins, Hachette Livre, and Verlagsgruppe Georg von Holtzbrinck apparently made their proposal in September. They'll let retailers set their own prices and/or discounts for two years, and will suspend controversial "most-favored nations" clauses for five years. Opera announced an update today that brings new feature enhancements for both Windows and Mac users. The update to Opera 12.10 brings compatibility with the Retina displays seen on newer Mac notebooks, as well as basic touch support for Windows 8 devices. Apple uses a little code to help hide its Samsung apology in the UK
After the company's first attempt at its court-ordered apology came off a bit sarcastic -- and angered a UK judge in the process -- Apple has now posted its second attempt at the official statement on its UK website. However, while this new statement appears to have much less snark, the company has another treat in store: Apple's front page code has been tweaked so that the the blurb and link to the statement won't appear unless you scroll down, regardless of your screen resolution.

Google updates Chrome, brings better power management
Google today released the latest stable version of its Chrome browser, which improves on the browser's performance when rendering GPU-accelerated video. According to Google, the improvements in this version bring 25 percent better battery performance when GPU-accelerated video decoding is enabled. The update also gives users greater control over website permissions involving geolocation, pop-ups, and camera/microphone access.
