Windows 8 now available to try at Best Buy
Microsoft's already opened up the floodgates with Windows 8 pre-orders, and it looks as if those still on the fence now have a sandbox to goof off in. Pictured above is a trio of Windows 8 notebooks from a Best Buy located in St. Cloud, Minnesota, and we actually called around to confirm with several other stores that a similar setup had been erected in their locales. Nah, we can't make October 26th get here any faster, but at least you know where to head if you're looking for

Sprint bringing LTE to San Francisco and over 20 more cities 'in coming months'
We can't say we're exactly surprised Sprint would be bringing its 4G LTE waves to one of the biggest markets on the West Coast, but there's nothing like hearing it straight from the horse's carrier's mouth. Briefly: Kindle Lending coming to UK, France, Germany
Amazon has announced that the Kindle Owners' Lending Library will be launching in the UK, Germany, and France later this month. The lending service gives Amazon Prime members access to over 200,000 books that can be borrowed for free as frequently as one book per month, with no due dates. Any independent authors or publishers using Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) who enroll their books in KDP Select can be included in the in the UK, Germany and France libraries, as well as the existing US library.

Apple to open third Beijing Apple Store on iconic Wangfujing Street
Residents and visitors to China's capital, Beijing, will soon have a third Apple Store available for their shopping pleasure.
Chinese gadget site M.I.C. Gadget featured a group of photos today showing the construction site on Wangfujing Street in the Beijing City Center, less than a mile from Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City. The store is located on a corner and it appears that it will feature a large curved glass curtain wall on the ground floor.

iControlPad 2 reaches Kickstarter goal, shipping later this year
I'll be honest: I thought that US$150,000 as a Kickstarter goal for the iControlPad 2 wireless controller was too high, but it turns out I was completely wrong. Not only was the project funded, but backers have pledged $190k and still counting with a few more hours to go.

Netflix app for Windows 8 now available for download
Microsoft confirmed some time ago that a Netflix app would be available for Windows 8, and it turns out it's available well before the big October 26th launch date. Netflix announced today that the app is now available for donwnload from the Windows Store for those who've already upgraded to the OS. Expectedly, the app matches the overall style of Windows 8, and Netflix says that it's also made the app more efficient to cut down on both CPU and battery usage. Thieves smash car into Leawood, Kansas Apple Store
If you can't strong-arm your way past Apple's security, smash your car into the store instead. That's what someone or a group of people did at the Apple Store in Leawood, Kansas, early this morning.
Fox 4 from Kansas City reports that police are looking for a suspect or multiple suspects that rammed a stolen Dodge into the front window of the Apple Store, grabbed merchandise and ran off. Police have not released a list of what was stolen as of yet.
It's not the first time this has happened to the Kansas City-area location. In 2010, the same thing happened at the same store, a commenter notes in this story

Nokia finishes offloading Vertu, rumors claim Vertu plans a matching switch to Android
Nokia has ended one of the more significant chapters in its tumultuous history: the Finnish phone giant has finished divesting Vertu to private equity firm EQT VI, shedding direct control of the definitive luxury phone brand. Using an iPhone to detect ear infections
It looks like researchers at Georgia Tech and Emory University have taken blogger Erica Sadun's "Look at your own ear" post from December 2011 to a new level. They've developed an iPhone accessory they call the Remotoscope to turn an iPhone into an otoscope -- that thing doctors usually put into your ear to peer inside.

ChangeWave claims high iPhone 5 demand in spite of issues
Demand for the iPhone 5 remains very high in spite of two potentially serious issues with the device, according to new data from 451 Research and ChangeWave Research. 19 percent of a group surveyed last month said they were "very likely" to buy an iPhone 5, while 13 percent said they were somewhat likely. A poll from October 2011 for the iPhone 4S generated respective figures of 10 percent and 11.5 percent.

Silent Circle to offer secure, private iPhone operation
Two former Navy SEALs have teamed up with cryptographers including PGP developer Phil Zimmermann to develop an iPhone app to provide military-level encryption for unlimited VoIP phone calls, texts, email and video for US$20 per month. If you think Apple is getting a little predictable with its yearly device refreshes, you probably haven't been charting the progress of its iPod nano. While most products in the Apple line receive an update every 12 months or so, few have experienced the kind of annual reinvention of the nano. Quad-core chips rumored for 2014 Apple mobile products
If a research note from Citigroup analyst J.T. Hsu is any indication, Apple is working with Taiwan-based chip manufacturer TSMC on quad-core chips that could be worked into future products such as the iPad and MacBooks in 2014.
According to a report on China Economic News Service (CENS), Hsu noted that Apple began verifying TSMC's 20-nanometer process this past August and may begin some limited-risk production in November. Full production of the more efficient, yet powerful chips would be expected in the fourth quarter of 2013.

Chitika: iPhone 5 beating out Samsung Galaxy S III in web usage already
The latest report from mobile marketing firm Chitika notes that the iPhone 5 has already supplanted the Samsung Galaxy S III in general web data usage after only a few weeks on the market. The Galaxy S III shipped in May, 2012 and the iPhone 5 hit shelves in late September, yet Apple's handset is consuming more web data, according to Chitika's research.

Dell XPS 12 Windows 8 Convertible kommt noch diesen Monat

Pünktlich zum Start von Windows 8 und nach der offiziellen Ankündigung der Preise beginnen heute auch die ersten Windows 8 Rechner mit ihrem Vorverkauf. Der Dell XPS 12 hat einen sehr eigenwilligen Formfaktor mit einem drehbaren Bildschirm und soll schon Ende Oktober für 1199$ in den USA ausgeliefert werden. Apple agrees to licensing terms over Swiss clock design
The Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) and Apple have reached a licensing agreement that'll let Apple use the SBB's iconic clock design in iOS 6. Last month, the Swiss national railway criticized Apple for copying the look of the classic clock face without permission in the clock app on the iPad.
Engineer and designer Hans Hilfiker designed the railway station clock in 1944. It has since become an icon for Swiss innovation and reliability, and its design is present in train stations throughout Europe.

Study: Apple Maps not affecting iPhone 5 demand
ChangeWave Research and 451 Research surveyed 4,270 North American consumers in September 2012 and found that 32 percent were somewhat likely (13 percent) or very likely (19 percent) to buy an iPhone 5 despite the recent negative press, says a report in AppleInsider.

iPad app listens to conversations, suggests topics
MindMeld from Expect Labs is a conversation tool for the iPad that listens to what you are saying and suggests relevant content. The app requires you to login with your Facebook account and find friends with whom you want to talk. You can add some friends and start a voice conversation using the VoIP features buill into the app.
When someone says something interesting, you can turn on the listening feature of the app. MindMeld will then parse the conversation and try to pick out relevant keywords from what everyone is saying. Abgeworben: Chip-Designer wechselt von Samsung zu Apple
Nachdem Samsung in Texas mit seinem Team der Chip-Designer für Aufsehen gesorgt hatte, wechselt nun einer der Veteranen von Samsung zu Apple. Nach 16 Jahren bei AMD arbeitet Jim Mergard nun für das Unternehmen mit Sitz in Kalifornien.
Wie das Wall Street Journal (via MacRumors) berichtet, spielte Mergard unter anderem eine wichtige Rolle bei der Entwicklung des AMD-Chips mit dem Codenamen Brazos, der für den Einsatz in günstigen, tragbaren Computern entwickelt wurde.

Der Cloud-Speicher Ubuntu One hat es nun in einer Beta-Version auch endlich auf den Mac geschafft. Zuvor war es für Linux (auch wenn Ubuntu natürlich als bestmögliche Variante vorgeschlagen wird) und Windows erhältlich. Die Mac-Version ist ziemlich identisch mit den beiden oben genannten Varianten. Grafisch scheint es hier und da noch ein bisschen zu haken, wer aber damit leben kann, kann sich den Service hinter dem Quelle-Link mal zu Gemüte führen.

A church-based private school, along with several other private educational institutions in Sydney, Australia are now informing parents that most students will be required to own an iPad beginning in the next school year. The move to tablets has become compulsory at the schools because educators believe they are significantly more effective as learning tools than notebook, and eliminates the need for students to lug around heavy textbooks. In what could be called the first major policy speech by a defense secretary on cyber security, Leon Panetta said that the US military could be called upon to act preemptively if it detects an imminent threat of cyber attack such as that perpetrated against the White House Military Office. Instapaper developer launches 'The Magazine' as test
Instapaper developer Marco Arment has launched a digital publication called, simply, The Magazine. It will run as a bi-weekly periodical-as-app for iOS devices and feature around four essays from notable writers (such as MacWorld editor Jason Snell in the debut issue) in a format that is easily resized for different devices, some of it taken from blogs and some exclusive content. Arment plans to run the publication as an "experiment" for two months to see if it will be profitable (at $2 per issue), continuing if it is successful.

Library contribution to Google scanning declared 'fair use'
The Authors Guild has been dealt a second blow in one week in its legal fight with Google over book scanning. Just days after Google settled with a group of publishers ending one aspect of the battle, Federal Judge Harold Baer of the Southern District of New York has ruled that libraries who have given Google books to scan are protected by the "fair use" doctrine in US copyright law.

Seventh-generation iPod nano gets first software update
Apple's revamped and seventh-generation iPod nano has only just begun shipping and showing up in stores, but users will likely find a software update is needed before they can sync the new devices with their Macs. Rather than update iTunes, Apple has opted to issue an update for the software that comes on the iPod to make it compatible with recent releases of iTunes, iLounge reports. The software update, referred to as iPod nano (7th generation) version 1.0.1, does not list any specific issues or changes.

Netflix agrees to caption all hosted videos by 2014
To settle a lawsuit filed in 2010 by the National Association for the Deaf (NAD), Netflix has agreed to caption all of its videos by 2014. According to the court filing from yesterday, Netflix captions 82 percent of its videos, and is obligated to hit 90 percent by the end of 2013, with full captioning on everything by the close of 2014. Netflix promises to make "good faith, diligent efforts" to make the over 1,000 devices that its service is provided on, but has no obligation to make 100 percent of them compatible with the new captioning effort.

Deepworld officially launches on Mac, coming soon to iOS
I saw Deepworld in action in March at GDC in San Francisco. It's a Minecraft-style 2D sandbox game, with lots of fun steampunk elements and mechanical contraptions to make. A little while later, the game's developers held a Kickstarter to try and get a Mac beta off of the ground, and though that Kickstarter didn't get funded, the team has moved forward to a launch anyway. DeskPets' CarBot is a little iOS-controlled car
The Parrot Quadricopter is probably the coolest thing you can control with your iPhone, but not all of us are willing to shell out $300 for a fully equipped airborne vehicle. Apple issues update for HP printers, AIOs
Following a recent update for Epson, Canon and Lexmark printers and all-in-ones (AIOs), Apple on Thursday issued an update for most supported HP printers running under Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6), Lion (10.7) and Mountain Lion (10.8). The new combination update for the HP line is 473.4MB in size, though most users will receive the update through Software Update which will be specific for the printer(s) they currently use.

Now that we've taken a look at the Acer Iconia W510, it's heartening to see it finally hit the FCC. The documentation doesn't tell us much we don't already know about the Windows 8 tablet, though it's interesting to note it packs a 7300mAh battery, which will hopefully lead to that promised nine-hour battery life. Acorn updated to version 3.5, lots of new options and tools
Photo-editing app Acorn has been updated to version 3.5, and with that update comes plenty of new features to check out. The Magic Wand tool has been updated with the ability to do contiguous or non-contiguous selections, you can now export just a single layer out of the app, there are some new plugin APIs to use, and there are of course a whole of other updates and bugfixes, all available on the official website.
In short, a great app has been made even better. You can nab Acorn over on the Mac App Store -- it's $49.99. If you already own the app, the update is free.

Photoset is a great free way to share photos
Photoset hit the App Store today, and I am pretty impressed. The app comes from the Tumblr folks and lets you select multiple photos from your iOS device, arrange them, add a caption and put them on the web. When your photos are uploaded, you'll get a url you can email or share through Tumblr or Twitter. Check here for some example photosets.
The app requires no registration, however if you do have a Tumblr account, you can login via the app, select a default blog and upload your photos to it. WSJ: Apple lures leading chip designer away from Samsung
Former AMD chief engineer and US-based Samsung chip designer Jim Mergard is leaving the company to work for Apple, where his expertise on desktop system processors and SoC (systems on a chip) will make him a formidable asset in yet another front in the competition between tech companies: original chip design. Comixology debuts Submit program, picking up indie comics for their app
Comixology runs the biggest dedicated comic book app on iOS (appropriately called Comics), and today it has announced a new program designed to make its comic book marketplace even bigger. Comixology Submit, still in closed beta, will allow independent comic book creators and artists to sell their works directly on Comixology and split the profits with the publisher. Once the service is up and running, creators will be able to submit their works, Comixology will approve incoming submissions, apply its GuidedView technology so users can easily read the digital versions on iOS and sell the books worldwide.

Speak for Yourself settles, iOS talker to be reinstated?
Pittsburgh-based assistive talker developer and dealer Semantic Compaction Systems and Prentke Romich Company has come to an agreement with competitor Speak for Yourself, and has ended the four-month-long lawsuit between the pair. Under the settlement, licenses to two patents and some copyrights are being granted to Speak for Yourself. Semantic and Prentke Romich are withdrawing an infringement notice filed with Apple against Speak for Yourself, which could pave the way towards Apple reinstating the app on the Appstore.

The Rover 2.0 is a futuristic little streamlined tank powered by two treads, one on either side. A small WiFi antenna screws into the top, and six AA batteries are loaded into the bottom.
