Google verfeinert Suche in Gmail
Google hat mit dem heutigen Tag die Möglichkeiten der Suche in Gmail verbessert. Neue Suchoperatoren erlauben eine verfeinerte Suche durch den Mailbestand. Kodak still talking to Apple, Google about patent buy
Kodak is still in talks with Apple and Google about a purchase of its patent portfolio, Reuters reports. The news comes as Kodak has been granted an extended deadline, until February 28th, to keep exclusive control of its bankruptcy case. Kodak claims that it's "confident" its patents will sell for a $500 million minimum, needed to secure a $793 million loan.

Office for Mac 2008, 2011 see new updates from Microsoft
Microsoft's Office for Mac team today released software updates for both the 2011 and 2008 versions of Office for Mac. The updates are highly recommended, as they fix "extremely important" functionality issues and improve overall security. The 2011 and 2008 updates are available as free downloads from Microsoft Support.

Texas Instruments to cut 1,700 jobs as part of its shift away from mobile
Texas Instruments signaled its intentions to back away from the volatile mobile market as the summer came to a close. Unfortunately, we're now learning that the shift comes at a price -- as part of a wider set of cost-cutting measures, TI is shedding roughly 1,700 jobs worldwide. The chip designer hasn't said how soon the layoffs take effect, but these and the overall budget trimming should lead to savings of about $450 million per year by the end of 2013. Noise Industries releases FxFactory 4.0
Noise Industries announced today that visual plugin platform FxFactory 4 is now available. The new update supports Adobe Premiere Pro CS6, as well as Final Cut Pro, Motion, and Adobe After Effects. FxFactory 4 is a video toolbox with a number of plugins for video stylization, color correction, stills animation, keying, stereoscopic 3D, tilting, and more.

Quora overhauls iOS app in version 2.0
Q&A service Quora has released a major update of its iPhone app, v2.0. Aside from now supporting the iPhone 5, the app uses a new interface said to get "out of the way" during use, for instance scrolling the search bar offscreen. PSA: Nexus 4 now available from T-Mobile for $200 on a two-year service agreement
Google Play opened the Nexus 4 floodgates yesterday, but today it's T-Mobile's turn. America's fourth largest carrier is officially offering Google's latest purebred smartphone for $200 on its Value and Classic plans with a two-year service agreement. If contracts aren't really your thing and wasting money is, you can purchase the phone outright for $500, a $150 markup on Google's asking price. Apple working on retail stores for Brazil, Turkey
Apple is planning to open retail stores in Brazil and Turkey, official job listings show. In both countries Apple has put up listings for a full slate of retail workers, including managers, Geniuses, Creatives, Specialists, and other positions. The Turkish store is headed for the capital of Istanbul, while Apple has reportedly told Brazilian news sites that a shop is planned for Rio de Janeiro.

Samsung ATIV Smart PC Pro tablet with LTE clears the FCC

Google+ auto-embeds Android app install links to spur curious downloaders
Next to an in-person demo, social networking is arguably the most common way to learn about apps through unofficial sources. Scosche unveils Lightning charging accessories
Known for its car audio accessories, Scosche also has a booming iPhone and iPad accessory business. The company expanded its offerings by announcing a variety of charging accessories equipped with a Lightning port.
The new chargers are available in either 5W or 12W capacities. The 5W chargers will work with the iPhone 5, iPad mini and the latest iPod models, while the 12W ones will work with any Lightning-equipped device. Scosche didn't provide a launch date for these accessories, but, according to MacRumors, some will ship before CES in early January.

Watch Indie films for free on your iPad, iPhone and iPod touch
SnagFilms is a free, universal iOS app that brings hundreds of independent films to your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch. You search by category or title. SnagFilms offers a nice collection, and I even found a pair of documentaries about Apple.
The app is ad-supported, so you'll see an ad before your movie begins and at least another during the presentation. I understand the need for advertisements, but SnagFilms presented the same ad repeatedly, which detracts from the experience.
I use SnagFilms to watch Macheads and a documentary about the race to the moon on my iPad. The quality of audio and video was fine. The developers say they are adding new films all the time.

News: Report: LTE 4th-gen iPads in Apple stores, not for sale yet
Fourth-generation Wi-Fi + Cellular iPads have started to arrive in U.S. Apple Stores, but they’re not yet for sale, 9to5Mac reports. An official launch date hasn’t been announced, so the iPads could go on sale at any time. First Looks: Tavik Channel Case for iPhone 5
Having been acquired by Incipio, bathing suit and apparel maker Tavik is now releasing iPhone cases under its own brand, including the new Channel Case for iPhone 5 ($35). It's quite similar to the parent company's Faxion, which in turn resembles Speck's CandyShell line. Channel is made of glossy plastic, and lined with soft rubber on the inside. Originally designed as an iPad case, Speck has brought FitFolio ($35) to the iPad mini. FitFolio combines a hard plastic shell -- with properly cut button and port openings -- and a lid with fabric that extends to the back. Apple confirms first Brazilian store opening; also hiring in Istanbul
Apple's ambitious plans to open more retail stores around the world are in full gear. The company emailed a few Brazilian tech news sites with confirmation that the company will be opening a store in Rio de Janeiro soon, the first Apple Store in Brazil.

Apple to appeal Chinese court ruling over pirated encyclopedia apps
Back in September, Apple lost a lawsuit brought by the Encyclopedia of China Publishing House. The publisher had found a pirated copy of its work on the App Store. Apple argued that it was just "running the store" and wasn't actually doing the pirating, but the court found Apple guilty since it had profited from the sales. The result was a RMB 520,000 ($84,000) award to the publisher.

Android cracks 70 percent marketshare in new Gartner data
Android devices now represent 72.4 percent of the cellphone market, according to new third-quarter research data by Gartner. The figure represents a major boost over Q3 2011, when Android had a 52.5 percent share. Some of that ground appears to have come from the platform's closest rival, iOS, which has slipped from 15 to 13.9 percent. Also down are Research in Motion's BlackBerry phones, shifting from 11 to 5.3 percent, and Symbian, shrinking from 16.9 percent to just 2.6.

Sony to release XAVC 4k video spec, licensees include Apple, Adobe
Sony has announced that it'll release an SDK to 4k developers this month for its recently launched XAVC video format used by the new F5 and F55 CineAlta camcorders. The new specification uses MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 video compression, which allows up to 12-bit color depth, 60 fps shooting speed at 4k and 180 fps in HD. So far, fourteen companies including Adobe and Apple have signed on as licensees, and Sony says the format may come to consumer products as well. Macworld benchmarks Fusion Drive Mac mini
Macworld has benchmarked a BTO Mac mini with a 1 TB Fusion drive, 2.6GHz quad-core Core i7 processor and 16 GB of RAM. The extra RAM cost them a whopping $300. (Why has Apple RAM always been so expensive? Does it contain unicorn tears?)

Samsung exec rejects chance of post-HTC talks with Apple
Despite recent developments, Samsung still doesn't intend to negotiate for an out-of-court settlement with Apple, says the head of Samsung's mobile and IT division, Shin Jong-kyun. No end in sight for Apple, Samsung legal battle
Samsung apparently won't be swayed by the recent deal between Apple and HTC. According to a report in the Yonhap News, Samsung's mobile and IT division head told reporters that the Korean company doesn't intend to negotiate with Apple.
HTC recently signed a 10-year cross-licensing agreement with Apple that will end all legal battles between the two companies. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but analysts estimate that HTC will send Apple between $6 and $8 in a deal that'll net Apple over $200 million each year.

AT&T Pantech Magnus (P9090) reappears after fall vacation
A blast from the recent past, Pantech's Magnus has leaked again -- this time with the screen switched on. We've already gleaned that a 8-megapixel, quad-band LTE, MSM8960 dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor and NFC are all part of the AT&T-bound package, while those onscreen buttons suggest Android 4.0 -- at the least. While the Twitter-based evleaks decided to obscure the calendar widget (and the probable launch date), we doubt it'll much longer before AT&T offers a full explanation.

Logitech Alert security cameras add OS X support
One difficult part of using security cameras as a Mac owner is the lack of good configuration utilities that let you control, setup and view your camera feed. Logitech changed that today by introducing its new Logitech Alert Commander app for OS X.
Logitech says its new app "turns your Mac computer into a video security command center." The app works with Logitech Alert security cameras and lets you configure and view video from up to six cameras at once. You can control all the options of the camera including pan, tilt and zoom, motion zones and alerts, and recording.

Apple Maps: Stetige Updates der Flyover-Karten
Apple arbeitet weiter stetig an der Verbesserung seines eigenen Kartenmaterial. So berichtet TUAW etwa von neuem 3D-Material in Atlanta. Auch weitere Teile des Berliner Westens sind seit einigen Tagen in 3D verfügbar.
Ein Leser meldete TUAW, dass man den 3D-Bereich rund um Atlanta deutlich ausgebaut habe. Gefühlt soll es sich “mindestens um eine Ausweitung um 200 Prozent” handeln. Man nähert sich damit immer weiter dem im Süden der Stadt befindlichen Flughafen.

Sicherheitslücke: Skype stellt seine Passwort-Reset Seite ab
Skype-Passwort vergessen? Uuups. Skype hat seine Password-Reset-Seite vorübergehend abgestellt, da sie einen neuen Passwort-Exploit entdeckt haben, der nur mit der Email-Adresse Zugriff auf Skype-Accounts ermöglicht. Der Exploit war zuerst in russischen Foren entdeckt worden, The Next Web konnten den anscheinend sehr einfachen Exploit jetzt aber nachvollziehen. Bevor Skype die Seite offline gestellt hat, konnte man sich vor der Sicherheitslücke nur dadurch schützen, dass man die Emailadresse in eine komplett unbekannte änderte. Skype arbeitet an einem Fix, wann der kommt, ist aber noch unbekannt.

Vimeo testet Filmverleih mit großzügigen Leihfristen, los geht´s 2013 (Video)
Der Markt für Bezahlvideos ist nicht gerade üppig, Vimeo will es trotzdem probieren. Gerade in der Beta befindet sich der PAY-TO-VIEW SERVICE, der vor allem durch komfortable Leihfenster und (zumindest teilweise) weltweite Verfügbarkeit glänzt. Filme lassen sich für 48 Stunden, 72 Stunden, eine Woche oder gar zwei Monate ansehen, was (zumindest in der Beta) dann mit 9 Dollar auch nicht übertrieben teuer ist. Momentan wird der Service mit gerade mal sechs verschiedenen Dokumentarfilmen getestet (nach dem Quelle-Link), Anfang 2013 soll es dann für Vimeo Pro-User mit einem deutlich größeren Katalog losgehen. Der Produzent der Lumix-GH3, riesiger 8K-Plasmabildschirme und weiterer durchaus attraktiver Produkte muß sich damit auseinandersetzen, dass ein Fünftel seiner hundert Geschäftsbereiche Verlust macht. According to scattered reports on the Apple Support Forums, some users who have applied Apple's latest extensible firmware interface (EFI) update are experiencing reduced frame rates while running graphically intensive applications on the Nvidia GeForce GT 650M graphic chipset. Report: iPad, iPhone account for 60 percent of mobile video
Mobile advertising analyst Freewheel has announced that the iPad and the iPhone are by far the most popular non-PC devices when it comes to streaming video. Together, the two devices make up more than 60 percent of all non-PC video viewing. Rayner Software has released version 5.2 of their online anonymity and security tool, NetShade. This version adds VPN support to NetShade's existing HTTP proxy support. Chip Chain is a great game, and considering that it's free (there are in-app purchases, but I didn't find them overly invasive at all), it's probably well worth a download no matter what. Sprint to offer Windows Phone 8 handsets in 2013

Die schwedischen Groovebox- und Synthie-Tüftler von Elektron haben ein bemerkenswertes Teaser-Video zu ihrem nächsten Hardware-Streich vorgelegt: Das 6-Minuten-Filmchen namens "The Demon Who Wears Me" ist irgendwie typischer Skandinavien-Doom, allerdings ohne allzu vordergründige Gewaltausbrüche. Sprint announces 4G LTE for 9 new cities
While Verizon and AT&T are busy locking horns in the battle over network supremacy, Sprint is doing its best to keep up. PC Magazine reports the third-largest wireless carrier revealed today that it has begun work on its 4G LTE network in nine new cities. The new markets include:

Google Shopping spiffs up ahead of the holidays with Shortlists and 360-degree views
Google is getting ready for the holiday season by adding a bevy of features to it premier shopping products. Apple confirms removal of AppleCare from Italian stores
Confirming yesterday's leak, Apple has officially stopped selling AppleCare in first- and third-party Italian retail stores, Reuters reports. An Apple spokesman explains that the policy has actually been in effect since November 9th. People can still buy AppleCare in Italy, but only through Apple's website. An updated notice on the site explains that "AppleCare Protection Plan benefits are in addition to two-year warranty from the seller under the Italian legislation to protect consumers."
