Verizon CFO: LTE rollout should wrap up by mid-2013, months ahead of expectations
Most of Verizon's strategy talk surrounding its long-term LTE plans has conservatively aimed at upgrading all existing coverage areas to 4G by the end of 2013. If we're to believe a CFO Fran Shammo presentation, the carrier may have underpromised and overdelivered: the executive now expects LTE to reach the whole network by the middle of next year, or as much as half a year sooner than first thought. What prompted the quicker rollout wasn't mentioned, although Shammo was eager to point out a surprisingly strong reception to Verizon's (frequently mandatory)

Made-for-i makers to be held to Apple code of conduct
The manufacturers of Made for iPod/iPhone/iPad accessories will soon be held to the same code of conduct Apple expects of its suppliers, claims a TUAW source at this week's Made for i conference in Shenzhen. Although critics have complained about lax Apple enforcement, the code is meant to ensure that suppliers like Foxconn maintain reasonable working conditions and environmental standards. Under the new terms, meeting the code will be a condition of obtaining an MFi license.

Fotopedia has added another luscious app in its travel series. Fotopedia Italy is a free universal iOS app that is like a coffee table book with some interactive features.
The app features a large collection of high-resolution images optimized for the Retina display and iPhone 5. A Trip Builder allows you to create personalized tours, and has interactive maps. It's great for planning a real trip or just doing the touring on your touch screen.

Borderlands 2 to land on the Mac November 20
Mac game developer Aspyr announced today that it would be bringing a port of the popular PC shooter Borderlands 2 to the Mac platform later this month. Borderlands 2 arrives on the Mac just over two months after it was released to PCs and consoles to overwhelmingly positive reception. The Mature-rated shooter will be available in both digital and boxed formats.

Display Menu brings back Mountain Lion's screen resolution to your menu bar
Do you miss the menu-bar option that allows you to select a display resolution? Recently, TUAW got pitched -- rather enthusiastically -- about a utility that helps with this. I tested it and wasn't especially thrilled by either its design or functionality. So I decided to hunt down a better solution. I quickly found one in Display Menu.
A free utility on the Mac App Store, Display Menu offers what I was looking for. With full multi-monitor support, it easily adjusted my various displays with a simple drop-down menu. What's more, it did this with a clever presentation that offers aspect hints as well as resolution values.

Google Play Movies, Music reach Australia, Canada and parts of Europe on November 13th
Google's long-awaited offering of Google Play Movies and Music on Google TV may have answered a longstanding demand for streaming access from some viewers, but it still left many of those outside of the US turning to alternatives. AT&T opens cellular FaceTime to non-Mobile Share devices
AT&T has changed its mind and will allow FaceTime calls over cellular without a Mobile Share plan, according to an announcement. The option will still be relatively restricted however, limited to LTE-equipped devices on tiered data plans. This excludes people with grandfathered unlimited data, as well as owners of any Apple hardware older than the third-generation iPad; exceptions are being made for people on special plans for the deaf and hard-of-hearing. Cellular FaceTime should open up within the next eight to 10 weeks.

Daily iPhone App: Spellitaire mixes spelling and Solitaire
Spellitaire arrived on the App Store last month as the first offering from Knucklehead Software, a studio consisting of two developers who've formerly worked for places like Valve and Blizzard. It's a simple game, which basically replaces the cards in solitaire for letters, which you then use to try to spell words and score as many points as possible within a five-minute time limit.
I like it for its simplicity, though -- some word games can get frantic or complicated, and this one basically sits back and lets you spell whatever you can think of within a very generous limit.

Apple restores exact shipping dates for 4G iPad mini orders
Apple has reversed course on the delivery dates quoted for early online orders of the 4G iPad mini, buyers say. When the tablet first went up for preorder, people were quoted dates of November 21st or the 23rd. Apple then switched the dates to a more generic "mid-November" timeframe, perhaps signalling that it wasn't sure it could meet its goals.

Pulse 3.0 newsreader hits iOS with new interface, improved search
Version 3.0 of the popular iOS newsreader Pulse has hit the App Store and remains a free - but now universal - app for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. The new release introduces a revamped interface that keeps the clean aesthetic the app is known for but simplifies it further, introducing the ability to add unlimited content per page and swipe to reveal a new category sidebar.
The update also brings with it an improved content search. On top of letting you browse a wider variety of sources to add, it makes finding interesting sites and topics easier with a more App Store-like visual presentation.

Parallels 8 gains Windows 8 gestures, better USB 3.0
Parallels has released an important update for Parallels Desktop 8 for Mac, its virtualization software. The code notably supports tablet gestures in Windows 8, and adds a tile to the Windows 8 interface, letting people access shared Mac apps. Atari's Centipede Origins available for free, Pong World due next week
Atari is revving up iOS releases for the holidays by kicking out a few long-awaited titles. First up is Centipede: Origins, which hit the App Store this week. It's a modern take on the old shooter classic. The app is free and universal, though (surprise!) it's also freemium, which means you must earn coins to upgrade weapons and other implements. Centipede purists may be a little weirded out, but it's a solid arcade game with a good progression system.

iPad could replace your office receptionist
To keep a professional feel to a workplace, many businesses hire a receptionist to greet and direct visitors to an office. Receptionists may become an endangered species soon if the Reception Manager iPad platform from the Foundry Group, Rage Digital, and TechStars takes off.
Currently in beta, the platform uses a kiosk-mounted iPad and customizable app to connect visitors to company employees. Upon arriving at the kiosk, the visitor taps a button to indicate the reason for their visit (a meeting, a delivery, and so on), taps another button indicating the name of the employee they wish to see, enters their name and company into the kiosk, and then the employee is notified via text message.

Major Apple suppliers see sales grow 29 percent in October
A group of major Apple suppliers collectively saw sales grow 29 percent year-over-year in October, says Topeka Capital Markets analyst Brian White. The figure is said to beat an average 2 percent growth during the last 7 Octobers, and a 1 percent decrease for the month of September. The achievement is credited to the sheer number of products Apple has launched in the past couple of months, including the iPhone 5, the iPad mini, new iPods, new Macs, and a fourth-generation iPad.

Apple awarded design patent for rounded rectangles
Folklore.org has the full story of how Steve Jobs convinced Bill Atkinson to give the Mac OS rounded rectangles as they were developing the first versions. I won't ruin the story, but if you played with early versions of Windows you may remember it had sharp corners, not rounded ones. Rounded rectangles have been a design concept at Apple for a very long time for a reason.
So it was largely unsurprising to me that Apple just received a design patent for rounded rectangles -- although these are for hardware, not software

DC Comics entire lineup released to iBookstore
Comic book publisher DC Entertainment has announced that its complete line of periodical comic books is now available on the iBookstore. The release includes all DC Comics and Vertigo periodical titles, perfect for fans of the Justice Leagues, Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, and more. The announcement comes one day after DC announced that it had inked deals for distribution by the three largest electronic book resellers.

Rovio launched its much-anticipated Star Wars version of Angry Birds for the iPhone, iPad and Mac. The sci-fi themed edition will let you grab a lightsaber and use the force against those troublesome pigtroopers.

So kann nun in den Apple Stores mit EasyPay in Deutschland, Frankreich, Italien, Kanada und der Schweiz ohne Hilfe der Mitarbeiter eingekauft werden. Die deutschsprachige Siri-Integration ist allerdings noch etwas holprig.
EasyPay erlaubt das eigenhändige Scannen von Zubehör im Apple Store und die Bezahlung über das in der App hinterlegte Zahlungsmittel. Unter anderem in den USA war diese Funktion schon seit einiger Zeit verfügbar.

T-Mobile Q3 results show customer shift from contracts
T-Mobile has issued its third quarterly report for the year, which shows a shift in its customer base from contracts to prepaid services. Although the company's customer base shows a total of 160,000 more customers thanks to the iPhone 5 launch, the higher-revenue postpaid customer base has dropped by 492,000. Reality Absorption Field: Sizing up the iPad mini

On October 23rd, following presentation of slimmed-down Macs and a beefed-up iPad, Apple introduced the long-anticipated iPad mini. With its 7.9" diagonal screen, the smaller iPad doesn't seem dramatically smaller than its bigger brother. Indeed, it's screen is a bit more than 80 percent as large as that of the iPad 2, with which it shares the same screen resolution. And at $329 (up to double that stuffed with 64 GB of flash memory and LTE), it's also a bit more than 80 percent of the iPad 2's starting price.
At $329, the iPad mini starts at $130 more than the 16 GB Kindle Fire HD or ASUS-built Google Nexus 7. The displays on these 7" devices are about 70 percent of

Qualcomm Q4 2012 earnings: $4.87 billion in revenue, $1.27 billion net profit

DC Comics makes deal for Kindle, iBookstore, and Nook
I've written a few times here about Comixology and its strong hold on comics on the iPad, and DC Comics has now signed a deal to put its funny books with three big digital platforms, including Apple's iBookstore. iBooks already had some DC graphic novels available, but this deal is set up to bring DC's monthly releases to customers there as well. DC says that digital sales per title top out at about 40% but overall are up 197% year over year, showing that there's a huge amount of potential in selling digital comic books over devices like the iPad.

Latest Apple patents include "invisible" touch controls
Apple recently filed a patent that makes touch controls disappear -- literally. The patent (No. 8,303,151) is for something called "microperforation illumination," and while the name is catchy, the technology is actually rather complex.

DC Comics adds same day releases to iBookstore, Kindle, Nook
Publisher DC comics announced that it is expanding digital offerings beyond just its own application. Effective immediately, the Apple iBookstore, Kindle Store, and Nook Book Store will all offer the same weekly issues that only the Comixology and DC Comics applications previously carried.

Use tmutil to take control of Time Machine in Mountain Lion
Time Machine works best when you use it as it's designed: You simply let it run in the background and do its thing, only bothering it when you have to go back and get an old version of a document out. HTC Windows Phone 8S hits the FCC with North American 3G, gives the US a horrible tease

Sony Network Entertainment prez Tim Schaaff retires, will remain on board of directors
Tim Schaaff came over to Sony from Apple back in 2005 with a mission of aligning its vast consumer electronics and entertainment interests, and today the company has announced he's retiring from his post as Sony Network Entertainment President at the end of the year. Apple notifies MobileMe members of iCloud.com email options
As one of the many people who purchased a MobileMe subscription in years past, you've probably already made the transition to iCloud and haven't looked back. In July of 2012, Apple noted during iOS 6 beta testing that new icloud.com addresses would be created for anyone using Apple's cloud computing solution as well as former MobileMe members. The transition to icloud.com email is apparently complete, as Apple is sending out a note to those MobileMe members telling them about their new email address option.

Apple Store update allows use of Siri with app
The latest update to the Apple Store app isn't huge, but it does contain a couple of neat perks. Version 2.4 allows you to buy gift cards and email them to family and friends from the app. Those with iOS 6 will be able to use those gift cards with Passbook.

Smash Vote for iOS makes it out just in time
Back at 360iDev in Denver earlier this year, I met a guy named Tate Jennings, an indie developer behind a company called Mighty Bits. Jennings was working on a game called Smash Vote, which he described to me as a political fighting game. It was literally a game featuring versions of famous politicians like Obama and Romney fighting it out Mortal Kombat-style with each other.
