Apple schedules November "MFi" conference in Shenzhen, China
Licensed third-party accessory manufacturers will meet in Shenzhen, China, November 7-9 at an Apple-sponsored "Made for iPhone/iPod/iPad" (MFi) conference. It's expected that hundreds of manufacturers will attend to learn about Apple's licensing program and hear details of new product directions.
As Apple followers might expect, the new Lightning connector is on the agenda for the conference, with a "Designing Lightning Accessories" session the first day. Apple's new connector is expected to make it to all iOS and iPod devices within the next six months or so, and other sessions on "Transitioning from Analog to Digital" and "MFi Program Changes" might also provid

Awesome iPhone mod illuminates Apple logo
OK, this is probably one of the greatest iPhone mods we've seen to date. Featured on Adafruit, this mod uses a "trademark-infringing" replacement back and some other parts to make the Apple logo on the back of an iPhone 4 glow. The modder, Becky Stern from Adafruit, even put a rainbow color decal behind the logo to give it a more retro look.

Apple patent filing describes sound-based proximity sensor
The US Patent and Trademark Office has published several Apple filings, including a patent application for "passive proximity detection" using sound-based technology. Various active sonar technologies have been used for decades, gaining the most attention as a method for depth sounding and echo ranging for ships and submarines, however Apple's implementation would passively utilize audio signals as an alternative to the infrared light-based proximity sensors utilized on most smartphones.

AMD reports $1.27 billion in revenue for Q3 2012
While AMD wrestled to get back on the good foot last quarter, the Sunnyvale chip maker continued to struggle for the third three month financial period of 2012. While reporting $1.27 billion in revenue, the company still saw a ten percent sequential decrease and a 25 percent decrease year-over-year. Newsweek goes all-digital, will cease print publishing at end of 2012
Newsweek Magazine is almost 80 years old, but the print edition isn't going to get much older. The magazine's December 31 issue will be the final one in paper-and-ink format. After that, Newsweek will be all-digital and change its name to Newsweek Global.
Newsweek Global will be available for reading in web browsers and on the iPad and other tablets. Newsweek merged with The Daily Beast in 2010, and some Newsweek content will appear on The Daily Beast website.

Color closeout story shifts; team said to be headed to Apple
It's been a Color-ful 24 hours for anyone following the several contradictory stories surrounding the future of the exorbitantly-funded social media company Color. As the dust settles, it appears that Apple is poised to purchase the heart of Color, just not its name.

Report: Apple acquires Color engineers, not entire company
Contradicting earlier rumors, Apple may not have moved to fully acquire the social video startup Color Labs. Daily iPhone App: Sonic Jump is Sega's first mobile-only iOS title
Sega has released quite a few iOS games so far. Just search the App Store for "Sega" to bring up lots and lots of various Sega-made titles. Many of those games are published by Sega and developed by other companies. The games that Sega has made are essentially all ports, or games that appeared on other systems first. Newsweek ceasing print publication, switches to digital-only
Newsweek, a US magazine that has been running since 1933, will be going digital-only at the start of next year. Punch Quest coming next week from Rocketcat and Madgarden
Rocketcat Games is the great company behind terrific iPhone games like Mage Gauntlet and the very popular Hook Worlds. Die neue Firmware korrigiert den Messfehler im AE-Modus und verbessert diverse Autofokus-Funktionen: so wird das mittlere AF-Messfeld auf Autofokus gestellt, wenn die Kamera mit Objektiven und Extendern verwendet wird, außerdem die Sucherfunktionen wie AF-Rahmen, Gitternetz usw. während der automatischen Fokussierung mit AI Servo AF rot dargestellt. Verizon activates 3.1M iPhones, 3.4M Android phones in Q3
Verizon on Thursday reported its third-quarter performance, which continues to be dominated by smartphone sales on postpaid contracts. The company noted that its Q3 iPhone sales reached 3.1 million units, which includes 650,000 iPhone 5s, while Android phones maintained a slight lead with sales of 3.4 million handsets. The rival platforms together represent 6.5 million out of 6.8 million overall smartphone sales in Verizon's third quarter.

In an apparent error, Google's Q3 2012 earnings have gone live smack dab in the middle of the trading day, instead of after the closing bell as expected. Early indications are that the search giant has notched third quarter revenues of $14.10 billion, representing a 45 percent uptick compared to Q3 2011. Verizon activated 3.1 million iPhones in Q3 2012
Verizon announced its quarterly earnings today and confirmed that it sold 3.1 million iPhones in Q3 2012. This is up from the 2.7 million units that the carrier sold in the previous quarter and up from the 2 million the carrier sold in the same quarter last year.

Nokias drittes Quartal: nur 2,9 Millionen Lumias verkauft, Verlust erstmals unter einer Milliarde Dollar

Die gute Nachricht zuerst: das dritte Quartal dessen Zahlen Nokia heute bekanntgegeben hat, ist seit dem vierten Quartal 2011 das erste, in dem die Verluste unter einer Milliarde Dollar liegen, nämlich bei immer noch 754 Millionen Dollar. Die Lumia-Verkäufe sind seit dem letzten Quartal von vier Millionen auf 2,9 Millionen gefallen, was angesichts des anstehenden Generationswechsels aber nachvollziehbar ist. Die Dumbphone-Verkäufe sind dagegen von 73 Millionen im letzten Quartal auf 77 Millionen in diesem leicht gestiegen, wovon allein 6,5 Millionen Ashas über die Ladentische gingen. Apple loses appeal in UK case against Samsung
Apple lost its appeal in London's High Court and will have to publicly apologize to Samsung for suggesting the Korean company copied Apple, according to a report in AppleInsider. Lightning-Adapter: Welches Zubehör ist kompatibel?
Vor rund einer Woche gab es die ersten Berichte derjenigen, die nach langer Wartezeit endlich ihre “Lightning auf 30-polig”-Adapter von Apple erhalten haben. Dan Frakes von Macworld nutzte die Zeit, um die Kompatibilität mit dem Adapter und altem Zubehör zu testen.

iExit is a universal, US$0.99 app for iPhone and iPad designed to help you find what you need while on the USA interstate system. There are plenty of apps with similar features, but there are a few things that put iExit above the norm.
Mike Rose mentioned iExit in his piece on summer road trip apps, but I'm going to take a deep dive into iExit.
The app has two modes. The on-the-road view provides information on what's ahead, from campgrounds to restaurants to ice cream shops to hotels. You can filter these results, having the app display only gas stations that dispense diesel fuel for example, or just look for the nearest Wendy's.

A securities filing has just revealed that Sprint Nextel has acquired 50.8 percent of Clearwire corp giving it control of the firm. The U.K. High Court has upheld a previous ruling that the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 does not infringe on the design patents that Apple holds on the iPad. Apple had appealed at ruling made by Judge Birss in July that not only does the Galaxy Tab 10.1 not have the ìunderstated and extreme simplicityî of the iPad. Begründung: es besitze nicht "die extreme Einfachheit des Apple-Designs". Auch im Berufungsverfahren zu diesem Urteil musste Apple nun eine Niederlage einstecken. Jetzt steht es für Mac und Windows bereit und ermöglicht endlich die Deaktivierung des Movie-Buttons, damit man ihn nicht mehr unbeabsichtigt auslösen kann. Das ist schön, aber insgesamt fällt die Liste der Neuerung dann soch ziemlich knapp aus: Die Bildqualität bei Aufnahmen mit Weitwinkelobjektiven, die automatische Bildwiedergabe und die Anzeige im AF-Modus "Flexible Spot" wurden verbessert und das Bracketing erweitert. Verizon reports Q3 wireless service revenues up 7.5 percent, LTE now available to 250 million people
The folks at Verizon are revelling in their third consecutive quarter of double-digit growth, having reported a 14.3 percent overall increase in earnings per share year-over-year. Wireless service revenues contributed heavily to that income, growing 7.5 percent year-over-year. The operator attributes these gains to its "4G LTE network advantage," which is now available to 250 million customers and potential customers across the US, as well as to its "well-received Share Everything Plans and unmatched product portfolio." It added 1.5 million postpaid connections, bringing its total wireless membership to just shy of 96 million souls.

Lightning-Stecker: Apple lädt Zubehör-Hersteller zu Treffen in China ein
Die Präsentation des iPhone 5 und des Lightning-Anschlusses ist schon über einen Monat her. Entsprechendes Zubehör ist aber noch nicht wirklich erhältlich. Im November will sich Apple nun mit Herstellern in China treffen, um den neuen Anschluss im Rahmen des “MFi”-Programms zu besprechen.
Hersteller von MFi- oder “Made for i”-Produkten müssen eine Lizenzgebühr an Apple bezahlen, können dafür aber entsprechende Logos auf ihren Verpackungen platzieren. Außerdem erhalten sie technische Unterstützung von Apple. Das nun für die Zeit vom 7. bis 9. November angesetzte Treffen in einem Sheraton-Hotel

Sony Alpha firmware updates bring record button disabling on NEX-7, DSLR lens improvements
Sony's NEX-7 may be fast approaching its first birthday, but that doesn't mean the company's ready to give up on pushing out updates. Analysts estimate average 26M iPhones sold in Apple's Q4
Guessing that strong opening-week sales of the iPhone 5 may offset customers who held back from buying in the three months prior, a quarterly roundup of analyst estimates (both Wall Street and independent) for how many iPhones were sold by Apple in the company's fiscal fourth quarter (which ended on September 30) has a mean average of 26.3 million units, slightly higher than the number sold in Q3. Invitations sent for Google event scheduled for October 29
In the span of seven days, Apple is holding an event widely speculated to be the launch of the iPad mini, Microsoft's Windows 8 is launching accompanied with the Surface RT tablet, and today Google sent out invitations for an event in New York City on October 29 on the same day the Windows Phone is released. Chitika: more iPhone web traffic than Android
According to an updated report by online ad purveyor and and analyst firm Chitika, Apple's iPhone accounts for 46 percent of the smartphone internet traffic. Apple's performance beats out Samsung-built phones by 29 percent of the total share. The previous report cited data saying that web impressions from the iPhone 5 had overtaken the Galaxy S III 56 percent to 44 percent of the cumulative total of the two phones' traffic.

Sharp has announced its intention to launch the Aquos Pad -- a 7-inch tablet with its IGZO display in early December. The tablet has a 1280x800 display, and other technologies which the company says stretches the 2,040mAh battery out to 2.5 times greater than existing tablets. Apple will hold its next "Made for iPhone/iPod/iPad" (MFi) conference a month earlier than last year, gathering hundreds of licensed third-party accessory makers in the city of Shenzhen, China to discuss new devices, directions for accessories and other aspects of Apple's licensing program. Infinity Blade spinoff delayed until next year
The original Infinity Blade was one of the first iOS titles that proved downloadable mobile games could have the same polish and flair as a full retail release. Unfortunately, gamers waiting patiently for the next installment, titled Infinity Blade: Dungeons, will have to wait until 2013 to sharpen their swords once again.

Klout adds Passbook support and perks
The social app Klout has updated its iPhone app, with a few surprising features. Personally, I'm not a huge fan of Klout. It's gotten a little bit of a reputation for being spammy, and I think the way it rates influence is more or less meaningless. However, there's one feature of the new app that I think is very interesting, and that's Passbook integration. Yes, the Klout app will now show up in Passbook, and contains a "Klout card" that shows off the user's name, photo, and Klout score. Klout says that showing this card to various people or businesses could have benefits down the road.

Australia's Woolworths drops RIM for iPhones
Australian supermarket chain Woolworths is dropping the BlackBerry handsets used by employees in many of its more than 800 locations in favor of iPhones. The company is in the process of gathering the staff's remaining 550 BlackBerrys, which will then be replaced by iPhone 5s. Australian wireless provider Optus inked the deal with Woolworths.

Boxwave Keyboard Buddy Case for iPhone: Backlit BT slide-out keyboard
Even though the iPhone 5 is quickly becoming the iPhone of choice these days, there are still plenty of good cases for the iPhone 4 and 4S -- including those with keyboards. The Boxwave Keyboard Buddy Case has been out for nearly a couple of years, and they've added a $79.99 (on sale from $89.99) version that includes a backlit keyboard for use in low-lit areas. I tried it on my 4S for a couple of days, and while it's a solid case, it's not one I'd use unless I absolutely need to have a keyboard.
