iOS 7 Security Flaw Allows Siri to Disable Find My iPhone
In iOS 7, Siri can change a number of settings on the iPhone, including toggling Bluetooth on and off or changing the screen brightness. As one MacRumors reader noticed, Siri can also activate Airplane Mode, even if a passcode lock is set, allowing a thief to effectively disable Find My iPhone on a stolen device. However, Apple has added some extensive security features to deter phone theft in iOS 7, most notably the Activation Lock feature that prevents a lost or stolen iPhone from being activated without the Apple ID password used to erase the phone. iOS 7: Searching for apps and info with Spotlight (video tutorials)
In previous versions of iOS, Spotlight -- Apple's search utility -- has always been available by going to the first home screen, then swiping right. In iOS 7, Spotlight is now available on every home screen. Here are two short videos to show you how to use Spotlight in iOS 7, and also how to change the order of search results.
To access Spotlight, simply swipe down on your home screen. Some sites have been mentioning that you need to be in the top row of apps or folders before beginning the swipe -- that's untrue, as you can be anywhere on the screen to begin the swipe. Apple Releases Chrome and Firefox Extensions for Windows to Support iCloud Bookmark Syncing [Mac Blog]
As part of a new 3.0 update for iCloud Control Panel for Windows, Apple has created new browser plugins for both the Chrome and Firefox Windows apps. Using the plugins, Windows users can now sync their iOS Safari bookmarks with the Chrome and Firefox browsers. One of the biggest features in iOS 7 is the introduction of iTunes Radio, Apple's own personal take on streaming radio. Modeled slightly after Pandora, iTunes Radio enables users to create their own personalized music stations based on their existing tastes. That quote may be almost two decades old now and the man who spoke it may no longer be with us, but with today's release of iOS 7 it's clear that Apple still very much believes in it. There are a ton of fantastic features in iOS 7 that have never been included in an iOS release before, but that doesn't make them original. In fact, there are several third-party apps that already do a lot of what makes iOS 7 so special, but by snatching those ideas and making them its own, Apple's own product becomes better -- and the ground beneath these apps begins to shrink.

Apple Increases Over-the-Air App Store Download Limit to 100MB
With iOS 7, Apple now allows app downloads up to 100MB over cellular connections, prompting users to connect to Wi-Fi for larger apps. Apple previously boosted the limit to 50MB with the launch of the third-generation iPad in March 2012. Before that, users could only download 20MB apps over a cellular connection. First Looks: STM Harbour 2 for iPhone 5/5s
A direct sequel to its Harbour case, STM has released Harbour 2 for iPhone 5/5s ($30). Besides a price drop, STM has made a few changes to the body of the CandyShell Flip-inspired case. The inside is still rubber, the outside is still plastic, and there's still a rubber seam connecting a flip-up bottom piece. Now, however, that seam is better integrated, and almost invisible when not flipped. There's still no button coverage, though.

New Apple ad: "Designed Together"
Another day, another operating system, another Apple ad. Today's ad features the iPhone 5c and jauntily demonstrates how the colors of the iPhone 5c, the Apple-designed "holy case," and iOS 7 are all in sync in terms of the use of color. It's fun, it's bouncy, and it's embedded below.

Sapphire Home Buttons Coming to New iPads? [iOS Blog]
Apple will use sapphire home buttons on the new iPad and iPad mini, expected to launch next month, according to a report from DigiTimes. Apple first adopted sapphire to make covers of iPhone 5 cameras and now the material is also used in making covers of iPhone 5S finger print-recognizing home keys, the sources noted. My first five minutes with iOS 7
Note: I'll be updating a few times today as I get my feet wet with iOS 7. Here's the first.
I decided to wait. I traveled to New York today, and set up camp in the TekServ offices in Manhattan to download the new mobile OS from Apple, iOS 7.
Setup
The setup was a breeze, but this time required a passcode and warned me that I chose a crappy one. You can always turn it off later, but I'm happy Apple is pushing your first line of defense for a secure phone.

Apple tops customer satisfaction survey for 10th year in a row
When you ask an Apple fan why they use the company's products, you're often going to hear "because they just work" as a response But those people are loyalists -- how satisfied are general Mac users? It turns out Apple has been at the top of the customer satisfaction charts for the last 10 years. That information comes from the American Customer Satisfaction Index's annual rankings for customer satisfaction of personal computers.

Drafts becomes iOS 7-only with latest update
Drafts is one of many apps making the upgrade to iOS 7 today, but in this case, it's going all the way.
Drafts 3.5 will only support iOS 7, and both iPhone and iPad apps have been fully updated to utilize the new OS. If you are not planning to upgrade to iOS 7 right away, you won't be able to upgrade to Drafts 3.5. But thanks to Apple's newly implemented "last compatible version" feature, you should still be able to download a version of Drafts that works on iOS 6.

iOS 7: Multitasking has a brand-new look
Multitasking functionality in iOS was first introduced alongside the release of the iPhone 4 back in 2010. Since then, multitasking on iOS has largely remained the same.
In iOS 7, Apple has completely retooled the way multitasking (or switching between apps if we want to be a tad more precise) works. While beckoning the app switcher in iOS 7 remains the same -- a quick double tap on the home button -- the entire implementation has been completely retooled. Whether or not you're a fan of Apple's arching aesthetic changes in iOS 7, it's readily apparent that multitasking in iOS 7 is more useful, intuitive and eye-catching than ever.

WSJ: BlackBerry expected to cut up to 40 percent of its workforce by year's end
BlackBerry hasn't been hiding the fact that it's cutting back on its workforce, but a new report from The Wall Street Journal today suggests that another particularly big round of layoffs could be in store. Citing people familiar with the matter, the paper says that the company is preparing to cut up to 40 percent of its workforce by the end of the year, with the layoffs expected to "cut across all departments" and "occur in waves." Probleme beim Herunterladen von iOS 7
Anscheinend ist aufgrund der vielen Vorberichterstattung der Ansturm auf Apples Update-Server so groß, dass viele Interessenten derzeitig entweder von einer Fehlermeldung auf dem Gerät, extrem langsamer Download-Rate oder einer Fehlermeldung in iTunes betroffen sind. iTunes 11.1 und sonstige Aktualisierungen lassen sich wohl ohne größere Probleme herunterladen, aber Nutzer, die auf iOS 7 ak

iOS 7.0.1 will be ready for iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c on Friday
Buyers of new iPhones (5c and 5s) will get iOS 7 pre-installed of course, but they likely will have to update to iOS 7.01 as soon as they are unwrapped. 9to5Mac and others sites are reporting there will be an update pushed through Apple servers on Friday, the day the new phones launch.
The update will reportedly fix a bug with the touch ID system and iTunes purchases. Apple has said the new fingerprint detection will work to make app store purchases.
It isn't known for sure if there is anything in the update for iPhone users who aren't using the newest iPhones. We'll find out Friday.

Apple seeks music experts to ensure iTunes Radio doles out hits
One of the biggest features in iOS 7 is the introduction of iTunes Radio, Apple's own personal take on streaming radio. Modeled slightly after Pandora, iTunes Radio enables users to create their own personalized music stations based on their existing tastes. iOS 7 released: go forth and update!
It's finally here! Apple has released iOS 7 to the public.
The new firmware is now available as a direct download from Apple's Phobos servers, through iTunes, and as an over-the-air update for Wi-Fi connections. (The firmware occupies something north of 1.25 GB, so caveat updateus, aka updater beware.)
The new update requires iTunes 11.1, which was released earlier today. If you use your iPhone primarily with a computer, you'll want to grab a copy.

Bevor Apple heute Abend noch iOS 7 veröffentlichen wird, ist nun eine neue Version von iTunes freigeschalten worden. iTunes 11.1 bringt neben Unterstützung für iOS 7 und den Musikstreaming-Dienst «iTunes Radio» (vorerst nur in den USA) auch zwei grössere neue Funktionen «Genius Shuffle» und «Podcast Stationen».

Apple's AirPort Utility, iBooks updated with iOS 7-friendly look, compatibility
Sure, it's not the most exciting news to drop on this iOS 7 official "birth" day, but Apple has updated several apps to bring them into the brave new world of the new iOS. Both AirPort Utility and iBooks have received updates in the last few hours.
The notes for iBooks -- which seems to be sporting the same non-flat icon that it has since it first became an iOS app -- show that "This version of iBooks improves compatibility with iOS and iCloud." The app is still as Scott Forstall skeuomorphic as it always has been, complete with the faux wood library shelves.

YouTube to Implement Offline Viewing Mode in iOS App This November [iOS Blog]

It's no secret that I'm a big fan of Siri, Apple's intelligent assistant. While Siri hasn't yet become as smart or as useful as 2001: A Space Odyssey's HAL 9000 (which might be a good thing), Apple has quietly added some new features to Siri in iOS 7 that turn it from a useful but sometimes frustrating beta app to a really helpful assistant.

iOS 7: The little things
With all the big changes in iOS 7, it's fun to look at some of those little, more subtle things that have been added.
Although it may not be a big deal to many people, I really appreciate that the photo that appears on the lock screen is now full-screen and not placed between black borders.
The clock app icon now shows real time rather than a fixed time as it did in all previous iOS versions. The calendar app has always shown the date. What's missing still is the weather app -- the fixed temperature is now gone in iOS 7, and what we're left with is a picture of some clouds.
The compass app also has some nice changes. The flat redesign is appealing, and now if you swipe the compass screen you get a built-in level. It's great for

Barnes & Noble has sent an email to users of the Nook iOS app warning them that they could experience incompatibility issues between the current app and iOS 7, reports AppAdvice. The company cites two issues to watch out for:

Apple bei PC-Zufriedenheit in USA wieder vorn
Der “American Customer Satisfaction Index” sieht Apple zum 10 Jahr in Folge im Bereich der Personal Computer vorn. Apple liegt 2013 im American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) mit 87 Punkten an der Spitze, gefolgt von Hewlett-Packard mit 80 Punkten. Der Durchschnitt läge bei 79 Punkten. Allerdings wertet der ACSI auch Tablets als Personal Computer, entsprechend fließen bei Apple (aber auch diversen Konkurrenten) die Zufriedenheitswerte von Tablet-Käufern ebenfalls in den Index mit ein. Abgefragt werden beim ACSI auch Erwartungen im Vorverkauf, wahrgenommene Qualität, wahrgenommener Wert, Kunden-Loyalität und die Zahl von Kunden-Beschwerden.

iOS 7 Control Center and Notification Center: Information and settings on the fly
My favorite feature in iOS 7 is the Control Center. Having such a feature was the one reason I jailbroke my phone under previous versions of iOS. No more; the Control Center handles almost all of my desires when it comes to instant access to my most-used iOS settings. The Control Center and the Notification Center go hand-in-hand, but let's take a look at the Control Center first.
Before you get started using it, go into your Settings and take a look at the Control Center options. You have two: the ability to access it on the lock screen and access within apps. I have both of these activated, but at the very least, I advise having the lock screen option activated.
There are five rows on the iPhone version of Control Center.

Road to iPhone 5s: Neues Kamera-System
Am Freitag, 20. September, kommt die siebte iPhone-Generation «iPhone 5s» in ausgewählten Ländern auf den Markt. In den USA, UK, Deutschland, Frankreich, China, Japan und einigen weiteren Ländern wird man ab Freitag die Möglichkeit haben, das neue iPhone-Modell zu kaufen. Wann das neue Modell auch in der Schweiz erhältlich sein wird, kann uns auch Apple Schweiz nicht mitteilen. Apple kündigte vergangene Woche einzig an, dass die neuen iPhones «bis im Dezember» in 100 weiteren Märkten verfügbar sein soll. Vermutlich wird es Oktober oder November, bis das iPhone 5s auch hierzulande verfügbar sein wird. Das neue iPhone bringt neben seinen neuen Farbvarianten «Gold» und «Spacegrau» unter anderem ein neues Kamera-System, neue Prozessoren und ein Fingerabdruck-Leser.

iOS 7 AirDrop: Information sharing without a bump
AirDrop is a Wi-Fi ad-hoc file sharing service, built into iOS 7. It enables information to be quickly sent to another iOS device. While AirDrop isn't perfect yet, it's certainly making sharing files between iOS devices a lot easier than sending them through Mail.
Think of it as an "electronic sneakernet", where two parties just agree to share a file, bring up an AirDrop dialog, and then happily fling files at each other. Now this capability is built into iOS 7 making transferring files as simple as tapping a few buttons.

iPhone 5s: Bremsen 32-Bit-Apps System aus?
Die 64-Bit-Architektur im neuen iPhone 5s soll die Performance deutlich verbessern. Genau das Gegenteil sollen jedoch nicht optimierte 32-Bit-Apps bewirken. Mit dem iPhone 5s hat Apple eigenen Angaben zufolge das erste Smartphone mit 64-Bit-Architektur gebaut. Zu diesem Zweck wurden iOS 7 und die hauseigenen Apple-Apps angepasst. 64-Bit ist schneller, aber… Alle anderen Apps sind natürlich weiterhin kompatibel, beeinträchtigen jedoch die Performance des Systems. iOS 7 auf einem 64-Bit-Gerät beinhaltet nämlich separate 32- und 64-Bit-Versionen des System-Frameworks. Knapp zwei Jahre nach der letzten Version ist jetzt die neue Folge von Infinity Blade, Infinity Blade III im App Store gelandet. iCloud.com im neuen iOS-7-Design
Apple hat anlässlich der heutigen Veröffentlichung von iOS 7 das Design von iCloud.com angepasst. Die Icons auf der iCloud-Webseite wurden dem neuen Design von iOS 7 angepasst. Anstelle des dunkelgrauen Leinen-Hintergrundes kommt nun ein leichter wirkender, mit Punkten versehener (Bokeh) hellerer Hintergrund zum Einsatz. Dieser bewegt sich, wenn man den Cursor über den Bildschirm bewegt (Parallax).
Noch immer im Beta-Stadium befinden sich aktuell die iWork-Apps Pages, Numbers und Keynote.
Bereits im August konnten die ersten Nutzer unter «beta.icloud.com» das neue Design testen.

Riesige Datenmengen aus Swisscom-Rechenzentren entwendet
Die Swisscom musste heute das Vorhandensein eines Datenlecks bestätigen. Aus zwei Rechenzentren des Unternehmens wurden insgesamt vier Backup-Datenbänder gestohlen, welche Informationen aus dem dem Zeitraum zwischen Oktober 2008 und Mai 2010 enthielten. Die Daten waren auf physischen Bändern gespeichert und sollten gemäss den ursprünglichen Plänen vernichtet werden. Später wurden die vier Bänder von einer anonymen Quelle der NZZ zugespielt. Die Zeitung soll dafür keine Entschädigung verlangt haben und auch keine Forderungen gestellt haben. Welche Motive hinter der Entwendung der Daten steckt, ist bislang noch völlig unklar.

YouTube Apps sollen ab November Offline-Videos erlauben
YouTubes Android App hat bereits im letzten Sommer die Möglichkeit bekommen, vorgecachte Videos zu gucken (wobei man allerdings noch online sein muß), aber das scheint Google noch nicht genug zu sein. Ab November sollen sich nämlich Videos vorladen lassen, die später ohne Internetverbindung angesehen werden können. Das ist in einer neuen Post auf dem YouTube Creator Blog zu lesen (nach dem Break), in der das dann allerdings leicht eingeschränkt wird: "für eine kurze Dauer" heisst es da, also ganze Spielfilme runterladen geht wohl nicht. Das Modehaus Burberry hat anlässlich der «London Fashion Week» eine Modeschau durchgeführt, bei welcher zum ersten Mal das iPhone 5s als Ersatz für professionelle Film- und Foto-Kameras zum Einsatz kam. Während der gesamten Präsentation waren mehrere iPhone 5s im Einsatz, mit welchen die Ereignisse auf dem Laufsteg und hinter der Bühne festgehalten wurden. Die Modeschau wurde direkt ins Internet gestreamt und die Aufnahmen aus dem Backstage-Bereich wurden über die verschiedenen Social-Media-Kanäle verbreitet.
Die Show wurde allerdings nicht nur im Internet verfügbar gemacht, sondern auch auf insgesamt 11 hochauflösenden Screens, welche an Strassen und öffentlichen Plätzen (von der Cromwell Road in London, über New York Time Square bis zu Hongkongs Worldwide House) platziert wurden, gezeigt.

Edge to Edge Design

T-Mobile reprimanded for false advertising claims by industry watchdog
Apparently AT&T isn't the only one thinking that T-Mobile's Uncarrier advertising campaign might be a touch too aggressive. Adobe to Release iPad-Compatible Cloud Stylus and Digital Ruler in 2014 [iOS Blog]
Earlier this year, Adobe unveiled two cloud-enabled hardware offerings: the "Mighty" stylus and the "Napoleon" digital guide and ruler. The tools were in the development phase at the time, but Adobe has now announced that both Mighty and Napoleon will be released during the first half of 2014. Dollar Store Accessories: USB car charger
For a dollar, this USB car charger is quite adorable. Rated at 1 amp and surprisingly well built, I could find nothing to fault with this unit except that I bought it at the Dollar Store.
Let me back up for a second here. Almost none of the other $1 accessories I have purchased to date have an equal potential to utterly and completely mess up[1] my precious iPhone.
That's because I cannot stop thinking about what will happen if things go wrong. Several TUAW staffers had to talk me through the testing because I was a complete nervous Nellie trying it out. (Skipping to the chase? It worked, it worked fine, I kept my testing really short.)

AllThingsD will von den amerikanischen Telekomanbietern erfahren haben, daß die vorrätigen Stückzahlen von Apples iPhone 5S zum Launch am Freitag dieses Mal allerdings "grotesk" klein seien, extremer noch als in den vergangenen Jahren. Die Knappheit soll aber nur das iPhone 5S betreffen, das auch noch nicht vorbestellbar ist, das iPhone 5C soll dagegen in ausreichenden Stückzahlen vorhanden sein.
