Find my iPhone in iOS 6 was great for locating your lost or stolen phone and for locking down your data, but it had a major flaw. A tech savvy thief could restore the phone, remove the SIM card and walk away scot free with your phone. iPhone 5s slaps down competitors in early benchmarks
Zach Epstein at BGR gives us a good, yet short summary of a rather lengthy (13 pages) review of the iPhone 5s posted on Anandtech by Anand Lal Shimpi. In his article, iPhone 5s slaughters its quad-core rivals in performance tests despite having "just" a dual-core CPU and 1 GB of RAM. Tim Cook joins Twitter; tweets about visitng Apple retail store on iPhone launch day
No, this is not an April Fool's Day post. Tim Cook, Apple CEO and legendary operations guru, has joined Twitter. His twitter handle is @Tim_Cook.
While it was initially unclear if the account was one of many parody accounts that have been set up using Cook's name, Apple executive Phil Schiller re-tweeted a post from Cook, effectively verifying the authenticity of the account.
Cook's first tweet reads:

Apple TV 6.0 update now available, adds iTunes Radio support, AirPlay From iCloud and more
It's been expected, but now an AppleTV update has arrived. The new 6.0 firmware adds support for iTunes Radio and purchases from the iTunes Music Store. In addition, updating adds podcast syncing, viewing of shared photo streams and AirPlay from iCloud. This update gets the AppleTV feature parity with iOS 7.
The new firmware also upgrades the AirPlay wireless streaming feature, so you can now play iTunes store purchased content on other AppleTVs.
The download and install was very slow for me today, likely because Apple servers are slammed with all the other updates people are doing with new iPhones and in upgrading devices to iOS 7.

Official PlayStation iOS app to launch in November
Sony announced a November release date for the PlayStation 4 companion app for iOS and Android along with its new console at the Tokyo Game Show 2013, reports Polygon. The PlayStation App will launch on November 15 in the US and November 29 in Europe.
The PlayStation App lets you use your iOS (including the iPad) or Android device as a game controller or use it as a second screen, if that feature is enabled in a particular title. You will be able to download games remotely and the app includes social networking features, such as Twitter and Facebook. The iPhone is doomed, and it always has been
Every single version of the iPhone to ever be released has been doomed. In fact, some of them were so doomed I'm surprised we even acknowledge their existence anymore. Apple needs to just give up before the company has to start selling coffee mugs from its headquarters just to turn a profit.

Bad news from Blackberry: 4,500 jobs to be cut, expected Q2 net operating loss of over $950 million

Apple asks suppliers to increase gold iPhone 5s production
When rumors that Apple was planning to release a gold-colored iPhone began trickling in a few weeks ago, it was greeted with a lot of skepticism. Understandably, many felt that a gold iPhone would be gaudy, ostentatious, and downright obnoxious.
In truth, the aesthetic of the gold colored iPhone 5s is much more subtle, and dare I say, elegant. Consumers have taken notice as well, with reports that the device is already in extremely short supply.
Indeed, demand for the gold iPhone 5s is so great that Apple has reportedly reached out to its suppliers to if they can increase production by 33%.

iOS 7 on an iPad mini: First impressions
After seeing Dave Caolo's post about his first impressions of iOS 7 on an iPad 2, it occurred to me that I ought to write up my feelings about the OS on an iPad mini. The device isn't equipped with a Retina display, but it is one of the devices that can take full advantage of the features of iOS 7. So how does iOS 7 stack up to its predecessor on the iPad mini? The quick answer: very well.
Why? Well, for some reason iOS 7 seems to scale to the smaller size of the iPad mini screen better than it does on a full-sized iPad. While the thin Helvetica Neue text almost seems to get lost on an Retina-display iPad, it's right at home on the smaller iPad mini display. This latest guide by iFixit delves into the differences between the iPhone 5c and both the 5s and 5. Senator Sends Letter to Tim Cook Over Touch ID Privacy Concerns
Senator Al Franken (D-MN) has sent a letter to Apple CEO Tim Cook expressing concern over the new Touch ID fingerprint sensor built into the iPhone 5s, which went on sale earlier today. iFixit Completes iPhone 5c Teardown, Highlights Include Durable Shell, Larger Battery
Following last night's teardown of the iPhone 5s, iFixit has completed its iPhone 5c teardown. Unsurprisingly, the iPhone 5c's dismantling has revealed numerous similarities with the iPhone 5, including nearly identical innards with matching A6 processors. While the internals and form factor are largely the same, the iPhone 5c is slightly thicker and heavier than the iPhone 5 and due to its polycarbonate shell. The 5c also has a larger battery, measuring in at 1510 mAh compared to the 1440 mAh battery of the iPhone 5, and it shares camera parts with the iPhone 5s, though the latter has a larger aperture. iFixit found that the plastic shell was nearly impossible to bend, largely because of its heft – the rear case weighs in at 43.8 grams.

It's a big day for Apple as iPhone 5c and iPhone 5s finally hit stores after months of buzz. People lined up early, stores were packed, and fans were excited. But just because the phone has launched doesn't mean Apple's executives are glued to their desks. Accordingly, CEO Tim Cook and vice presidents Eddy Cue, Katie Cotton, and Phil Schiller decided to hit the pavement along with their customers.

Dollar Store Accessories: Screen Protector
Full disclosure: I don't entirely get the point of screen protectors. My screens, from touch-based to desktop, have all survived entirely fine until this moment without them.
The dollar store iPad-specific screen protector comes with an entire page of directions on the obverse of the container. You clean the screen with the provided cloth ("in a dust-free environment"). You then pull back the plastic backing about an inch, align and then press and work your way down the tablet screen.
The cleaning cloth is about 3x3 inches in side, made of a silky material and did a pretty awesome job in cleaning the grime off both my tablet and my glasses -- it's now been tucked into my backpack for further glasses work. So good win on that!

iOS 7 iBeacons: An unsung feature with immense promise

New iPhones may be using Multipath TCP for Siri
NetworkWorld is reporting that Apple's iOS 7 may be the first instance of large-scale use of a new type of Internet protocol called multipath TCP, or MCTCP. Just what is MCTCP -- and what does it do -- you may ask? Here's what NetworkWorld's John Cox says:
Researchers have been working for years on creating "disruption tolerant" networks, which can automatically work around failures, sometimes multiple failures, and adapt to changing network conditions. Today TCP is a single path protocol: if that path should fail for any reason, the session ends, and the connection has to be re-established.

iOS 7 lock-screen bypass allows access to photos, contacts, social networking
Settle into your seats for the Return of the Lock-Screen Bypass, Part XVII: The iOS 7-ing. Once again, someon's figured out a way to access data from your iPhone or iPad without entering your lock code. (You do have a lock code, don't you?) As for what makes this time different from all other times, it's the first instance of a bug of this type in Apple's newest OS.The trick was discovered by Jose Rodriguez, who also discovered similar bugs in iOS 6. In this case, it requires using the new Control Center feature to get into the Clock app, and then uses a bit of fleet-fingered dexterity to bring up the multitasking interface. There's a great line from the exceptionally addicting television series Breaking Bad where drug kingpin Gus Fring explains why he humbly runs a fast food chicken restaurant and even donates to police related causes.

Official PlayStation 4 App for iOS to Launch Alongside Console in November [iOS Blog]
During its press conference at the 2013 Tokyo Game Show, Sony announced that it will be releasing its official PlayStation 4 app on the iPhone, iPad, and Android devices to launch alongside the release of its upcoming gaming console, reports Polygon. Apple: Demand for iPhone 5s and 5c has been "Incredible"
Everyone on Wall Street pretty much freaked last Monday when Apple didn't announce any pre-order numbers for the total units of iPhone 5c's sold. That's nothing new -- analysts on The Street are a jittery, throw-you-under-a-bus crowd. But the fact that Apple has remained silent is neither good nor bad. However, today that silence has been broken a little bit with the company telling AllThingsD:
"Demand for the new iPhones has been incredible and we are currently sold out or have limited supply of certain iPhone 5s models in some stores."
Will that assuage Wall Streets worries? Probably not. But I sense a well-deserved "I told you so" from Apple coming on when they do announce the new iPhone's sales launch numbers.

iPhone 5s and 5c sorta, kinda pass chest-level drop tests
Android Authority is in Hong Kong with both the iPhone 5s and 5c. Like it has done in the past, the blog put the two phones through their paces in a classic comparison drop test. Joshua Vergara dropped the phones from a chest-level height and sent them to the pavement in the front-first, back-first and side-first positions.
In the end, the iPhone 5s fared well in the tests with only minimal scratches and dings. The iPhone 5c passed with flying colors until a front-first drop shattered the screen. Bummer. You can check out the torture test in the video below.

Zwar ist die Xbox One noch nicht erhältlich, aber viele haben sich schon Platz unterm Fernseher für die Next-Gen-Konsole freigeschaufelt. Wer allerdings gedacht hat, er könne die neue Xbox vertikal aufstellen wie gewohnt, muss enttäuscht werden. Albert Panello erklärte gegenüber GameSpot auf der Tokyo Game Show, dass die Xbox One "keine vertikale Ausrichtung unterstützt". One of the great new iOS 7 features that hasn't gotten a terrible amount of press is its support for MFi game controllers. As a quick primer, 'MFi' indicates that a product has been officially licensed for use on the iPhone/iPad/iPod and thus meets Apple's specifications.

How to block phone numbers in iOS 7
While the iPhone is great for keeping in touch with people, there are some folks who you'd just rather have nothing to do with altogether.
Perhaps you're getting unwanted calls from an ex or a persistent telemarketer who needs "just five minutes of your time."
Whatever the case may be, iOS 7 includes a new feature which makes it easy for you to block selected phone numbers from calling or messaging you.
Here's how it works.
Open up the Phone app and go to your Contacts list. Select the offender in question whereupon you'll be taken to that individual's info page. Scroll all the way down to the bottom and select "Block this Caller."

Wir knobeln immer noch rum, ob dieses Video, das Yahoo jetzt als Promo für die neue Startseite benutzt, in der man noch schöner alles was man so aus dem Yahoo-Universum und anderen (Gmail) braucht, zusammenbasteln kann, wirklich irgendwas mit DJs zu tun haben könnte, aber DJ Clinton Sparks (offensichtlich ein großes Tier im US-DJ-Zirkus) scheint dafür seine CD-Spieler verwetten zu wollen. Jetzt ist es wohl endgültig Zeit sich von den 3D Schatten in Logos zu verabschieden. Auch Google geht den Weg des Flat-Design und hat sein Logo geplättet. 3D ist definitiv von gestern. Seit heute offiziell wird es wohl aber noch Wochen dauern, bis sich das Logo überall rumgesprochen hat. PlayStation Vita TV seeing 'strong response' outside of Japan, Sony looking into EU / US launch
As if it weren't already expected enough, PlayStation Vita TV is almost certainly headed to territories outside of Japan. "During the presentation yesterday, the European / American users showed a very strong response, more than we expected, and there has been a strong inquiry / request / demand that they want the product," SVP and Division President of Business Division 1 at Sony Computer Entertainment Masayasu Ito told Engadget in an interview today. In den ersten Ländern hat in der Nacht auf heute der Verkauf des iPhone 5s und des iPhone 5c begonnen. Vor den Apple Stores haben sich auch in diesem Jahr wieder viele Nutzer versammelt, um sich eines der begehrten iPhones ergattern zu können.
Bereits in den ersten Stunden zeigte sich, dass das goldfarbene iPhone 5s sehr beliebt ist. Während im deutschen Apple Online Store das silberne und das spacegraue iPhone 5s innerhalb von 7 bis 10 Werktagen verfügbar sind, muss man sich für das goldene iPhone 5s noch bis im Oktober gedulden. Ein genaueres Datum wird von Apple momentan nicht genannt.

Google makes Quickoffice free, throws in an extra 10GB of storage

Das güldene iPhone 5s schon mit größeren Verzögerungen

Da haben wir mal ein paar Stunden nicht aufgepasst und schon sind die neuen iPhone 5s nicht mehr sofort zu haben. Für alle Modelle gibt es eine 7-10 Tage Verzögerung und für das goldene wird schon ominös Oktober angegeben. Was genau das heißt können wir nicht sagen, Analysten hatten aber gleich gewarnt, dass die Verfügbarkeit nicht gerade auf Riesenbergen steht. D.h. es könnte durchaus sein, dass Apple einfach nicht so viele (Millionen) produziert hat. Die Käufer hierzulande haben sich jedenfalls von den Plastikbunten iPhone 5c nicht allzu sehr beeindrucken lassen. Und in Cupertino und Miami knallen die Champagnerkorken.

Benchmark: iPhone 5s trotz Dual-Core Prozessor schneller als die Konkurrenz
Einem Bericht von AnandTech zufolge verfügt der A7-Prozessor des neuen iPhone 5s nicht wie vielerorts angenommen über vier Prozessor-Kerne, sondern lediglich über deren zwei. Der A7-Prozessor wird von 1 GB-Arbeitsspeicher unterstützt, womit die Grösse des Arbeitsspeichers im Vergleich zum iPhone 5 nicht gestiegen ist.
Im Vorfeld des letzten Special Events von Apple gab es immer wieder Gerüchte, dass Apple im iPhone 5s einen Quad-Core Prozessor verbauen könnte. Zuletzt haben mehrere Konkurrenten von Apple, wie beispielsweise Samsung beim Galaxy S4 oder LG beim G2, ihre Spitzen-Smartphones mit Quad-Core Prozessoren ausgerüstet.

U.S. Online Apple Stores Go Down Ahead of iPhone 5s Launch
The U.S. Apple Store has gone offline in preparation of the launch of online sales for the iPhone 5s. The iPhone 5s is Apple's new top-end iPhone which incorporates the faster A7 processor, camera improvements and a fingerprint sensor. Southpoint Mall in Durham, NC Lines have started to form at stores across the country. 'Apple Configurator' Updated with iOS 7 Feature Support [Mac Blog]
Apple today updated its iOS device configuration tool for Mac, Apple Configurator, with support for iOS 7's new set of features and restrictions. The Mac app, which was launched in early 2012, allows users to mass configure and deploy iPods, iPads and iPhones in enterprise or educational environments. The new update enables users to allow AirDrop, Control Center and Notification Center on the lock screen, modifying account settings and connecting supervised devices to any Mac. iFixit starts to tear down the iPhone 5s
iFixit is quick to get their hands on the iPhone 5s and start to tear that beautiful piece of hardware down to its screws and rails. This time around, iFixit is not the first to crack open the iPhone 5s. Australian iPhone repair company iExperts can claim that honor as it already showcased the innards earlier today. iFixit, though, has a way with words, which makes the teardown as entertaining as it is informative.

Shadow Puppet lets you assemble narrated slide shows and share them with anyone
Shadow Puppet is a free, universal iOS app that lets you select photos on your iDevice, put them in any order you like, then narrate the slide show while you highlight something in the photo with an animated icon, or zoom and move the photo.
When you are done, you can share your work via email, SMS, Twitter or Facebook. No player is required. The slideshow is created on a private web page, so it can be viewed on any device.
I tried the app and found it very easy to use. You have to create an account if you want to share your photos (note: your email info is not sold to third parties). After your slideshows are uploaded they are instantly available, and the audio and video play back smoothly and in reasonable quality.

UK's Three to sell iPhone 5c and 5s this Friday with unlimited 4G data
The UK's low cost mobile carrier Three has just announced that it will begin selling the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c with unlimited 4G data on Friday, September 20. The iPhone 5s will be available starting at £99 and the iPhone 5c will be available starting at £49 on a 24-month contract from Three stores. As all of Three's mobile plans come with unlimited data, that means owners who buy the latest iPhones through Three can enjoy surfing the web to their heart's content when they're out and about.
Do keep in mind though that Three has not rolled out its 4G plan yet, so iPhone 5s and 5c owners will be browsing on 3G until the 4G rollout begins in London and a few other cities in the UK in December. You can check out the full PR release below.

The release of iOS 7 has brought many wanted and desperately needed features to the waiting hands of iPhone fans. But the most exciting part of iOS 7 for me wasn't the new Control Center or enhanced iCloud options; it was the redesigned Photos app. The iPhone has a wonderful camera. Apple rickrolls the world with iOS 7 knowledge base article
Perhaps Apple's getting a sweet bit of revenge for the unjustified criticism of iOS 7 over the last day, or maybe there's just a person in the Apple Support department who has a really good sense of humor. Regardless of the source of the fun, somebody slipped in a humorous screenshot on knowledge base article HT5858, titled "iOS: Understanding Control Center".
As you can see in the image above, RIck Astley's "classic" tune "Never Gonna Give You Up" is playing on the iPhone belonging to the wag who wrote the KB piece. And that, my friends, is a classic rickroll.

Google releases Google Translate 2.0 with handwriting support
Google has released a major update to its Translate app, which has been neglected for some time. With today's Google Translate 2.0 release, the app finally sees support for the iPhone 5. Google has also updated the app with an iOS 7-inspired design and added an additional seven languages including Bosnian, Cebuano, Hmong, Javanese, Khmer, Lao and Marathi.
However, the biggest update to Google Translate 2.0 is handwriting recognition. Users can now write words with their finger to enter text in 49 languages, which the app will then translate on the fly. Other features of Google Translate 2.0 include support for 70 languages, speech translation and audio pronunciation of your translations.

California regulator sets rules for ridesharing companies
The California Public Utilities Commission approved ridesharing companies early this year, but it offered only a few temporary guidelines while it worked on a formal rule set. Looking back, I should have known that I would end up working in science and technology. As a kid, I loved exploring how things worked -- from mixing different colors and type of soaps in the sink to taking apart our radio. My favorite Christmas gift was the chemistry set shown above. How do you update a few dozen iDevices at once?
So, let's say you have a bunch of iOS devices. How do you update them all to iOS 7 at one time? With Configurator and a big honking USB hub, is how. Yesterday while at Tekserve I got to see the beauty pictured above, a 40-port USB hub that costs more than most iPhones. A limitation in the USB spec prevents charging iPads requiring a certain wattage, but otherwise this sucker was able to update a lot of devices all at once thanks to the miracle of technology.
Also, if you've ever seen groups of iPads in close proximity all clearly operating from the same image (like, say at the Delta terminal at LGA in New York) you'll probably find one of these guys hiding in the furniture somewhere.

iPhone 5s Orders Dry Up Quickly in Germany, France, and the U.K.
Online sales of the iPhone 5s have kicked off in several different countries, and a number of iPhone 5s models, the gold in particular, seem to be in short supply all around the world. As the Apple Stores in France, Germany, and the U.K. come back online, it is clear that the shortages extend to European customers as well. Immediately after coming back up, the U.K. Apple Store displayed shipping times of 7–10 days for all colors and capacities, as did both of the online stores for France and Germany.

European Apple online stores go dark in preparation for iPhone 5s launch
In the last hour all European online Apple stores have gone offline in preparation for the iPhone 5s launch here. Visitors to Apple's European online stores, like the UK store, are now greeted with the familiar "We'll be back" message. However, the wait will soon be over because at midnight local time those stores are set to go online and (presumably) sell out of Apple's latest flagship iPhone in minutes.
Of course, if you can't nab one in the first few minutes when the store comes back online, you can always head out to your local Apple Store. The image above is one I took of people camping out in front of the Covent Garden store in London just an hour ago. As you can tell from the pic, only about 20 people were in line.

The first person to hack Touch ID is going to make a lot of money
Apple's iPhone 5s, which sports the fancy Touch ID fingerprint sensor, hasn't launched yet, but there's already a reward for being the first person to successfully hack it. The aptly named IsTouchIDHackedYet.com is tallying the names of everyone who has pledge money to the individual (or team, I suppose) who can successfully lift a fingerprint from an object and then use that print to unlock an iPhone 5s using Touch ID.

Google makes Quickoffice for iOS free and universal
With Apple making its iWork for iOS suite free with the purchase of a new iOS device, the mobile office wars are heating up as more and more people turn to their phones to conduct business. iOS 7 video tip: Making text more readable
One of the biggest complaints I've heard from people who have made the upgrade to iOS 7 is that they can't read Apple's new favorite typeface -- Helvetica Neue Ultra Light. There's a simple way to make almost everything on your iOS device more readable, and that is to use the Accessibility settings to enable bold text. The result? Well, see for yourself. The image at top left is the "normal" text setting, while the one at right has bold text enabled.
Enabling this readability trick is quite easy: just use Settings > General > Accessibility and toggle Bold Text on. Your device will restart, and once that's done you'll be able to actually read text without straining your eyes.

Dollar Store Accessories: Headphones
What can one say about dollar store headphones. Seriously?
They cost a dollar and noise comes out of them.
Honestly, if you are in a bind -- say your real headset has died and every other store in the city has been closed and there's about to be a power outage and your iPhone with its remaining batteries are going to be the only entertainment you have for the next 72 hours -- then these "stereo" (sometimes) headphones will befine.
Okay, maybe by "fine", I overstate the case a tiny bit. Let me try again.
In testing, I found that sound came out of them, often on both sides. They weren't horribly uncomfortable. And for some reason, they optimistically include extra ear puffs -- not as if the headphones would ever last long enough for them to be used.
