FABtotum 3D prints and scans, mills, takes one step closer to self-replication
Granted, the name's a bit of a groaner (and we now have pictures of Bukowski sitting in front of a CAD program in our heads), but this box is capable of a pretty impressive array of maker activities. There's a 3D Printer, 3D scanner and CNC router on board. You can capture objects and print them out on the same device and do some subtractive manufacturing by way of a dual-head engraving / milling tool that can cut into wood and do PCB milling for circuit boards. Apple Hires Former Levi's Senior VP for Retail Team
Apple has hired Levi Strauss’ former Senior Vice President Enrique Atienza, reports 9to5Mac. Atienza, who formerly handled Levi’s Retail Americas and Global Store Operations, is said to be working as a retail director overseeing multiple regions on the West Coast of the United States. A source says that Atienza will be the director of all retail matters for many regions within the West Coast of the United States, and this role is one of the highest ranking retail positions inside of Apple. Sheeeesh. It's obviously August here in Colorado, with temperatures in the 90s (°F) and no relief in site. It's also hot in Doc's part of the world, with a high of 88°F expected today. Box announces 10GB of free storage and $5 starter plan
Almost everything is getting more expensive it seems, with one glorious exception; online storage. In the digital storage arms race consumers are the winners thanks to a host of generous gigs of free storage offered by companies who want you to use their service. The latest move in the (online) storage wars comes from Box, who have launched a new free personal storage and starter storage plan for budget minded users.
Box's free personal storage accounts have been upgraded from 5 GB of free storage to 10 GB. These plans only allow for one user, but a free extra 10 GB is a free extra 10 GB.

NSA collected up to 56,000 emails not connected to terrorism a year, blames error
We can't say as though we're particularly surprised to see such numbers, but, well, at least they're finally coming to light. According to The Washington Post, newly declassified court documents highlight how the NSA collected up to 56,000 e-mails per year, over a three year period. The docs detail why the collection of such "wholly domestic" information was ruled unconstitutional by a judge in the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, though the NSA stated that the surveillance was unintentional, adding that it reported said information to the court. As part of the ruling, the intelligence agency was required to investigate limits to its data collection -- the NSA claims to have since addressed the problem. The newly available information

Facebook opens up embedded posts to everyone
Now that Facebook has let media outlets try their hand at embedded posts for a few weeks, it's opened up that door to the rest of us plebeians. Lego Apple Store's attention to detail is incredibly impressive (Updated)
About two weeks ago we covered a rather impressive replica of an Apple retail store comprised entirely with Legos. The project was the handiwork of Jon Lazar and he recently updated his website with internal photos of his Apple-inspired Lego creation.

Mac: Twelve South SurfacePad for MacBook
One of Twelve South’s earliest accessories, SurfacePad ($30), has been redesigned for 2013. Now available for both sizes of the MacBook Air, as well as 13” and 15” non-Retina MacBook Pros, the already minimalistic design of the leather palm rest has been slimmed down even further. JBL OnBeat Venue LT review and giveaway
JBL has been making the OnStage line for a while now. I still use an older model for my ancient iPod photo (remember that gem?). The Venue LT I tested has a pop-out Lightning dock, however, and the oomph of a larger system. I've always been impressed with JBL's audio gear, but the Venue LT provides you with plenty of connections in a sleek package for a reasonable price.
Design
I'm always amazed at how small JBL can make its speakers without compromising the volume of the sound. While the Venue isn't tiny, it is dense (meaning the magnets driving the speakers are heavy), and shaped so that it feels like a big bullet in your hands. A

Flat design and mobile advertising
In a guest post for VentureBeat, Patrick Keane writes that the new flat aesthetic in iOS 7 will force mobile advertisers to adjust their approach and will ultimately result in the decline of mobile banner ads.
While I certainly hope that the end result envisioned by Keane comes to pass -- after all, who enjoys intrusive banner ads -- I'm not quite sure if I agree with some of his reasoning.

Dollar Store Accessories: Tablet sleeves
Continuing with our series exploring dollar store accessories, I recently picked up a pair of sleeves compatible with original and bite sized mini iPads.
Widely available at most dollar stores, low cost sleeves provide utilitarian tablet protection. The ones I bought and tested consisted of a spongy exterior fabric, with a sturdy Velcro closing. Both were sized appropriately for Apple products.
There's really not much you can say about a tablet sleeve beyond: "it fits" and "it worked". The ones I purchased satisfied both criteria. They offered satisfactory tablet protection and seemed well enough made for extensive use, which mostly consists of being placed into backpacks, luggage, or briefcases. There were no sharp edges inside or any other concerns of that nature.

Rückseite von iPhone 5C besteht Kratztest
Im Kratztest durch die Redaktion von Apple Daily aus Taiwan hat die vermeintliche Rückseite von Apples iPhone 5C sich gut geschlagen. Angenommen es handelt sich tatsächlich um ein authentisches Bauteil aus Apples Fabrikation, erfährt man von Apple Daily einige neue Details darüber. Die Rückseite wurde von Apple Daily (tw.) in einen Beutel gepackt, zusammen mit einem Autoschlüssel, Büroklammern, Schrauben, einer Reihe von Münzen und weiteren Objekten. Dann wurde der Inhalt kräftig geschüttelt. Direkt nach der Entnahme malträtierte man die Rückseite mit dem Schlüssel und anderen Gegenständen von Hand. DIY: GoPro-Zwille für wilde Kameraflüge (Video)

Wer sich keine Kameradrohne leisten kann oder will oder ein paar halsbrecherischere Luftaufnahmen sucht, kann es auch mit Kamera und Zwille probieren. Das dachten sich Jeremy Cook und seine Kumpels von DIYTripods.com und kombinierten eine Zwille für Wasserbomben mit einer GoPro, die zur Stabilisierung eine Seitenflosse aus Schaumstoff bekommen hat und in einer wasserdichten Hülle steckt. Tatsächlich trudelt das gute Stück noch ziemlich, aber vielleicht können sie das Seitenleitwerk ja noch mit einem Seitenruder vervollständigen.

AT&T to Quietly Offer Refurbished iPhone 3GS Models to GoPhone Customers [iOS Blog]
AT&T retail stores will be offering refurbished iPhone 3GS models to its prepaid GoPhone customers -- no-contract accounts that do not qualify for subsidized phones -- according to a MacRumors tipster. The iPhone 3GS was originally released in 2009 and, notably, will not run the new iOS 7 when it's released this fall. For comparison, AT&T sells the refurbished iPhone 4 for $325, so the 3GS would presumably be offered for well under $300. The tipster claims the phone will not be displayed or promoted publicly, but sales reps will be able to offer them to certain price-sensitive customers. Not all AT&T stores will have them but it is claimed that AT&T's larger and more metropolitan locations should have decent amounts of stock.

How to avoid iCloud email spam
It's nice to know that Makayla, Taylor, Olivia and Madeline are all thinking nice thoughts and letting me order my pills online They're part of a rush of spam emails that showed up in my iCloud email last week. Apparently I'm not the only person who received those oddly-written spam missives, since Chris Breen at Macworld ran a post today on how to report spam emails to Apple so that the next wave is caught by the company's spam filters.
There are two ways to go about this, according to Breen. First, any emails that are marked as junk or dragged into the Junk folder are automatically reported to Apple. This is true whether you are using Mail.app on your Mac or iCloud webmail. It's rather easy to accomplish --

AT&T expanding LTE coverage to 50 more markets by year-end
AT&T plans to make even more iPhone 5, iPad and iPad mini owners happy by the end of 2013, with today's announcement that 4G LTE service will be rolled out to 50 additional markets in the US before New Year's Day.
AT&T's 4G LTE network currently covers 370 markets with 225 million potential customers. By the end of the year, that coverage will expand to more than 400 markets and 270 million people. SwissPen 3D printing pen brings 3Doodler competition well before launch
One's an anomaly, two's a trend, right? And certainly after 3Doodler managed to collect a staggering $2.3 million on Kickstarter (after a modest $30,000 goal), no one would be particularly surprised to see a few other folks rushing to grab a piece of the 3D printing pen action. Google CEO in Talks With NFL Commissioner for Sunday Ticket Deal [iOS Blog]
Google CEO Larry Page has had informal discussions with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and other NFL executives that included talks about the NFL Sunday Ticket package that DirecTV currently holds the rights to, according to AllThingsD. The current Sunday Ticket deal with the NFL -- which sees DirecTV paying $1 billion a year -- ends after the 2014-15 season and the NFL is likely looking to lock up the rights well before its contract with DirecTV ends. A number of pundits have suggested that Apple, Google or Amazon could provide a huge boost to their streaming video services by buying exclusive rights to NFL Sunday Ticket -- though it's likely the price tag will cost quite a bit more than the current $1 billion per year.

PS4: Spiele, Upgrade-Programm und bunte Controller
Seit gestern ist offiziell bekannt, dass die PlayStation 4 am 15. November in Nordamerika und am 29. November in Europa auf den Markt kommen wird. WSJ: Vevo heading to Apple TV as soon as this week
In the early 1980's, everyone wanted their MTV. It was 24 hours a day of music videos interspersed with snappy repartee from cool VJ's. But MTV went the direction of reality TV, and the world lost the fun of discovering new bands and songs. Now Vevo is on the way; it's a joint venture between Sony Music Entertainment and Universal Group that will soon start delivering on-demand music videos and 24 hour-a-day programming via Apple TV.
The Wall Street Journal reports that the Vevo Apple TV app could appear as soon as this week. Samsung Internet TVs will have to wait for a few weeks before getting the service.

34,14 Meter: Marke für höchsten Lego-Turm um 2 Meter gen Himmel geschoben

Apple gewinnt angeblich namhafte Werbepartner für iTunes Radio
Das Portal «AdAge» will aus gut informierten Kreisen mehr über Apples Werbepartner und Werbe-Konditionen für iTunes Radio erfahren haben. Demzufolge soll Apple mit namhaften Unternehmen wie beispielsweise McDonald’s, Nissan, Pepsi und Procter & Gamble Werbeverträge abgeschlossen haben. Die Werbeverträge reichen von einem Volumen von unter zehn Millionen US-Dollar bis in den zweistelligen Millionenbereich. Apple has released an update to iBooks, its first update to the app in 6 months. iBooks 3.1.1 improves compatibility between the app and both iOS and iCloud.
Apple doesn't explicitly list how compatibility has been improved with iCloud, but there had been reports on Apple support forums that sometimes bookmarks and page placements were not being synced properly across devices. Apple is planning to launch iBooks for OS X this fall, which would give the company extra incentive to make sure sync works well with the app.

Zur E3 hatte CCP ein eindrucksvolles Dogfight-Demo für die Oculus Rift HD gezeigt, das wird jetzt zu einem veritablen Spiel und soll 2014 erscheinen. Viel mehr Infos lässt sich der isländische Entwickler dazu nicht entlocken, außer daß das Game "EVE: Valkyrie" heissen wird und auf jeden Fall für den PC kommt. Da CCP aber auch schon für die PS3 tätig war und man bei Sony ja ziemlich begeistert ist von der Oculus Rift könnten wir uns schon eine Konsolenzukunft vorstellen.Video nach dem Break.

Apple aktualisiert iTunes-Festival-App
Apple hat in der Nacht auf heute die «iTunes Festival London 2013»-App für iOS aktualisiert. Die App erhielt ein überarbeitetes Design und beinhaltet nun alle Informationen zu den teilnehmenden Künstlern.
Die App ist als Universal-App sowohl für das iPad als auch für das iPhone entwickelt worden und kann ab sofort kostenlos aus dem iOS App Store geladen werden.
Auch in Apple TV wurde der Kanal für das iTunes Festival wieder freigeschaltet. Der Kanal wird mittels eines Updates automatisch zur Senderliste hinzugefügt. Der Nutzer muss dazu keine Anpassungen vornehmen.

Elektroauto Armadillo-T faltet sich in die Parklücke (Video)

Das Elektroauto Armadillo-T ist auch ungefaltet schon ziemlich klein, gefaltet dürfte es aber wirklich so gut wie jede Parklücke nutzen können. Das am Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) entwickelte Auto hat Vierradantrieb, die Motoren sitzen direkt in den Rädern und werden von einem 13,6 kWh-Akku angetrieben. Auch sonst hat der Armadillo-T eine Menge Hightech zu bieten: neben Smartphonesteuerung und Kameras als Seitenspiegel eine Schnelladefunktion, die in zehn Minuten eine Reichweite von 100 Kilometern schafft, eine Serienproduktion ist allerdings noch offen. Neue iPhones ab dem 20. September erhältlich?
Gemäss einem Bericht der japanischen Zeitung «Nikkei» wird die nächste Generation des iPhones sowie die spekulierte günstigere Version des iPhones ab dem 20. September in Japan zu kaufen geben. Damit würde Apple die nächste iPhone-Generation 10 Tage nach dem mutmasslichen Special-Event zum neuen iPhone veröffentlichen. Diese Zeitspanne ist durchaus realistisch, wenn man bedenkt, dass im letzten Jahr nur ein Tag weniger zwischen der Vorstellung und dem ersten Verkaufstag des iPhone 5 verstrichen ist. Zudem war auch im letzten Jahr der erste Verkaufstag ein Freitag.

Apple updates Logic Pro X with bug fixes

Apple informiert über Dev-Center-Unterbruch
Apple hat über die firmeneigene «Web Server Notifications»-Seite detailliertere Informationen darüber veröffentlicht, wieso das Developer Center während mehr als drei Wochen nicht erreichbar war. Gemäss den von Apple veröffentlichten Informationen informierten die Unternehmen «7dscan.com» und «SCANV» Apple am 18. Juli über eine «Remote Code Execution». Genauere Angaben, beispielsweise über die Vorgehensweise des Angriffes, wurden von Apple allerdings nicht veröffentlicht. Am gleichen Tag wurde zudem eine weitere «Remote Code Execution» bei einem anderen Service von Apple registriert.

November sein, wie Sony gestern auf der Gamescom verkündete, passend und rechtzeitig also zum Weihnachtsgeschäft. GOG.com launches indie game portal that could compete with the Mac App Store
If you're an indie game developer and want to see your wares distributed on Mac, you're probably going to target either the Mac App Store or Steam. While both of these marketplaces are vibrant, GOG.com thinks it might be able to do things even better. The digital game distribution outlet -- which originally launched to focus strictly on vintage titles -- is launching a new indie developer portal for both Mac and Windows titles.
Perhaps the most interesting thing about GOG's new venture is that it could very well become a direct competitor to Apple's own Mac App Store. With iTunes Radio set to hit the ground running once Apple releases iOS 7 to the masses sometime this fall, Apple has been busy signing up number of big-name advertisers to help bankroll the company's first foray into internet radio.

Google announces new YouTube for iOS with multitasking
Google has just made it easier to never stop watching videos on your iOS device. Today the company launched the latest update of the iOS version of YouTube, bringing with it the ability to multitask within the app. Bow down, you gods of self control.
The multitasking feature allows users to minimize their current video to a small box on the bottom right of the screen, bringing up a search function where you can find new videos. We can now search for cat videos while we watch cat videos. When you find what you're looking for, the minimized window can be quickly closed or brought back to full screen by swiping your finger right or left respectively.
