Apple Developer Center outage fixed 'Remote Code Execution' issue
The Apple Developer Center downtime that brought the dev corner of Apple's online services down for over a week was apparently centered around what the company is calling a "remote code execution issue,' MacRumors reports. The company posted the information on the Apple Web Server Notifications page, crediting 7dscan.com and knownsec.com for shedding light on the problem.
Interestingly, Ibrahim Balic -- the man who claimed he may have been responsible for the downtime -- has also received a "thank you" from Cupertino, but not for the issue that caused the outage. According to Apple, Balic helped reveal "an information disclosure issue" which was then addressed on July 22nd, four days after the Developer C

Armadillo-T micro electric car folds to fit into compact parking spaces (video)
The Armadillo-T is pretty petite as it is, but when it comes time to fit into tight parking spaces, the all-electric car can do even better. 'Dungeons & Dragons: Arena of War' coming to iOS
MacRumors alerts us that Hasbro and mobile developer DeNA/Mobage are bringing Dungeons & Dragons to iOS. The app is called Dungeons & Dragons: Arena of War and will be released sometime in late August.
The app's website indicates that users who pre-register now will be able to "[upgrade their] character and receive the free Ultra Rare Power, CAUSE FEAR," when the game is released.

Star Trek: Into Darkness released on iTunes ahead of DVD
I'm not a die hard Star Trek fan so all you Trekkies out there will have to forgive me for saying this -- I thoroughly enjoyed Star Trek: Into Darkness. While a few friends of mine, all seasoned Star Trek aficionados, had a laundry list of complaints about the movie, I found it to be everything an action movie should be.
If you haven't yet seen the movie, or if you'd like to catch it again, the title is available for purchase via iTunes. $14.99 will get you the movie in standard defition, but if you'd like the full immersive movie experience, you can download the film in HD for $19.99.

Google Play Services 3.2 adds location-based features, easier G+ sharing

Google Maps for iOS, Andriod gets real-time incident tracking
Back in June, Google acquired the social-navigation app Waze. Now, about nine weeks later, Google has already begun integrating some of Waze's functionality into Google Maps for both iOS and Android.
In a blog entry posted earlier today, Google's Maps team relayed that users of Google's mobile Maps app will now be able to interface with incident reports from Waze users.

WSJ reaffirms rumor of two new iPhone models in September
As we steadily march into late August, the iPhone rumor mill is in full swing. YouTube 2.0 for iOS brings multitasking and playlist searching
Remember that YouTube app revamp which launched hours ago for Android users? It just reached iOS. The YouTube 2.0 update gives Apple device owners the same picture-in-picture video multitasking and playlist search tools that Google offers on its own platform. There aren't any iOS-specific features in the new release, but there's certainly enough to justify a visit to the App Store for an upgrade.

Gazelle survey shows two-thirds of respondents considering an upgrade to a new iPhone
With the impending release of the new iPhone(s) just around the corner, iOS users are facing that yearly conundrum of whether to upgrade or keep the model they're already working with. Sony strikes broadband deals for PS4: Orange, T-Moblie, Virgin Media and more
Sony knows that high-speed internet access is vital to the PS4's success, but that level of service isn't always guaranteed in Europe. Sony drops PlayStation Vita price to $199, confirms Fez and other indie games are on the way

Of all the ridiculous tech in the world, the GoJo iPhone headset has got to be among the most ridiculous. It consists of a headband that attaches to your phone, enabling you to make literally (groan) hands-free calls.
It works courtesy of a suction cup and attachment point stickers. You clean the back of your phone, add the sticker, and grab that sticker with the onboard suction cup.
The grip is reasonably strong. I mention that as an aside, since that grip quickly becomes immaterial. The entire point of this unit is to give you a cheek-and-ear-wedgie, physically attaching a phone to your face for untold sweaty hours at a time.

Apple has released new details on the security flaw that caused the Developer Center to be down for more than a week, noting via its Apple Web Server notifications page that a "remote code execution issue" was fixed. Apple zeigt Mac-Pro-Werbung in US-Kinos
Apple zeigt in US-Kinos das Sneak-Peak-Video des Mac Pro von der WWDC 2013. Als möglicher Veröffentlichungstermin wird “Fall 2013″ (Herbst 2013) genannt. Auf der WWDC 2013 zeigte Apple erstmals wie der neue Mac Pro aussehen wird. Über Preis und Verfügbarkeit hielt man sich jedoch bedeckt. Es hieß lediglich “Later this year” (später dieses Jahr). Das iPhone 5C könnte als neues iPhone 5 angeboten werden, bzw. das Smartphone im Apple-Portfolio ersetzen, wenn es nach Ming-Chi Kuo von KGI Securities geht. In einer Info an Investoren hat Analyst Kuo darüber informiert, dass Apple in Betracht zieht, das iPhone 5 durch das iPhone 5C zu ersetzen. Samsungs Umsatz trotz hoher Verkaufszahlen in China weiter rückläufig
Trotz rund 15 Millionen verkaufter Mobiltelefone in China im letzten Quartal, soll der Umsatz von Samsung hingegen weiter gefallen sein. Analysten hatten viele Hoffnungen in der Verkäufe Samsungs in China gelegt. Die Verkaufszahlen konnte der Hersteller aus Korea steiger, und zwar auf einen Rekordwert von über 15 Millionen verkaufter Geräte im Q2 2013. Tatsächlich steht der Umsatz der Firma im Gegensatz dazu. Apple startet ein Austauschprogramm für bestimmte Grafikkarten von 27-Zoll-iMacs, die zwischen Mai 2011 und Oktober 2012 verkauft wurden. Apple-Patent zu 3D-Gesten und 3D-Objekt-Manipulation vorgestellt
Kann man in Zukunft 3D-Objekte mit Hilfe von iPads und iPhones erstellen? Ein neues Patent von Apple beschreibt zumindest die Verwendung von Touchscreen-Geräten mit 3D-Objekten. Näherungssensoren und kapazitive Sensoren – entweder separat oder technisch in einem Bauteil zusammengefasst – sollen in einem entsprechenden System mit Touchscreen die Manipulation von 3D-Objekten erlauben. Apple-Mitgründer Steve Wozniak fällt ein vernichtendes Urteil über den Film jOBS. Er ist der Meinung, dass der Film auch mit inhaltlichen Fehlern hätte gut sein können, nur leider nicht ist. Recently, a friend asked me if there is any way to easily turn a photograph into a sketch, kind of like they do with journalists' pictures in The Wall Street Journal articles. At the time I told him no, but recently I've found a nice little OS X app that does that very thing.
PicSketch allows anyone to turn a photograph into a sketch in just a few seconds. And while they don't have a WSJ filter like my friend wanted, the app does offer a lot of customization options that allows you to tweak your sketches as you see fit. To use PicSketch, simply drop one of your digital photos into the software. You have two sets of tools to begin your work on converting the pic to a sketch.

Ridiculous Fishing nears $1 million in sales, but could have been free
For a game as absurd as it is, Ridiculous Fishing has become a ridiculous success, with sales topping 300,000 according to developer Vlambeer. The game costs US$2.99 upfront, which amounts to a rather sizable payday for the indie team. Company founders Rami Ismail and Jan Willem Nijman revealed the sales figure today during a talk at GDC Europe, Joystiq reports.
Now that the game is a bonafide App Store darling, its creators also revealed that it was almost sold through a free-to-play model, which is an increasingly popular model for iOS games.

Study: freemium gamers say in-app purchases are worth it
In-app purchases (IAPs) have gotten a lot of bad press over the past year. It seems like it's every other week you'll see an article saying that some kid racked up $20,000 in IAP's on his parents' account and now those parents want Apple to pay for it. But a news study has been released that shines some good light on the practice of freemium games that offer in-app purchases: gamers feel like they're a good deal.
The study was conducted by video game research company EEDAR. It found that out of 3,000 respondents, 75% of those that spent US$50 on IAPs and 67% that spent over $100 thought the price was fair and they were benefiting from the experience. As EEDAR's senior analyst Patrick Walker

TiVo Introduces 'Roamio' DVR That Streams Live and Recorded Shows to iOS Devices [iOS Blog]
TiVo has announced a new line of DVR models that will eventually include support for streaming of live and recorded shows to the iPhone and iPad. The new TiVo, called the Roamio, includes built-in wireless and a new TiVo Stream feature that will allow users to connect their iPhones and iPads to the Roamio remotely and stream live channels and recorded shows. The press release from TiVo features a host of disclaimers, however -- the TiVo Stream feature is not available at launch but should be available in the next few months, streaming is "restricted to a limited number of devices owned" by the subscriber, and not all content can be streamed out of the home. iPad marketshare struggles in China
Research firm IDC reports that iPad shipments to China fell sharply during the second quarter of 2013, dropping from over 50 percent of the country's tablet market to only 28 percent. The iPad is still the top tablet in China, with Samsung grabbing an 11 percent share and Lenovo an 8 percent piece of the pie.

Apple Receives Patent for 3D Gesture Control on Touchscreen Devices
The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) published a newly-granted Apple patent (via AppleInsider) addressing a means for extending the multi-touch input present on Apple's touchscreen devices to the airspace above the screen, allowing for 3D manipulation of objects via 3D gesture inputs. The patent, which was filed in July 2012 and is entitled "Working with 3D objects", describes a system that detects both 2D objects in a user interface and a 3D gesture input close to the device's surface, which then generates a 3D object that is presented in the user interface of the device.

Verizon service coming to 36 NYC subway stations later this year
When it rains it pours -- and pouring rain only stops New York City's 100-year-old mass transit system some of the time. Following its fellow carriers underground, Verizon this morning let it be know that it has inked a deal with Transit Wireless (which has already announced similar partnerships with Sprint, AT&T and the like) that'll bring 3G and LTE voice and data to those 36 Manhattan stations that are already online, later this year. Phase two, meanwhile, will bring 40 additional stations throughout Manhattan and Queens. That part is expected to be completed early next year.

'iPhone 5C' Projected to Give Apple Huge Boost in China
While Apple has experienced tremendous growth in China over the past several years and the market is now responsible for approximately 15% of Apple's revenue each quarter, Apple's momentum has slowed there recently with the most recent quarter seeing a 14% decline in revenue in China year-over-year. A Morgan Stanley analyst team led by Katy Huberty released a bullish new report yesterday suggesting, however, that Apple's rumored lower-cost "iPhone 5C" could spark a surge in consumer interest for Apple in China. According to a survey of 2,000 Chinese consumers in "Tier 1-2" cities, an iPhone 5C could lead to a 13-point smartphone market share boost for Apple in China, with a rumored China Mobile deal potentially adding another six points. Combined, those two scenarios could push Apple to a 36% share of the market in those cities, taking the lead from Samsung.

Siri, der digitale Assistent von iOS, kann viel mehr als «nur» jemanden Anrufen oder über das aktuelle Wetter informieren. Eine kleine Übersicht was Siri sonst noch alles kann ist auf jedem iOS-Gerät ganz einfach aufrufbar: Wird Siri frisch aktiviert (durch gedrückt-halten der Home-Taste), erscheint neben der Sprechblase, ob Siri dem Benutzer behilflich sein kann, ein «i». Ein Tap auf dieses «i» ruft eine ausführliche Liste einiger Dinge auf, die Siri ebenfalls kann.

Tipp: Mac «leiser als leise» einstellen
Die Lautstärke der Tonausgabe von OS X kann über die Tastatur (meist F10-F12) eingestellt werden. Es erscheint ein HUD mit einer Balken-Anzeige — diese ist in 16 Balken unterteilt. Durch ein Trick können diese Blöcke jeweils durch vier weitere Schritte genauer unterteilt werden. Wem die so erreichbare leiseste Einstellung von einem ganzen oder einem viertel «Balken» aber noch immer zu laut ist, kann auf eine versteckte «Super-Leise»-Einstellung zurückgreifen: Zuerst muss die Lautstärke so weit zurück reguliert werden, bis vom System keine Töne mehr ausgegeben werden. Wacom unveils pressure-sensitive Intuos Creative Stylus for iPad
Wacom has unveiled the Intuos Creative Stylus for iPad. The stylus is a pressure sensitive device with 2,048 levels of sensitivity that Wacom says is as close to the experience of pen on paper as anyone has gotten on the iPad yet. A nice feature about the stylus is that, since it uses Bluetooth 4.0, Wacom could build in "palm rejection." That means that touch input with a large surface area won't register when you are suing the stylus, so you can hold the iPad comfortably without messing up your drawings.

HTC Zara soll die Mittelklasse bereichern

Weniger Mac-Verkäufe im laufenden Quartal?
Gemäss dem Analysten Gene Munster von Piper Jaffray ist das Wachstum bei den Mac-Verkäufen im Juli abgeflacht. Allerdings nannte der Analyst keine genauen Absatzzahlen. Für den Analysten sind die von ihm ausgewerteten Daten für Apple «neutral bis leicht positiv» einzustufen.
Für das seit Juli laufende September-Quartal erwartet der Analyst trotzdem einen Rückgang der Mac-Verkäufe um fünf Prozent. Während im letzten Jahr noch 4.9 Millionen Macs im September-Quartal über den Ladentisch gingen, sollen in diesem Quartal lediglich noch 4.65 Millionen Macs verkauft werden. Im Vorjahr konnte Apple noch ein Wachstum von neun Prozent vermelden.
Der Hauptgrund für den sinkenden Mac-Absatz ist vor allem die «Kannibalisierung» durch die Tablets. Für Tablets werden immer leistungsfähigere Apps entwickelt, welche für viele Anwendungen die Anschaffung eines Macs oder PCs überflüssig machen. Im

Neue Rubrik für Kinder-Apps im iOS App Store
Entwickler sollen ihre Apps, die speziell für Kinder entworfen wurden, einer neuen Kategorisierung unterziehen, wie aus einer Mail von Apple an die Entwickler hervorgeht. Entwickler von Kinder-Apps können neu angeben, ob die Apps für Kinder bis und mit 5 Jahren, für Kinder zwischen 6 und 8 Jahren oder für Kinder zwischen 9 und 11 Jahren entwickelt wurden. Es besteht nur die Möglichkeit, eine dieser drei Kategorien auszuwählen.
Entwickler, deren Apps bislang noch nicht in der Kinder-Kategorie sind, müssen eine neue Version der App zur Kontrolle an Apple einsenden.
Die von den Entwicklern neu eingeteilten Apps werden in ihren ursprünglichen Kategorien verbleiben und zusätzlich in der neuen, separaten Kinder-Kategorie erscheinen. Die bisherige Unter-Kategorie «Kinder» wird aus dem iOS App Store verschwinden.

Microsoft unveils 'Independent Developers @ Xbox,' a program for indie game publishing on Xbox One
Microsoft announced a new Xbox One program this morning titled "Independent Develops @ Xbox," an internal initiative aimed at speeding the game publishing process for independent developers on Xbox One. The program enables indie devs to work with Microsoft directly on digitally publishing to Xbox One -- after an application approval process, Microsoft offers approved developers two free development kits. The application process costs nothing, and Xbox VP Marc Whitten tells Engadget that the process for approval is quick.

Gerüchte: Neue iPhones im September, iPhone 5S mit goldfarbigem Gehäuse
Einem Bericht des Wall Street Journals zufolge soll Apple Foxconn gebeten haben, mit der Auslieferung des teureren und des erwarteten günstigeren iPhones bis zu Beginn des Septembers zuzuwarten. Damit könnten sich die Gerüchte bewahrheiten, nach welchen eine Präsentation von Apple am 10. September stattfinden wird. New book highlighting Hurricane Sandy to feature only iPhone photos
Yes, the iPhone can take serious photographs. An upcoming book, #Sandy shows the destruction and hardship Hurricane Sandy brought to the East Coast of the US last year, and all the photos were taken by iPhones. The hardbound book has about 100 images by photographers Benjamin Lowy, Stephen Wilkes, Richard Renaldi, Hank Willis Thomas, Lyle Owerko, Wyatt Gallery, Ruddy Roye, Craig Wetherby, and Michael Christopher Brown.
