ComScore: Apple strengthens lead as top US handset maker in early 2013, Android takes a small hit
The latest numbers from ComScore show Apple strengthening its lead as the top US handset maker, with the iPhone nabbing an estimated 37.8 percent of the market as of January 2013. That's a 3.5-point boost from October of last year, putting healthy distance between Cupertino and the number-two smartphone maker, Samsung. Several analysts cut price targets for Apple stock
Several analysts have reduced their price targets for Apple stock, AppleInsider observes. These include Barclays Capital's Ben Reitzes, who has dropped his target from $575 to $530. Reitzes explains that his team has been considering the move for days, and went ahead with it in spite of meeting with two Apple executives, CFO Peter Oppenheimer and senior VP of worldwide product marketing Phil Schiller. Several topics are said to have been discussed, such as possible uses for the company's $137 billion in cash reserves, and prospects for the iPhone and iPad.

Chicago court rules Google not responsible for unflattering search results
Everyone googles themselves at some point -- even the people who say they don't. But if you don't like what you see when that search box offers possible queries linked to your name, don't go suing Google. The search giant is officially not to blame. DOJ lets waiting period expire on T-Mobile / MetroPCS merger, hints it's good to go
We're sure that MetroPCS and T-Mobile USA executives were on pins and needles wondering whether or not their proposed merger would clear all the regulatory hurdles. While they're not officially free and clear, the Department of Justice has given a strong hint that the carrier union will go through. The government branch just let the mandatory waiting period expire without raising any objections; if it had thought there were serious antitrust issues, it would have piped up by now. US Justice Dept allows T-Mobile, MetroPCS merger to proceed
The merger between T-Mobile and MetroPCS has been given the go-ahead to proceed by the United States Department of Justice. A 30-day waiting period, put in place by antitrust laws, has expired without the DoJ offering any objections to the merger, which would see the combined Deutsche Telekom-owned carrier and MetroPCS further embed T-Mobile's position as the fourth largest US carrier.

Twitter iOS app gets better search, viewing functions
Twitter has updated its official iOS app to v5.4, making a number of improvements. Two of these revolve around search -- the app will, for example, highlight more topic and user suggestions in response to queries or entering a username or hashtag. The update also gives more weight to top tweets in search results, regardless of their age; searching for "election," for example, might bring up posts from the 2012 US Presidential campaign.

Apple, Samsung gain phone marketshare; pull from HTC, Moto
The latest marketshare reports from analyst firm ComScore have become available. Since the end of October, phones manufactured by Apple share of the US market jumped by 3.5 percentage points, and in the same time period Samsung gained 1.9 percent. The leaders grew at the expense of HTC and Motorola. From an operating system perspective, Google and BlackBerry took 1.3 and 1.9 percentage point losses respectively, to give Apple its 3.5 percentage point gain.

Foursquare adds "quick glide" feature to iOS
I'm one of the millions of people who love checking in at locations all over the world with Foursquare. To date, the free social location sharing app has logged almost 3 billion check-ins. Twitter update improves search on mobile and web, enhances autocomplete and web browsing for iOS
Twitter's just announced an update for its Android and iOS apps and mobile site aimed to help users locate desired tweets with ease. Now, search queries for specific keywords will turn up a "Top Tweet" -- a result the company claims is more closely "based on relevance and engagement" -- and an option to "View more from this time" period. ViaSat snags Guinness World Record for highest capacity satellite
After earning top marks from the FCC for its broadband performance, ViaSat has added yet another feather to its cap in the form of a Guinness World Record. Apple Makes Gains in U.S. Smartphone Market Share
comScore today released the results of its monthly rolling survey of U.S. mobile phone users for the November-January period, finding that Apple's smartphone marketshare rose 3.5 percentage points between October and January, up to 37.8% of both U.S. smartphone platform and hardware sales. News: NUU intros MiniKey case for iPhone 5
NUU has announced its MiniKey ($59) case for iPhone 5. Like the iPhone 4 version of the case, the new MiniKey is a slide-out Bluetooth keyboard case, though it boasts a thinner and lighter frame, in addition to other improvements. The backlit keyboard has 42 keys and includes multiple keyboard shortcuts.

TUAW TV Live at 5 PM ET: Reboot edition
Well, after last week's technical issues with the show, I believe that everything will work perfectly today. Why? Well, based on Doc Rock's input, I have a new Wi-Fi router that should handle the streaming traffic with no problem. I have changed the settings for the upload to reduce the bandwidth requirements a bit. And most importantly, Bionic Barb is not working from home this week and clogging our precious bandwidth with VPN traffic.
My good buddy Randy Nelson won't be able to join me this week, so if he's the "bad luck Brian" who has been causing my Ustream woes, that should be another check mark in the plus column. (Just kidding, Randy, I love having you on the show!)

T-Mobile Retaliates Against AT&T's Negative Ad Campaign With New Anti-AT&T Ads

Apple's Suppliers Set New High in January With 99% Compliance Rate for Working Hour Limits
Early last year, Apple launched a new initiative to more openly share information on worker rights and safety throughout its supply chain with working hours and mandatory overtime being a major focus of the effort. Apple's code of conduct specifies that workers may generally work no more than 60 hours per week, although the company does permit limited exceptions during periods of high demand. Foursquare updates iPhone app with streamlined check-in
Check-in service Foursquare is updating its official iPhone app later today, according to a blog post. The new version will let people do faster check-ins via a two-step process, skipping the standard options for commenting, adding a photo, or sharing across other social networks. App maker Toca Boca acquires Zinc Roe
Swedish children's toy and game developer Toca Boca announced today that it is acquiring Zinc Roe, a Toronto-based design studio that creates websites, apps and games for children. The acquisition targeted Zinc Roe's talented development team and its popular Tickle Tap series. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Apple has asked a federal judge to dismiss a lawsuit alleging that Apple has an illegal monopoly because the iPhone does not allow users to use alternative app stores by default, reports Bloomberg. Attorneys who filed the suit in 2011 claim that a monopoly exists because an iPhone user who doesn’t want to pay what developers charge for applications available through Apple’s App Store can’t go anywhere else to buy them. Rumor: Verizon, Vodafone in merger, buyout discussions

Apple has asked a federal judge in California for the lawsuit alleging it holds an App Store monopoly be dismissed, according to Bloomberg. GlassUp is a wearable computing project that turns a pair of glasses into a head-mounted secondary display for your smartphone. A projector beams images onto a glass panel baked into the right-side lens, theoretically letting you read texts, tweets and emails on the go. We were so busy playing with Fujitsu's GPS cane and 5-inch F-02E phone, that we didn't even notice the company introduce a waterproof, dustproof Android tablet. As you can see in that shot above, the Stylistic M702 is more than just water-resistant: it meets the standards for IPX5, 7 and 8, which is to say it can withstand immersion in one meter of water for up to 30 minutes. Der japanische Blog MacOtakara berichtet unter Berufung auf interne Quellen bei Foxconn, dass Foxconn bereit ist, die Produktion für die nächste Generation des iPhones aufzunehmen. iPhone 5S Production Rumored to Have Begun
Japanese blog Macotakara reports (via AppleInsider) that Foxconn is ready to ramp up production on iPhone 5S and that it would be built on the same production lines that currently build the iPhone 5. Macotakara is also reporting that Japan's number one cellular provider, NTT DoCoMo, which doesn't currently carry iPhones, is reducing orders for Android phones for the Fall 2013 season. Still no fix for early 2009 iMac issue with graphics card
Some owners of early 2009 model iMacs that have upgraded to later versions of Snow Leopard, Lion or Mountain Lion have been reporting issues with the included Nvidia GeForce GT 130 video card without a response from Apple, according to a year-long support thread on the company's support website. The issue appears to center around a faulty kernel extension released late in the Snow Leopard updates that remains unfixed, and causes graphic glitches, crashes and even kernel panics when the graphics card is stressed, such as during games.

CleanMyMac releases solid update at no charge to current users
CleanMyMac has been a powerful tool for Mac maintenance for a long time. CleanMyMac 2 has just arrived, and it is even more powerful than previous versions.
The app now has an auto-cleanup function that looks for non-needed files and cleans them up, not by simply deleting them, perish the thought, but by asking you first. The app also removes old logs and caches, and can take a significant whack at your iPhoto library by eliminating duplicate files and unneeded copies of previously edited images. Apple now offering educational version of 21.5-inch iMac
Apple, which has only just this week seen its ability to supply new iMac models match its ability to produce them, is now offering an education version of the current 21.5-inch iMac to schools and universities. The new model includes most of the same features as the base consumer iMac, but uses a dual-core Intel i3 processor rather than a quad-core i5, and the Intel HD 4000 integrated graphics chipset rather than a discrete card. Google launched gift cards for its US Play store just over six months ago, now they are arriving in the UK. Sega announces Sonic Dash, an endless runner starring the blue hedgehog

TomTom partners with Fiat and Toyota to deliver in-dash navigation and traffic reports
If you're a GPS company, one way to keep the smartphone feature creep at bay is to strike deals with car manufacturers, and bake your wares into their vehicles.
