German court issues stay in Samsung's VoiceOver suit against Apple
Hello there, it's Friday and time for your regularly scheduled update on the continuing courtroom hijinks between Samsung and Apple! Today we bring word via FOSS Patents that a German court has stayed one of the approximately 200 million cases (give or take a few) brought by the former against the latter. This one involves a Samsung patent covering the translation on onscreen text to voice, or, as Apple terms it, VoiceOver.
Judge Andreas Voss of the Mannheim Regional Court is putting the brakes on the case, citing the fact that the patent in question is currently having its validity examined by a different German court. In fact, Samsung has already had to narr

SpiderSense ultrasonic radar suit lets you know when danger is near
Know that feeling when someone wanders too far into your personal space? The University of Illinois' Victor Mateevitsi does, which is why he'd built a suit that does the job to a far greater degree of accuracy. SpiderSense is a onesie that uses a series of microphones to rend and receive ultrasonic signals from the space around you, like high frequency radar. When the outfit senses something approaching, a robotic arm corresponding to the microphone exerts pressure on your skin, pointing you in the direction of the danger. The Apple fan behind the Every Apple TV ad YouTube channel has created a new channel and blog with the self-explanatory title Every Steve Jobs video, offering a total of around 150 clips of varying lengths. Greenlight wins injunction vs. Apple preferred stock vote
US District Judge Richard Sullivan has ruled in favor of Greenlight Capital, and issued an injunction against an Apple shareholder vote on issuing preferred stock, Reuters reports. The proposal was to have been brought up at Apple's annual shareholder meeting on February 27th. Greenlight is pursuing a lawsuit against Apple in the belief that if passed, the measure would prevent a preferred stock plan it wants from being considered.

Facebook app update adds free VOIP calls in US and Canada
Facebook just dropped an update to its app in the App Store that allows US and Canadian users to make free VOIP calls to their Facebook friends. The VOIP feature makes its debut after a similar feature was enabled in Facebook's Messenger app in January. International users of the app shouldn't feel entirely left out, either. The update also brings new buttons designs that make it easier to Like, comment, and share posts.

HTC settles with the FTC over claims of insecurities in logging software
Much of the firestorm surrounding remote phone diagnostics in late 2011 ultimately enveloped Carrier IQ and the providers that used it, but HTC was also scorched by accusations that its phones' software flaws (including in HTC Loggers) made privacy breaches possible. The FTC went so far as to level charges against the company for allegedly not doing enough to secure software. Facebook's main app for iOS adds free voice calls inside North America
Facebook has been spreading voice messaging throughout its mobile apps for awhile, but it's clear the Palo Alto crew is no longer happy leaving interaction to canned speeches. Facebook iOS Update Adds Free VoIP Calling in US and Canada [iOS Blog]
Facebook today updated its main iOS app, adding free VoIP calling in the United States and Canada. Facebook previously beta tested the feature in its Messenger iOS app, which received an update to allow voice calling in January. As in the Messenger app, voice calling within Facebook for iOS can be accessed by tapping on a friend’s name in the chat menu and then tapping on the info button, which reveals the option to make a free call. Both parties must install the newest version of Facebook to activate the feature. Facebook’s latest update also adds newly redesigned Like, Share, and Comment buttons.

After Meeting With Apple CFO, Analyst Believes Lower-Cost iPhone Makes Good Sense
Following recent meetings with Apple Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer, Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty today issued a research note sharing some of her takeaways from those discussions and her views on Apple's future plans. While she did not disclose any specific information shared by Oppenheimer, Huberty did come away feeling that Apple will be working hard to expand carrier partnerships and distribution for the iPhone to drive growth in Apple's largest segment. SeatGuru update brings new design, user photos to frequent fliers
TripAdvisor has released version 2.0 of its free SeatGuru iPhone app today, featuring a new design and user-submitted photos of aircraft interiors.
The seat maps are now more realistically rendered so that users have a better idea of what their aircraft seat layout is like and what features -- restrooms, galleys and the like -- are nearby. As before, some seats are labeled in red, yellow, and green to indicate how relatively bad or good they are. With a tap, information about the amenities at each seat appears.

Judge Blocks Vote on Proposal 2 at Next Week's Apple Shareholder Meeting
A judge has decided to block a vote on Question 2 at Apple's annual shareholder's meeting next week, according to a report from Reuters. Hedge fund Greenlight Capital, a major shareholder of Apple stock, filed a lawsuit earlier this month asking that Apple be prevented from bundling a number of proposals into one ballot question at the shareholders meeting. The firm argued that the bundling of three separate corporate governance proposals into one question was in violation of SEC rules. Fixya Study Finds Apple Smartphones to be the Most Reliable
FixYa, a site that provides consumer generated troubleshooting tips, today released a "Smartphone Reliability Report" that compares user complaints on smartphones from Apple (iPhone), Samsung (Galaxy), Nokia (Lumia), and Motorola (Droid). Based on the reported problems, which come from a database of 30 million users, Fixya assigned a dependability score to each manufacturer. According to Fixya's rankings, Apple products were the most reliable, with the fewest reported problems. Apple received a dependability score of 3.47, a good deal higher than the 1.21 that Samsung received. Nokia and Motorola received scores of 0.68 and 0.13, respectively. LEGO Lord of the Rings arrives on Mac
Feral Interactive has released a promised Mac port of TT Games' LEGO Lord of the Rings. The game is based on the Peter Jackson film trilogy, and samples some of the movies' dialogue, but recreates the characters and scenery in LEGO and uses a more abridged and lighthearted version of the story. There's been some debate over the state of the PlayStation 4's hardware when Sony declined to display the console itself at its PlayStation Meeting. Hong Kong firm files complaint over locked iPhones
Hong Kong Telecommunications is turning to the legal system in a complaint with the city's telecoms regulator over Apple iPhone locking, according to the Wall Street Journal. Unlocked phones are commonplace in Hong Kong; in fact, the city was one of the first regions in the world to get unlocked iPhones as an option. The iPhone 5, though, is only compatible with two 4G networks in the area, excluding HKT -- which is owned by Hong Kong's biggest telecoms company, PCCW.

Apple, NYPD working together to locate stolen iPhones, iPads
The New York Post is reporting that the New York Police Department has assigned a team of cops to work with Apple on facilitating the return of stolen iOS devices. The move is in response to widespread theft of popular iPhones and wireless-enabled iPads in the city.
The policemen work with the victims or wireless carriers to determine what the IMEI (International Mobile Station Equipment Identity) number of the device is, and then pass that information on to Apple. The company then responds to the NYPD with the current location of the device. Since the IMEI is

Hodu borrows its name from the Korean word for "walnut," a reference to the culture's use of the nut as an exercise tool in traditional medicine. The barbell-shaped device is a "zero failure" physical therapy tool, aimed at rewarding patients for even the slightest level of feedback. There are on-board pressure sensors and accelerometers for detecting activity and a series of colored LEDs that light up based on feedback levels. MLB.com At Bat ready to play ball for 2013 season
Although snow is still covering the ground in much of the US and Canada, Major League Baseball is beginning to heat things up with the start of Spring Training games today. Apple supplier faces penalties for polluting Chinese river
A supplier of iPad casings is facing sanctions by the Shanghai government for polluting a local river, the Financial Times reports. Waste discharges by Casetek subsidiary Riteng are said to have regularly turned the river milky white since the Songjiang #3 factory opened two years ago. The fish population in the river has died, while area farmers say they can no longer use the water to grow their crops.

NYPD teams with Apple to combat iDevice theft
According to a report in the New York Post, the New York Police Department has assembled a dedicated team to work with Apple to retrieve the stolen device and identify the thief. Police attempt to get the IMEI of the stolen device from the victim of the theft or from online records, and submit it to Cupertino. Apple then relays the police department of the current location of the device. Apple's law enforcement cooperation is well in advance of the announced cross-carrier database, expected in late 2013 or 2014.

Primate Labs benchmarks new Retina MacBook Pro models
Apple bumped the processors in the Retina MacBook Pro line last week, pushing the 15-inch model to the 2.4, 2.7, or 2.8 GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 and the 13-inch to 2.5, 2.6, 2.9 or 3.0 GHz dual-core processors. As usual, Primate Labs grabbed a handy copy of their "flagship product" -- Geekbench -- and tested each model's performance.
The 100 MHz increase in processor speed across the board on the 15-inch MacBook Pros was responsible for a 3 to 5 percent increase in performance as measured by the Geekbench 2 scores. Likewise, the 13-inch models received a bump in both

Google Glass Can Use iPhone's Data Connection Via Bluetooth
The Verge's Joshua Topolsky has written a lengthy piece about his experiences using Google Glass, the company's new on-face computer. Google Glass is a tiny computer that mounts to an eyeglass frame and has a small display that is visible only to the user. The wearable device has a built-in camera that sees what the wearer sees, GPS, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth connections. The glasses can handle many of the same tasks as smartphones, including giving driving directions, sending text messages, showing weather reports and more. Google is hoping to release the consumer version of Google Glass before the end of this year. Toshiba mobile RAM uses prediction, adaptation to cut power use by up to 85 percent
RAM remains one of the principal drains on a smartphone's battery: it's almost always in use, and it saps power even when its host device is idle in a pocket. Toshiba hasn't eliminated that demand entirely, but its new SRAM (not yet pictured here) is intelligent enough to cut a lot of the waste. Study show shrinking Apple lead on phones, tablets in 2012
Apple's dominance in the mobile industry became less pronounced in 2012, according to tracking data compiled by mobile ad network Millennial Media. Millennial notes, for instance, that while the iPhone continued to generate the most ad impressions amongst phones, growing 72 percent year-over-year to a 15.59 percent share, Samsung's Galaxy S series grew 182 percent to hit a 4.24 percent share, pushing BlackBerry Curve phones down to third place at 3.91 percent.

Offiziell startet der diesjährige MWC am Montag, den 25.2., am 28.2. ist die Veranstaltung dann auch schon wieder vorbei. Für uns geht es bereits etwas früher los, denn wir machen uns schon morgen auf den Weg, um uns ein wenig in Barcelona zu akklimatisieren, am Sonntag finden dann auch bereits die ersten Veranstaltungen statt, über die wir für euch vor Ort berichten werden.

MacTech has announced that it will now be offering a new Microsoft Office for Mac accreditation program. The half day course will be offered the day before each MacTech BootCamp II in 2013 and includes information on both Microsoft Office for Mac and Microsoft Office 365. At the end of the course, attendees will be evaluated on the content presented, and those who demonstrate sufficient knowledge will become a "Microsoft Office for Mac Accredited Support Professional." New Retina MacBook Pro Processor Bumps Offer Minor 3-5% Performance Improvements
Following last week's introduction of new processors for the Retina MacBook Air lineup, Primate Labs has analyzed benchmarks coming in from the new machines through the company's popular Geekbench 2 software. PayPal is rolling out a new version of its Here mobile payments system for Europe. Starting in the UK, the payments service will be providing businesses a pocket-sized device that will offer Chip & PIN protection for payments through a retailer's mobile phone, instead of the triangular attachment used in the United States.

Analyst expects cheap iPhone after meet with Apple CFO
Apple will probably release a cheaper iPhone, says Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty in the wake of a meeting with Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer. Huberty says that innovation is still a "top priority" for Apple, and hence why she anticipates a bigger iPhone lineup, as well as unspecified services that could help "unlock significant value" and fuel further device sales. If it managed a one-third cannibalization rate and a gross profit margin of 40 percent, a low-cost iPhone could push up Apple's overall revenue and profit, Huberty suggests.

'Post-PC Era' Predicted By Steve Jobs Taking Hold as Samsung Tops Apple in Connected Device Market
The reality of the "post-PC era" predicted by Steve Jobs at the launch of the iPad 2 in 2011 can clearly be seen in a single graphic created by market intelligence company IDC in a report on what the firm refers to as the Smart Connected Device Market. (Legend omits smartphones shown in yellow) The chart shows the market share decline of both desktop PCs (from 23% in 2010 to just 12% in 2012) and laptops (from 29% to 17%), while tablets grew from 3% to 11% and smartphones from 45% to 60%. SDK für iOS: Google aktualisiert Maps-API
Google präsentierte am 21. Februar ein Update seines Maps-SDK für iOS. Das Entwickler-Kit unterstützt jetzt Gestensteuerung, Overlays und geodätische Weglinien. Außerdem entfällt die bislang nötige Autorisierung für die Verwendung des SDK.Vor iOS 6 war die Integration von Google Maps für App-Entwickler kein Problem — schließlich fand sie auf Systemebene statt. Doch nach dem Start des neuen mobilen Apple-Betriebssystems musste Google selbst den Entwicklern helfen. Das neue SDK für iOS beinhaltet die nötigen APIs und wurde nun um ein paar Funktionen erweitert.

Get Street Views in Apple Maps with a 99 cent app
If you haven't migrated to Google Maps on iOS because you're OK with Apple Maps but you miss Google Street View here's a pretty easy solution.
The US $0.99 app Street View can give you those street views for your destination. Apple allows the launch of 3rd party apps from the Maps app for things like getting transportation maps. That bit of leeway allows other apps to take advantage of that functionality, so the developers at FutureTap have made it all work. It's not seamless, but it is easy.
When you are ready to route to your destination, hit the routing arrow at the upper left in Apple Maps. That will allow you to select the Street Maps app when you select the transportat

HDR: Derzeit kostenlose Foto-Alternative für HDR-Bilder auf iPhone und iPad

iPhone 5 und iPhone 4S sind die weltweit erfolgreichsten Smartphones
Gemäss den Analysten von «Strategy Analytics» wurde im vierten Quartal kein Smartphone mehr verkauft als das iPhone 5. Die Analysten gehen davon aus, dass Apple im vierten Quartal 27.4 Millionen iPhone 5 absetzen konnte. Überraschend auf dem zweiten Platz bei den weltweiten Smartphone-Verkäufen liegt das iPhone 4S. Das Vorgängermodell des iPhone 5 wurde trotz der Rekordverkäufe des iPhone 5 im vierten Quartal laut den Zahlen von Strategy Analytics noch 17.4 Millionen Mal verkauft. Im Vergleich zum Vorquartal, in welchem das iPhone 4S noch das aktuelle iPhone war, stiegen die Verkäufe sogar um 1.2 Millionen Geräte an. Erstes 3D-Printer-Ohr aus Rattenschwänzen und Kuhohren
An der Cornell Universität hat man es jetzt hinbekommen ein Ohr aus dem 3D-Drucker zu holen, das nahezu identisch zum menschlichen Ohr sein soll. Der Prozess beinhaltet neben dem typischen 3D-Druckprozess ein Gel aus Collagen das von Rattenschwänzen gewonnen wird und Knorpelgewebe von Kuhohren. Google Maps API now open to all iOS developers
Back in December when Google launched its Google Maps app for iOS, it also quietly launched a Google maps SDK for iOS developers. The SDK allowed developers to do two things: first, they can embed Google Maps in their apps instead of Apple Maps, and second, they could specify in their apps if an address or directions should be opened in Apple Maps, or the Google Maps app. However, in order to access the SDK, iOS developers had to register their interest and wait in line to be approved, which led to a limited amount of third-party apps bringing Google maps back.
But that's all changed as of yesterday.

Insert Coin semifinalist: Moedls brings 3D scanning to your phone
3D scanners are kinda old hat at this point. But, while we've seen more than our fair share of Kinect hacks, we haven't come across too many phone-based systems. Moedls actually puts the power to create models like the one above in the palm of your hand sort of. The heart of the system is either an iOS or Android app (sorry MeeGo fans), but there are actual lasers with a custom enclosure as part of the platform. Clearly, that does somewhat restrict portability, but it should all fit into a 10-inch x 10-inch x 4-inch box for storage or transportation. Qualcomm mit neuem globalem LTE-Chip
Apples LTE-Chiplieferant Qualcomm hat einen neuen 4G/LTE-Chip vorgestellt, welcher mit über 40 verschiedenen LTE-Frequenzbändern zurechtkommt. Da die Mobilfunkanbieter je nach Land oder Gebiet verschiedene LTE-Frequenzbänder nutzen und bisher nur Chips mit begrenzter Frequenzabdeckung verfügbar waren, müssen die Smartphone-Hersteller mehrere Geräte für die entsprechenden Märkte herstellen. Aktuell unterstützen LTE-Chips meist nur wenige Frequenzbänder, wie man auch beim aktuellen iPhone 5 oder den iPads sieht. Das iPhone 5 wird Beispielsweise in drei verschiedenen Versionen vertrieben. Die drei iPhone 5 Modelle zusammen, zwei GSM und ein CDMA, decken jedoch lediglich sieben LTE-Frequenzbänder ab.

Chromebook Pixel kommt mit QuickOffice

Neue Vorabversion von iOS 6.1.3 an Entwickler verteilt
Apple hat im Verlauf des gestrigen Abends eine zweite Vorabversion von iOS 6.1.3 für registrierte Entwickler zum Download freigegeben. Die erste Vorabversion wurde am sechsten Februar veröffentlicht und trug noch die Versions-Nummer iOS 6.1.1. Aufgrund eines grösseren Problems mit dem mobilen Netzwerk hat Apple am 12. Februar iOS 6.1.1 vorzeitlich für Nutzer des iPhone 4S veröffentlicht. Am Mittwoch veröffentlichte Apple (ebenfalls vorzeitlich) iOS 6.1.2. Mit diesem Update wurde ein Problem mit dem Exchange-Kalender behoben.

AMD plant angeblich Radeon HD 7790 und (neue) HD 7990

Ein weiteres Feature ist die Installation von Add-Ons, die ab jetzt auch bei Windows Nutzern immer bestätigt werden müssen. Updates wie immer automatisch. Cornell scientists 3D print ears with help from rat tails and cow ears

A team of bioengineers and physicians over at Cornell University recently detailed their work to 3D print lifelike ears that may be used to treat birth defects like microtia and assist those who have lost or damaged an ear due to an accident or cancer. Google hat mit dem Chromebook Pixel das erste hauseigene Chromebook vorgestellt. Es verfügt über ein hochauflösendes 12,85-Zoll-Multitouch-Display und erreicht mit einer Auflösung von 2.560 x 1.700 Pixeln eine Pixeldichte von 239 DPI die somit etwas höher als die von Apples MacBook Pro 13" Retina mit 227 DPI ist. Google zeigt «Chromebook Pixel»
Google hat in der Nacht auf heute das Notebook «Chromebook Pixel» veröffentlicht. Damit veröffentlicht Google nach dem erfolgreichen Launch der Nexus-Smartphones das erste eigene Notebook. Der Name deutet bereits darauf hin, dass das Display des Notebooks das Highlight des Gerätes ist. Es wird sich allerdings noch zeigen müssen, ob das Chromebook Pixel ein Erfolg wird.
Das Display
Google bezeichnet das Touch-Screen-Display des Chromebook als eines der Highlights des neuen Notebooks. Das 12.85-Zoll-Display verfügt über eine Auflösung von 2560 mal 1700 Pixel, was einer Pixeldichte von 239 Pixel pro Zoll entspricht. Einhorn takes case for 'iPrefs' directly to investors
Greenlight Capital CEO David Einhorn, who is currently suing Apple to prevent the company from proposing a stock-authorization scheme before its own stockholders for a vote next week, took his case directly to investors in an unusual hour-long conference call. Researchers at IDC have had their ears to the ground keeping tabs on shipments for specific types of devices, and now they've painted a bigger picture of the hardware battlefield in 2012. Next for iPhone seeks to easily log and track your spending, expenses
I feel like we're starting to see another boom in well-designed apps that do cool things easily. Next (US$1.99) is in that category, as the app's interface is clean, intuitive and responsive. That's good, because the app is designed to reduce the friction needed to log expenses -- something that can be a real pain when you're juggling a latte, briefcase and iPhone. But Next does it well, with a few caveats.
Design
If you're a fan of stitched leather, the minimalist aesthetic Next uses may not appeal to you. I like how the grid of buttons is like your iOS home screen, how swiping to see different views is like Reminders. Next is clean and efficient.

Chrome browser gains Web Speech API support in latest stable build

Google updates iOS Maps SDK to v1.1, adds polylines, more
On Thursday, Google revealed version 1.1 of its Google Maps SDK for iOS, offering hooks for developers to tap into new features they can offer in their own apps by connecting any mapping functions to Google Maps. In addition to the revised SDK, Google also changed the requirements -- now letting any developer use the kit immediately rather than having to register first. The new SDK brings ground overlays, viewing gesture controls and polylines for complex pathing.

AllThingsD: No native BlackBerry 10 Instagram app in sight

Orange's Europe-bound trio of branded phones includes its first 4G handset

Independent book sellers sue Amazon, publishers for monopoly
independent booksellers The Book House, Posman Books, and Fiction Addiction are suing Amazon and the "Big Six" publishers consisting of Hachette, HarperCollins, Macmillan, Penguin, Random House, and Simon & Schuster. The suit accuses the seven companies of monopolizing the ebook market by selling titles encumbered by draconian digital rights management and the seeming unwillingness to enter into agreements with smaller bookstore chains or groups have limited consumers' choices and barred independents from successfully entering the ebook market.

In case you're one of the handful of people who hasn't played PopCap's fantastic tower defense-style game Plants vs. Zombies since its release in 2012, we've got some good news for you. Microsoft patent application would automatically disinfect grimy touchscreens
We've all seen that touchscreen device in the store that's covered with fingerprints (and possibly contagions) from curious shoppers. While it's unlikely that we'll get sick from all that touching, Microsoft is trying for a patent that would set our minds at ease. The method would send ultraviolet light bouncing through a film on or inside a touchscreen, disinfecting fingertips and contact areas without blasting the person directly. HTC releases IR API, looking for a few good devs
