CE-Oh no he didn't!: Google's Larry Page says Facebook does a 'really bad job'

It's no secret that Facebook and Google are in a war for the social web. Even so, there's been a certain sense of decorum involved -- up until a just-posted interview with Larry Page at Wired, at least. He acknowledges that Facebook is top dog in social, but is more than a little blunt in claiming that the online rival is doing a "really bad job" with its products (don't hold back now, Larry).

Raspberry Pi creator doesn't expect a sequel in 2013

If you were hoping for a full-fledged Raspberry Pi sequel this year, you'll have to keep waiting. Designer Eben Upton tells ZDNet that, while there should eventually be a replacement, he doesn't expect one in 2013. Both software tweaks and upgrades like the Model B are reportedly doing the job -- and it wouldn't be right to "orphan" the 700,000 existing owners with a new platform, Upton says. He isn't worried about the Cubieboard and other current rivals, as they have yet to be as fast as their raw numbers suggest. We

Intel posts Q4 2012 earnings: $2.5 billion in profit on $13.5 billion in revenue

Intel continues to rake in the dough, posting a quarterly profit of $2.5 billion on a total revenue of $13.5 billion during the final three month period of 2012. While those numbers are down slightly both sequentially and year-over-year, they're hardly disappointing. In a statement released alongside the financial figures, CFO Stacy Smith said the results were inline with expectations. To accompany its quarterly fillings, Intel also released its annual results, which do have some cause for concern. While revenues were only down 1.2 percent from 2011's $54 billion dollar haul to $53.3 billion, net income was down 15 percent, from $12.9 billion to $11 billion. The slow decline of PC sales has certainly effected the company's bottom line, as the PC Client g

Why Walmart's Straight Talk unlimited iPhone 5 plan may not be such a good deal

While the promise of US$45 monthly unlimited data, text, and voice service sounds wonderful, TechNewsDaily is reporting that the plan has restrictions. Once you've used 2 GB of your "unlimited" data plan, your throughput is throttled so downloads will be quite slow. Kinderklo mit iPad-Halterung iPotty soll pädagogisch wertvoll sein (Video)

The PlayStation Vita only holds 100 content bubbles, regardless of available memory

Sony's PlayStation Vita gaming handheld caps its selectable content at 100 items, one unlucky forum user recently found out. Despite having a 32GB memory card for the Vita with 9GB of free space left, the Vita told him (as seen above) that the device caps displayable content at 100 items. ZTE's no stranger to phones that provide more bang for your buck, so it's hardly surprising to see evidence of a new mid-range phablet from the Chinese outfit. The leaked images may not point towards another world first, but the device apparently runs Android 4.1.2 and is rumored to pack a 5-inch, 1,280 x 720 display and a quad-core MediaTek MT6589 SoC. There's also support for China's

Apple and Samsung forge agreement on adding devices to trial

Late Tuesday evening, Apple and Samsung filed a joint agreement with the United Stated District Court for the Northern District of California regarding the addition of new products. The agreement groundwork was laid in November, with some differences of opinion between the pair on some details of the device additions. Apple was granted what it wanted all along -- it would not oppose Samsung adding the iPad 4, iPad mini, and iPod Touch despite potential timing issues, provided that Samsung did not contest the addition of six recently released devices.

Reality Absorption Field: What happens in Vegas

A few years ago, a senior Apple executive was once told that, even though Apple did not exhibit at the annual Las Vegas spectacle that is the International Consumer Electronics Show, its presence seemed to linger in the arid air and in the clouded minds of many attendees. "We love that," he replied. But cashing in on the media attention around CES is but one reason that the the tech show from which Apple abstains has relevance to it. At this year's CES, for example, there were several trends that had relevance to Apple's business both from a cooperative and competitive perspective: Displays The main attraction in the CES circus is almost always television, historically the largest consumer electronics category. The show has long host

Apple, Amazon ordered to settle "app store" suit

Since March 2011, Apple has been battling Amazon in court over the use of the name App Store. In an order handed down yesterday, Judge Elizabeth LaPorte told the two companies that she wants them to sit down and negotiate a settlement. The pair are scheduled to meet on March 21st, says a report in iPodNN. Apple filed its App Store trademark infringement lawsuit against Amazon shortly after the retail giant launched its app store for Android devices. Apple claimed Amazon's "Appstore" would confuse customers and make them t

This is the Modem World: Please don't personalize me. I know who I am

Each week Joshua Fruhlinger contributes This is the Modem World, a column dedicated to exploring the culture of consumer technology. Here's the thing: I know who I am. I don't need Facebook or Google or Microsoft or Apple or anyone else to collect data and tell me what I'm interested in. I'm pretty sure I know what I like and don't like. I'm also pretty sure I know my friends, and if I am looking for a recommendation on something, I'll hit particular ones up based on what I know of who knows what. Know what I'm saying? This week Fac

iLid is an iPhone case and a wallet that works

After having about all the cases I could take at CES, I stumbled upon the iLid booth with a weary eye. I vaguely remembered a Kickstarter campaign a while back, and the case -- which is also a wallet -- was for the 4 and 4S-sized iPhone. It seemed like a cute idea, but these things are often better in theory than in practice. However, at CES I got a sample of the iPhone 5 version and since then I've been trying it out. It's great, especially if you like to keep a small wallet or have less stuff in your pockets. iLid is a plastic case which puts a small chamber on the back of the iPhone. This chamber snap

FAA grounds all US Boeing 787 Dreamliners after second lithium ion battery failure

Boeing's 787 Dreamliner began joining US airline fleets last year, but a fire started by the plane's lithium ion batteries last week put it on the docket for a review by the FAA. After a second mishap caused by the bird's batteries, the FAA is now requiring US airlines to temporarily ground all Dreamliners, according to Reuters. In addition, the agency said it's given international aviation authorities a heads-up so they can take similar measures. According to the re

Daily iPhone App: Time Surfer adds time-shifting to Tiny Wings

Kumobius previously appeared on the App Store with the retro platformer Bean's Quest, but the company's latest, Time Surfer, is a very different project. It's a new take on the very popular Tiny Wings' endless jumping gameplay, with one very significant twist: You can rewind time as you move along. That one mechanic turns the very casual into the extremely complex, as you can theoretically play and replay your jumps over and over again until you time them just right. The time reversal in Time Surfer is governed by the collection of gems, which fill up a meter of limited power,

Sprint offering Total Equipment insurance for iPhone on January 25th

After opting not to offer its Total Equipment Protection (TEP) service to iPhone customers, Sprint appears to have turned over a new leaf. An anonymous tipster has shared an internal screenshot with us noting that starting on January 25th, the carrier will start allowing its iPhone users to select TEP as an equipment insurance option. Similar to its policy with AppleCare+, Sprint will give customers 30 days from the date of purchase to ad

The many cases of CES 2013

Every year I walk the halls of CES snapping pics of the myriad iDevice cases offered from numerous vendors. I chuckle when I see the "no pictures" sign, as clearly someone was worried the charm would wear off were potential customers to see a picture of a product outside the auspices of a proper product shot. I lump those folks in the "no clue" department, but I'll have more ruminations on CES (and why it actually still does matter) later. For now, enjoy this random lineup of varied cases.
