Apple seeds Mountain Lion Developer Preview 2
Apple finished the week with a post to its developer page for Mountain Lion Developer Preview 2. Build 12A154Q is primarily meant to address earlier flaws and doesn't specifically outline what's new or fixed. The build is clearly unfinished, however, and is currently missing 32-bit kernel extension support, a large number of Game Center features, limited Notes support, and issues with NVIDIA graphics drivers, DVD Player, and limited Recovery Partition features.

Intel drops $21 million for ten percent stake in eye-tracking firm Tobii
Tobii has managed to impress quite a few folks with its eye-tracking technology -- most recently in the form of the "Eye Asteroids" arcade game -- and it looks like Intel has been paying particularly close attention to the company. As Computer Sweden reports, Intel (or Intel Capital, specifically) has now shelled out roughly $21 million to buy a ten percent stake in the Swedish company, which hopes to soon see its eye-tracking system used in everything from desktops and laptops to phones and even vehicles. New iPad parts cost more than its predecessors
Hot on the heels of iFixit's wonderful tear down of the new iPad is a component analysis from the Wall Street Journal. According to their calculations, parts for the new iPad with 4G total US$309. That's about $30 more than the iPad 2 which costs $276.27 and the original iPad 3G which totals $270.86.
This extra cost is likely due to the retina display and the 4G LTE chipset, both of which are unique to the new iPad. Which leads us to the question - was Apple wise to up the cost of components and cut its margin in order to give consumers a tablet with a faster wireless internet connection and a gorgeous display?

T-Mobile retires Sidekick 4G, but brand will return
While the fires that burn inside the hearts of Sidekick fans will probably never go out, the venerable Android slider is being put out to graze. T-Mobile announced last week that the Sidekick 4G was to be discontinued, but it's now added that it's not leaving that pervasive brand behind. In a statement to The Verge, the carrier affirmed that there would be future devices, but didn't reveal anything more substantive on new handsets in the pipeline. We'll keep twiddling our QWERTY-addled thumbs until more details arrive.

Star Walk and Solar Walk updated for the new iPad Retina display
The highly rated astronomy iPad apps from Vito Technology have updates that allow them to display the heavens and our solar system in dazzling high definition for owners of the new iPad. Star Walk (US $4.99) is a fully animated guide to the night sky with a database of more than 20,000 objects. With the Retina display update, everything from details to the amount of items displayed on-screen at once is dramatically increased. Star Walk has also added more than 200,000 objects on screen, compared to 10,000 on the original iPad and iPad2. There are also new high resolution pictures of the day.

Views of new iPad videos outpacing original, iPad 2
Each year, the iPad is capturing the attention of a growing number of people. You can see it in the press coverage that's dedicated to the device, the amount of people using it in public and in the number people who've watched Apple's iPad videos on YouTube. According to AdAge, the original iPad video campaign accrued 2.5 million views in a week, while the iPad 2 climbed to 2.7 million. In the same amount of time, the third generation iPad has grabbed 2.8 million.

SpaceX Dragon will dock with the ISS in May, for realsies this time
SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell has announced that the company's Dragon craft has a NASA-approved date to dock with the International Space Station. With the original mission postponed from November last year, it's now penciled in for launch on April 30th, arriving at the ISS's front door on May 3rd, packed to the gills with fresh supplies. Motorola ban on Apple push data upheld in Germany
Apple's appeal to the ban of push notifications in Germany after a legal spat with Motorola fell on deaf ears this past Wednesday. The ban will continue for a time of at least one year, keeping Apple legally prohibited from using its push notification feature for its iCloud and outgoing MobileMe services. The Karlsruhe Higher Regional Court made the ruling, supporting Motorola's claim to the patent related to push e-mail notifications.

Dell exec: our Windows 8 tablets better for work than iPads
Dell's chief commercial officer Steve Felice in a sweeping interview on Friday tried to downplay the effect of the iPad, and Apple as a whole, at work. He contended to Reuters that iPads and iPhones still raised "a lot of concerns" in the corporate world, where compatibility with the rest of the office, device management, and security might still be problems. Dell would be in the "best position to meet those," he said, although Felice didn't say how his company would be different from other Windows supporters.

Grove announces new bamboo and felt iPad sleeves
Oregon company Grove is a purveyor of beautifully made Apple accessories, and they've had a big couple of weeks. On launch day for the new iPad, they announced their new iPad cases, a bamboo shell-style back with a felt or leather cover. Today, Grove released their new wool felt sleeve, a gorgeous mix of bamboo and wool felt that will do that new iPad of yours justice. I have laid hands on these myself, and the mix of texture and design is wonderful and in a really well built product to boot.
But it doesn't stop there, one of the nice things about opting for sleeve-style protection is that a small change in the dimensions of the device usually doesn't keep you from using the new device with your old sleeve.

ZTE breaks 100Gbps fiber transmission speed barrier
Chinese Telecommunications equipment maker ZTE has successfully field demonstrated the ability to send data over a single fiber optic cable at aggregated speeds of 1.7Tb/s (Terabits). The accomplishment could foreshadow backbone optical networks running at speeds of 200Gbps. Currently the fastest commercial networks providing support for the Internet operate at 100Gb/s.

Third-gen already jailbroken, 'no ETA' on public tool
The third-generation iPad -- launched earlier today -- has already been jailbroken, according to iOS hacker MuscleNerd. Screenshots posted on Twitter are said to depict the new iPad running unofficial code such as Cydia. Cydia is the predominant method of distributing apps to jailbroken devices.

Pro baseball players and staff eager for new iPad
Major League Baseball spring training is well underway, and the 2012 season starts up in less than two weeks. We're anxious for the first pitch on opening day, but USA Today is reporting that MLB players and staff are excited about today's "season opener" for the new iPad.

Flipboard gets sought-after Retina Display update for iPad
Flipboard stood out in the chorus of companies updating to take advantage of the new iPad with an update to its own title (App Store). China may ship more smartphones than the the US this year
The rapid modernization of China shouldn't really come as a shock anymore. But, you might be a bit surprised to hear that the venerable IDC is predicting the world's most populous country will soon surpass the US in smartphone shipments. The research agency is predicting the People's Republic will account for 20.7 percent of the global smartphone market by the end of 2012, narrowly edging out the US by 0.1 percent. Expansion construction begins at Apple's Maiden datacenter
Renewed construction has begun at Apple's datacenter in Maiden, North Carolina, according to local reports. While the main facility has been running for many months, primarily handling iCloud traffic, the Hickory Daily Record notes that part of the site's berm has been demolished for extra construction. A company contracted by Apple, Holder Construction, has also obtained an erosion control permit for over 34 acres at the datacenter, related to "grading for [a] new building."

NPR show pulls Foxconn story, says 'partially fabricated'
NPR show This American Life took the rare step of not just retracting its story on Foxconn's working conditions but devoting an entire episode to the correction. Its earlier episode, "Mr. Daisey Goes to the Factory," was said by the public broadcaster to have been "partially fabricated." Marketplace reporter Rob Schmitz, a figure in the new "Retraction" episode, believed that "much" of Daisey's story had problems.

Track US new iPad adoption in real time
Do you wonder how many new iPads will be lovingly opened and used to browse the Internet today? To find the answer, head to Chitika's website where you will find a tracking page set up for the third generation iPad. As noted by BGR, the tracker looks for both the user agent string of the new iPad and the tablet's unique display resolution of 2,048 x 1,536.
Right now, the new iPad is sitting at 0.875 percent, which is what you would expect for a brand new device. Looking forward, it will interesting to see how quickly its percentage climbs.

Samsung shareholders approve spin-off of LCD business
It's been less than a month since Samsung confirmed that it would be spinning-off its LCD business into a separate company, and it looks like things are proceeding along speedily. The company's shareholders have now approved the spin-off, paving the way for the tentatively-titled Samsung Display Co. to come into existence on April 1st. Samsung Electronics will have a 100 percent stake in that company, and the current executive vice president of its LCD business, Park Dong-gun, will take on the position of president in the new firm. 'This American Life' issues retraction episode over FoxConn report
This American Life is airing a new episode today titled "Retraction." The title and show are a direct response to January 6th edition of the popular public radio show titled "Mr. Daisey and the Apple Factory," an adaptation of a one-man show that helped put Cupertino's involvement with Foxconn back in the public spotlight. New iPad data not carrier-locked, runs AT&T 3G on Verizon
New experiments from a MacRumors forum member has confirmed that the new iPad's cellualr access isn't carrier-locked. Although frequency differences prevent LTE access, a Verizon iPad will use an AT&T micro-SIM to connect at HSPA+ speeds. The change requires changing APN (network profile) settings, but it doesn't require jailbreaks or forced unlocks.

UBS, Oppenheimer join firms raising Apple stock targets
Two more Apple analysts have raised their targets for Apple stock. Oppenheimer & Co.'s Ittai Kidron has adjusted his call from $570 to $700, suggesting that the launch of the new iPad "looks to be very strong," and that "checks" of iPhone 4S sales are "consistently positive." Verizon iPad running with AT&T SIM installed
Over at the MacRumors forums, reader jsnuff1 has confirmed that the new Verizon iPad works with AT&T's 3G network. The Verizon iPad has a built-in GSM SIM slot and supports connections on the same 850/900/1800/1900 MHz bands as the AT&T unit.

Google to end support for cookie-free log-ins on mobile devices
Chances are this won't affect you but, just in case, we figured we'd give you a little heads up -- Google will soon end app support for mobile browsers that don't support cookies. This primarily means that older phones, most of them in Japan as the web giant points out, will no longer be able to log in to Google services. Some, like search and Maps, which don't require you to log in, will still be available through the aging browsers, but things like Calendar will not. The change will go into effect on May 1st, so, if you're still using a six-year-old flip phone to check your Gmail -- it might be time for an upgrade.

Apple tops J.D. Power customer survey 7 years running
J.D. Power and Associates is a well-known provider of customer satisfaction survey data, often known for providing those shiny award statues to automobile manufacturers. Well, they also do surveys of smartphone and traditional mobile phone customers, and for the seventh year in a row, Apple is at the top of the list for customer satisfaction.
In a report subtitled "Smartphone battery life has become a significant drain on customer satisfaction and loyalty," Apple ended up with an index ranking of 839 points out of 1,000 total and a JDPower.com Power Circle score of a perfect five. Samsung NX20 WiFi gets unofficial reveal
Dutch site Focus Media got its hand on Samsung's new mirrorless camera. While it's labeled up as pre-production model, that didn't stop it getting the once-over. A larger frame than the existing NX11 apparently makes space for a new 20.3-megapixel APS-C sensor now capable of 1080p video. Nokia applies for skin-friendly haptic material patent, hints at notification system
If US patent application 20120062371 is to be correctly understood, Nokia has at least thought about a topical haptic notification system. The first claim covers "An apparatus comprising: a material attachable to skin, the material capable of detecting a magnetic field and transferring a perceivable stimulus to the skin, wherein the perceivable stimulus relates to the magnetic field." Bei iPhone 4 und iPhone 4S sind die einzelnen Pixel mit bloßem Auge kaum noch zu erkennen, beim iPad der dritten Generation muss man zumindest sehr genau darauf achten, um noch einzelne Pixel zu sehen. Die Pixeldichte des neuen iPads fällt nicht so hoch wie die eines iPhone 4/4S aus; im Alltag ist dies aber nicht problematisch, da der Abstand des Displays zum Auge bei normaler Verwendung auch größer ist, als wenn man ein iPhone bedient.

Preparing Hong Kong Apple Store for iPad launch
M.I.C. Gadget has the inside details (and lots of photos) on the Hong Kong launch of the iPad. Unlike the US, UK and other countries which sold on a first-come, first-served basis, Hong Kong was selling the iPad using a reservation system. Customers must sign up for an iPad the night before and wait for an email with a time to come and pick up their tablet.
Some people, mostly scalpers, are hovering outside, hoping Apple will sell them an iPad, but they are getting turned away. M.I.C. Daily iPad App: Zuma's Revenge HD arrives on iOS from PopCap
Zuma's Revenge is a nice game from PopCap. It's a colorful, casual, action/puzzle title, with a simple mechanic that's easy to understand. But don't get too comfortable, as Zuma's Revenge gets difficult quickly. It's existed as a PC title for a while, and is finally ready for iOS.
Shooting little colored balls into each other is fun, and the game's great Aztec-inspired theme adds to it. It's a deep game despite the simple mechanic. You can fire balls into a gap for bonus points and figure out how to finish off the line of orbs as quickly as possible.
Zuma's Revenge HD is a no-brainer as a great game from a company with a shining reputation for games just like this. The only concern (other than the lack of Retina gr

Sprint formally ends LightSquared 4G deal, open to return
Sprint on Friday lived up to rumors and ended its LightSquared deal. The carrier decided against more than a second extension on the 4G startup's attempts to get its LTE network started. As part of the "contingencies" related to backtracking on the deal, Sprint would pay back the $65 million LightSquared had given to cover costs in advance, which Sprint said hadn't been used yet.

German court halts Apple's second slide-to-unlock case against Samsung
The Mannheim Court in Germany has delayed Apple's second slide-to-unlock case against Samsung, says FOSS Patents. During this pause in proceedings, the German Patent and Trademark Office is examining the validity of Apple's slide-to-unlock utility model.
A utility model is a quickly-approved patent that's not presumed by the court to be valid because it hasn't been fully examined by the patent office. Now that Apple is asserting it in a lawsuit, the patent office is taking a closer look at the patent and Apple's claims. This review process takes time and other appeals could delay a final ruling in this slide-to-unlock case.

Sprint to LightSquared: it's over
The writing's been on the wall for a few weeks and now Sprint's officially severing its partnership with LightSquared. Philip Falcone's project had a contractual deadline of March 15th to gain regulatory approval for its LTE service on the 1.6GHz spectrum, which was shot down by the FCC in February. Microsoft schickt konvertierte IE-Uninstaller auf die Couch

Keine Frage, die Situation kennt jeder. Man erwischt einen Rechner mit Internet Explorer und installiert erst mal einen neuen Browser. Das hat auch Microsoft begriffen und jetzt eine Kampagne gestartet, die sich etwas selbstironisch "The Browser You Loved To Hate" nennt. Damit sollt ihr natürlich überzeugt werden, dass IE wirklich nicht mehr so schlecht ist wie sein ruf, aber ob das wirklich dazu führt, dass man in Zukunft gemeinsam mit Microsoft lacht, oder immer noch lieber über IE, ist noch nicht abzuschätzen, denn eigentlich kann man das Video nach dem Break auch so lesen, dass, wer IE nicht mehr ersetzt, wirklich eine Macke haben muss.

Apple TV: Erste Pakete treffen bei den Bestellern ein
Heute ist nicht nur iPad-, sondern auch Apple-TV-Tag. Drehte sich in den vergangenen Tagen in der Apple-Welt alles ums neue iPad, darf man auch den neuen Apple TV nicht vergessen, der ebenfalls seit heute verfügbar ist.
Aus den USA gibt es bereits erste Meldungen von eingetroffenen Apple TVs, die via FedEx dem Kunden zugestellt wurden. Die Tracking-Informationen zeigen, dass die meisten Vorgänge für die Auslieferung am 15. März stattgefunden haben. Ähnliches war auch bei deutschen iPad-Bestellungen zu beobachten, die via Hermes zugestellt wurden. Waren lange Zeit keine Details über die Bestellung einsehbar, haben sich die Trackinginformationen in den vergangenen 12 Stunden quasi überschlagen.

Endlich hat PayPal mal die Konkurrenz gesehen und eine eigene Version eines mobilen Add-Ons für iPhone nachgeliefert, die Square vor drei Jahren schon eingeführt hatte. Damit kann man offline Zahlungen annehmen kann. Die Hardware soll es zunächst mal in den USA, Kanada, Hongkong und Australien geben. Und, das könnte der große Vorteil sein, sie ist umsonst. German court freezes newer Apple unlock lawsuit vs. Samsung
Apple was handed a possibly major setback Friday as its second slide-to-unlock lawsuit in Germany was put on hold. The Mannheim court's Judge Andreas Voss was unconvinced that the design model Apple was wielding against Samsung was necessarily valid. He determined that Apple should wait until Germany's Patent and Trademark Office had decided in a simultaneous case whether or not the design model was valid before moving ahead.

Sie haben ein Qualcomm MDM6900 LTE gefunden und Apple benutzt jetzt ein Package-on-Package System mit dem A5X SoX mit zwei Sparaten DRAM. Slim MacBook Pro said already in production, no 17-inch seen
The often-rumored slim MacBook Pro may already be in production, but only in smaller models. Rumors from part suppliers speaking to Digitimes had 13- and 15-inch models coming in an initial batch of 100,000 to 150,000 units a month, but no mention of a 17-inch system. Neues iPad: Aufladen der Batterie dauert deutlich länger
Ein Retina Display, ein im Prozessor integrierter Quad-Core-Grafikchip – die Neuerungen des neuen iPad überzeugen, doch sie sorgen auch für einen höheren Stromverbrauch. Dennoch ist die Batterielaufzeit konstant geblieben. Der dafür notwendige 42,5-Wattstunden-Akku braucht als Nachteil aber deutlich mehr Zeit, bis er aufgeladen ist.
Ersten Erfahrungsberichten zufolge müssen die Besitzer eines neuen iPad deutlich mehr Zeit einplanen, um die Batterie vollständig aufzuladen. Laut TechCrunch sind es “mehrere Stunden”, die der Vorgang zusätzlich dauert. Man sollte das Gerät daher am besten immer nachts aufladen. Eine genaue Zeitangabe verrät die Seite allerdings nicht.

Nicken als Input: Sony mit Kopfkontrolle für Handys
Endlich mal ein Patent das wir sofort nachvollziehen können. Auf dem Xperia Sola wird ja schon ein wenig mehr Freiheit von der Hand gefordert, das Patent was SonyEricsson (so hiessen die damals noch, falls ihr euch nicht erinnert) beantragt hat, geht einen Schritt weiter. Damit kann man über ein Bluetooth-Add-On mit Bewegungssensor bestimmte Kopfgesten an das Smartphone binden und so mit einem Nicken Abnehmen, oder einer 360°-Drehung des Kopfes die schärfste Pizza unter der Sonne bestellen. So ganz ist das Patent noch nicht bestätigt worden, aber wir hoffen drauf.

Kickstarter-funded PXL Magazine debuts on the iPad
Randy Nelson is a former colleague of mine over at Joystiq, and he stepped away from our gaming-focused sister site last year to follow his own path. Part of that path includes a new gaming magazine project called PXL, which Nelson posted on Kickstarter back in January. You can already watch TED talks on any number of devices via the web or the various apps available, but the oft-debated conference / organization has now added another fairly big feather to its cap: it's streaming on Netflix. Daily iPhone App: Bitter Sam drops down into the depths
Bitter Sam is an interesting title, not necessarily because of its mechanics (it's basically a tilting avoidance title), but just because it's so unapologetically quirky. You play as a little kid named Sam, who swings back and forth on a rope as he's systematically lowered deeper and deeper into more and more dangerous levels. It's such a weird little premise for a game that I have to recommend it.
Not that the gameplay is bad -- you swing Sam back and forth, basically trying to avoid dangerous obstacles, while also trying to collect gems as you go further and further, across 5 different worlds and over 100 different levels. The BBC plans an iTunes competitor for UK media consumers
In a bit of a surprise move, the British Broadcasting Corporation announced it was planning an iTunes-style downloading service that would allow viewers to get recent or archived broadcasts from a BBC online store for a fee.
Reuters reports the software, code named Project Barcelona, would allow viewers to buy BBC programming for what was termed a "modest fee."
BBC Director General Mark Thompson did not specify a time of release or pricing. Thomson says the software will be like going into a store and buying a DVD. It's expected such a service would be a potential rival for iTunes and other content suppliers. Many BBC programs are offered on iTunes

PayPal unveils competitor to Square's credit card reader
EBay-owned payment giant PayPal is looking to further expand its presence beyond online transactions, and announced on Thursday it will be introducing a credit card-reading smartphone attachment aimed at small retailers that will be in direct competition with existing solutions like Square.

App Store, Infinity Blade II get Retina-ready iPad updates
Last-minute prep for the new iPad's North American launch has seen Apple create a new sub-section (App Store) for the new iPad. The new sub-section, just known as "Great Apps for the new iPad," currently includes about two dozen apps optimized for the new iPad's much higher-resolution screen. Among the examples are Flight Control Rocket, Sketchbook Pro, and Tweetbot.

MacBook Air: 15-Zoll-Variante ab April erhältlich?
Laut einem aktuellen Bericht wird Apple die Produktlinie des beliebten MacBook Air um ein größeres Modell mit einem 15-Zoll-Display erweitern. Im Zuge dessen heißt es weiterhin, dass der MacBook Pro-Serie das baldige Aus droht. A new company called Element Case has debuted its Vapor charging and syncing dock for iPhone and iPod devices, made out of precision-machined aluminum that offers features beyond basic charging and syncing, including hidden cable management and tiny holes and air chambers that work to amplify the docked device's small speakers. The stand accepts both cased and uncased iPhones or iPods that use the 30-pin dock connector.

Hulu video player gets a 'big picture' update, now 55 percent larger
Not a fan of giving up screen real estate to make room for a fresh episode of Alcatraz? Hulu's got your back (or in this case those eagle eyes of yours). Via its blog site, the Plus creator announced a minor but "big picture" refresh to its web video player. The update, along with the 55 percent size increase to the browser picture box, also brings a new frame and drop shadow to blend with the novel player. Briefly: Combat Mission coming to Mac, Pogue's Lion guide
Battlefront.com has announced the upcoming release of a Mac version of Combat Mission: Shock Force, its tactical ground combat simulation that includes both real-time and turn-based gameplay. The new Mac version is fully compatible with OS X 10.6 and higher, and includes the original base game as well as three expansion packs. The game will be available for both download, and mail delivery starting at $45 plus shipping and handling in 6-8 weeks. Meanwhile, pre-orders will start to be accepted in 1-2 weeks.

Apple protest planned for iPad launch at Georgetown store
Continuing to protest what it sees as improving but still incomplete policies regarding worker protection against abuse and injury at the Chinese plants that manufacture Apple and other tech company's products, supports of the Change.org Apple initiative are planning a protest outside the company's Georgetown store tomorrow as the new iPad launches.
