DOJ clears Google buyout of Motorola, Nortel patent sale

The US Department of Justice in a brief said it had approved both Google's acquisition of Motorola and the joint purchase of Nortel patents by Apple, Microsoft, RIM, and others. Antitrust regulators in both cases had decided it was "unlikely" that the deals would hurt competition. It was partly reassured by Apple, Google, and Microsoft all promising to license standards-based patents based on FRAND (fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory) terms.

VLC hits version 2.0: brings presents to all the plaforms

Open-source friend to all the video codecs, VLC media player, has hit version 2.0, bringing with it a raft of new features across Mac OS, Windows and Unix versions. VideoLAN's also brought the player kicking and screaming into this decade with a better (read; less Windows 98-looking) makeover. Apple launches 2012 back-to-school promo for Japan

NPD: Apple generates a fifth of all US electronics revenue

Apple looking to 'quadruple' India spending

Apple is aiming to "quadruple" the amount of money it spends in India, claims local publication The Economic Times. Canon C300 takes to the sky, hopefully still under warranty

Xyologic: Google TV users under 4.8m, few download new apps

Mobile analysis firm Xyologic may have gauged the real size of Google TV's user base and shown a problem getting adoption of its support for third-party apps. Of the 64 apps exclusive to the TV-sized platform in Android market, only 4,793,300 people have one or more of these apps installed, making it possibly representative of the entire Google TV base. The number could be lower given that only 4,441,000 have the six preloaded apps on their devices.

Apple has taken first place in a Harris Interactive poll on corporate reputations. The company scored a quotient of 85.63, giving it enough to beat out last year's winner, Google, which in the new poll has claimed second place with 82.82. iCal: Debug-Menu + 24 zusätzliche Tweaks aktivieren

Wir sind heute auf einen interessanten Tweak gestoßen: Das Debug-Menu in iCal aktivieren. Auch für Otto-Normal-Verbraucher sehr interessant: Denn mit dem Debug-Menu kann man weitere 24 Einstellungen vornehmen, die ansonsten verborgen bleiben. Als Beispiel kann man mit [cmd]+[L] bis zu sieben weitere iCal-Fenster öffnen, die Anzahl der anzuzeigenden Wochen und Monate sowie angezeigten Tage in der Wochenansicht ändern. Das “Freischalten” geht spielend: 1. Öffnet das Terminal (/Programme/Dienstprogramme/Terminal). 2. Folgenden Befehl mit der [Enter]-Taste bestätigen: defaults write com.apple.iCal IncludeDebugMenu 1 Ausschalten kann man den Debug-Modus mit folgendem Befehl: defaults write com.apple.iCal IncludeDebugMenu 0   Viel Spass!

Daily Mac App: Simple Skip Tunes feels like it should be part of OS X

We've tested a few menubar music remotes in the past, and there's not that much difference among them. What makes Skip Tunes different is its simplicity. It operates on the minimalist principle. It controls iTunes, Spotify or Rdio. Instead of getting a lengthy menu like with some apps, Skip Tunes displays the album cover, what song is playing, and controls. That's it. The controls are the same that you get on the stock Apple keyboard, but it looks good. That's enough to satisfy those who go for the smaller visual footprints. It's a great way to see what song/album is currently playing without having to go back into an app, and you can toggle the ability to see the controls in the menubar. Iran blocking access to Google's encrypted search, YouTube, and webmail

Iran has restricted access to the internet for years now, but it seems the land of Persia is clamping down even further on its citizens' ability to surf the web as they wish. VLC 2.0 to get Blu-ray support in OS X, 64-bit in Windows

VideoLAN says it is working on a major v2.0 update of VLC, the group's free, open-source media player software. The project is described as a complete rewrite, one which will add major features to different platforms. The Mac version, for instance, will gain Blu-ray playback, a native fullscreen mode in Lion, and an overhauled interface, closer in appearance to iTunes. EU clears Google buyout of Motorola

As anticipated, the European Commission on Monday approved Google's $12.5 billion buyout of Motorola. The approval was without conditions after the EU body decided that it wouldn't hurt smartphone competition or patent issues. Commissioner Joaquin Almunia was aware there was a chance Google might abuse patents to shelter Android, but he promised legal action if that was the case.

Apple opens up inspection of its Foxconn plants to Fair Labor Association

One of Apple's major manufacturing cogs, Foxconn, will receive voluntary audits from the Fair Labor Association on factories in both Shenzhen and Chengdu in China. These inspections have already began earlier today over in Foxconn City. It will involved polling "thousands" of employees covering both their working and living conditions, while facilities are also The FLA's team will inspect manufacturing areas, dormitories and sift through all the required employment documents, with findings published in March. In total, the assessment will cover more than 90 percent of Apple's assembly locations, and follows its self-published supplier responsibility report. Rumor: Pegatron squeezed by Apple on ASUS Zenbook production

A tentative rumor has had Pegatron allegedly forced to choose between manufacturing ASUS' Zenbooks and Apple's iOS devices. Taiwan's Commercial Times had heard that Apple was supposedly unhappy with the similarity to the MacBook Air and didn't want one of its own contractors to be making what was perceived to be a clone. We've seen countless robotics projects made either partly or entirely out of Lego, but this pneumatic arm built by Max Sheppard has to rank among the most impressive. As you can see in the video above, while it may be a bit on the slow side, the arm's range of motion is remarkably life-like (even by non-Lego standards). It's also able to grip objects of different sizes, and with enough precision to pour water out of a cup, although Sheppard says it can't lift anything more than a couple of pounds. Patentkrieg gegen Android: Apple verklagt Samsung wegen Galaxy Nexus

Mit der Klage vor dem US-Bundesgericht in San Jose in Kalifornien wehrt sich Apple gegen mehrere mutmaßliche Patentverletzungen durch das Samsung-Smartphone. Unter anderem sieht Apple das eigene geistige Eigentum dadurch verletzt, dass sich das Galaxy Nexus ebenso wie ein iPhone durch Fingerwisch “entriegeln” lässt. Auch sieht Apple eine Patentverletzung in einer Funktion, die ähnlich wie Apples Spracherkennungs-Assistent Siri eine Internet-Suche per Sprachkommando ermöglicht. Apple TV: Hinweise für neues Modell

In den Einstellungsdaten der iOS-5.1-Betas befinden sich laut 9 to 5 Mac Einträge für das Apple-Produkt “J33″. Während das Produkt “J2″ das neue iPad sein soll, könnte es sich beim “J33″ um das neue Apple TV handeln. An anderer Stelle nehmen die Beta-Versionen auch Bezug aufs “AppleTV3,1″. Auch zitiert die Website eine nicht näher benannte Quelle beim US-Elektronikhändler Best Buy. iPad seen hitting 1m in Korea as Galaxy Tab stays a minority

Industry insider estimates have claimed that the iPad 2 has reached the million-unit sales mark in South Korea. The milestone came after a late November 2010 launch and 700,000 iPads shipped just in 2011, leaving the remaining 300,000 to have been sold in two and a half months' time, the Korea Herald said.
