Some Apple TV users unable to access YouTube content
A number of Apple TV owners are finding it impossible to view YouTube videos, according to complaints on Apple's support forums. Affected people will see an error message: "No content was found. There is a problem communicating with YouTube. Try again later." The issue appears to be affecting countries worldwide, including Argentina, Australia, Japan, Canada, the US, the UK, and at least parts of continental Europe such as Spain and Denmark.

Netflix profit shrinks in wake of price, Qwikster fiascos
Netflix saw the fuller consequences of its more controversial decisions on Wednesday with results from the fall. The company added more streaming customers than it expected, 220,000, but the "continued impact" of its price hike for those keeping DVDs and streaming led to it shedding 2.76 million disc subscriptions. These, along with the costs of expansion outside of the US, dragged Netflix's profit down 13 percent year over year to $41 million.

Netflix Q4 results: 220k new customers, beats earnings estimates
Netflix's Q4 2011 earnings report is in, and the company indicates its streaming subscriber count is now 21.67 million. This closes out a tough 2011 that saw its subscriber count drop by 800k in Q3, and most recently resulted in the search for a new Chief Marketing Officer. The company exceeded its own targets for growth in streaming customers and domestically, the segment reported a higher-than-expected profit of $52 million. Concerns mount that jailbreaking may become illegal
The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) is lobbying users to sign a petition in its quest to convince the US government that jailbreaking smartphones and tablets is legal. Back in mid-2010, the Library of Congress ruled that the act is legal, provided it doesn't violate copyright laws. That ruling will soon expire, some believe, and doesn't cover tablets; the EFF is concerned that both need to be address.

Belfry brings Stocks and Weather, other native iPhone apps to jailbroken iPads
Rounding out the honeymoon period with that freshly jailbroken iPad 2? Well now we have some new apps for you to play with, and you may already be acquainted. iOS hacker Ryan Petrich's most recent project, dubbed Belfry, lets you install stock iPhone apps that are otherwise absent from both versions of Apple's tablet including Clock, Voice Memos, Stocks, Calculator, Compass and Weather. Motorola sues Apple again to take down iPhone 4S, iCloud
Motorola has escalated its countering campaign against Apple with a new lawsuit in Florida. Filed Tuesday but only made public today, the complaint focuses on more recent releases and alleges that both the iPhone 4S and iCloud violate six of its patents. These include basics such as having a hidden external antenna, communicating filtered data, managung use, and a "pager status" sync patent also used in Motorola's German actions.

News: Motorola names iPhone 4S, iCloud in new patent suit

Apple sees 'huge opportunity' in Brazil
Apple's next emerging market might not be in Asia, but in South America. HP unveils Open webOS, makes code swap to allow more devices
HP has acted on its promise to open-source webOS with an important change that could affect the devices that use it. Now called Open webOS, it's moving to a common Linux kernel that will let hardware makers use much more typical drivers and bring it to hardware beyond what HP originally intended. Apple increasing operations in Israel with Anobit, new research center
Apple recently confirmed its purchase of Israeli-based flash memory firm Anobit, and today Israeli business newspaper Calcalist reports [Google translation, subscription required] Apple will open a research center in Haifa this February. Calcalist notes that the research center is not related to the Anobit acquisition, and Anobit employees should not expect to be working there. Speaking of employees, Apple is reportedly seeking engineers with experience in chip development, and has already received "several hundred resumes" from interested hopefuls.

HP: webOS to be fully open-sourced by September, Enyo 2.0 framework available to developers today
When HP announced last month that it would open-source webOS, the outfit seemed mighty pleased (and relieved) to have finally made a definitive decision regarding the fate of its $1.2-billion-dollar software experiment. Apple could have Israeli research center by end of February
Apple is hoping to open a research center in Haifa, Israel by the end of February, local business publication Calcalist reports. The facility will allegedly find its home in the Matam district to the south, in the vicinity of other research centers for companies like Intel and Microsoft. Apple is said to have already received "several hundred" resumes for a variety chip engineering positions, with a focus on electrical circuits, analogue and hardware testing and verification.

Results of Thailand floods still affecting tech industry
Last year, Thailand was rocked by floods that devastated the country. It destroyed cities and towns and put a severe dent in Taiwan's manufacturing industry. Hard drive manufacturing was hit the hardest and shortages in the supply of drives started to surface last year. This deficit is impacting tech companies from Western Digital to Intel and AMD. According to Macworld, Western Digital recorded US$199 million in charges and expenses from the floods and its hard drive manufacturing plants are still trying to recover. Foxconn worker claims iPhone 5 in preparation for production
An iPhone 5 is being prepared for production, claims a source at Apple's main Chinese manufacturing partner, Foxconn. The person adds that several non-final sample devices are currently in circulation, each varying slightly. All of them, though, are said to be longer and wider than the iPhone 4S, use a 4-inch display, and have neither the 4S form factor nor the teardrop shape sometimes rumored prior to the 4S' launch. O2 UK appears to fix flaw that sent phone numbers by web
O2 UK has quietly solved or at least mitigated a major security breach on Wednesday. Following a discovery by Lewis Peckover that O2 was sending mobile subscribers' phone numbers in the clear through their web browser user agent, O2 claimed that it was cleared up. The company explained that it normally sent phone number information to "certain trusted partners" for age verifications and carrier billing, but this information had started going out to other sites by accident.

Apple seeds seventh 10.7.3 beta to developers
Apple released the seventh beta of Mac OS 10.7.3 (build 11D50) to developers yesterday amid the hubbub of the financial conference call. The update lists no known issues and asks developers to focus on iCloud Document Storage, Address Book, iCal, Mail, Spotlight and Safari. The delta update is a 997.01 MB download while the combo is 1.26 GB in size. The last beta release didn't list known issues, either, so perhaps this update is almost baked and ready. EU details data protection laws, gives nod to Google changes
The European Commission on Wednesday formally outlined its new data protection rules and touched on Google's own decisions. As hinted earlier, the rules would require plain, explicit permission for data, require data portability between services, and enforce a "right to be forgotten" for those who want to purge their data entirely. If a company saw a breach of information, they had 24 hours in most circumstances to notify both the regulators of affected countries and the European citizens they affected.

A conversation with Samsung product marketing manager Ryan Bidan late Tuesday has hinted that the next Galaxy Tab line may make interface a core selling point with a possible return to the early days of tablets. Pocket Universe has been one of my favorite astronomy apps for the iPhone. Take it outside to easily identify what's up using the charts and the built-in augmented reality features. With an update that hit the app store yesterday, you can now talk to Pocket Universe, using Siri speech recognition by tapping on the microphone icon on the built-in keyboard. You can say things like "Where is Jupiter?" or "What is the phase of the moon?" and so forth. I tried several queries like, "What time does Mars rise?" and "Find M42 in Orion." Apple ist weiter auf Rekordjagd: So lassen sich die Ergebnisse der am Dienstag vorgelegten Quartalszahlen am besten zusammenfassen. Nie zuvor konnte Apple solche Umsätze und Gewinne verbuchen, wie im zurückliegenden Weihnachtsquartal. Die Verkaufszahlen von iPhone und iPad stechen besonders heraus.
Noch vor einem Jahr verdiente Apple im Schlussquartal 6 Milliarden Dollar. Dieser Nettogewinn hat sich nun auf rund 13 Milliarden Dollar Gewinn mehr als verdoppelt. Genauer gesagt entspricht das einer Steigerung um 118 Prozent.

Der Designer Hsu Sean hat eine "Disperse" getaufte Struktur entworfen, die Straßenschlachten entschärfen soll, indem Rowdies in einem Drehtürirrgarten in Mobilklooptik separiert werden, bzw. sich beruhigen sollen, während und weil sie durch die Schleusenanlage gehen. Das Konzept beruht offensichtlich auf einem arg mechanistisch-naiven Verständnis von der Crowd Controll im Krawallfall, mal abgesehen davon, dass die Ordnungshüter eigentlich immer bemüht sind, die Straßen frei zu halten und abgebrühte Militante Barrikaden eigentlich recht nützlich finden. Fazit: schade aber toll.

NimbleBit calls out Zynga clone of Tiny Tower
Zynga, which has made its fortune on Farmville, has released an app in Canada (not on the American App Store yet) called Dream Heights, which bears much more than a passing resemblance to Tiny Tower, a terrific and very successful freemium game from NimbleBit (the brothers-run company that we've posted about a few times before). Q4 data shows that iPhone beat out all Android phones
Research firm Kantar Worldpanel has found that the huge demand for Appleís iPhones in Q4, driven by the arrival of the Siri-toting iPhone 4S, has catapulted Apple past the combined sales of all Google Android-powered smartphones over the same period. According to the data, Appleís share of the critical US market doubled year-over-year for the quarter just passed to 44.9 percent. This just beat out Google Android smartphones, which dropped from a 50 percent share to 44.8 percent.

Von dem Scherzkeks aus China, der im folgenden Video das gute alte Steine-übers-Wasser-Hüpfen-Spiel (Flitschen, Ditschen, Steinschnellen, Pfitscheln, Flippen, Klippen, Platteln, Schiefern you name it) mit mehr oder weniger originalen Smartphones probiert, kann man wohl nur eines lernen: die Dinger eignen sich dafür eher mal nicht. Neues Quartal, neuer Rekord: Apple hat im 1. Quartal 46,33 Milliarden Dollar Umsatz gemacht. Das ist beinahe doppelt so viel wie letztes Jahr zur gleichen Zeit und beinahe zwanig prozent mehr, als die meisten Analysten erwartet hatten. Verkauft wurden 15,4 Millionen iPads, genauso viele iPods, 5,2 Millionen Macs und vor allem 37 Millionen iPhones (128 Prozent mehr als letztes Jahr), die zusammen mit Zubehör für den Löwenanteil des Umsatzes gesorgt haben. Das bringt die Gesamtersparnisse auf 97 Milliarden, genug um auch ein (nicht erwartetes) schlechtes zweites Quartal auszuhalten.

A week after the last release, Apple has again posted a new beta of the upcoming Mac OS X 10.7.3 for developers. Nicht nur für das MacBook Pro von 2010 hat Apple eine spezielle Recovery-Firmware veröffentlicht, auch das mittlerweile eingestellt klassische MacBook sowie die älteren Mac mini von 2010 wurden mit einer neuen Firmware bedacht. The network we love to hate has made it a long way in the four years since we promised to never cover it again because of its ridiculous claims. Apple Stores' EasyPay checkout, in-store pickup help growth
Apple CEO Tim Cook has credited the company's recent retail innovations, which include the online option of in-store pickup of purchases as well as a new self-checkout option that incorporates into the stores' EasyPay system with an eponymous iOS app, with helping Apple Stores see significant jumps in visitors and revenue across 2011. Sony claims to lead UK's non-iPad tablet share
Sony staked out an odd consolation prize Tuesday for tablet market share. It pointed to GfK data that showed the Tablet S and Tablet P as the most popular Android tablets in the UK at least as of October, the combination of the two amounting to 26 percent of the market. Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom has been denied bail by a New Zealand court. The presiding judge, David McNaughton, accepted prosecution arguments that Dotcom posed a flight risk and remanded him in custody until February 22. iOS' 315m devices keeps Android's 250m at bay for now
Apple as part of its fall fiscal results revealed that a total of 315 million iOS devices had been activated in the platform's 4.5-year history. The marker included the over 62 million devices shipped just in the fall alone. Total 2011 iPhone sales by themselves were strong enough to outsell those from the previous four years combined.

Sprint's move to roaming agreements sends AT&T to angry town
Despite all Sprint's efforts to promote its Network Vision plans, the carrier has been much more coy about its intentions for subscribers in the rural midwest. Cook: iCloud a massive hit, 'strategy for the next decade'
One revelation from Apple CEO Tim Cook that has largely escaped investor and analyst notice in today's conference call was the remarkable success of iCloud, which now has 85 million users in just a bit over three months. Clearwire flips to profit, adds customers as LTE underway
Clearwire on Tuesday showed a significant recovery from near death with early estimates of its results. It swung from a loss in the summer to net positive earnings in the fall, owed directly to adding more subscribers and cost-cutting. NVIDIA sees trouble in PCs, non-iPads with lowered outlook
NVIDIA gave further clues of PC revenue decline with its own outlook warning. It expected its revenue for the quarter ending in January to be $950 million, or $166 million lower than what it had predicted in the fall. It blamed hard drive shortages for a ripple effect, where the inability to ship enough PCs meant that they either couldn't ship PCs at all or had to sacrifice a graphics card for a more expensive hard drive.

Apple Q1 results hit $46.33B in revenue, top forecasts
Apple has announced the results of its first fiscal quarter, which ended December 31st. The company is reporting a massive $46.33 billion in revenue, with a net profit of $13.06 billion, or $13.87 per diluted share. In comparison, Apple achieved revenue of just $26.74 billion in Q1 2011, with a net profit of $6 billion, or $6.43 per diluted share.

Apple stock surges 9 percent on record earnings
Appleís stock surged by 9 percent following its record quarterly earnings on what is the second highest quarterly earnings result in US corporate history - only ExxonMobil has recorded more income for a quarter back in 2008 when oil prices were at record levels. What's Apple going to do with $97 billion in cash?
During its earnings conference call, Apple confirmed the company is sitting on a treasure chest of US$97.6 billion. This stack of cash is steadily growing, up from $81.6 billion at the end of the September quarter. With all that money in the bank, you can't help but wonder what's Apple going to with it all? AMD reports a net loss for Q4 2011, 30 million APUs sold last year
As the quarterly earnings train rolls along, AMD has announced its results for the last three months of 2011, with weaker than expected sales resulting in a net loss of $177 million on revenue of $1.69 billion. Mac largely unfazed by hard drive shortages, Apple says
Last year's flooding of hard drive factories in Thailand had no material effect on cost or supply for Apple's first fiscal quarter, according to CEO Tim Cook. Speaking during a post-results Q&A, Cook added that the company expects no supply problems during the current quarter, although it does anticipate paying more for drives. Researchers develop 'wireless optical brain router' to manipulate brian cells
Optogenetics might be a relatively unknown area of neuroscience, but it's one that, thanks to some new research, could soon find itself (and its rodental subjects) in the spotlight. Kindle Touch gets new software version 5.0.3
It wasn't all that long that the Nook Simple Touch got a bit of freshening up thanks to some new code, and now it's the Kindle Touch's turn for an upgrade. Amazon has just released software version 5.0.3 for its newest e-reader that brings "general software improvements" to the device. Apple: tablets outsold PCs in US, Kindle Fire no big threat
Apple during its fall quarter results revealed IDC data that tablets outsold PCs in the fall. While he didn't provide concrete details, he suggested that the iPad, Android, and other tablet platforms had pushed past the combined Mac and Windows PC markets. IDC's own PC figures showed 18.6 million US computers, making it probable that Apple's 15.4 million plus the smaller share of the rest of the market was enough to push past.

Tim Cook: Tablet market will eventually exceed PC market

"I believe there will come a day when tablet market by unit is larger than the PC market," he said. Apple 'actively' talking uses for $97.6B in cash reserves
Apple is "actively discussing" possible uses for its cash reserves, which have swelled to over $97.6 billion following its Q1 2012 results, according to CFO Peter Oppenheimer. Speaking in a post-results Q&A, Oppenheimer suggested that the company isn't "letting it [the cash] burn a hole" in company pockets, although there aren't any specifics to share yet. iCloud climbs to 85 million users
