Apple pulls 99-cent iTunes TV show rentals

Apple has pulled all US$0.99 TV show rentals from the iTunes Store and Apple TV. As first noticed by AppleInsider, all mention of TV show rentals has also disappeared from Apple's knowledge-base articles. One titled "iTunes Store: How to rent TV shows" has been completely removed, though you can view a cached version of it

Apple pushes new OS X, iCloud, iPhoto builds to developers

Apple has dropped new builds in the mix to developers for OS X, including Lion 10.7.2, and new updates for iCloud and iPhoto. These are of course developer only builds that are designed for testing and usage before they had out to the public at large. The Lion build asks developers to look at the apps AirPort, AppKit, GraphicsDrivers, iCal, iChat, Mac App Store, Mail, Spotlight, and Time Machine, so that's where most of the updates will come from. Apple quietly drops 99-cent TV show rentals from iTunes

Apple has dropped the 99-cent TV show rentals that it used to launch the second-generation Apple TV. Along with dropping the option from the store itself, the Apple TV product page no longer makes mention of the option. Rentals are now limited to movies, and TV shows are back to being purchase-only.

Xsan 2.2.2 fixes filesystem, memory problems

Apple has released Xsan 2.2.2, a rare update to its storage area network software. The patch is specifically labeled the FileSystem Update for 10.6, and fixes problems with filesystem reliability as well as "low-memory client behavior." It applies only to copies of Xsan running on Snow Leopard clients or servers. To go with it, Apple has posted a new Xsan Uninstaller.

More photos of purported next-generation iPhone parts have appeared online, showing a supposed logic board, back plate, camera module, and more. Verizon tops, Sprint and AT&T trail in network quality ranks

JD Power late this week published an updated study that gave Verizon another win in cellular network quality rankings. Mid-2011 MacBook Air reportedly about to launch in China

Fortune's Apple 2.0 is reporting that the mid-2011 MacBook Air (launched just over a month ago in the US) is set to launch in China in the next week or so. According to analyst Brian White of Ticonderoga Securities, this week's Hong Kong launch of the MacBook Air was met with, "long lines and stock outs of certain new MacBook Air models," which is an indication of what's to come when the MacBook Air launches in Greater China. Analyst claims Apple A6 may not ship until June

Senior analyst Kevin Krewell of The Linley Group asserted in a research note that Apple's A6 processor would be relatively late. Citing a Taiwan Economic News article as part of his support, he believed the A6 wouldn't be in full production until spring at the earliest. Apple seeds new OS X 10.7.2, iCloud, iPhoto 9.2 betas

Apple has released new developer seeds for three upcoming Mac updates. The first is OS X 10.7.2, now in build 11C43. The iCloud Lion client has now been advanced to beta 9, while iPhoto 9.2 is in its third beta. Apple warns that installing the latter will replace any existing installation of iPhoto, and that beta 3 will not open libraries created by beta 1. FCC gets enough from AT&T, T-Mobile to continue review

The FCC has now collected enough information to continue its review of the proposed $39 billion T-Mobile buyout by AT&T. The commission had to address many concerns and will now reset its 180-day clock to complete deal reviews. Apple wins again, speeds up Samsung trial to July 30, 2012

Apple continued a string of wins against Samsung in its legal battles by speeding up the trial date for its core lawsuit against Samsung in the US. The Northern District of California court issued an order (below) issued an order setting the trial for July 30, 2012. While half a year later than the February 2012 date Apple had wanted, it would be much earlier than the March 2013 Samsung had suggested by targeting the median date for trial starts.

Carriers worry over Android/iPhone, may return to BlackBerry

RIM may see a bounce back in the market simply out of carrier worries of an Apple and Google duopoly, Sterne Agee analyst Shaw Wu learned on Friday. Mid-2011 MacBook Air reportedly about to launch in China

Fortune's Apple 2.0 is reporting that the mid-2011 MacBook Air (launched just over a month ago in the US) is set to launch in China in the next week or so. MacBook Air sales off to fast start in Hong Kong

The MacBook Air has been selling extremely well in Hong Kong since its debut there this week, says Ticonderoga Securities analyst Brian White. Die Prototypen-Bezeichnung würde stimmen (iPhone 4 hatte die N90, die CDMA Version die N92). A5 kompatibel ist es auch und damit wäre letztendlich die nächste Version vom Design her kaum anders als die jetzige, was auch Reuters diese Woche schon vermeldet hatte. I saw Chillingo's new game Contre Jour back at E3 this year, and really enjoyed it. It's a very atmospheric puzzle-platformer in the vein of games like Cut the Rope, but as you can tell from the title (which is French for "against daylight"), it's a little darker than that game. You run an eyeball named Petit around a strange little world with stalks for him to swing on and bulbs for him to stick to, and the black and white graphics and great sound design perfectly set the scene. There are sixty levels to play through, and nearly all of them are inventive and fresh. Contre Jour is a really solid experience -- it's casual enough for all players to pick up, but it never gives away that quirky art game feel. Really well done, and a great purchase. G

ASUS bucks trend, sees Q2 thrive due to tablets

ASUS defied trends in an overall downward trend in PC builders by posting healthy results for its spring quarter. Apple's been quietly tweaking the design of the App Store, and The Next Web notes Apple has been posting new updates to App Store category pages and their designs. Games and Education are the first two to get a new, cleaner look. If it looks familiar, that's because the main music homepage uses the same design, with one big bar and a scrolling list of other featured titles on the side. Comixology revamps app, requires re-download of comics

Comixology has issued a major update to their digital comics app, now at version 3.0, that brings many improvements and changes to the graphic-publishing management and storefront app -- so many, in fact that the upgrade will require a one-time, no-cost re-downloading of the comics on users' devices. The overhaul brings a new on-demand store, a completely new interface, background downloading and a host of user-management options for their digital collections.

Weak OmniVision forecast hints iPhone 5 cameras made by Sony

OmniVision may have lent support to hints that Sony is making iPhone cameras. The sensor company was expecting its revenue for the fall to drop compared to the summer to between $255 million and $275 million, considerably below the $306 million average that industry analysts had been expecting. The official Steve Jobs biography by Walter Isaacson is reportedly being updated to include details on Steve's resignation. According to Simon & Schuster, the update will not affect publication deadlines, and the book is still scheduled to hit shelves on November 21. Olympus PEN E-PM1 Mini gets a $500 price tag, September release date

Remember that cute little Micro Four Thirds camera that Olympus unveiled in June? Well, we just got word that the PEN E-PM1 Mini will ship next month, with an equally petite $500 price tag -- including a 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 kit lens. The company is positioning the 12.3 megapixel camera as an upgrade for point-and-shoot users, as "the easiest PEN to use," thanks to a new, simpler user interface and 23 Scene-Select modes. A new upgrade service for all mid-2011 Apple iMacs has been launched by Other World Computing. The OWC Turnkey Upgrade Installation Program allows iMac owners to install up to three OWC Mercury 6G SSDs offering up to 480GB of storage each, a larger capacity hard drive, and up to 32GB of RAM. Owners of the 27" iMac model can also choose to add an eSATA interface that features data transfer rates of up to 600MB/s. OWC's installation service program offers multiple configuration options starting at $169 with a 48 business hour or less installation turnaround.
