Roku 2 line passes through the FCC with modest hardware updates and a reset button
It hasn't even been a year since Roku last updated its line of streaming media players -- but nine months is a long time in the gadget world. So it was pleasant, though not entirely surprising, to spot a trio of new devices from the IPTV pioneer sauntering through the FCC bearing the model numbers 3000X, 3050X, and 3100X. Eventually the three boxes will likely be sold as the Roku 2 HD, XD, and XS respectively. We'll have to wait to see if there's anything new on the software side, but we can tell you there have be

Postbox 2.5 out with new Mac theme, 64-bit mode

Double-row vertical thread view is now supported along with a streamlined message view. In addition to all of this is a major price reducti

Cisco Cius Android tablet hands-on (video)
In the market for a $750 Android tablet with an IT-controlled closed ecosystem, Atom processor, and a requisite middle man to place your order? Then you probably work for a corporation. Cisco's Cius Android tablet was designed with a Cisco infrastructure in mind, focusing heavily on security and integration with other products. Sure, you can watch HD video or play Angry Birds (if IT is willing to flip the switch on game downloads), but you'll mostly be using the Cius to join WebEx presentations, TelePresence conferences, and access custom enterprise apps --

Review: Magpul Executive Field Case for iPhone 4
The shell is straightforward, made of a semi-hardened rubber that slips right around the body of the iPhone 4; it’s rigid enough that the back and sides hold their shape. Twelve ribs line the outside edges to provide some grip, and both the Sleep/Wake button and volume controls are covered with ridged polymer for protection. As has become traditional for iPhone cases, there are openings for the headphone port and mic, side switch, rear camera,…

Symantec report on mobile security concludes iOS and Android both vulnerable to attacks
In Symantec's bleak, dystopian world, it doesn't matter whether you choose Android or iOS -- you'll be making yourself vulnerable to attacks regardless of the camp you're in. The company just concluded a study pitting iOS's security against Android's -- an undertaking intended mainly for corporate IT staffs trying to figure out which devices they can safely issue to employees. (Curiously, despite the enterprise focus, you won't find a single comparison against BlackBerrys.) Although iOS won higher marks when it came to thwarting traditional malware and a more modest advantage in terms of data loss, data integrity, and service attacks, the two platforms proved equally adept at preventing web-based attacks -- and equally powerles

Department of Justice probe eyes Sony's rechargeable battery business
After the headache-inducing bout of hacking woes that beset the corporation in recent weeks, a new Department of Justice-led investigation into Sony's US electronics division may have the company emptying that aspirin bottle. Details of the inquiry are scarce at the moment, but with the company's cooperation confirmed, all signs lead to an alleged price fixing of its rechargeable battery business. Citing data from a Tokyo-based research firm, a Bloomberg report indicates that a 2010 market surplus had Sony Electronics (amongst others) lowering battery prices at the e

Apple posts Final Cut Pro X FAQ following backlash, promises multicamera support and other updates
Though Apple took to the pages of The New York Times last week to respond to a chorus of criticism about Final Cut Pro X, it's clear the company is going to have to go a little further in assuaging videographers who were alarmed to learn that the built-from-the-ground-up software omits certain key features found in Final Cut Pro 7. The outfit has posted an FAQ page on its site, which answers oft-repeated questions, yes, but also reassures users that some -- but not all -- of these features are

Review: Speck CandyShell View for iPhone 4
Before we discuss what’s seriously wrong in CandyShell View, there are certainly some things that we do like about this case. Google helps developers deliver Flash content to HTML5 with Swiffy
With minimal fanfare, Google has released Swiffy. It lets developers convert Flash SWF files to HTML5 so they are usable on Mobile Safari and other platforms that do not support Flash.
For Adobe, the company that created Flash and aimed to have it to be the major animation and video standard on the web, this means that designers and animators can continue to use the well-known (and expensive) Flash authoring environment while addressing the growing number of HTML5 clients.
The utility won't convert Flash videos, but seems to work quite well on web animations. You can see some examples from Google here and here. If you're viewing the demos

Pinpointing 2015 as the commencement of what it calls the zettabyte era, the company has put together a handy infographic to show us just how much data can be fit into one: you can alternatively think of it as the equivalent of 250 billion DVDs, 36 million years of HD video, or the volume of the Great Wall of China if you allow an 11oz cup of coffee to represent a gig

Analyst: the cheap iPhone will be a free 3GS
Analysts really want Apple to enter the low-price smartphone market. So much so, they can't stop talking about this rumored cheap model. The latest analyst to chime in on this topic is Mike Abramsky of RBC Capital. He predicts Apple will release a cheap iPhone model when the iPhone 5 debuts. It won't be a new model, though. Instead, he expects the iPhone 3GS to be offered for free. Apple will also drop the price on the iPhone 4 to US$99, says Abramsky.
Earlier this week, Deutsche Bank analyst Chris Whitmore kicked off this rumor again when he proposed the idea of a mid-range iPhone 4S that will lau

Apple activated 146,000 devices in the first weekend of sales, a staggering number for back then. Most people grabbed the 8 GB model ($599), a situation that likely led Ap

TUAW's Daily iPhone App: Legacy: Mystery Mansion
It's been a while since we've covered a solid match-three game in this space, and Legacy: Mystery Mansion is exactly that. It's similar to Puzzle Quest in that it puts an overarching storyline in the form of a match-three puzzle title, but it's a little tougher than the more casual entries in the genre, putting a hard time limit on each of 25 stages and taking you through recovering missing antiques in a haunted mansion. I was a big fan of Call of Atlantis' match-three mayhem, and Legacy seems very much in that vein, if just a little more difficult.
At any rate, it seems like an excellent match-three puzzler,

The Elliptical Machine Office Desk: putting the 'commute' back in 'telecommuting'
Quite frankly, you've got it just a bit too easy. You rise 98 seconds before you're scheduled to clock in, you mash a power button, and suddenly, you're at work. PJs still caked to your legs, mouth still steaming from a lack of brushing. You're a telecommuter, and you're the envy of the working world. In fact, it'd be just stellar if you'd do us all a solid and add a sliver of complexity to your workday -- you know, like swapping out your OfficeMax special for an elliptical machine. Apple posts Final Cut Pro X FAQ
In what seems to be an attempt to address the widespread controversy over the recent release of Final Cut Pro X, Apple has posted a FAQ on its site to address some of the concerns that have been raised thus far. Designed to answer the biggest questions that professional editors have raised over Final Cut Pro X, Apple has given very few straightforward "no" answers to questions regarding the video production suite's "missing" features.
One of the few "no" answers regards importing projects from Final Cut Pro 7 to Final Cut Pro X. Apple claims the change in product architecture prevents "translating" projects from the old format into the new one. Many other answers either explain how to accomplish tasks that may have confused users accustomed to the old interface.

Outside of being doused with red, yellow, silver and purple paint, the special edition DeathAdder mice ($69.99 a pop) are identical to the version already on the market. One of the blessings of Mac OS X is that end-users do not need to do many maintenance tasks themselves. Most are auto scripts that either run on start up or shut down and take care of a userís system. There are numerous utility applications for Mac OS X, but not all of them are really useful or even particularly easy to use. DiskRadar, from Binary Fruit joins a well-established category of hard di

MacNN Reviews: Disk Radar 1.1
MacNN has reviewed Disk Radar, a new utility program that offers a graphical map of a user's hard drive, along with features that help users "drill down" and locate superfluous files and other "disk debris" that clutters up or crowds out disk space. The program features colorful maps and monitors the ongoing health of the drive hardware itself, but will it prove to be a must for those with terminally tight disk space? Is it worthy of a place in the top tier of OS X disk utilities? We'll explore in our review.

Hooks for FCP7 XML import spotted in Final Cut Pro X
Final Cut Pro X contains references to Pro 7 XML import in its code, a Brazilian website notes. Support for the feature is one of a number of complaints video editors have had with the new suite. The existence of hooks suggests that Apple may have dropped the feature in order to get Pro X released, or simply that support was considered but abandoned.

RIM's rumored 10-inch BlackBerry PlayBook may have already been scrapped to refocus more of RIM's efforts on the company's long-mentioned "superphone" using the same QNX-based OS as the seven-inch tablet. A rumor Tuesday alleges that all work has stopped and that most of the remaining PlayBook focus is on LTE-based 4G PlayBooks, which should ship in October. The N4BB insider didn't know for certain when the phone would ship, but RIM's CEOs have usually put it in early 2012.

iPhone sales will have probably dropped in the current quarter, says Sanford Bernstein' Toni Sacconaghi. The analyst agrees with some investors that other forecasts are too high, and is modeling between 15.2 to 16.2 million units, compared with a consensus prediction of 16.5 million. People may be holding off on buying, says Sacconaghi, because they're aware a new device is around the corner. Notably, the hit is anticipated to be enough to outweigh 19 new iPhone carriers.

Symantec: Android and iOS more secure than PCs, iOS better
Symantec in a study Tuesday (below) gave Android and iOS an advantage over computers in security but gave Apple the edge. Both the Apple and Google mobile platforms are more secure than on many computers, especially Windows, since they prevent "drive-by" app installs and often can't get as many privileges. The presences of app signatures on either adds a layer of security that desktop platforms don't always have.

Trimit reads, simplifies, and condenses web content for social networks
Trimit is a new app that promises to automatically summarize text. The idea is this: You enter a URL, Trimit ingests the web page you pointed to, and then it spits back a condensed version at the length you specify.
TUAW had a chance to take an early peek at this app, which is due to launch soon in App Store. So how did it measure up? All in all, I was impressed by its looks, but not by its functionality.
Trimit is visually lovely. But that loveliness has not been designed around a solid user experience. I did eventually get the hang of using the application, but given the number of steps it took to make things happen, I felt that the app would benefit from hiring a usability designer.
