iBooks 1.2.1 update makes minor tweaks
Apple has posted a minor update of iBooks, its e-reader app for the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch. The title is now at v1.2.1, but what changes have been made are unclear. Release notes provided on iTunes are identical to those of iBooks 1.2, which launched in December.

Walmart to carry Verizon iPhone in 600 stores starting February 10
Walmart has announced that beginning tomorrow, February 10, it will begin carrying the Verizon iPhone for sale in almost 600 of their retail stores. According to MacRumors, Walmart is the latest retailer to join Apple, Verizon, and Best Buy in offering up the the VZW iPhone 4 for sale, even if it is only going to be available inside a fraction of its 8,800 worldwide retail stores. However, with Walmart's reach you can be sure that the sales record Verizon set on the first day of iPhone sales of over 500,000 units will look like peanuts in the coming weeks.

Vivenne Tam, Square team on special edition card reader
Vivienne Tam, a fashion designer known to collaborate with electronics makers such as HP on special edition products in the past, has now teamed up with Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey on a special edition of the Square reader. It will read credit cards when plugged into a compatible iPhone, iPad or Android-powered handset. It plugs into a standard 3.5mm headphone jack.

AT&T justifies Atrix dock's $500 price: it's like a tablet
AT&T today made an unusual defense of its decision to charge $500 for the Atrix 4G's notebook dock. Mobile Products VP Mike Woodward said the price was "not that expensive" compared to that of a tablet like the iPad as it provided as many features and could even compete with some computers. He further told Forbes that the bundle, which gave both an Atrix and the dock for the same price as the dock by itself, was almost like buying two devices at once.

Neben dem Tablet „TouchPad“ hat HP am gestrigen Abend auch zwei neue, auf webOS setzende Smartphones vorgestellt. Die beiden Geräte hören auf die Namen „Pre 3“ und „Veer“, anders als das „TouchPad“ werden sie aber nicht mit webOS 3.0, sondern mit Version 2.2 auf den Markt kommen.

Juice Pack Air update fits Verizon, AT&T iPhone 4 models
Mophie has started pre-orders for a new Juice Pack Air. The revised battery case is now fully compatible with both AT&T and Verizon iPhone 4s, which differ slightly but can both be accommodated. The case uses a dual-color design available in black and silver, or red and white, an option which will ship later. To make sound clearer, speaker output is funneled from the bottom of an iPhone through to the case's front.

iBooks gets an update for iPhone/iPad
Apple's ebook reader for iOS, iBooks, received an update today to version 1.2.1.
The update provides a few very important changes. The first, and perhaps the most welcome change, is that stability and performance of the app has been improved. I was able to verify this in many places -- just waiting for books to appear on the iBooks bookshelves used to take about 20 seconds on my iPhone 4, and that time has been reduced to about 5 seconds. Books also seem to open faster, and there's no lag when swiping through pages.
All of the previous updates listed in the update notes were there in version 1.2, including the availability of illustrated books, creating personal Collections, printing PDF documents and notes via AirPrint, and automatic hyphenation of documents.

World of Goo for iPad outsells than Mac, PC, Linux, Wii, Xbox versions
Developer 2D Boy makes the popular World of Goo game, which they recently released on the iPad, and the official blog has a long writeup about the iPad version from creation to release. 2D Boy originally planned to release the game on the iPhone, but couldn't get it to work right, so when the iPad came around, they decided to tackle the port again. At last, the webOS-empowered TouchPad, HP's answer to the growing tablet market. Analyst calls for 1 million Verizon iPhones in first week
Apple and Verizon will likely sell over 1 million CDMA iPhone 4s in the first week of availability, argues RBC Capital Markets analyst Mike Abramsky. The figure is based on estimates of pre-order demand and stock quantities, the latter of which are surmised to include between 1 and 1.5 million units. If high sales persist after launch, about 3 to 4 million Verizon iPhones could sell within the device's first quarter, says Abramsky.

HP to challenge iBooks with Time magazine subs, Kindle app
HP as part of the introduction of the TouchPad set out a determined strategy to challenge Apple in the tablet reading space. The company promised its webOS slate would get subscription access to major Time Inc. magazines, including Time as well as People and Sports Illustrated. The company gave little details but made clear they would work in any orientation and would be as visually rich as their iPad equivalents.

Marathon man preps for second live stream, with multiple iPhones, iPad
Readers may recall our report last year on runner and TUAW reader, Joseph Tame, who streamed the Tokyo marathon from a head-mounted iPhone. This year's marathon will be held on February 27th, and Joseph has found additional ways to make the 42km run even more difficult.

Android 2.3.3 announced with more developer-friendly access to NFC

It's always fun to take a look back in time and it is even more fun when the person we are looking back at is Steve Jobs. In this short video clip, a 23-year old Steve Jobs prepares for one of his first television appearances. It is entertaining to see him act surprised when he spies himself on the television set and admits frankly that he is about to throw up, presumably from nerves. HP at its webOS special event confirmed that it's bringing webOS to full-size computers. The company didn't have full details and showed only a rough mockup of its current all-in-one desktops and notebooks. The company also didn't give a firm timeline for when this hardware would be ready, but it also pointed to hinted-at printers.

iPod classic still the 5th most popular US MP3 player
Speculation has been poking around lately that the iPod classic's time is not long for this world, but before you start etching out the gravestone, take a look at these recent sales rankings from the NPD Group. According to the numbers, the iPod classic is still the fifth most popular MP3 player in the US, right behind all four versions of the iPod touch. Apple, in fact, claims 9 out of the top 10 spots on the list, but while the shuffle and the nano are down in the 6-9 spots, the iPod classic still reigns supreme when you don't need to have apps.

Nokia talking Android and WP7 deals, may have news Friday
Nokia is still ambivalent on its decision to switch platforms and may run Android, Windows Phone 7, or even both, a source said Wednesday. The company is still reportedly in talks with both Google and Microsoft even with just two days to go before a February 11 financial meeting likely to include an announcement. The HP Pre 3 is here! We just got our hands on one and snapped a whole bunch of pictures -- see the gallery below. Stay tuned for our first impressions soon. HP TouchPad to boast Skype calling, Kindle app
HP didn't exactly show off a ton of apps for the TouchPad at its event today, but did at least reveal a couple of key ones. That includes a new tablet-friendly Kindle app for webOS, which will naturally let you "buy once, read everywhere," and give you access to all of the more than 810,000 books that are available in the Kindle Store -- as always, it'll be completely free. What's more, while details are still a bit light, HP also confirmed that it's working with Skype on video calling, which will presumably be included at launch. HP's decided to end its fireworks-rich presentation on a gorgeous bombshell: webOS is coming to PCs! The company says it's thinking beyond today and intends to take webOS to "other connected devices, including printers, and some form factors you haven't seen before."

By now, you know how HP's new slate compares to the crowd -- now, see how it looks up close and personal. We just got our hands on that dual-core Palm webOS tablet here in San Francisco, and it's a beaut, with a slim black profile that highlights the brilliant 9.7-inch screen. Looking for our Motorola Atrix 4G review?
Hey there. Yes, you. If you're looking out for the Motorola Atrix 4G review -- don't despair. We just got our hands on the device yesterday (that's us man-handling it up above), and we're currently in the process of putting it through its paces (along with the laptop dock, HD / desktop dock, and all the accessories). We didn't think 24 hours was quite enough of a window to tell you how we really felt about this monumental device, so we're giving ourselves the space and time we think is necessary to properly review the phone and all its features. Don't worry though, we'll have the full, unadulterated Engadget review up in the coming days (probably by the end of the week).

Time inks deal with HP to bring magazine subscriptions to the TouchPad
Time Inc. has been trying to work out a deal on tablet magazine subscriptions for some time now, and it's just made a fairly big move in that direction with the help of HP. It confirmed at its event today that it's teamed up with Time Inc. to offers subscriptions to some of its magazines on the TouchPad, including Sports Illustrated, Time, Fortune, and People.

HP Touchstone tech now lets you tap two devices together to swap a URL
So, HP is extending "Touchstone" to mean more than "that heavy, slanted magnet thing that my Pre always slips off of." Report backs in-app subscriptions as mandatory for iOS
Apple is indeed requiring magazines and newspapers to support in-app iOS subscriptions, Techcrunch sources say. The technology was introduced with The Daily, a tablet-only publication created by News Corp.. Much of the newspaper industry is known to be upset, however, as it wants its own control over subscription billing instead of having to pay Apple a 30 percent cut for operating through iTunes.

Sparrow mail application now available in the Mac App Store
Sparrow announced today that version 1.0 of its popular email application is now available in the Mac App Store. The developers listened to customer feedback and dropped the price from US $25 to a much lower $9.99. The paid version is free of advertisements and lets you add multiple email accounts. A free, ad-supported version, Sparrow Lite, is also completed and awaiting App Store approval.

HP fights back with Veer, Pre3
HP as promised launched two new smartphones at its webOS event. The Veer is billed as one of the smallest smartphones ever and has the front surface area of a credit card; it tucks a slide-out keyboard underneath a 2.6-inch, 320x400 display. The first Pre breathed new life into Palm. The Pre 2, on the other hand, didn't exactly have the same luster and longevity. Here's to a decidedly Palm-less round three. The QWERTY slider with the all-too-familiar form factor has a 3.6-inch 800 x 480 display, 5 megapixel camera with AF and LED flash, HD video, a front-facing camera for video calling, mobile hotspot. HP has plenty of great new stuff to announce in the phone and tablet space today, but something is notably absent: the Palm brand. It appears to be a casualty of this acquisition and subsequent "scale," and while the brand might not mean much to the modern smartphone consumer, it will be sorely missed by those of us who have been looking to Palm (in all its various forms) for handheld innovation for roughly two decades. HP is keeping the webOS brand around, however, so there's that -- and hopefully nobody will notice when we prefix it with an under-the-breath Palm when we're feeling a little sentimental.

Adobe has officially released Flash Player 10.2 for Mac and it's available for download now. However, Power PC Macs of old are no supported in this version.

Smurf it all to smurf! In-app purchases ring up $1,400 in charges
It's not exactly a new thing, but the Washington Post reported on the latest episode of a child spending hundreds -- actually $1,400 -- on in-app purchases. In this case, the 8-year-old was buying Smurfberries to decorate the Smurfs' Village app. You can spend up to $99.99 for a single in-app purchase of the berries. Apple provided the family a refund after the mother received the bill.

Late leaks: HP showing Touchpad, Pre3, Touchpad today
A last-minute series of leaks on Wednesday has given away HP's plans for its special webOS event in an hour. The launch will include both the Topaz tablet, now believed to be but also a sometimes rumored "smallest" ever smartphone, the Veer. Robert Scoble didn't have many details but said it was the smallest he'd "ever seen" and looked like a "large pebble in your hand."

CNBC: Apple should be world's most valuable company
Apple's latest earnings report has been available for three weeks and analysts are chiming in with their 2011 assessment of the Cupertino company. Though Apple's stock dipped slightly after Steve Jobs announced another medical leave of absence, the release of the Verizon iPhone and Apple's 2011 forecast is causing the stock to rebound to an all-time high. AT&T rolling out unlimited calling to any mobile number
Following a trend started by Sprint back in 2009, AT&T has just announced that it'll start offering its customers unlimited calling to any mobile number in the US, regardless of carrier, starting tomorrow (currently, only AT&T numbers qualify). There are a few catches, of course: you've got to sign up, you need to be on the company's unlimited messaging plan, and you need to on a "qualifying" Nation or FamilyTalk plan. AT&T gives unlimited mobile-to-mobile to keep iPhone users
AT&T pulled out one more strategy in an attempt to prevent defections to Verizon for the iPhone with an unlimited calling option. Unlimited Mobile to Any Mobile lets those who have unlimited messaging but a limited voice plan make unlimited calls to anyone in the US on a cellphone, regardless of which carrier the receiver uses. Verizon iPhone hands-on: better calls, slower data, the iPhone experience you know and love
If you've been living on an island somewhere, you might not know that Verizon Wireless now has the iPhone 4. It's available starting today from Apple and Verizon retail outlets, as well as both companies' web stores. However, as I'm an existing Verizon customer, I was able to take advantage of the pre-order that took place last week.

European Commission gets first universal phone charger
The European Commission has now received the first samples of the universal phone charger it has finalized a standard based on a microUSB connection. A press conference was held on Tuesday to celebrate the milestone, and the charger will be compatible with more than 90 percent of cell phones. Sony teases Alpha A77, extra details at CP+ show
Sony in the absence of major new cameras for the CP+ expo provided a new teaser for its future Alpha A700 sequel. The camera, shown in a transparent body to prove it's a real design, is now known to shoot 1080p video. Mac Life has put together an interesting article on why we probably won't see USB 3.0 natively on the Mac. Young startup Pelican Imaging provided a glimpse at a new technology it expects to produce a major leap in the camera quality on smartphones and tablets. Rather than have a monolithic camera sensor, it would distribute the image across a grid of sensors that would then stitch the image together. BBC iPlayer app for UK iPads set to arrive February 10, the US in June
The BBC Internet Blog is reporting that the long-awaited BBC iPlayer app will arrive on the UK iOS App Store for iPad by the end of this week.
Daniel Danker, the new general manager of BBC programmes on demand, wrote on the blog, "We're just applying the finishing touches to the apps as we speak, and all things being well we plan to have Android and iPad apps in stores by the end of the week." Danker also wrote, "Over Christmas, growth in mobile use of BBC iPlayer outpaced PC growth by more than 2-to-1, and BBC iPlayer growth on tablets outpaced PCs by more than 20-to-1." Apple retail stores halt reservations on some MacBook Pros
Many US Apple Stores are now marking some MacBook Pro models as "unavailable" for reservation, accounts say. iTunes stays on top of growing internet movie business in 2010, but 2011 could be very different
While much of the news lately has surrounded subscription internet movie and TV services the video on-demand market was up nearly 40% last year and is expected to keep growing. According to stats from IHS Screen Digest, video revenue for the Apple iTunes store grew 60 percent last year, but saw its overall market share shrink from from 74.4 to 64.5 percent. iPad 2: Produktion bereits angelaufen?

The Verizon iPhone is now available for online orders, both at Apple's site and Verizon's. Pre-orders were available last week to existing customers, some of whom have received their iPhones already, but online orders are now open to everyone.

A Better Finder Attributes v5 has debuted for Snow Leopard, sporting a new user interface and a 64-bit engine to speed up performance. The program, primarily used to correct JPEG EXIF timestamps on photos, can also be used to change the modification dates on files and folders, control visibility of files, batch lock or unlock files and other features. Etox plans all-electric Zafer sportscar, could sell for around $20,000
It may not be ready to challenge Telsa just yet, but it looks like Turkish automaker Etox is about to get into the all-electric sportscar business with a vehicle that could cost considerably less than much of its competition. The company is reportedly now working on an electric prototype of its Zafer sportscar, and it says the car could run for as low as 30,000 to 35,000 Turkish lira (or roughly $19,000 to $22,000) when it eventually hits showrooms. What happens to the original iPad after iPad 2?
The iPad 2 just entered production, says the Wall Street Journal, and multiple sources (including common sense) point to its release sometime within the next couple months. Nikon on Tuesday evening rolled out a pair of high-end Coolpix cameras to challenge once-safe Canon territory. The P300 is its direct challenger to the Canon S95 or S4500 IS and packs a 4.2X (24-100mm) lens with a very wide f1.8 aperture. Mated to a 12.2-megapixel CMOS sensor, it's both much more suitable in low light than a usual compact and much faster; the shallow depth of field also helps with macros.

iPad run over by a PT Cruiser, lives to tell the tale
We see a lot of examples of how Apple products can withstand abuse, but one of the more dramatic examples showed up in the TUAW inbox this afternoon.
Reader Aaron sent us a link to a YouTube video (on the next page) demonstrating how an iPad belonging to a fellow employee handled being run over by the front and rear wheels of a Chrysler PT Cruiser. As the video shows, the iPad was in the standard Apple Case and the front glass was crushed quite extensively. However, the Home button still worked and the rest of the components in the display were totally functional. The touchscreen still responded to gestures, and the accelerometer responded by rotating the screen.
We don't recommend driving over your iPad to test the durability (duh!), but isn't it good to know that it

Wüdskin is a Kickstarter-sponsored bamboo and aluminum iPad case
We've talked about Kickstarter here before -- it's a site that allows people to try and raise money for ideas or projects that they're working on. And there's an iPad-related project that's being funded right now. The Wüdskin is a protective iPad case made out of bamboo and aluminum that's a little bulky, but pretty striking anyway. It definitely looks sturdy. There's a hinge on it that also works as a stand, and the hinge is the same that's used in some laptop screens, so it's both durable and well-designed.

Verizon iPhone causing fragmentation of iOS? We've got the real story
Sometimes, when bloggers hear something that sounds like a scoop, they rush to publish the story before anyone else can get it. Unfortunately, that sometimes causes repercussions.

WSJ: iPad 2 in production; to be offered through Verizon and AT&T
In what shouldn't be too much of a shock for anyone, the Wall Street Journal is reporting that the next generation iPad is now in production, which would concur nicely with the rumors that the iPad 2 will be released in the next four to six weeks. The WSJ report doesn't offer a whole lot of details, but they cite their sources as saying that the new iPad will be "thinner, lighter and will come with a faster processor, more memory and a more powerful graphics processor" and front-facing camera (no word on a rear-facing camera).
However the next iPad will not feature a higher resolution display. WSJ sources note that the new iPad's display will be "similar" to the current model.

LogonKey secures Macs using serialized USB drives

Apple Store may be coming to NYC's Grand Central Terminal
As if it wasn't busy enough already, Apple may be looking to build a retail store right in the middle of New York's Grand Central Terminal, according to reports. Apple has already started production of the next-generation iPad, a leak asserted Tuesday night. The unnamed sources backed views that production would start in February as well as most of the widely leaked hardware details. The WSJ understood it would have a "faster processor," faster graphics and more RAM along with the expected dual cameras, but a similar 1024x768 resolution for the display.

BBC to launch iPlayer for iPad, Android on Thursday
Having seen a rapid rise in popularity of its online iPlayer service, the BBC will be launching a Flash-less, iPad-only iOS app version on Feb. 10th, along with an Android version (Froyo devices only) that requires Flash 10.1 -- allowing UK residents to watch BBC television and radio content both live and on-demand, which had not previously been widely available for mobile devices. Also launching this week for all versions of iPlayer is a new feature for all versions called "inter-linking" that allows non-BBC content to be offered through iPlayer.

HTC Thunderbolt delayed, Verizon iPhone's next wave March 1
HTC's Thunderbolt has faced a last-minute delay that could give the iPhone an unintended edge even as Apple faces a shortage. A memo shows that the 4G Android phone was to have been launched on February 14 but with "no ETA" for the new schedule.
