Stimmmopped lets you tune your axe with LEDs
Look, that BOSS TU-2 has served you (and eleventy billion other guitarists) well, but isn't it time for something a bit different in the pedal board mix? Stimmmopped is that very thing, which is a darling little contraption that uses LEDs rather than a microphone in order to tell you if your strings are tuned as they should be. Put simply, the device illuminates a string with a pair of lights, both of which are flashing at the frequency that the string should be vibrating at if it's in tune; if you're off, the illuminated part of the string will appear to be moving (thanks, stroboscopic effect!), and if you're on the money, the lights will appear fixed. ITC will investigate Apple complaint against Nokia
The US International Trade Commission on Friday agreed to investigate Apple's patent complaint against Nokia. Its investigation will determine whether or not Nokia's phones are violating nine Apple patents. A successful investigation could result in a ban against importing most or all Nokia phones into the US.

Briefly: Photoshop 1.0 on iPhone, Freeverse sells 5M apps
To celebrate the 20th anniversary of Photoshop, Russell Brown -- one of the program's original development team members -- has released a special iPhone application to select attendees of the Photoshop 20th Anniversary Event. The app is a replica of the original v1.0 release of Photoshop, which Adobe debuted on the Mac in 1990. The new title took two weeks to make, and lets users adjust things like the white/black levels of photos and separate red, blue and green channels.

TomTom claims over 100,000 iPhone app downloads
Over 100,000 copies of the TomTom iPhone app have been downloaded, the company claims in its latest quarterly results. The title is one of the more expensive ones at the App Store, currently costing at least $60 in a US-only edition. It does however supply functions not available in Google Maps, namely turn-by-turn instructions.

HP kicks out new touchscreen cameras and camcorders
HP just dropped five new cameras and three new camcorders at , including a few with touchscreen controls and revamped UIs. The $109 CW450t (pictured above) and $149 CW460t cameras have 2.7- and 3-inch touchscreen, respectively, and 4x optical zoom, while the $169 V5061u and $199 V5560u camcorders have 3-inch touchscreens shoot full 1080p -- the V5560u adds in a 5x optical zoom. That's not all for HP's low-end imaging assault: there's also the $99 CW450 and $129 SW450 cams with 4x zooms, the $149 PW550z with a 5x zoom, and the $109 V1020h camcorder that shoots 720p. Yes, it's a confusing mish-mash of letters, numbers, and bargain-basement prices -- isn't the low-end point-and-shoot market just delightful?

iPhone SDK terms alter to allow contests
Developers can now incorporate contests and sweepstakes into iPhone apps, according to a new rule in Apple's SDK terms. The main restrictions are that a developer must be the sole sponsor of a promotion, and that an app comply with related laws. Apple also insists that the official rules for a promotion deny any sponsorship or responsibility on Apple's part.

Active Media ships external SSDs with USB 3.0
Active Media Products this week introduced two 2.5-inch external SSD drives with USB 3.0 connections. The Aviator-2 SuperSpeed SSDs are said to have performance theoretically four times faster than hard drives that rely on the USB 2.0 connection and has the headroom of the spec's full 4.8Gbps. Residing inside the USB 3.0 Aviator-2 case is Active's 64GB or 128GB Predator X7 SSD, which are rated at transfer speeds of up to 200MBps.

Dell Mini 5 tested early: good size, poor keyboard
Dell's Mini 5 tablet has been given an early preview that has provided new details about the company's entry into the tablet arena. Motorola cable boxes to get Blur, connect with phones
Now that Moto's phone and set-top box divisions are being split out into their own company, it looks like there's some convergence afoot: the MOTOBLUR interface found on the CLIQ and the Backflip is currently being tested on the company's cable boxes with a tentative release scheduled for this year. CBS promises to sell some TV shows on iTunes for 99 cents
We'd already heard that Apple hoped to bring at least some TV shows down to the 99-cent mark on iTunes in time for the iPad launch, and it looks like CBS is now the first to officially come on board. While a final deal apparently isn't done just yet, CBS CEO Leslie Moonves has flatly told the Financial Times that there "are certain shows that will be sold on Apple for 99 cents" -- not exactly much wiggle room there. Other networks aren't speaking on the record just yet, but the Financial Times has previously reported that some have already agreed to similar terms, and are expected to start selling

Suit accuses Philadelphia schools of spying on students
A new lawsuit accuses a Philadelphia school district of spying on high school students, according to the Associated Press. The Lower Merion School District provides some 2,300 notebooks to students at the Harriton and Lower Merion High Schools. The legal case is being brought on behalf of Blake Robbins, a student who was told by a Harriton assistant principal that a webcam caught him doing something inappropriate at home.

Last week, Apple rolled out a firmware update for recent Mac Pro models that tackles a performance issue for users running multiple applications in Mac OS X 10.6.2. Sony patent application reveals universal, LCD-based game controller
Well, here's a bit of an odd one. A recent patent application from Sony has not only revealed an LCD-based game controller (which would be notable enough in itself), but an LCD-based, universal game controller that's designed to work with more than one game console. Apple's changes iPhone developer agreement to seemingly allow gambling applications?
Mike Rose posts this interesting change in the iPhone developer agreement:
3.3.17 Your Application may include promotional sweepstake or contest functionality provided that You are the sole sponsor of the promotion and that You and Your Application comply with any applicable laws.
Apple is certainly going to frown on straight gambling apps but there is a whole lot of gray area in there which could be exploited by developers who perhaps want to make sweepstakes apps with cash prizes.
For instance, how about an ad supported sweepstakes app. Or a bingo app. Or a March Madness app with winner getting the proceeds?
Since laws in the US are on a state by state basis, it would be hard to allow/disallow download of the application by jurisdiction as Apple states. Currently, Apps are parsed by country and there d

Australian Broadcasting Corp. jumps on iPad development
The Australian Broadcasting Corporation is diving headlong into iPad development, says the Sydney Morning Herald. The network is said to be speaking with various technology companies for help, with the aim of bringing apps to the tablet sometime this year. No specific titles have been announced, but much like the CBC in Canada and BBC in the UK, the ABC has assets in radio, TV and the web.

Google Shopper gives Android phones store scanning
Google late Thursday rolled out a new mobile app linked into its search services. Shopper serves as an official rival to titles like ShopSavvy and uses the principles behind the Goggles app to provide an advanced product search. Besides scanning the barcodes for most products, Shopper is smart enough to recognize books, games, movies and music by their covers and labels. If it identifies an item, it can not only provide pricing at many common shops but detailed information and reviews where they're available.

Hulu may come to iPad as a pay-for service
One of the seemingly perfect applications for the iPad is for it to play TV shows over the Internet. Apple clearly would like you to buy those shows from iTunes, albeit at half the $2/show rate they are currently charging. But just about everyone else in the US is enjoying their TV for free from Hulu with *gasp* advertising thrown in at regular intervals. These "commercials", as we'll call them, seem to have made Hulu a success while at the same time, paying the people who make the TV shows to make them. Where did they come up with this model?!
So, it is with great wonder that we read that Hulu wants to go to a pay-per-view model on the iPad. Not only because the built-in, Apple iTunes is already sitting there waiting with a pay-per-view model that would kill it before

Steve Jobs: Flash ist nicht mehr zeitgemäß
Während seiner iPad-Promotour durch die großen US-Verlage soll Steve Jobs die fehlende Flash-Unterstützung auf dem iPod touch, dem iPhone und nun auch dem iPad mit der Abschaffung des Diskettenlaufwerks bei der Einführung der iMacs verglichen haben. Man könne zugunsten besserer Technologien getrost darauf verzichten. Zudem sei Flash extrem leistungshungrig und würde die zehn Stunden Akkulaufzeit des iPad auf anderthalb Stunden reduzieren.
Apple favorisiert statt dessen die mit dem neuen HTML5-Standard einhergehenden Animations- und Streamingtechnologien, Voraussetzung dafür sind allerdings die neuesten Browsergenerationen.

Cisco kündigt Partnerschaftsvertrag mit Hewlett-Packard
Keith Goodwin, Senior Vice President in Ciscos Partnerorganisation, hat bekannt gegeben, dass der Netzwerkausrüster den zum 30. April auslaufenden Partnerschaftsvertrag mit Hewlett-Packard als Systemintegrator nicht erneuern wird. Er begründet den Schritt damit, dass sich das frühere partnerschaftliche Verhältnis mit HP über die Jahre abgekühlt habe. Developers can now submit apps for sale in 13 more App Stores, Apple has announced. Notable European countries in the expansion include Armenia, Bulgaria and Macedonia. Corsair recently introduced an 8GB flash drive that is unique for Corsair in its inclusion of a keypad that lets users access their secured data by entering a PIN code. An upcoming round of MacBook Pros should use NVIDIA's Optimus dual graphics to get around the lack of a faster integrated chipset, a leak suggests Friday morning. OCZ annonced the future availability of a Limited Edition of one of its SSD models, the Vertex LE.
This drive is based on the current best controller on the market, the SandForce. OCZ claims it can delivers up to 270 MB/s reading and 250 MB/s writing with 15,000 IO/s. This Limited Edition will be available with 100 or 200 GB, for an estimated price of 400 or 800 USD. Apple versus Flash: Die Anfeindungen gehen weiter
Steve Jobs kann es nicht lassen: Während der iPad-Präsentation beim WSJ soll der Apple CEO erneut scharf gegen Adobes Flash geschossen haben. Laut Jobs' Meinung würde Flash dazu führen, dass "sich die Akkulaufzeit des iPads während des Surfens auf Flash-Pages von zehn Stunden auf anderthalb Stunden verkürzt". Vor fast drei Jahren hat Corsair auf der CeBIT im März 2007 die erste Generation seines mit einem PIN-Code gesicherten USB-Sticks „Flash Padlock“ vorgestellt. OCZ cranks up the performance on Vertex Limited Edition SSD

Lettered Passcode on your iPhone and iPod touch
Today we've got something interesting for you security-minded folks with iPhones or iPod touches. You know how Apple only lets you use four numbers as your passcode to unlock your device? That's as weak as banks PINs and school lockers. Everyone knows you need at least six characters and alpha-numeric at that.
We have your answer. We've built a profile from Apple's corporate developement kit that allows alphanumeric passcodes. All you have to do is open this link (On your iDevice only!) and you will be prompted to pick a new passcode. You will be required to make a passcode with a mix of letters and numbers and you cannot put numbers in a consecutive order. ATI/AMD Radeon HD 5870 Eyefinity 6 Right on TIme for the New Mac Pro!?
According to the last information available, the Radeon HD 5870 Eyefinity 6 should hit shelves on March 11. Just to refresh your mind, this card will offer 6 mini DisplayPort ports and could manage 6 monitors at 1920x1200 or 3 monitors at 2560x1600.
To manage such a large number of monitors, the card will feature 2 GB of RAM while other specifications will remain similar to a Radeon 5870. We would not be surprised that Apple decided to delay the release of the new Mac Pro to fit with the release of this new graphic card.

Tiffin Photo fx 3.0 iPhone app adds new lighting filters
Tiffen has released Tiffen Photo fx 3.0 for the iPhone. The photography app carries 67 filters in nine groups with different themes. The filters can be applied to photos taken by an iPhone or stored on an iPhone or iPod touch. The app also includes diffusion textures, grain presets and lighting effects. The interface provides slider-based modification for fine-tuning an effect, while multiple filters can be added to a single image without having to save the image after each conversion.

Norton readying iPad app to access online backup services
Symantec has released details of its upcoming Norton 360 app for the iPad. The service allows users to back-up data online, including documents, music, photos and videos. Users will be able to access the data and share it with others via URL links. Norton has yet to confirm if users will be able to play video, view photos or listen to music directly from the app interface. The utility also appears to lack protection tools for viruses or other security threats.

CBS outed as one of the companies to cut TV show prices to $.99
You figure Disney/ABC will play along with Apple's plan to charge $.99 for TV shows. Now it looks like CBS will join them, at least on some of their shows says Peter Kafka at Mediamemo.
CEO Les Moonves says the broadcaster will mark down the price on some of its shows from $1.99 to 99 cents.

ZTE's Smooth Android slider is a not-so-smooth Pre knockoff
We hate to yell "Pre!" at the top of our lungs here, since we'd really like to see further exploration of the portrait QWERTY form factor for Android, but it's hard to avoid the form factor and stylistic comparisons. The new "Smooth" phone from ZTE is a low-end handset running Android 1.6, with a 2.8-inch QVGA screen, WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS and a love for Palm industrial design. The phone, which is being shown off at MWC, should retail under 1000 Yuan (about $146 US) and be released in August of this year as a low-end smartphone contender.

CBS set to reduce prices for certain shows on iTunes
CBS is reportedly set to reduce prices for certain TV shows purchased through iTunes, according to The Wall Street Journal. CEO Les Moonves suggests the company will mark down some of its content from $1.99 down to 99 cents, although he did not provide details regarding which shows would be reduced or a time-frame for any plans.

iPad SDK integrates new features for widgets, dictionaries
The iPhone 3.2 OS allegedly integrates several additional iPad features that Apple has yet to formally introduce, an unnamed source has told AppleInsider. The Contact app, known as MobileAddressBook, has been converted into a utility labeled LittleBrownBook. iPhone may cause memory supply crunch in 2010
Apple's iPhone plans this year could trigger shortages of flash memory for everyone, iSuppli says in a new study. The analyst group expects the average iPhone to carry over 35GB of storage after capacity upgrades across the line, or more than the 32GB maximum available today. Combined with a nearly 32 percent growth in iPhone shipments to 33 million, Apple's sheer dominance of NAND flash memory could lead to "periods of undersupply" in the rest of 2010.

WowWee's Paper Jamz: fake guitars make the jump to 2D, gain some musicality
Just when we thought Guitar Hero had removed every shred of dignity from the once proud profession of "rocking out," along comes Paper Jamz to do away with all pretense. Kingston Mac RAM Module References: Mistake or First Sign of Forthcoming Products from Apple?
If you open a MacBook Pro, most owners will find memory modules from Kingston. On its website, you can use their RAM module search tool to find the right modules for your Mac. However, two references are described with no real compatibility with currently available Mac: KTA-MB1333/4G and KTA-MB1333/2G. Those are units for MacBook and MacBook Pro, of respectively 4 GB and 2 GB, for a bus clocked at 1333 MHz. Using such modules would not bring any advantages to the current MacBook/MacBook Pro models, with bus limited to 1066 MHz. So, we could offer several hypothesis:

Google Acquires reMail
reMail is or we should say was an application available on the AppStore and its function was to create index of contents in e-mails in order to perform an advanced search in messages. Its developer announced on its website that Google bought the application and gave him a position in the Gmail team. Almost at the same time, the application disappeared from the AppStore. So, we can now postulate that google will either try to rebrand the application or will integrate it into a more global technology or to one of its online services. Dell profit drops despite Windows 7 PC rush
Dell tonight reported mixed results for its latest quarter. Despite shipping 29 percent more PCs to home users between November and January versus the same timeframe a year ago, the Texas-based company's net profit ultimately dropped 5 percent as it focused on selling less expensive PCs. Its gross margin dropped to a relatively slim 16.6 percent as the holiday-related sales spike pushed it to sell 2 million more computers without as much profit as in the past.

School allegedly uses students' laptop webcam for espionage, lawsuit ensues
Hold onto your butts, kids, we've got a doozy of a story. Let's take this one slow: a class-action lawsuit has been filed in Pennsylvania accusing the Lower Merion school district of "unauthorized, inappropriate and indiscriminate remote activation of a webcam contained within a laptop computer issued to students by the School District" -- without prior knowledge or consent, of course. The tale begins when Assistant Principle Lindy Mastko of Harriton High School informed a student that he was "engaged in improper behavior in his home" and when asked how she knew, the suit alleges Mastko verified to both the boy and his father of the capability for the school district to remotely activate the webcam -- and apparently, that capability is being used.
The school district has yet to respond to the accusations, so at this point
