Apple's Long-Delayed HomeView Was Already Being Tested in 2024
Apple's new HomeView underwent regulatory testing in October 2024, and it was running what would now be known as HomeView software version 18, according to an FCC document uncovered by MacRumors contributor Aaron Perris.
The document provides the clearest evidence yet that the HomeView was held up due to Siri AI's delayed launch. Apple initially previewed the more intelligent version of Siri at WWDC 2024, but in March 2025 the company announced that it needed more time to get it ready. Siri AI finally launched this September.Related Roundup: Apple HomeViewBuyer's Guide: HomeView (Buy Now)Related Forum: HomePod, HomeView, CarPlay – Home & Auto TechThis article, "Apple's Long-Delayed HomeView Was Already Being Tested in 2024" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

Apple Invites App Updated With Two New Features
The free Apple Invites app for the iPhone was updated today with two new features: hosts can now more easily manually add guests to an event and mark their RSVP status, and the app's Home Screen widget now supports the extra large size option.
Released in February 2025, the Apple Invites app makes it easy to invite people to events, such as birthday parties and baby showers. The ability to create an event in the app requires subscribing to an iCloud+ plan with at least 50GB of storage for $0.99 per month, but anyone who receives an event link can RSVP for free on any device.

Apple Intelligence Coming to China in December With iOS 27.3
Apple plans to bring Apple Intelligence to China in iOS 27.3 after two years of regulatory delays, reports Bloomberg. The launch will include basic Apple Intelligence features for things like photo editing, but Siri AI won't be available. Image Playground and the newer version of Genmoji will be missing, plus text generation tools will be limited.
The South China Morning Post today reported that China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology recently gave Apple network access permits to add Alibaba's Qwen and Tongyi Wanxiang models to the iPhone Duo, iPhone 18 Pro, and earlier iPhones, paving the way for an Apple Intelligence debut.
Apple introduced the first Apple Intelligence features in iOS 18.1, but they have been missing from China since launch. Apple received initial clearance to launch Apple Intelligence in China in July, but needed additional clearance for a consumer launch.

OpenAI Says Ex-Employee Showed Its Device Plans to Apple
OpenAI today suggested Apple could be using its trade secrets, the very thing Apple is already suing OpenAI for. In a court filing, OpenAI accused an ex-employee of giving sensitive data about an unreleased product to Apple.
The unnamed employee joined OpenAI from Apple and then returned after six months. OpenAI claims the person sent "over a hundred highly confidential files" to personal accounts, including manufacturing data and detailed images of at least one unreleased product. The former employee allegedly "made a presentation" on OpenAI product plans for Apple's senior leadership "months ago," and OpenAI is worried Apple could use that information to further its work on AI devices.
OpenAI is very concerned that its trade secret and confidential information is now circulating inside Apple, where Apple engineers can shape Apple's upcoming products based on OpenAI's confidential and innovative work. OpenAI has raised these issues directly with Apple, but to date, Apple has not provided OpenAI with th

Why the Apple Home Collection will accelerate smart home adoption
I think it’s sometimes easy for geeks to forget that we live in a tech bubble with our fellow geeks. Many of us here have been using smart home technology for more than a decade now, some even for many decades.
I’ve seen a lot of bemused comments on the Apple Home Collection, with people asking why anyone would want to pay significantly higher prices for devices which don’t seem to offer any added benefit. But I think this is absolutely a bubble effect …

Skip the controller, the Apple TV 4K still isn't a good gaming platform
Despite the inclusion of the super-fast A19 chip and continued support for game controllers, the new 4th-gen Apple TV 4K is still far from a viable gaming device for anything beyond the most casual of audiences, thanks to missing features and mind-boggling design decisions.Apple TV gaming is still a thing, kinda.Every so often, the Apple TV 4K tries to be a game console, and Apple promotes a ton of games in the App Store to bolster that claim. With the first new Apple TV 4K release in four years, there was hope that the 4th-gen model would take things to a new level. But at a time when the gaming industry is readying itself for the biggest game release in a decade, and perhaps ever, in the form of Grand Theft Auto 6, the Apple TV 4K just doesn't cut it. OpenAI cries foul, says Apple stole secrets from it in 2026
In a new filing, OpenAI claims that it too was victimized by confidential information theft, and implies that Apple's HomeView was somehow influenced by that theft.Apple will get some of the OpenAI documents it requested in court.Without much detail, OpenAI says that during the forensic investigation that is required by Apple's trade secret theft lawsuit, it discovered trade theft by Apple. In a filing on Wednesday, the company vaguely says that the thief joined OpenAI from Apple, worked at OpenAI for six months, then returned to Apple. When the alleged thief returned to Apple, they brought with them details of one OpenAI hardware device stashed away in personal accounts. Furthermore, the documents include specific images, engineering info, supplier information, manufacturing data, and standards for cosmetic finishes and sealants. HomePod Mini 1 Will Also Support Siri AI Later This Year, Says CNET
Siri AI will apparently not be limited to the new HomePod mini 2, with support also coming to the first-generation HomePod mini in a software update later this year, according to a report today from CNET's Jeff Carlson.
"The HomePod Mini 2 also gets a faster S10 processor, which should help with processing Siri AI requests," he said. "However, the current S5-powered HomePod Mini will also get Siri AI compatibility later this year, along with updates to iOS 27.2."
Fine print on Apple's website does not mention this detail, at least as far as we have seen, so we have reached out to the company for comment.
For the Apple TV 4K, Apple's fine print did mention that Siri AI support will extend back to the second-generation Apple TV 4K from 2021, but we have not found any explicit fine print mention about Siri AI coming to the HomePod mini (1st generation).
Apple said setting up Siri AI on the HomePod mini 2 will require a paired iPhone or iPad model with Apple Intelligence support.

iPhone Duo Compromises: Everything You Have to Give Up
Apple's $1,999 iPhone Duo asks buyers to pay more for a folding screen while accepting almost 40 compromises compared with the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, spanning camera capabilities, everyday usability, and ownership costs.
At equivalent storage capacities, the iPhone Duo costs $800 more than the iPhone 18 Pro and $700 more than the Pro Max. Its main attraction is a radically different design: a 5.4-inch outer display opens into a 7.6-inch inner display, providing more space for reading and viewing content, with the ability to use apps side by side.
All three devices share a number of key features, including the A20 Pro chip, ProMotion displays with refresh rates up to 120Hz, a 48-megapixel Ultra Wide camera, MagSafe, and USB-C with USB 3 speeds. However, choosing the foldable means giving up some familiar features and accepting differences in how the phone feels, works, and fits into a daily routine.

How CarPlay entitlements work, and why they're a problem for HomeView
It's a bafflingly analog process to be given permission to develop for CarPlay, and the HomeView relies on that entitlement. Apple needs to simplify HomeView app approval so developers aren't stuck working through a process designed for cars.HomeView needs a simpler CarPlay app approval processHomeView supports compatible CarPlay audio and video apps, but developers must first secure Apple's approval to support CarPlay. That ties its third-party media selection to a process built for in-car software, which Apple needs to streamline for home apps.As Apple explains, compatible CarPlay audio and video apps work on HomeView without developers modifying them. Get ready for HomeView by checking CarPlay apps on your iPhone
With Apple HomeView arriving November 13, you can get ready by checking which apps on your iPhone already support the CarPlay features that work on Apple's new smart display. Here's how to do it.Apple HomeViewApple's HomeView starts at $299 and brings music, video, smart home controls, and other features to a 7-inch screen. However, the device doesn't have its own App Store, so you can't simply download third-party apps directly onto it.Instead, Apple is using existing CarPlay support for third-party audio and video apps. Developers don't have to modify those apps for HomeView, which means you may already have compatible software installed on your iPhone. The easiest way to check is through your iPhone's CarPlay settings. There's a catch, though, because you'll need to have previously connected your iPhone to a vehicle that supports CarPlay. Continue Reading on AppleInsider | Discuss on our Forums

Apple HomeView finally offers a simpler alternative to Home Assistant
After all the rumors, the Apple HomeView is official, and it finally turns the Home app into something that comes close to what Home Assistant users have been enjoying for years.HomeView is the smart home hub we've been waiting forAs the owner of a home full of HomeKit-compatible smart gear, you generally have to make do with the Home app. But for all the benefits of HomeKit, like security and privacy, the terrible Home app constantly undermines everything Apple has worked on.As someone who has long lusted after professionally installed smart home setups with fancy hub displays, the Home app on an iPad just doesn't cut it. That has always led me to dabble with Home Assistant, if only to be able to build my own dashboard that looks and works like something from this decade. WhatsApp Now Lets Anyone Join Calls, No Account Needed
Popular Meta chat app WhatsApp today gained guest calling, a feature that lets users invite anyone to join a voice or video call, even if the invitee doesn't have a WhatsApp account.
WhatsApp says everyone has access to free, end-to-end encrypted calls with no time limits and support for up to 32 people at once.
A guest joining a call needs permission from the call host, and guests will show up in a waiting room until the host lets them in. Guests cannot see other participants' phone numbers, send messages, or add others to the call, and hosts can remove them from the call at any time. Guests have access to screen sharing for reviewing materials, thumbs up and heart emoji reactions, and a raised hand to ask a question.
WhatsApp users can start a guest call through the Calls tab. Tap "+" to create a call link and then send the link to anyone. WhatsApp calls can be joined in a computer browser with a WhatsApp call link.
WhatsApp says that it plans to roll out calendar integrations later this year

AppleCare+ Launched 15 Years Ago Today
AppleCare+ became available for the first time 15 years ago today, on October 14, 2011, alongside the iPhone 4S, following its announcement ten days earlier. The previous $69 AppleCare Protection Plan in the United States extended hardware repair coverage and technical support to two years, but excluded accidental damage.
AppleCare+ cost $99, retaining that two-year term while adding coverage for two accidental damage incidents, each with a $49 service fee. Apple Reportedly Planning Large iPhone 18 Production Run
Apple is reportedly preparing a substantial production run for the standard iPhone 18, following the iPhone 17's success as the world's best-selling smartphone.
In a new Weibo post, the leaker known as "Fixed Focus Digital" claimed that production of the standard iPhone 18 is scheduled to start in late November, describing the volume of inventory being prepared as "quite large."
Its predecessor has likely given Apple considerable reason for confidence. Following the iPhone 17's initial pre-order weekend, Apple reportedly instructed two suppliers to increase daily output by at least 30%, according to The Information. Counterpoint Research later reported that the standard iPhone 17 led global smartphone sales in both the first and second quarters of 2026. It accounted for 6% of worldwide smartphone unit sales in each quarter, outselling even the iPhone 17 Pro Max and iPhone 17 Pro.

Apple Says These Products Are Now Obsolete
Apple today added the 12-inch MacBook (2017), iPad (6th generation), and BeatsX headphones to the obsolete products list on its website.
Apple considers a product to be obsolete once seven years have passed since it last distributed the product for sale, including to resellers.
Apple Stores and Apple Authorized Service Providers are instructed to discontinue hardware service for obsolete products and generally cannot order parts for these products as a result. However, Apple says MacBooks may remain eligible for battery replacements for up to 10 years after distribution ended, subject to parts availability.
Apple discontinued the Intel-based 12-inch MacBook entirely in 2019, and it has yet to offer a sub-13-inch MacBook model with Apple silicon.Tag: Vintage and Obsolete Apple ProductsThis article, "Apple Says These Products Are Now Obsolete" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

Apple Launched iPhone 4S With Siri 15 Years Ago Today
Today marks the 15th anniversary of the iPhone 4S launch, introducing Siri as a built-in feature of the iPhone for the first time.
The iPhone 4S went on sale on October 14, 2011, ten days after its announcement. It initially launched in the United States, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, and the United Kingdom, retaining the iPhone 4's glass and stainless steel design while introducing substantial internal improvements.
The device's defining addition was Siri, which allowed users to make calls, send messages, create reminders, schedule appointments, and ask questions using natural language. Apple highlighted the assistant's ability to interpret requests in context, such as understanding that a question about needing an umbrella was a request for the weather forecast.
Siri initially launched in beta, supporting English localized for the United States, United Kingdom, and Australia, alongside French and German. The assistant was exclusive to the iPhone 4S, so owners of older iPhones could

Apple HomeView Includes Temperature and Humidity Sensors
Apple's new HomeView includes temperature and humidity sensing, allowing the smart home hub to monitor indoor conditions and supply readings to the new thermostats developed with LG Electronics and Schneider Electric.
Apple's technical specifications confirm that both the tabletop and wall-mounted HomeView have a temperature and humidity sensor. The hardware is listed alongside the ambient light sensor and accelerometer.
There are several limitations for the HomeView's readings. Temperature and humidity sensing is optimized for indoor domestic environments with ambient temperatures around 59°F to 86°F, and relative humidity around 30% to 70%.
Accuracy may decrease when HomeView plays audio at high volume for an extended period. The sensors also require time to calibrate immediately after startup before results appear.
According to Apple, the LG and Schneider Electric thermostats in the "Apple Home Collection" can obtain temperature and humidity readings from multiple rooms using sensors built in

The HomePod mini 2 costs $149 in the United States, $20 more than its predecessor's last Apple price of $129. While the original launched for $99 in 2020, Apple raised its price in June 2026. With many core features carried over, is the new model worth upgrading to, and should you consider a discounted original instead?

Apple has appealed the $5.7B Taction verdict, arguing jury got it all wrong
A new filing suggests that not only does Apple not violate Taction's patents, but the jury arrived at the record $5.7 billion in damages "based on guesswork" and should be tossed.Apple is facing a record fine over patentsIn April 2021, Taction Technology sued Apple for allegedly infringing on two Taction patents dealing with haptic feedback. It argued that Apple's Taptic Engine used in the Apple Watch was a reverse-engineered copy of the technology.A jury ruled in favor of Taction in September, finding that Apple infringed, though not willfully. A new filing from Apple on Tuesday states that not only did the jury award the damages based on guesswork, but that the findings themselves are contradictory. Will the Full-Sized HomePod Get Siri AI? Apple's Website Offers a Clue
Apple today introduced the HomePod mini 2, but the full-sized HomePod was not updated. Nevertheless, the alt text for Apple's full-sized HomePod image shown at the bottom of the HomePod order page now mentions a "multi-colored Siri AI glow on top," suggesting that the larger HomePod might eventually gain support for Siri AI.
Of course, it is also possible that Apple simply made an error.
The new HomePod mini 2 will feature Siri AI, but not right away, with support set to arrive in a "future software update." Apple did not provide a timeframe for the update. Siri AI on the HomePod mini 2 will require a paired iPhone or iPad model that supports Apple Intelligence for requests that involve a user's personal context.
Bloomberg's Mark Gurman previously reported that Apple planned to update the full-sized HomePod "eventually." Siri AI support might end up being limited to a new model of the speaker, but Apple's plans are unknown at this time.Related Roundup: HomePodTags: Siri, Siri AIBuyer's Guide: HomeP

Apple Releases Third Public Betas of iOS 27.2 and macOS Golden Gate 27.2
Apple today seeded the third betas of iOS 27.2, iPadOS 27.2, macOS Golden Gate 27.2, and watchOS 27.2. The software comes a few hours after Apple provided the betas to developers.
To get the new betas, you can sign up on Apple's beta testing website. After you're signed up, the betas can be installed through the Software Update section in the Settings app on each device.
iOS 27.2 includes the redesigned Health app that Apple introduced at its September iPhone event. It features new Insights and Longevity tabs with more insight into health and fitness data. There's also a Health Age feature that uses your metrics to determine your fitness age vs. your actual age.
In the Apple TV app, there are new profile options, and Siri AI is now available in French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish.
There are a few other features in the updates, which are listed in our iOS 27.2 guide.Related Roundups: iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS Golden GateRelated Forums: iOS 27, macOS Golden GateThis article, "Apple Re

iOS 27.2 Adds New Apple Music Icon
In the fourth beta of iOS 27.2, Apple updated the Apple Music icon. The new icon is black and white, replacing the prior red and white icon.
In light mode, the logo is black on a white background, and in dark mode, it's white on a black background.
The refreshed Music app icon comes after Apple debuted a new Apple Music logo in an earlier version of iOS 27.2 and in marketing materials for its recent Apple Music Hall announcement.
Along with a new icon, the Apple Music app in iOS 27.2 beta 4 has blue highlights for the selected navigation bar icon rather than red, and text in the Music app's settings also swaps red for blue. Apple Music widgets also have a black background instead of a red background, suggesting Apple is phasing out much of the red branding for the music service.Related Roundups: iOS 27, iPadOS 27Tag: Apple MusicRelated Forum: iOS 27This article, "iOS 27.2 Adds New Apple Music Icon" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums
