iPhone 18 Pro is eSIM-Only in These Countries
Apple has been phasing out the SIM card tray on iPhones, with the latest models relying solely on eSIM technology in select countries.
According to Apple, the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max support eSIMs only in these countries and regions:
Bahrain
Canada
Guam
Japan
Kuwait
Mexico
Oman
Qatar
Saudi Arabia
United Arab Emirates
United States
U.S. Virgin Islands
iPhone 17 Pro models are eSIM-only in the same countries, so there is no change this year.
iPhone 18 Pro models continue to have a tray for a physical SIM card in all other countries around the world, including in the U.K. and the rest of Europe.
If you are unaware, an eSIM is essentially a digital version of a SIM card.

Apple Watch Series 12 comes in a refreshed selection of case finishes and materials, including ceramic.
Here's a breakdown of the case types, finishes, and pricing across the new Apple Watch lineup:

iPhone Duo Will Ship With iOS 27.1, Hinting at Update's Release Date
Apple says the iPhone Duo will ship with iOS 27.1 when it launches this October, which gives us a hint at when the first major iOS 27 update will come out.
The iPhone Duo will be available on October 23, so iOS 27.1 should be released shortly before that date. Last year, iOS 26.1 didn't come out until November 3, but we're expecting iOS 27.1 about two weeks earlier.
iOS 27.1 will include updated app layouts built for the iPhone Duo's dual displays and its new vertical dock.
The iPhone 18 Pro models will ship with iOS 27 and are set to launch on September 18, so the iPhone Duo is coming just over a month later. iOS 27 will launch on September 14.

Apple today announced "Audio Intelligence," a new suite of Apple Intelligence-powered features for the Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 that use the built-in microphone to help users catch missed moments in conversation and stay aware of important sounds.
The Apple Watch's Audio Intelligence comprises four features:
Siri Recap: Uses ambient listening to generate high-level notes from conversations, such as takeaways from a team meeting or a parent-teacher conference, producing an Apple Intelligence-generated title, summary, and key points reviewable in the Siri app.
Live Rewind: Lets users "go back in time for 15 seconds," transcribing and displaying what was just said in a conversation with a double press of the Digital Crown.

iPhone Duo Only Works With the $79 USB-C Apple Pencil, Not the Apple Pencil Pro
The iPhone Duo will work with the Apple Pencil, but support is limited. Apple says that you need the Apple Pencil with USB-C for the iPhone Duo, so if you have the Apple Pencil Pro, you may be out of luck.
It's likely the iPhone Duo doesn't support the Apple Pencil Pro because there's no magnetic surface for charging the pencil. The Apple Pencil Pro charges magnetically when connected to a compatible iPad, while the Apple Pencil with USB-C charges with a USB-C port hidden behind a sliding cap.
The Apple Pencil with USB-C does not support pressure sensitivity, double-tap, barrel roll, haptic feedback, squeeze, or Find My, but it does have tilt sensitivity. Apple charges $79 for the Apple Pencil with USB-C and $129 for the Apple Pencil Pro.
Apple says that an Apple Pencil will work with both the inner and outer iPhone Duo displays. It's the first iPhone that works with Apple Pencil.

iPhone Duo Doesn't Have an Action Button
The iPhone Duo does not include an Action Button, according to the device's technical specifications page. The page's diagram., highlights volume up/down buttons at the top, Camera Control and side buttons on the right side, a USB-C port at the bottom, and microphones and speakers at the top and bottom.
On the iPhone 18 Pro models and earlier, the Action Button is located on the left side of the iPhone right above the volume up/down buttons.
The Action Button is a customizable button that can be assigned one of several actions. It can do things like activate Silent mode (the default), set a Focus, turn on the Flashlight, record a Voice Memo, activate Visual Intelligence, or run a Shortcut.
Apple introduced the Action Button with the iPhone 15 Pro, and all iPhones released since then have included the feature. The iPhone Duo is the first iPhone that has no option for a physical mute toggle. Silent mode will need to be turned on via Control Center.

Apple has confirmed the battery capacities for the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max models that the company announced earlier today.
Apple is required to publish energy labels on its iPhone product pages in the EU, and they reveal the official mAh battery capacities for the devices.
Here are the battery capacities for the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max models that still have a SIM card tray, according to Apple:
iPhone 18 Pro: 4,056 mAh (+1.7% vs. iPhone 17 Pro's 3,988 mAh)
iPhone 18 Pro Max: 5,391 mAh (+11.7% vs. iPhone 17 Pro Max's 4,823 mAh)
Notably, the iPhone 18 Pro Max has received a much larger battery life increase than the iPhone 18 Pro did compared to the previous generation.

AirPods 5 Include ANC as Standard, Pricier Variant Now Gatekeeps Wireless Charging Instead
Apple no longer charges extra for Active Noise Cancellation on AirPods, folding it into the $129 AirPods 5 instead of reserving it for the higher-end model.
Apple today announced the AirPods 5. ANC now comes standard on the base model rather than being exclusive to its pricier variant, as it was with the outgoing AirPods 4, which cost $129 without ANC and $179 with it.
There is still a pricier version of the AirPods 5, called "AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case." This model starts at $149 and includes a force sensor with swiping volume controls, an hour of additional battery life with ANC enabled, and wireless charging. iPhone 18 Pro Max Is Heavier Than iPhone 17 Pro Max, Not Thicker
Despite rumors of an increase in thickness, the iPhone 18 Pro Max has the same physical dimensions as the iPhone 17 Pro Max. It is 163.4mm x 78mm x 8.75mm, but it did get 16 grams heavier.
Apple says the iPhone 18 Pro Max weighs 249 grams, while the iPhone 17 Pro Max weighed 233 grams, making it the heaviest non-folding iPhone to date. It is heavier than the iPhone 14 Pro Max, which was previously Apple's weightiest iPhone at 240 grams.
The iPhone 18 Pro weighs 211 grams, up from 206 grams in the prior-generation model. Apple may have increased battery size even though dimensions didn't change, or the new vapor chamber cooling system may be heavier heavier.
There's a bigger vapor chamber in the iPhone 18 Pro models that takes up three times more surface area to dissipate more heat. The A20 Pro is able to deliver up to 40 percent better sustained performance than the A19 Pro thanks to the next-generation vapor chamber and "more thermally conductive materials."

Samsung Mocks iPhone Duo
Samsung took to social media today to mock the iPhone Duo while Apple announced the device.
In a series of sarcastic posts that did not explicitly mention Apple or the iPhone Duo, Samsung made comments like "Let us know when you're done reheating our leftovers" and "Was it exciting? No. Did it happen? Yes."
Samsung used an #ItsTimeToSwitch hashtag in some of its posts.
Launching on Friday, October 23, the iPhone Duo will compete with Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold8 and other foldable devices already on the market. Apple raised the base price of the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max by $100 compared to the iPhone 17 Pro models, but if you want more storage, those price increases are even higher.
The iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199 for 256GB of storage, while the iPhone 17 Pro started at $1,099. There's a $200 increase if you go up to 512GB ($1,399), but if you want 1TB of storage, you're going to be paying $300 more.
A 1TB iPhone 18 Pro is priced at $1,799, but a 1TB iPhone 17 Pro was $1,499. There's a new 2TB option for the Pro this year, and it's priced at $2,399.
A 1TB iPhone 17 Pro Max was $1,599, but this year, it'll cost you $1,899 to get a 1TB iPhone 18 Pro Max. The 2TB iPhone 18 Pro Max option is even more expensive at $2,499, a $500 increase over the 2TB iPhone 17 Pro Max price.

Apple Adds AppleCare One Family Plan for Up to Six People
Apple today announced AppleCare One Family, a new option for U.S. customers that extends AppleCare coverage to every eligible device across an Apple Family Sharing group of up to six people for one fixed monthly price.
AppleCare One Family costs $49.99 per month and includes all of the same benefits as AppleCare+, such as coverage for accidental damage like drops and spills, battery replacement service, and priority support from Apple Experts. It also includes theft and loss protection for eligible iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch models, and allows six total claims per year across the group.
Once a subscriber signs up, they can add devices from their iPhone, iPad, or Mac, including "most devices less than four years old and in good working condition." Newly purchased devices are added automatically at no extra cost, and the price stays the same regardless of how many eligible products end up being covered.

iPhone 18 Pro Introduces 'Apple Reference Image' to Verify Photo Authenticity
Apple today announced Apple Reference Image, a new opt-in feature for the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max that helps users to prove a photo hasn't been altered since it was taken.
Apple Reference Image is powered by a new sensor in the Main camera that signs sensor data at the pixel level at the moment of capture. When a photo is taken in the new Reference mode, that signed data is sent to Private Cloud Compute, which develops it into what Apple calls an unalterable reference image, "like having a digital negative."
Reference images appear in the Photos app alongside the corresponding photo, letting users visually compare the two to check whether any edits were made. Apple is also opening APIs in iOS, iPadOS, and macOS 27 so third-party apps can display these reference images.

Apple does not advertise the amount of RAM included in the iPhone 18 Pro models, but MacRumors has confirmed this info in the latest version of Xcode 27.

iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max Have Different Modems
It looks like the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max may have different modems inside. On Apple's technical specifications page for the new devices, the iPhone 18 Pro lists Apple's C2 modem, but the iPhone 18 Pro Max lists no modem at all.
The same information is also listed on Apple's announcement for the iPhone 18 Pro models.
Both models feature N1, an Apple-designed wireless networking chip that enables Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread. iPhone 18 Pro introduces C2, Apple's next-generation cellular modem system, which brings AI-powered improvements to cellular quality and reliability.
The lack of a C2 mention for the Pro Max might seem like a mistake at first glance, but the separate Pro and Pro Max model numbers actually list different LTE bands. On the U.S. Pro specification list, there's a Band 106, but there's no Band 106 on the Pro Max list.

iPhone 18 Pro's Redesigned Vapor Chamber Triples Cooling Surface Area
Apple today announced a redesigned thermal system for iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, built around a next-generation vapor chamber with three times the surface area of the one in iPhone 17 Pro.
The new vapor chamber constantly cycles deionized water throughout the system for significantly improved cooling performance, allowing the A20 Pro chip to sustain higher performance for longer under heavy workloads.
Apple redesigned the silicon packaging with "custom packaging inspired by our M-series chips," placing the silicon die and memory side by side rather than stacked, which removes the memory from the chip's thermal path and lets the A20 Pro connect directly to the vapor chamber.

New Texture and Grain Controls Coming to Photographic Styles With iPhone 18 Pro
Apple today announced new texture and grain controls for Photographic Styles with the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max.
Photographic Styles are tone presets that adjust the color and warmth of a photo as it is captured, rather than as a filter applied afterward, while preserving skin tones.
The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max gain a redesigned computational imaging pipeline for the 48-megapixel Fusion Main camera that Apple says produces sharper, more detailed shots. The new texture and grain controls build on that pipeline, allowing users to further dial in their desired appearance for more creative control over their photos.

In the fine print of Apple's announcement of the Health Sensing features coming to the Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4, Apple says it will have usage limits on Siri AI, intelligent photo editing tools, Image Playground, and Apple Foundation Cloud models in the Shortcuts app.

iPhone Duo Battery Life Depends on Which Screen You Use
The iPhone Duo has what Apple is calling an "iPhone-first dual battery system" with one battery on each side of the device. Apple optimized physical space for battery capacity to make sure that the battery lasts as long as possible.
When using the larger 7.6-inch inner display (unfolded), the battery lasts for up to 31 hours of video playback.
If you're using just the 5.4-inch outer display, the battery lasts for up to 44 hours when watching video.
With Apple's typical use metric, which includes equal use of both screens, the battery lasts for up to 24 hours. Typical use includes a mix of messaging, photo capture, listening to music, social app use, streaming video, playing games, web browsing, and navigation. Apple says it is based on median usage across iPhone users.

iPhone 18 Pro Models and iPhone Duo Feature Apple's New C2 Modem
Apple today unveiled new iPhone 18 Pro models and the iPhone Duo – the company's first foldable iPhone – and all three devices feature Apple's new custom-designed C2 modem for 5G connectivity.
Prior to today's announcements, there was speculation that Apple's C2 in-house modem would not support mmWave 5G in the U.S., and that the company would once again rely on Qualcomm to fill the gap for American carriers. Apparently, that's not the case.
Apple says the C2 brings AI-powered improvements to cellular quality and reliability, and now supports mmWave in the U.S. The company claims the C2 also delivers meaningfully faster uploads when compared to C1X while consuming 15 percent less energy.
As for mmWave support, Apple's U.S. specifications list bands n258, n260, and n261, alongside sub-6GHz 5G with 4×4 MIMO, but the UK specifications list sub-6GHz only.
Meanwhile, both models feature the N1, an Apple-designed wireless networking chip that enables Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread support.

iPhone 18 Pro Gains Manual Aperture, Shutter Speed Controls, and More
Apple today announced Pro Controls, a new customizable camera interface for the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max that lets users manually adjust aperture, shutter speed, and white balance, or check exposure levels with a live histogram.
Pro Controls is built around the variable aperture on the new Main camera. Six laser-cut blades move smoothly between four aperture settings, and the Camera app can adjust aperture automatically based on depth of field and lighting, or users can take manual control themselves for what Apple calls "truly unique shots that weren't possible before" on an iPhone.
Pro Controls works across both photo and video capture. It also introduces Smart Focus Tracking, which uses on-device AI models to lock onto a subject and maintain focus even if that subject briefly leaves the frame and comes back into view.

iPhone Duo Gets Its Own Case and Folio With Kickstand
Apple today introduced two dedicated accessories for iPhone Duo, its Case and a Folio with Kickstand.
The iPhone Duo Case is a thin, two-part design that wraps around both the front and back of the device. It uses built-in magnets that align with th iPhone Duo for what Apple calls a "magical attach experience." The case is made from polycarbonate with a matte coating and comes in Sand and Navy Blue.
The iPhone Duo Folio with Kickstand takes a different approach, using TechWoven, Apple's custom technical fabric, and covering only the back of the device rather than wrapping the edges. It includes an integrated kickstand that snaps flush against the case when not in use and props up at a range of angles for reading, watching video, or FaceTime calls. It uses the same magnetic alignment, and Apple says it is able to charge via MagSafe behind the kickstand, even when it's propped open. The Folio with Kickstand is available in Taupe and Navy Blue.

macOS Golden Gate Release Candidate Now Available
Apple today seeded the release candidate version of macOS Golden Gate, with the update coming a week after Apple seeded the eighth beta. The release candidate is the final version of macOS Golden Gate that developers and beta testers will get before the software sees a public launch.
Tessters can download macOS Golden Gate by going to System Settings > General > Software Update. Beta Updates will need to be enabled, and a free developer account is required.
macOS Golden Gate includes multiple design improvements. Liquid Glass opacity has been improved to increase readability, there's a slider for controlling the level of transparency, and changes to shadowing make it easier to tell when a window is active. Following the announcement of the iPhone 18 Pro models today, Apple discontinued the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max.
Apple usually retires its Pro models with the release of their successors, and this year that's no different. Both the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max are no longer available on Apple's online store.
The iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max were introduced in September 2025, at Apple's "Awe dropping" event and released later the same month. Both models are powered by the A19 Pro chip and feature triple-array rear camera systems, all of which have 48-megapixel lenses, with one being a 48-megapixel Telephoto camera offering 4x optical zoom and up to 8x optical-quality zoom. There's also a 18-megapixel Center Stage front camera.

iPhone Duo Supports MagSafe Charging
Rumors about the foldable iPhone were unclear on whether it would have MagSafe charging, but it turns out the iPhone Duo does indeed have a magnetic charging array.
Tech specs for the device say it supports MagSafe wireless charging at up to 25W, the same as the iPhone 18 Pro models. It also supports Qi2.2 25W wireless charging when using third-party accessories.
Faster wired charging is available, with the iPhone Duo charging to 50 percent in a 20-minute period. That's a little bit slower than the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, which can charge to 50 percent in 15 minutes.

iPhone Duo: Pricing, Pre-Orders, and Release Date Announced
Apple's all-new foldable iPhone Duo will be available to pre-order starting on Friday, October 16 at 5 a.m. Pacific Time, and the device will be released on Friday, October 23, in the U.S. and more than 70 other countries and regions, including Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Japan, Singapore, the U.K., and others.
iPhone Duo will launch in 28 more countries and regions on Friday, October 30.
In the U.S., pricing will start at $1,999 for a configuration with 256GB of storage. There are two color options: Star White and Night Sky.

Apple Announces Apple Watch Ultra 4 With Two-Day Battery Life and Upgraded Health Tracking
Apple today announced the Apple Watch Ultra 4, featuring a new S11 chip, a redesigned health sensing system, and a larger battery that Apple says delivers two days of battery life.
With improved power efficiency, Ultra 4 offers up to 18 hours of workout tracking with full GPS and heart rate monitoring, or 45 hours in its maximum extended workout mode. It comes in Black and Natural titanium, alongside new band colors and a new titanium Hermès band.
The redesigned health sensing system features a larger electrode surface for improved skin contact during ECG readings, photodiodes arranged in a ring to capture light more efficiently, and larger, more power-efficient green LEDs for heart rate tracking.

iPhone 18 Pro: Pre-Orders and Release Date Announced
Apple today announced that the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max will be available to pre-order starting Saturday, September 12 at 5 a.m. Pacific Time / 8 a.m. Eastern Time. The devices will then be released on Friday, September 18.
The initial launch countries include the U.S., Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Colombia, France, Germany, India, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Singapore, South Korea, Türkiye, the United Arab Emirates, the U.K., Vietnam, and others.
The devices will be available in 20 other countries starting Friday, September 25.

Apple Announces iOS 27 Release Date
At its event today unveiling the iPhone 18 Pro, AirPods 5, Apple Watch Series 12, and more, Apple announced that iOS 27 will be released later this month.
iOS 27 has already been available as a developer beta since June and as a public beta since July, and Apple today said that the update will be released for all users with a compatible iPhone model on Monday, September 14.
iOS 27 is compatible with the exact same iPhone models as iOS 26, meaning the update will be available for the iPhone 11 series and newer.

Apple Extends Free Satellite Access for iPhone 14, 15, and 16 Users
Apple today announced it is extending free access to satellite features for an additional year for existing iPhone 14, iPhone 15, and iPhone 16 users.
The extension applies to devices activated in a country that supports Apple's satellite features prior to midnight Pacific Time on September 9. Apple revealed the update in its press release for the new iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max.
This marks at least the third time Apple has extended free access to the features for iPhone 14 users, whose satellite trial was originally set to run for two years from the phone's launch in November 2022 before Apple pushed the expiration date back in 2025 and again this year. Free access for iPhone 15 users, whose trial was set to expire this year, has similarly been extended, and iPhone 16 owners are now covered by the same rolling extension for the first time.

iPhone 18 Pro Starts at $1,199, Pro Max at $1,299
Apple today announced the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, with pricing starting at $1,199 for the Pro model and $1,299 for the Pro Max, both with 256GB of storage as the base configuration.
The increase amounts to $100 over the equivalent iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max pricing, matching what Bloomberg's Mark Gurman had predicted ahead of today's event. That is a smaller jump than many analysts had floated over the summer.
Both models now offer a 2TB storage option for the first time, sitting above the previous 1TB ceiling for an added cost.
Apple is also offering the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max through its Apple Upgrade program, which starts at $34.99 a month over 24 months and can come in lower for customers who trade-in an eligible device. Separately, customers trading in an iPhone 14 or newer toward a new purchase can get up to $1,200 off.

Apple Reveals iPhone 18 Pro Models Will Be Available in Four New Colors
Apple at its annual fall iPhone event has revealed that the new iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max models will be available in four new colors.
Apple describes the new colors as a Deep Black, a refined Silver, a new Glacier Blue, and Burgundy – calling the latter a "sophisticated and unique new color" that's obviously meant to be a successor to the iPhone 17 Pro's Cosmic Orange.
In addition, the rear aluminum and Ceramic Shield glass area are now more color-matched compared to the iPhone 17 Pro models, which had a noticeable glazed effect on the rear of the devices.

Apple Unveils A20 Pro as First 2nm Smartphone Chip
Apple today revealed the A20 Pro chip in the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, built on a brand new architecture using 2nm process technology.
Apple described the A20 Pro as "an exceptional chip that sets a new bar for mobile computing." The chip has a 6-core CPU design with two new super cores that Apple says are up to 20% faster, calling them "desktop class" and "the fastest in any smartphone," alongside four new efficiency cores.
The GPU has also been redesigned with a 7-core layout that Apple says delivers up to 40% faster graphics performance and increased memory bandwidth. New neural accelerators built into the GPU offer twice the FP8 performance of the previous generation, which helps the chip run large language models locally on the device.

Both iPhone 18 Pro Models Feature Variable Aperture Camera
Apple has revealed at its "Surprise and Shine" event that both iPhone 18 Pro models will be equipped with a variable aperture camera.
Prior to this announcement, some rumours suggested that only the iPhone 18 Pro Max would feature a variable aperture lens, but it seems that both models will benefit from the technology.
Apple says it has developed a system of six laser-cut blades, each thinner than a human hair, to create the aperture lens. The blades are made of a specialized polymer composite for the right balance of mass flexibility and durability.
The aperture adjusts automatically based on the scene. When you're in a darker environment, for example, the aperture opens to let in around 50% more light.
"iPhone 18 Pro has a new 48 megapixel fusion main camera with variable aperture for creative control that wasn't possible before," said Apple. "This is the most advanced camera we've ever made."

Apple Announces iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max
Apple today unveiled the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, which look very similar to the iPhone 17 Pro models but have several upgrades.
The devices are equipped with the A20 Pro chip and feature longer battery life compared to the previous-generation models.
Apple says the A20 Pro chip has up to a 20% faster 6-core GPU and up to a 40% faster 7-core GPU compared to the A19 Pro chip, plus a dual Neural Engine for faster AI performance.
The vapor chamber cooling system has been revamped in the iPhone 18 Pro models, so the devices have even better thermal management to prevent overheating.

Mac Mini vs. Mac Studio Buyer's Guide: 20 Differences Compared
Apple announced new Mac mini and Mac Studio models last month, with both available to pre-order now. It is the first time in years that Apple has revised its two desktop Macs simultaneously, so which should you choose?
There are now two desktop Macs to choose from following the discontinuation of the Mac Pro, but the prices have moved sharply. The Mac Studio starts at $2,499 and rises to $5,499 for the M5 Ultra model, while the Mac mini starts at $899 with the M6 chip and $1,699 with the M5 Pro.
Those prices come on top of the across-the-board Mac and iPad increases Apple made in June, which took the Mac mini from $599 to $799, the M4 Pro configuration from $1,399 to $1,599, and the Mac Studio from $1,999 to $2,499. The M5 Ultra adds a further $200 to the post-June M3 Ultra price, putting it $1,500 above what the M3 Ultra cost at launch.

Apple Shares Mysterious Teaser Video Before 'iPhone Duo' Event Today
Apple will be holding an event today starting at 10 a.m. Pacific Time, with the company expected to unveil new iPhones and much more.
Ahead of the event, Apple's new CEO John Ternus just shared a mysterious teaser video. The short clip appears to show a beam of light that is shining onto the edge of an iPhone. The light is coming from a hexagonal shape that changes size, which could hint at the iPhone 18 Pro's rumored mechanical aperture upgrade.
The main 48-megapixel Fusion camera on the iPhone 18 Pro and/or iPhone 18 Pro Max is rumored to have a variable aperture, which would allow users to control the amount of light that passes through the camera's lens and reaches the sensor. This would provide greater control over depth of field. However, given that iPhones have smaller image sensors due to smartphone size constraints, it is unclear exactly how meaningful this improvement would be.

Apple Watch's New AI Day Summary Tracks These Activities
Leaker "pdfu" today shared additional code-level details about the Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4's new day summary feature, offering a clearer picture of what the AI tool will actually track.
In a new post on X, pdfu said that the summaries generated by the feature, referred to in code as "Ambient Sensing," include fields for time and date, location, meal information, and the people present along with their relationship to the user.

Leaked Video Shows iPhone 18 Pro's 3-in-1 Dynamic Island in Action
A leaker has activated Apple's upcoming three-item Dynamic Island mode inside the iOS 27 simulator, offering the first video demonstration of the new iPhone 18 Pro feature.
The leaker, known as pdfu, posted a video showing the Dynamic Island toggling between three simultaneous Live Activities, matching what Bloomberg's Mark Gurman described in his report earlier today. "The new Dynamic Island with 3 items is already supported in iOS 27," pdfu wrote.

iPhone 18 Pro Could Charge 25% Faster
Code found in iOS 27 suggests the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max could support a 33% higher charging rate than the iPhone 17 Pro models, according to a new discovery from the leaker known as "pdfu."
The findings apparently come from Apple's charging optimizer settings buried in iOS 27, which show the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max charging at a rate 33% higher than the iPhone 17 lineup. If Apple can maintain that higher rate throughout a charge, pdfu estimates it could cut around 25% off the time it takes to complete a typical fast-charging session.
Apple's first foldable iPhone does not appear to get the same treatment. The same code purportedly shows it charging at the same rate as the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro, rather than the faster rate expected for the new Pro models.

AirPods With Cameras Were Supposed to Debut Today, Now Delayed
Apple planned to introduce high-end in-ear AirPods with built-in cameras for analyzing the surrounding environment at today's event, but the launch has been pushed to next year, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports.

Apple to Offer Better Trade-In Pricing for Minor Cosmetic Damage
Apple will today expand its trade-in program to offer better pricing for devices with minor cosmetic defects, MacRumors understands.
Under Apple's current trade-in system, cosmetic issues such as small chips in the display glass have generally been treated the same way as far more serious damage, such as a cracked or smashed screen, resulting in a similarly steep cut to a device's trade-in value. That is set to change from today, with Apple introducing more granular pricing that better reflects a device's actual condition. Customers will apparently not receive less for their device under the new system.
The update is expected to take effect today once Apple's trade-in website comes back online. The change is said to apply in the vast majority of countries where Apple's trade-in program is offered, with only a small number of markets excluded.
Apple last adjusted its trade-in values in August, when it raised pricing across the iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch lineups. It is unclear whether today's

iPhone 18 Pro Details Purportedly Leaked By Verizon's AI Assistant
A series of screenshots shared with MacRumors today seemingly show Verizon's AI chat assistant answering detailed questions about the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, just hours before Apple's announcement event.
The screenshots were shared privately with MacRumors by X user "mehrtosh," who says the responses came from the "Ask Verizon" AI assistant built into the carrier's app. The conversation is timestamped September 8 at 1:48 to 1:52 p.m., the day before Apple's "Surprise and shine" event. iPhone 18 Pro Price Hike to Be Lower Than Expected
Apple will increase the price of its high-end iPhones by just $100 per model upon the announcement of the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports, which is a smaller bump than many had been bracing for ahead of today's event.
In June, Apple hiked the cost of all of its Macs, iPads, and home products in response to the global memory shortage, but chose to keep iPhone pricing intact at the time. That is widely expected to change today, with the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max expected to come in at a higher price than their predecessors.
Gurman's $100 figure comes in well below some of the more dire predictions floated over the summer. Analytics firm IDC had suggested increases of up to $200 for the Pro models, while GF Securities analyst Jeff Pu warned costs for the A20 Pro chip, RAM, and storage could push prices as much as $300 higher. Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 to Gain New AI Feature That Summarizes Your Day
The Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 models set to be unveiled today include a new privacy-focused feature that can analyze your day and provide a summary of what took place, including conversations you've had, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.
Gurman says the feature is designed to compete with the wave of recent AI wearables that promise to log and recall a user's day. Unlike some of those devices, Apple's system apparently cannot show a transcript and does not record or store audio, which is a distinction Apple is likely to promote on given the privacy concerns raised by always-listening AI hardware.
The feature will arrive alongside the new "Readiness" app, a variant of the existing Vitals app that Apple is introducing to compete more directly with wearable fitness software from Oura and Whoop. iPhone 18 Pro Dynamic Island to Shrink, Add Third Live Activity
Apple's upcoming iPhone 18 Pro will come with a narrower Dynamic Island that will allow it to display more Live Activities than the current iPhone 17 Pro, according to Bloomberg.

Mark Gurman reports that the new "smaller and improved" Dynamic Island on the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max will allow users to "toggle between three live tasks" at the top of their screen.
Previously, the Dynamic Island could only display up to two Live Activities at a time. This design has been in place since the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, which launched in 2022.
Otherwise, Gurman says the look of the iPhone 18 Pro models is similar to the iPhone 17 Pro models, save for a new "burgundy red" color option replacing the popular Cosmic Orange. Sky blue and Silver have also been reported previously as potential color options.

Apple will announce the new Apple Watch lineup later today, and Mark Gurman at Bloomberg has the early scoop. He reports that the Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 will include a new AI feature that ambiently listens to the microphone, GPS, and uses other sensor data, to generate daily recaps of what you did, including conversation summaries.

New product identifiers show up in Apple's backend, don't indicate release timing
Apple is set to reveal a range of new products during its "Surprise and Shine" event on Wednesday, but a new set of product identifiers likely aren't indicative of what's being announced.Device identifiers don't say anything about a product or when it will releaseProduct identifiers tell you very little about a product and often leave you guessing until they're found in official documentation for an already-released product. A list found in Apple's backend shows 37 new hardware identifiers for iPhones, Macs, and other products, but nothing else.According to the social media post from code sleuth Aaron Perris, these new identifiers appeared in Apple's backend. UK repeats demands for child safety features that Apple already made
Apple's child safety toolset is already robust and expanding with iOS 27, but the UK government isn't happy and continues to threaten legislation.Apple already offers tools and APIs for protecting children from content they shouldn't be viewing or sendingApple introduced Sensitive Content Warnings with iOS 17 in 2023 for child accounts and later introduced it as an option for adults. Several new features have been added since, including age verification systems in the UK, plus a comprehensive rethink of child safety with iOS 27 coming soon.However, according to a report from Bloomberg, these measures aren't enough and legislation may still be necessary. UK Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy has told the House of Commons that the government would introduce legislation on the matter, but didn't say when or to what extent.
