The most repairable AirPods ever are still a frustrating mess to get into

Apple's AirPods 5 have replaceable batteries in the earbuds, but the charging case remains inaccessible even with the best tools available. Here's how iFixit fared in its latest teardown.AirPods 5 are more repairable, barelyThe AirPods line has always been a thorn in Apple's side, at least when it comes to environmental responsibility. These earbuds and charging case have always been irreparable hunks of plastic destined for a garbage dump at the end of their short life. However, iFixit has discovered a small glimmer of hope in the AirPods 5. The long-running repairability score for AirPods has been zero, until the latest model received a slight bump to two. Continue Reading on AppleInsider | Discuss on our Forums

AirPods 5 Teardown: Batteries Removable, Case Still Tough

Repair site iFixit today took apart Apple's AirPods 5 for one of its traditional teardown videos. It turns out the new AirPods are slightly more repairable than prior models, but it's still not a simple home fix. The ‌AirPods 5‌ use pronged batteries that Apple previously used in the AirPods 3, but not the AirPods 4. The battery can be removed with a "nifty pair of tongs," and iFixit says the component is "intuitive to unplug." When the AirPods 3 used the pronged battery, there was no easy way to get into the earbud, but the ‌AirPods 5‌ are easier to pry open. iFixit was able get into the ‌AirPods 5‌ with a hair dryer to heat the adhesive and a clamp to hold the earbud in place. The left and right earbuds use different batteries with reversed polarity, so the battery from a left AirPod can't be swapped into a right AirPod, and vice versa. While the earbuds have a better repair score, iFixit said the case is "still a disaster" and difficult to get into without destroying it. iFixit gave the ‌AirP

iPhone 18 Pro Owners Complain of Speaker Crackling or Popping

Some iPhone 18 Pro owners have noticed an unusual crackling sound coming from the speaker of the device, leading to complaints on the MacRumors forums and Reddit. Users have called it a crackle, a faint tick or pop, or random clicking. Many say the problem is with the earpiece speaker, and both the ‌iPhone 18 Pro‌ and ‌iPhone 18 Pro‌ Max appear to be affected. Some people hear the sound consistently, while others hear it during app use, scrolling websites, when receiving notifications, when the keyboard pops up, or when making a call using a cellular connection. On affected units, reports suggest toggling Airplane Mode on and off triggers the sound, as does adjusting screen brightness quickly. Apple released iOS 27.0.1 yesterday to fix a bug that could cause ‌iPhone 18 Pro‌ models to restart when Face ID authentication fails. The release notes didn't mention a speaker fix, and early feedback says the update did not help. There are reports from people who returned their ‌iPhone 18 Pro‌ models onl

You Can 'Get Ready' for iPhone Duo Pre-Orders on October 12

People who plan to purchase an iPhone Duo can go through the "Get Ready" process starting on Monday, October 12. The new detail was added to the iPhone Duo product page yesterday, according to Reddit. Get Ready lets users select a preferred color and capacity, confirm their carrier status, choose accessories, choose an AppleCare+ plan, select a trade-in, add a payment method, and set a shipping and billing address. When pre-orders go live, Get Ready is helpful because it allows for one-tap ordering. It will be especially beneficial for the ‌iPhone Duo‌ because supplies are expected to be limited. Pre-orders could sell out within minutes given reports of production issues leading to supply constraints, and users who have Get Ready will be able to submit orders faster. ‌iPhone Duo‌ pre-orders will begin on Friday, October 16 at 5 a.m. Pacific Time or 8 a.m. Eastern Time. The device will launch on Friday, October 23. Pricing starts at $1,999.Related Roundup: iPhone DuoBuyer's Guide: iPhone Duo (Com

Apple Releases New AirPods Beta Firmware

Apple today released new beta firmware for the AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3, AirPods 4, AirPods 5, and AirPods Max 2. The firmware has a build number of 9B5042a and is rolling out for developers and public beta testers. There's no word on what's included in the firmware update because Apple doesn't offer notes for AirPods beta releases. When the AirPods are connected to an iPhone, iPad, or Mac running iOS 26, iPadOS 26, or macOS 26 or later, there is a beta firmware option that can be accessed in the AirPods settings interface. Toggling on beta updates allows users to install the beta firmware. Firmware updates can then be downloaded by connecting the AirPods to an Apple device and connecting them to power. It can take a few hours for new firmware to be installed because there is no software update option like there is for other Apple devices.Related Roundup: AirPods 5Buyer's Guide: AirPods (Buy Now)Related Forum: AirPodsThis article, "Apple Releases New AirPods Beta Firmware" first appeared on Ma

Apple Explains Why It Removed ICE Tracking Apps Last Year

In a July 2026 letter addressed to U.S. Representative Jamie Raskin (D-MD), Apple said its decision to remove ICEBlock and similar apps that crowdsourced the real-time locations of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents from the App Store was "prompted by concerns" about "agent safety," according to CNN's Clare Duffy. The report said the app removals were "prompted by concerns — including those raised by the Trump administration — about agent safety following a fatal shooting that left two detainees dead at a Dallas Immigration and Customs Enforcement office." Apple removed ICEBlock from the App Store in October 2025, leading Raskin to launch an investigation into the U.S. Justice Department's apparent role in the removal of the apps from the App Store and Google's Play Store, the report said. Apple's letter responding to Raskin had not previously been reported, according to CNN. When it removed ICEBlock from the ‌App Store‌, Apple said that the app violated guideline 1.1.1 of its Ap

Switch Siri AI for ChatGPT on Your Mac

In macOS 27 Golden Gate, Siri AI is a lot smarter than before, so it doesn't always flail and attempt to hand your questions over to ChatGPT. However, if you still prefer OpenAI's chatbot for certain queries, you can still ask for it explicitly. In macOS Tahoe, Siri would suggest passing a request to ChatGPT when it thought the chatbot could help. In macOS 27 though, ChatGPT only answers when you specifically ask it. There's also no setting that makes ChatGPT your default assistant – as things stand, you need to choose it for each query. Here's how it's done. Turn On the ChatGPT Extension Open System Settings. Click Siri in the sidebar. Click ChatGPT under "Extension." Turn on Use Extension. Choose whether to sign in with a ChatGPT account. If you sign in, your requests are saved to your ChatGPT chat history (OpenAI's privacy policies apply). AppleCare Guide: Is it Worth Paying For?

Most Apple products come with a one-year limited warranty that covers hardware failures and manufacturing defects, and up to 90 days of complimentary technical support. To extend your coverage further, Apple offers AppleCare+ and AppleCare One, with theft and loss coverage available for eligible devices. With the added cost, service fees, and varying prices across the Apple product lineup, is AppleCare worth paying for? Apple uses several similar names for different types of coverage: Standard warranty: Included with most Apple products at no extra cost. It generally covers manufacturing defects for one year. Apple Reportedly Planned to Replace 5,000 Support Employees With AI

Apple recently considered laying off about 5,000 support employees, but it has put those plans on hold indefinitely, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. The report said that Apple believed that AI-powered phone and web agents could take over some of the responsibilities performed by the employees who would have been let go, but Apple is no longer "currently looking to take such a step." Last month, we reported that customers who call the AppleCare phone number (1-800-APL-CARE) from the U.S. or Canada are now routed to an AI-powered support assistant. While many of Apple's phone systems already had a basic automated operator, the Apple Support phone line is now using a bot powered by generative AI. The virtual assistant can answer questions and provide step-by-step instructions for troubleshooting issues with your Apple products. It can still transfer you to a human advisor if it cannot answer a specific question, or if you ask to speak to a real person. It remains to be seen if Apple eventuall

Apple Planning to Launch Products Faster and More Often

Apple CEO John Ternus is undertaking efforts to restructure the company to accelerate product development and introduce new products more frequently, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. Ternus apparently wants Apple to "broaden its range of devices and create a leaner organization with a greater focus on engineering." One proposal under consideration is to rely less on Apple's traditional spring and fall product release cycles, and introduce new devices more quickly and throughout the year. Ternus has also purportedly indicated that Apple must become "more experimental" to remain competitive in the era of artificial intelligence. Other plans include eliminating some middle-management positions to reduce corporate hierarchy that separates engineers from senior executives. Ternus believes "Apple should hire fewer people, ask more of its existing engineers, and reduce organizational bloat." During a presentation, he reportedly showed a slide detailing annual headcount growth and argued that the "comp

New Apple TV 4K Hinted at in Support Document

Last week, MacRumors uncovered evidence of an Apple TV 4K (4th generation), and now an Apple support document has further hinted at a new model. Apple on Monday updated a support document related to lossless audio in Apple Music with the following fine print below the Apple TV 4K section:Hi-Res Lossless is available only on Apple TV 4K (3rd generation or later).Given the Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) is the current model, the "or later" wording is noteworthy, as it could mean that a new model is imminent. However, Apple could simply be future-proofing the document or have made a mistake. In any case, the support document adds to growing anticipation for a new Apple TV 4K, which is expected to be announced this October. The next Apple TV is rumored to have an A19 or A19 Pro chip, an increased 8GB to 12GB of RAM, Apple Intelligence and Siri AI support, an Apple-designed N1 chip with Wi-Fi 7 support, and a revised Siri Remote. Safety concerns forced ICEblock removal, Apple tells lawmaker

Apple has doubled down on its claims that removing ICEblock and similar apps from the App Store was necessary for safety, though chiefly because it was never going to admit to bowing to government pressure.ICEBlock in the App Store, pre-removalIn July 2025, the Department of Justice publicly threatened the developer of ICEblock, an app that let users say when Immigration and Enforcement Officers were spotted in an area. The app was intended to help people avoid trouble spots, such as the riots caused when ICE agents entered Los Angeles against the city mayor's orders.Apple is now being asked to justify how in October 2025, it subsequently removed ICEblock from the App Store. Only excerpts of Apple's latest comments have been reported, but CNN says that the company's July 2026 letter doubled down on safety as the reason for the removal. Here's Why iPhone Apps Were Crashing

iPhone apps with Google Analytics for Firebase integration were briefly crashing on Monday due to an issue with the analytics platform that has since been resolved. Affected apps should no longer be crashing, with no action required from developers. While the issue began shortly after Apple released iOS 27.0.1, the timing was coincidental, as apps were crashing on other iOS versions too. This article, "Here's Why iPhone Apps Were Crashing" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

iPhone Duo Reportedly Facing Production Problems Ahead of Launch

The iPhone Duo is reportedly facing production difficulties ahead of its October launch, with early output expected to be limited. A person said to be close to Foxconn's supply chain told China's Jiemian News that final assembly yields for Apple's first foldable iPhone were only slightly above 60% as of September 17. The source said that, under Apple's current quality standards, it could take another six months to a year for the assembly line to reach a mature yield. According to the source, Foxconn is repeatedly adjusting equipment, assembly processes, and production settings as it makes the ‌iPhone Duo‌ at scale. The source also said suppliers were waiting to see whether Apple would ease any quality requirements to accelerate production. The problems apparently extend beyond final assembly. Jiemian News said Samsung Display's foldable OLED panels and hinge components had experienced low yields, delayed deliveries, and design changes. Delays in those parts leave the assembler less time to tune i

I first talked about how much iPhone video stabilization impressed me when I tested it on the iPhone 13 Pro back in 2021. It’s been improved significantly since then, with both the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro having a version Apple refers to as “ultra-stabilized video.” While it doesn’t sound as sexy as some features, it makes a massive difference to the usability of the iPhone for handheld shooting – and my latest test really drove home just how good it is today … more…

iPhone Duo Gets a Virtual Walkman App Ahead of Launch

An indie developer has built an app that turns Apple's upcoming iPhone Duo into a virtual Walkman by using the foldable's hinge to mimic the classic cassette player's flip-open door. Creator Vidit Bhargava is calling the app Duo-Man, which was designed in BitRig's new iPhone Duo development environment. Bhargava's app lets users open the device to pick their music and "insert" a cassette on the 7.6-inch inner display, then snap it shut to start playback. Bhargava told TechCrunch he wanted to make the experience feel authentic, so he went so far as to record button clicks and static from a real Walkman for use in the app. Duo-Man won second place at the recent Bitrig hackathon in San Francisco, and his post about the app on X (Twitter) has gained more than 2.1 million views. Duo-Man offers the complete walkman experience on the iPhone Duo.
