Evernote updates iOS app, announces partnership with Post-It and Evernote Market at EC3 conference
Evernote, the go-to note-taking app for 75 million people, has announced the latest expansion of its empire today at its EC3 conference with the unveiling of Evernote Market and a partnership with Post-It. Yes; Post-It, where people's random ideas were stored before Evernote.
The partnership with Post-It, and its owner 3M, is particularly exciting. The companies are developing a special line of Post-It notepads that will allow users to take photos of their notes for seamless transferring and searching by color coding via Evernote. So if you find your desk so cluttered with stray Post-It's that it looks like a detective's dream board in the future Evernote will be able to help you quickly search and organize those ideas.

Truck Stop brings destructive mayhem to Mac
Do you like your racing games better when there's less actual racing and more white-knuckle crashes? Then you'll feel right at home with Truck Stop, an in-progress crash-em-up being worked on by a former member of Criterion Games, the same studio responsible for the highly popular Burnout franchise.
Some of the most fun you could have in the Burnout titles was in "Crash" mode, where you were tasked not with reaching a finish line, but with destroying as much of the game world as possible. Truck Stop appears to continue this tradition, and while the current, unfinished version of the game is only available for Windows, it is slated to hit Mac and Linux as it crashes it way towards a proper release. News: Kopi intros Kbar Multiple with iPad charging ports
Kopi has announced Kbar Multiple, a power strip that allows multiple iPads to be charged simultaneously. The power strip uniquely offers 2.4-Amp charging on each of its eight USB ports, allowing for full-power charging on up to eight iPads at once.

Steam Family Sharing program hits beta
Valve's ultra-convenient Steam Family Sharing program has just entered beta, with the first 1,000 participants receiving emails instructing them on how to get set up on the service. Steam Family Sharing allows up to 10 additional users to access any individual's Steam game library, though each game collection can only be accessed by a single user at a time.

Evernote Teams Up With Adonit for Fine-Point Bluetooth Stylus [iOS Blog]
Evernote and Adonit today announced a partnership that will see the latter producing the new Jot Script Evernote Edition Stylus, which has a tip that measures just 1.9mm. The large, inaccurate tip of current capacitive styluses is a common complaint that the Jot Script aims to overcome. Square prompts iOS 7 users to allow microphone access for its reader
Square has sent an email out to its users noting that they may have to make some slight settings changes if they want to continue using the Square credit card reader on their iPhone. The changes come from a new security setting in iOS 7 in which the user needs to grant each app access to the microphone or else the app will not be able to use it -- or anything that's plugged into it, like the Square reader.
The email lays out the steps users must take to approve Square Register for microphone access:

Apple Updates System Status Page to Include iOS Device Activation [Mac Blog]
Apple today updated its System Status page (via 9to5Mac) to include iOS Device Activations, allowing users to check whether or not the iOS Device Activation servers are online and functional. These servers are responsible for the setup and activation of new iOS devices, such as the iPhone 5s, and have experienced some outages in recent weeks. The System Status site tracks the majority of Apple's services, stores, and iCloud features, giving users a way to track which products might be experiencing difficulties at any given time. Skitch unveils new logo alongside revamped app for iOS 7

Apple's iPhone revenues exceed those of Microsoft, Boeing, and other huge corporations
Just for the hell of it, let's say that Apple's iPhone unit was a separate company. Businessweek has done a bit of speculation and determined that the iPhone unit would be the ninth largest company in the Dow Jones Industrial Average based on revenues. Those revenues, which currently reach over US$88 billion annually, are alone enough to beat out those of entire mega-corporations.

Sicherheits-Update: iOS 7.0.2 ist da

Apple hat soeben iOS 7.0.2 freigegeben. Das Update nimmt vor allem die Sicherheits-Lücke in den Blick, die es bislang möglich machte, trotz PIN-Sperre die Geräte umfangreich zu benutzen. Wir gehen davon aus, dass auch dieser Bug damit gefixt ist. Freuen können sich der weil auch griechische Nutzer, die nun Passcode-Sperren in ihrer Landessprache nutzen können.
Das Update ist rund 17 MB groß (von iOS 7.0.1), auf unserem iPad mini mit Versiion 7.0 wollen 20,5 MB geladen werden.

Apple veröffentlicht iOS 7.0.2
Apple hat soeben ein erstes iOS-7-Update für alle iOS-Geräte veröffentlicht. iOS 7.0.2 kann ab sofort über iTunes oder als «Over the Air»-Update direkt auf dem iOS-Gerät geladen und installiert werden.
Das Update ist ca. 20 MB gross und behebt einen Fehler, durch den es möglich war den Sperrbildschirm ohne Code zu umgehen. Ausserdem fügt das Update die griechische Tastatur erneut als Option zur Codeeingabe hinzu.
Bereits vor einer Woche wurde iOS 7.0.1 veröffentlicht. Dieses erste iOS-7-Update ist jedoch nur für das iPhone 5s verfügbar und behob ein Problem mit dem Fingerabdruck-Sensor «Touch ID» des neuen High-End iPhones.

Mac mini prices climb in several countries
The iMac refresh earlier this week wasn't apparently the only change to the Apple lineup. 9to5Mac is reporting that all Mac mini configurations are now more expensive in a number of countries, including Australia, Brazil, Portugal and Malaysia.
As an example of the price bumps, the prices of the Intel Core i5 2.5 GHz, Intel Core i7 2.3 GHz, and Mac mini with OS X Server models are currently A$749, A$999, and A$1249. Previously, the same three models sold for A$699, A$899, and A$1099.

Google gives search a new engine and card UI, outs new iOS search app
Google's feeling a bit nostalgic these days, as today is the company's 15th anniversary. However, its look at the past is a fleeting thing, and Big G is very much focused on the future, so it revealed a host of new features for search. First up, users will be seeing a new card-based UI that's been making its way across all of Google's services. Aside from providing a consistent brand-wide appearance, the new UI also delivers an easier way for folks to drill down on answers to their queries. For example, when searching for a particular band, a card will pop up at the top with a list of songs that can be scrolled side to side.

Apple has released iOS 7.0.2 for all iOS devices — unlike the previous iOS 7.0.1 update, which was only for the iPhone 5c and 5s. The release fixes bugs that could allow someone to bypass the Lock Screen passcode.
Also included in the update is a Greek keyboard option for passcode entry. It’s available for download now through the Software Update screen under Settings.

Is the Decline button missing from incoming calls in iOS 7? It's not just you
I've not found a ton of bugs in iOS 7, some weird behaviors (mostly in older apps) and visual artifacts, sure. Bugs? Thus far the biggest one I've found is the Decline button for incoming calls disappears, seemingly at random. I've had two calls from the same number over the course of a couple of days and sometimes the Decline button is there, and sometimes it isn't.

Apple confirmed and assured everyone that it was working on a fix to the iO7 lockscreen bypass bug last week that let sneaky individuals mess with users' email and social network accounts. And now, exactly seven days later, said update is hitting handsets in the form of iOS 7.0.2. Apple must pay $3 million in damages for iPod dispute in Japan
The fact that Apple is on the receiving end of more lawsuits than any other company in tech is hardly surprising. In contrast, the fact that patent disputes pertaining to the iPod are still being litigated is somewhat surprising.
Kyodo News is reporting that Apple recently found itself on the losing end of a $3 million judgement for patent infringement. Specifically, the Tokyo District Court found that the click wheel on Apple's now iconic iPod infringes upon patents owned by a man named Norihiko Saito.

Enterprises are increasingly interested in developing apps for Android-based smartphones and tablets, showing how Google's OS is becoming more accepted, according to a poll. You may recall that when we started this iPhoto series I mentioned that Apple has done its best to automatically filter and file photos for you. Two additional ways that it's done so is through the use of face recognition and location, better known as the Faces and Places features.iPhoto '09 introduced both of these features, and they've been updated over the years. The Faces feature attempts to identify the human face within your images and queries you for the identities of the people they contain. Once you tell iPhoto that the guy with his tongue touching his nose is indeed Cousin Jo-Jo, it will then search your photo library for other images that might contain the black sheep of the family. VLC for Mac gets 4K support, dozens of new features
The VideoLan Organization has released a major update to the VLC media player for OS X. VLC 2.1 adds a number of significant updates to the popular open source media player. For starters, VLC now supports "Ultra-HD video," otherwise known as 4K. That means VLC is now capable of outputting video that is over twice the resolution of BluRay. This, of course, requires you to have video files of 4K quality.

Apple has been hit with a judgment for ¥330 million ($3.3 million) in a Japanese court case over infringement of a patent by the company's click wheel system used on a number of past iPod models and the current iPod classic, reports Dow Jones Business News.The Tokyo District Court on Thursday ordered Apple Inc. ( AAPL ) to pay Y330 million in damages to Japanese inventor Norihiko Saito in a patent infringement case involving the U.S. firm's iPod music player, Kyodo News reported. Desktops see growth as mobile markets dip
The notebook, tablet, and mobile phone markets have seen decline for two consecutive quarters for the first time in Australia and New Zealand (A/NZ), and while this is not indicative of a saturation point, it could be an indicator of device fatigue and commoditisation, according to analyst firm, IDC.IDC's figures indicate a total of 4.77 million units of client devices, including desktops and mobile devices, were shipped in the second quarter of 2013. Tablets took the biggest hit with a 20 per cent QoQ dip (although maintaining 25 per cent YoY growth). Apple has won its appeal against IGB Electronica in Brazil regarding "iPhone" name in that country, according to BNAmericas. The company had been locked in a lawsuit with Brazilian company IGB Electronica, which was granted the Brazilian iPhone trademark in 2007. IGB originally applied for the iPhone trademark in 2000 and since 2007, it has been selling an Android smartphone by the name of "Iphone" under its G-Gradiente brand.

Frankreich ermittelt erneut gegen Apple
Die französische Behörde «Direction Générale de la Concurrence, de la Consommation et de la Répression des Fraudes», welche unter anderem den Wettbewerb überwacht, nimmt in einer Untersuchung die Verträge zwischen Apple und den französischen Mobilfunkanbietern unter die Lupe. Von besonderem Interesse sind die Vertragskonditionen, welche Apple mit den beteiligten Unternehmen ausgehandelt hat. Diese Konditionen enthalten unter anderem Bestimmungen, nach welchen eine bestimmte Mindestabnahmen-Menge vereinbart wird. Ausserdem sollen iPhones von den Händlern anderen Produkten vorgezogen werden. Mit diesen Vereinbarungen könnte Apple als starker Marktteilnehmer den Wettbewerb behindern.

iOS 7 generiert bereits mehr als die Hälfte des iOS-Internet-Traffic
Nur eine Woche nach der Veröffentlichung von iOS 7 dominiert das neue mobile Betriebssystem von Apple bereits den nordamerikanischen Internet-Traffic. Gemäss einer Studie von Chitika kommt 51.8 Prozent des gesamten Internet-Verkehrs, welcher in den USA und Kanada von iOS-Geräten generiert wird, von Geräten mit iOS 7 als Betriebssystem. Das neue mobile Betriebssystem von Apple ist somit innerhalb der ersten sieben Tage stärker verbreitet worden als die Vorgängerversion iOS 6. Vor einem Jahr lag der Anteil des Internet-Traffics, welcher von iOS-6-Geräten generiert wurde, eine Woche nach dessen Lancierung bei 47 Prozent.
Bereits innerhalb der ersten 48 Stunden zeigte sich gemäss den Analysten die im Vergleich zu iOS 6 schnellere Verbreitung des neuen Betriebsystems. Während dieses Zeitraums machten die iOS-7-Geräte bereits 31.7 Prozent des Internet-Traffics aus, während im Vorjahr lediglich 24.7 Prozent des Internet-Traffics von iOS-6-Gerät

Floppy ROM: Scheiß auf Downloads, Software auf Flexidisc

Engadget mag Vinyl und liebt Flexidiscs. Die Schallfolie ist so gut wie ausgestorben, wird aber von einigen wenigen Presswerken mittlerweile wieder angeboten. In den 1970ern war das anders. Entsprechend nutze das Computer-Magazin Interface Age die labbrige Platte zum praktischen Verteilen von Software. So sparte man sich das lästige Abtippen des Codes. In den Pop-Magazinen gab es Musik, bei Interface Age Programme.
So ganz problemlos war die Sache wohl nicht, vom Anschluss eines Plattenspielers an den Rechner mal ganz abgesehen. Empfohlen wurde die Überspielung auf Cassette und dann das Importieren. Die Flexidisc war wirklich alles andere als High Fidelity, dafür stimmte hier der Name: Floppy ROM.

Security flaw allows unwanted code execution in Mailbox app
An Italian computer engineer has reportedly discovered that the popular Mailbox iOS app, which was acquired by Dropbox earlier this year, suffers from a potentially serious vulnerability that may allow malicious e-mails to wreak all sorts of havoc on your device. Dubbed Target Ticket, the on-demand video service may remind you of either Apple's iTunes streaming service or Amazon's non-Instant video. Apple issues EFI 2.1 update for new iMac
Even though the new iMac was just released on Tuesday, there's already an system update available specifically for the new machine.The iMac (late 2013) EFI Update 2.1 is for iMac users who also use Boot Camp to run Windows 7 or 8. Microsoft has released Skype for Mac 6.9, which adds a new screen sharing option and bug fixes. The biggest new feature of Skype 6.9 is that now users can easily share just a single window on their screen instead of sharing their entire screen with another Skype user. If you've purchased AppleCare+ for your iPad, iPod, or iPhone, you can now get repairs and replacements while you're traveling abroad -- as long as Apple sells AppleCare+ in the country you are in. AppleCare+ for iOS devices extends the limited warranty on those devices to two years from the original purchase date. That Apple considers China an important part of its overall plan to significantly increase its revenue base is hardly a secret. San Francisco Apple Store sells for record-breaking $50 million
The San Francisco Apple Store is setting record sales numbers. Not for the new iPhone, but for the land itself. The Union Square property is reportedly selling for almost US$50 million thanks to a bid from mega-realty corporation Ashkenazy.
Normally commercial real estate prices near the exclusive Union Square location average an already mind-boggling price of $2,000 per square foot. The deal for the Apple property makes that look downright reasonable, averaging out to $3,000 per square foot.

Apple increases Mac mini pricing in Australia & Brazil

Apple Highlights New Apple TV 6.0 'Automatic Setup' Feature in Support Document [Mac Blog]
Apple today released a support document detailing a newly implemented Apple TV setup feature that was introduced last week with its Apple TV 6.0 software update. Users that have a third-generation Apple TV running the 6.0 software can use an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch running iOS 7 to automatically transfer network settings, Apple ID information, and language preferences to the Apple TV, allowing for faster setup. French authorities investigating Apple's carrier contracts
The French finance ministry is looking into Apple's business practices in the country again, this time focusing on contracts between the company and French mobile carriers. The investigation is part of a larger probe into relationships between major handset makers and their major clients -- the operators who sell the phones.
The probe was initially reported by French news channel BFM TV, and spokesmen for Apple and the finance ministry's anti-fraud and antitrust unit made no comment.
