Google Voice update adds short code support, warns you when you text 911
An update to Google Voice today brings a useful, if not earth-shattering, new feature: support for SMS short codes. If your primary phone number is the one associated with your Google Voice account, this means you'll finally be able to use these codes for online banking and other services without your message showing up as sent from your carrier number. Apple HQ could have Google deliver them some iPads, and I hope they do
Today, Google announced that its Google Shopping Express service -- which will run to select area stores, take care of your shopping list, and then deliver the items to your doorstep -- is now available to virtually all of San Francisco as well as a huge chunk of the peninsula all the way down to, and including, San Jose. 3rd generation Apple TV setup now as easy as touching an iOS 7 device to it
TUAW reader Aaron G pointed out an interesting Apple knowledge base article to us this morning. According to the post, a 3rd generation Apple TV running Apple TV software 6.0 or later can be easily set up by using an iOS device running iOS 7. It's as easy as touching the device to the Apple TV.
Once the Apple TV is connected to your TV and showing the setup screen, you just unlock the iOS 7 device, making sure that Bluetooth is enabled and you're connected to the Wi-Fi network that you want the Apple TV to be connected to. You then touch the iOS device to the Apple TV, after which prompts appear on both the iOS device and Apple TV.

Apple announced back in April that it would be hitting the road this fall with Tech Talks, a likely response to the overwhelming interest in WWDC 2013 which sold out in mere minutes.

Das nach einem Hacker-Angriff kurzzeitig ausgeknockte appgefahren Forum ist seit heute wieder online. Zunächst einmal wollen wir uns für die kleine Auszeit entschuldigen. Ende der vergangenen Woche wurde eine Sicherheitslücke bei unserer Foren-Software vBulletin entdeckt, die wir nicht schnell genug stopfen konnten. iOS 7 Tech Talks: Apple kommt nach Deutschland
Da die Tickets für die WWDC 2013 mal wieder innerhalb von Sekunden ausverkauft war, veranstaltet Apple noch in diesem Jahr, unter anderem in Europa, sogenannten “Tech Talks”. An zwei Tagen können Developer sich Rat und Tricks über App- und Game-Entwicklung für iOS holen.

iFixit disassembles new iMacs, finds spare SSD slot and more
iFixit did their patented (well, the process should be patented) teardowns of a pair of brand new iMacs and as usual, the team of technicians have found some unexpected surprises.
In a quest to find out just how repairable the new iMacs are, iFixit opened up both the 21.5- and 27-inch models to see what makes them tick. Both new iMacs sport a way to add a second hard drive through the Fusion Drive SSD port. The port features a PCIe connection, so it will just be up to third-party vendors to come up with adapters to allow a simple drive installation.
The 21.5" model no longer has a replaceable CPU, with the previously socketed processor now soldered directly to the logic board. Fortunately for power users, they can still replace the CPU in the 27" model.

News: Apple announces iOS 7 Tech Talks
Apple has announced iOS 7 Tech Talks for developers. The talks will take place in San Francisco, Shanghai, New York, Berlin, Tokyo, and London. Each city will get two days of talks — one day for app developers, and the following day for game developers. The talks start in San Francisco on Oct. 8 and end in London on Dec. 18. Developers can apply now; the deadline for submissions is 10 a.m. Pacific, Friday, Sept. 27.

Amazon brings MP3 purchasing to its Cloud Player for PC app
The Mac version is still only promised to be coming soon, but Amazon has today delivered a fairly big update to its Cloud Player for PC application. Google Hangouts for Android update finally lets you know who is signed in
One of the major gripes users have had since the Google Hangouts platform and apps rolled out is that they could no longer actually see if their contacts are active before sending them a message. A new update for the Android app is ready to fix that, and is rolling out over the next few days. Apple Under Investigation by French Authorities Over Carrier Contracts [iOS Blog]

Judge in Brazilian 'iPhone' Trademark Lawsuit Rules in Apple's Favor
Apple has won the right to legally use the "iPhone" name in Brazil after a judge ruled in favor of the Cupertino company in an ongoing lawsuit with IGB Electronica, reports BNAmericas (via CNET). Instagram gets the iOS 7 treatment
Next in the long line of popular iOS apps revamping their looks for Apple's newest mobile OS is Instagram, which just rolled out a new version of its photo sharing app.

New Apple stores opening in British Columbia and Virginia this weekend
Apple has officially announced the grand opening of two new Apple stores this weekend. The first store in located in the Potomac Town Center shopping plaza in Woodbridge, Virginia. It opens at 10AM this Saturday, September 28th. The second grand opening takes place in Canada at the Guildford Town Centre in Surrey, British Columbia. It also opens its doors for the first time at 10AM local time this Saturday, September 28th.

3D-Drucker reproduziert Gemälde detailgenau bis zum Pinselstrich (Video)

Der Niederländer Tim Zaman hat ein Verfahren ausgetüftelt, mit dem sich Gemälde superexakt reproduzieren lassen, Farbauftrag und Pinselführung inklusive. Für seine Klone alter Meister wie Van Gogh scannt Zaman die Gemälde aufwendig in 3D, um sie anschließend von einem Océ-Drucker (Canon) reproduzieren zu lassen, wobei ein aufgebohrter Thermosublimationsdruck zum Einsatz kommt, bei dem mit 600 dpi solange Farbschichten auf Farbschicht gedruckt wird, bis ein Relief mit allen Details des Originals entstanden ist.

Fitness tracker Strava has launched an update to its Strava Run iOS app today that takes advantage of the new M7 "motion coprocessor" in the iPhone 5s to deliver a number of new features, reports The Verge. iOS 7 beats up on Android, Windows Phone in user experience comparison
A new report by technology consultants Pfeiffer Consulting has found that iOS significantly outranks Android, Windows Mobile, and BlackBerry phones in user experience satisfaction. Pfeiffer didn't want user "fan" bias entering into the equation, so the company only looked at "aspects that have a direct impact on the day-to-day user experience of an average, non-technical user."
The results show that Apple's iOS 6 and iOS 7 best the other operating systems in all four main categories: cognitive load, efficiency, customization, and user experience friction. The results, according to Pfeiffer:

Die YouTube Audio Library umfasst bisher 150 instrumentale Songs, die sich (übrigens nicht beschränkt auf YouTube) frei benutzen lassen. Amazon hat in der Nacht auf heute zwei neue Tablets mit dem Namen «Kindle Fire HDX» vorgestellt. Im Fokus der Entwicklung stand dabei der Bildschirm, welcher gegenüber den vorhergehenden Versionen deutlich verbessert wurde.
Das Kindle Fire HDX wird in zwei verschiedenen Bildschirmgrössen angeboten. Während das Display des 7-Zoll-Modells mit einer Auflösung von 1’920 mal 1’200 Pixel daherkommt, verfügt das HDX mit dem 8.9-Zoll-Bildschirm über eine Auflösung von 2’560 mal 1’600 Pixel. Die Pixeldichte beträgt beim 8.9-Zoll-Modell 339 Pixel pro Zoll, während sie 323 Pixel pro Zoll beim 7-Zoll-Modell beträgt. Im Vergleich dazu verfügt das Retina-Display des iPad 4 über eine Pixeldichte von 264 Pixel pro Zoll

News: Report: Apple working with Quanta on 12-inch iPad
Apple is rumored to be working with Taiwanese computer manufacturer Quanta on a 12-inch iPad, according to a report from Taiwan. A July report noted Apple was working on tablet devices “measuring slightly less than 13 inches,” and a more recent report claimed Apple was working on a 17-watt power supply for an unknown product — possibly a larger iPad, considering the wattage. If all your awesome dancer troupe videos keep getting bumped off of YouTube for copyright violation -- there's finally an answer. YouTube has just announced the launch of a new audio library, with 150 royalty-free music tracks for use on your videos. You can browse the library direct from your video manager page, and sounds can be sorted by genre, mood, instrument and so on. YouTube's even making a call out to musicians that would be interested in having their work featured. That dancing though? Let's just keep that private.

iPad-Gehäuse in der Farbe «spacegrau» aufgetaucht
Der australische Blogger Sonny Dickson will in den Besitz eines Gehäuses gekommen sein, welches bei der nächsten iPad-Generation zum Einsatz kommen könnte. Das von Dickson vorgestellte Gehäuse kommt in der Farbe «Spacegrau» daher. Der neue Farbton wurde mit dem iPhone 5s zum ersten Mal eingeführt. Seit dem 10. September werden auch der iPod touch, der iPod nano sowie der iPod shuffle in der Farbvariante «Spacegrau» angeboten. Neben einer spacegrauen Farbvariante soll der Nutzer weiterhin die Möglichkeit haben, ein silbernes iPad zu erwerben. Auch die schwarze Farbvariante könnte bis auf weiteres erhältlich bleiben.

Der Chaos Computer Club machte am Montag durch ein Video auf sich aufmerksam in dem Apples neuer Fingerabdrucksensor "Touch ID" ausgetrickst wurde. Der AlaskaDispatch berichtet jetzt aber von einer neuen, potenziell gefährlichen Panne: demnach hat die App mehrere Autofahrer direkt auf die Taxibahn (auf der die Flugzeuge zur Start- und Landbahn manövrieren) geschickt, wenn sie zum Flughafen Fairbanks International in Alaska wollten. Das HTC One Max ist schon des öfteren aufgetaucht, jetzt sind ein paar Screenshots des Kamera-Interfaces aufgetaucht. Die bestätigen ein paar der Kamera-Features, die schon durch die Gerüchteküche geisterten: HDR-Video, Panorama-Modus für Sportaufnahmen und Pixelkorrektur in drei Stufen. Die ab sofort erhältlichen neuen Modelle kommen alle mit Haswell-Prozessoren, das Einstiegsmodell mit 21,5-Zoll mit Intels neuer Iris-Grafik. Neue iMacs von Apple veröffentlicht
Apple hat, ohne viel Getöse, im Rahmen einer Pressemeldung über die Erneuerung seines iMac-Portfolios unterrichtet. Neue Prozessoren, bessere Grafikkarten und sogar ein günstigerer Preis kommen im Ergebnis dabei herum. Beim letzten Special Event hatte man vermutet, Apple würde ein Hardware-Upgrade für seine Macs bekanntgeben. Das war nicht der Fall. Also rechnete man mit einem Update zum nächsten Event im Oktober. Microsoft hat am Montag die zweite Generation der Surface-Tablets vorgestellt. Microsoft wollte damit wohl vor der mutmasslichen Präsentation des iPad 5 und des iPad mini 2 zwei eigene neue Tablets auf dem Markt etablieren.

Apple issues firmware update to its just-released late-2013 iMacs
Apple on Tuesday unveiled an update to its iMac line-up, adding Intel's Haswell processors to the all-in-one range. On the very same day, Apple released a firmware update for the new models. Apples Chefjurist verkauft Apple-Aktien für 12 Millionen US-Dollar
Apples SVP Bruce Sewell hat am Montag rund 25’000 Optionen ausgeübt und anschliessend die daraus erhaltenen Aktien verkauft. Mit dem Verkauf der Aktien erzielte Apples Chefjurist einen Erlös von rund 12 Millionen US-Dollar.
Die nun verkauften Optionen entsprechen den letzten 25 Prozent eines Optionspaketes, welches dem hochrangigen Apple-Manager im Jahr 2009 gewährt worden ist. Sewell durfte davon ab dem Jahr 2010 jedes Jahr 25 Prozent der Optionen umwandeln und die Aktien anschliessend veräussern. Der Chefjurist kam im Jahr 2009 von Intel zu Apple. Beim Halbleiterhersteller hatte er zuvor eine ähnliche Position inne.

Den Berechnungen des Unternehmens zufolge kosten die Komponenten des iPhone 5s mit 16 GB Speicher rund 191 US-Dollar. Die Kosten für die Komponenten erhöhen sich auf 210 US-Dollar, wenn das iPhone 5s mit 64 GB Speicher gebaut wird. Zusätzliche 8 US-Dollar werden für den Zusammenbau des Gerätes aufgewendet, womit für das iPhone 5s mit 64 GB Speicher ein Endpreis von mindestens 218 US-Dollar resultiert.
Das iPhone 5c ist in der Herstellung etwas günstiger als das iPhone 5s. Die Analysten von IHS schätzen den Preis für das iPhone 5c mit 16 GB Speicher auf 173 US-Dollar inklusive der Herstellungskosten. Apple's Maps App Directs Alaska Drivers onto Airport Taxiway
Drivers who use Apple's Maps app for directions to the Fairbanks International Airport in Alaska are being instructed to drive onto an airport taxiway, reports AlaskaDispatch. The taxiway is located directly across from the runway, which is used by aircraft on a regular basis. Though the instructions do not direct drivers to the runway, people have driven there by mistake. Amazon brings Verizon LTE to Kindle Fire HDX
Okay, okay, one more bit of info to share from Amazon tonight. Those snazzy new Fire HDX tablets are, as expected, getting cellular options. This time out, however, the company is adding an additional carrier. On top of AT&T, Fire buyers will also be able to pick up a Verizon version of the tablet. That upgrade'll cost you an extra $100 on top of the base price, bringing the 7-inch version to $329 and the 8.9-inch one to $479. According to Amazon, "standard plans" will be supported for the two carriers. A breakdown of that pricing can be found after the break.

Apple May Be Working With Quanta Computer on Larger iPad
Apple is continuing development of its rumored larger-sized iPad and working with supplier Quanta Computer, reports Chinese site United Daily News (via Mac Otakara). AppleCare+ to cover international iPhone replacements, starting September 27th

AppleCare+ May Include Coverage for International Travelers [iOS Blog]
The AppleCare+ service, which covers iPhones, iPads and iPods against accidental damage and warranty-related issues, may soon expand coverage to international travelers, reports TechCrunch. Dollar Store Accessories: What ¥100 buys you
America has the dollar store. Japan has the ¥100 store. TUAW has been covering iOS accessorizing on the cheap in a series of recent posts. Today, the focus turns international.
TUAW reader TokyoJoe writes, "This pic is from Daiso, one of the biggest ¥100 shop chains in Tokyo. They have a decent selection of iPhone 5 and 4S cases as well as cables and stands." AT&T customers traveling overseas may not have to look too far for Wi-Fi access in the future. Today, the company signed an agreement with global hotspot provider Fon that gives AT&T customers access to Fon's nearly 12 million hotspots on smartphones and other Wi-Fi-enabled devices. Fon's members will gain access to AT&T's nearly 30,000 hotspots in the US in return.
Fon's a fascinating business -- the company's members share their home Wi-Fi and in turn get free access at all other Fon hotspots. The company provides special routers to members that prioritize the homeowner's internet traffic but allow secured access to other Fon members nearby.

Apple issues day-one EFI update for new iMacs to address Boot Camp issue
No sooner had Apple announced the 2013 iMacs than they also issued a day-one EFI (Extensible Firmware Interface) update for the speedy new all-in-ones.
The update is targeted at an issue that sometimes occurs when installing a Boot Camp partition with Windows 7 or Windows 8. The issue appears when an external optical drive (the devices have no internal optical drive) and a USB thumb drive are connected at the same time, causing the screen to go black.

Chipworks analysis of iPhone 5s A7 and M7 chips highlights Apple's design evolution
iFixit tore down the iPhone 5s last week and gave us a peek at the innards of Apple's new phone. Chipworks has taken that analysis a step further with a detailed look at the chips that power the device.
Starting with the A7, Chipworks has confirmed that the A7 is manufactured by Samsung using the same 28nm High-K Metal Gate (HKMG) process the Korean company uses for its new Exynos 5410 processor.
