iPad sales slip as tablet market surges
The tablet market has exploded in the last year, with nearly 60 percent growth since the same quarter in 2012. This is according to new information published by the market research firm IDC on Monday. At the top of the market is Apple, thanks to strong sales of the iPad. However while Apple is still number one on the charts their victory comes with a coda that makes it a little bittersweet.
Although Apple was the number one vendor with 14.6 million iPads shipped and a 32.4 percent market share they were the only company out of the top first vendors to have their market share drop since 2012. That year Apple enjoyed a staggering 60.3 percent market share. In 2013 that number had shrunk to a 32.4 percent market share, a -14.1 percent growth rate since

Tor browser for Windows exploit discovered, malware may be gathering info for Uncle Sam
It was just over two years ago that the paragon of internet privacy, the Tor project, decided to build its own browser by forking Firefox. Washington Post print and online presence purchased by Jeff Bezos
Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos has agreed to purchase the Washington Post. The Amazon executive will pay $250 million for the paper and all of the associated publications. Amazon itself isn't involved in the purchase, with Bezos becoming the sole owner when the sale is completed, following regulatory approvals.

Square iOS app gets check, gift card tracking, expanded iPad features
Mobile payment service Square has updated the iOS edition of Square Register, its point-of-sale app for retail. The v3.2 release allows businesses to record any sort of payment type, including checks and gift cards. Previously the app was centered around credit card transactions, where Square makes its money.

Jeff Bezos buys The Washington Post for $250 million in cash
Some big (and surprising) news in the media industry today: The Washington Post has just confirmed that it and its affiliated publications have been acquired by Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos for $250 million in cash. The announcement notes that Amazon "will have no role in the purchase," and that Bezos himself "will buy the news organization and become its sole owner when the sale is completed, probably within 60 days." The statement goes on to explain that "The Post Co. will change to a new, still-undecided name and continue as a publicly traded company without The Post thereafter."

Cheeky scam artist puts apples in iPhone boxes, sells them to unsuspecting woman
Buying pricey electronics from a private seller is never advised, but when a woman in Brisbane, Australia met with a seller at a local McDonalds to purchase a pair of "new" iPhones, she figured she was safe. As the Herald Sun reports, after buying what appeared to be two new iPhone boxes from the seller for a total of $1,500 AUD (approx. $1,300 USD), she returned home to find that the boxes contained actual apples in place of Apple smartphones.

South Korean gov't. speaks out on veto of ITC ban of Apple devices
The South Korean government has issued a statement expressing worries about the Obama administration veto of an ITC ban on some Apple products. The Ministry of Trade, Industry & Energy says that the decision could harm Samsung's patent rights, and that it will be paying close attention on Friday, when the ITC is expected to rule on a possible ban of some of Samsung's Galaxy devices. "We hope to see a fair and reasonable decision on the matter," the ministry states.

iPhone moisture sensor settlement could cost up to $300 per phone
This past April, Apple agreed to the terms of a US$53 million class-action settlement stemming from Apple's warranty practices regarding water damage on older generation iPhones and iPod Touches.
The lawsuit alleged that Apple refused to honor the warranty on devices that were ostensibly damaged by water. Both the iPhone and iPod Touch contain Liquid Contact Indicators which change color when they come into contact with water. The crux of the issue, however, is that these Liquid Contact Indicators were also prone to change color in humid environments. Consequently, Apple denied warranty coverage to many consumers who may have otherwise been eligible.

FileMaker lays off 20 employees after discontinuing Bento
Apple-owned FileMaker, Inc has sadly laid off 20 employees following the discontinuation of its Bento software last week, reports AppleInsider. Samsung's market value plummets following US presidential veto
Over the weekend, the Obama administration vetoed the US International Trade Commission's import ban pertaining to older generation iPhones and iPads. The move marked the first time since the 80s that a U.S. President vetoed an ITC ruling.
While Apple is of course thrilled with the Obama administration stepping up to protect FRAND rights, the same can't be said for Samsung, or its investors. In the wake of the ITC veto, Samsung's market value dropped by over US$1 billion.
Also expressing concern regarding the veto was the South Korean government itself, which on Monday issued a statement exclaiming that the veto will have a negative impact on patent property rights.

Apple issues update on developer's site, most services are restored
Apple has sent an email to developers letting them know the ongoing status of restoring the developer's site after a hacking attempt led to the company taking the site down in July. In the email, Apple said that most of the developer services are back online, with the majority of the rest to come this week:

Apple Plans to Restore Majority of Developer Center Functionality This Week
Just over a week after Apple began bringing its Developer Center back online after being down for eight days, the company has emailed developers with an update on its progress. Apple has brought a majority of its developer services back online and plans to reinstate most of the remaining services by the end of this week. Still down are Xcode automatic configuration as well as access to license agreements, Technical Support Incidents, program enrollments, and renewals in Member Center. Foxconn, UniMicron accused of polluting Chinese rivers
Foxconn and UniMicron -- two key suppliers to Apple and other high-tech companies -- are being investigated by Chinese authorities over complaints of local rivers being polluted with heavy metals. The issue was brought to the attention of the Chinese government late last week, after allegations were made public by environmental activist Ma Jun and a group of five non-profit organizations. In particular the allegations deal with the town of Kunshan, roughly 40 miles west of Shanghai, where residents say pollution has been worsening over the past decade.

Apple's Share of Tablet Market Sinks on Lack of Product Launches in Early 2013
Research firm IDC today announced its preliminary estimates of worldwide tablet shipments for the second quarter of 2013, finding that Apple's share of the market has fallen to under a third. According to IDC's numbers, Apple held a 32.4% share of the market for quarter, compared to 39.6% in the previous quarter and a 60.3% share in the year-ago quarter. While other top tablet manufacturers saw their shipments rise by 100-300% over the second quarter of 2012, the lack of a new iPad launch from Apple in the March-April timeframe resulted in a 14% drop in Apple's numbers. Still, other top vendors saw their shipments drop sequentially, with IDC attributing those drops to a lack of a general boost in tablet interest that accompanies iPad launches.

Between the poor working conditions reported there and this leak, I bet Apple is really regretting its production contract with Pegatron right now. YouView adds World TV Boosts for Afrikaans, Arabic and Japanese
YouView's catch-up programming has remained mostly UK-centric so far, but TalkTalk is adding some diversity with a trio of World TV Boosts. The new Arabic TV, JSTV and kykNET TV packs give viewers a combined 16 channels of Afrikaans, Arabic and Japanese content. While the Boosts aren't cheap at a minimum £10 ($15) per month, they could be vital for ex-pats who want to keep up with news and shows from their home countries.

Some iMac production could shift from Quanta to Pegatron
Apple may be planning to shift some of its iMac production from Quanta to Pegatron, a report claims. Quanta currently manufactures several Mac lines, including the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro. Some suppliers have allegedly been sending iMac components to Pegatron however, in spite of the firm normally only handling iPhone and iPad work for Apple. Even then, most iPhones and iPads are assembled by Foxconn.

Over half of surveyed developers will require iOS 7 for their apps
Twitterrific developer Craig Hockenberry has posted the results of an interesting survey he performed over on his blog. Hockenberry was deep into the development cycle of getting his apps ready for iOS 7 when he wondered if many other developers out there are doing what he's doing -- that is, dropping support for any version of iOS below iOS 7. So Hockenberry ran an informal survey and discovered some interesting things. Out of 575 responses:
95% of developers said they are working on updating their apps for iOS 7.
52% of developers said they will drop support for any iOS below iOS 7 in the next major version of their app.

Chinese Officials Investigating Accusations of Toxic Metal Dumping by Two Apple Suppliers [Mac Blog]
As reported by The Wall Street Journal, Chinese government officials are investigating Apple suppliers and electronics manufacturers UniMicron and Foxconn after local environmental groups accused both of dumping large amounts of toxic heavy metals into nearby rivers. iOS notetaking service 'Catch Notes' shutting down August 30th
Users of the popular iOS app Catch Notes, take note (no pun intended): the note-taking and archiving service is shutting down as of August 30. The service allowed people to take notes via text, photos, or voice and share them with friends and colleagues. The company has not been specific about why it's shutting down but is urging users to download their data before it is deleted from Catch's servers on August 30. A 21-year-old woman from Brisbane, Australia was scammed into buying a pair of apples in place of the iPhones she was expecting, regional police say. Neuer Apple-Retail-Chef: nur Externe kommen in Frage
Das Wall Street Journal berichtet in einem Artikel über Apples Suche nach einem neuen Retail-Chef. Apple will für den Posten des Retail-Chefs angeblich einen externen Manager verpflichten, wie Insider berichten. Dies ist vor allem deshalb bemerkenswert, weil innerhalb von Apples Retail Sparte bereits potentielle Kandidaten für den Posten des Retail-Chefs arbeiten. Samsung Loses $1 Billion in Market Value After U.S. Veto on Apple Ban, Files Appeal Against Patent Ruling
After the Obama administration vetoed a partial ban on the import and sale of some Apple products, Samsung announced that it has been granted a hearing in a US appeals court next year against the original ruling, as reported by the Financial Times. Wobei das "Zelt" mangels Stangen "auf den menschlichen Körper" als tragende Struktur setzt, was wohl nur bedingt praktisch ist, aber im Ernstfall immer noch besser, als sich einfach in den Matsch neben die Tanzfläche zu legen. Obama mit Veto gegen iPhone- und iPad-Importverbot
Barack Obamas Handelsbeauftragter Michael Froman hat mit einem Veto ein Importverbot für das iPhone 4 und das iPad 2 verhindert. Die US-Handelskommission ITC hatte nach einem Urteil im Juni ein Importverbot für einige iOS-Geräte verfügt, welches heute Montag in Kraft hätte treten sollen. Mit diesem Veto blockiert der US-Präsident zum ersten Mal seit 26 Jahren eine Entscheidung der Handelskommission. Gemäss der US-Regierung kam das Veto nach intensiven Gesprächen mit verschiedenen Behörden-Gruppen zu Stande.
Samsung konnte im Juni die US-Behörde ITC davon überzeugen, dass Apple ein Samsung-Patent zum CDMA-Mobilfunk-Standard verletzt hat. Betroffen von der Patentverletzung sind alle iPhones bis zum iPhone 4 sowie das iPad und das iPad 2, welche mit dem Netz von AT&T kompatibel sind. Bedeutsam wäre das Importverbot allerdings n

AAPL: Erfolgreicher Juli & wieder «wertvollste Firma»
An der New Yorker Technologiebörse NASDAQ kann Apple auf einen erfolgreichen Monat Juli zurückschauen. Nachdem das Wertpapier des IT-Konzerns aus Cupertino während fast einem ganzen Jahr stetig im Sinken begriffen war, konnte AAPL im vergangenen Monat wieder zulegen. Von Ende Juni bis Ende Juli stieg der Kurs der Apple-Aktie von 409 auf 453 US-Dollar. Alleine in der letzten Juli-Woche legte das Papier um über 4 Prozent zu. Erstmals seit Mitte Mai überstieg die Apple-Aktie damit auch wieder den Wert von 450 US-Dollar.
Gründe für den Anstieg im Monat Juli gibt es mehrere. Jüngst liessen bestimmt die Berichte über Tim Cooks erneute China-Reise den Kurs in die Höhe schnellen. Bereits zum dritten Mal seit er CEO von Apple ist besucht Tim Cook das Reich der Mitte — mit dem weltgrössten Mobilfunkanbieter «China Mobile» gibt es dort noch sehr grosses Markt-Potential für den iPhone-Hersteller.

Evernote dient mir als Archiv für alles, wird per Mail mit weitergeleiteten Rechnungen befüllt, erhält eingescannte Post, macht ein OCR darüber, ermöglicht eine Volltextsuche und enthält Ordner und viele Schlagworte, sowie gespeicherte Suchen und ist (client-seitig) in die Google-Suche des Browser integriert und zeigt damit Evernote-interne-Suchergebnisse parallel zu den Google-Treffern an. Mit den unterschiedlichen Clients auf nahezu allen Plattformen und etlichen Integrationen in Drittanbieterwerkzeuge ist Evernote zudem eng verzahnt und überall greifbar.
Evernote nervt mich seit der aktuellen Version 5. Es ist langsam, häufig unbenutzbar und verliert auf meinem iPhone 4s gerne eben erstellte Notizen durch Abstürze. Ein Notizbuch mit 1.000 Notizen auf einem Rechner löschen kann das Evernote auf dem Rechner daneben problemlos mehr als zehn Stunden beschäftigt halten, Lüfterdröhnen inklusive. Weitere Details zu Mansfields neuer Position bei Apple
Gemäss einer «mit der Sache vertrauten Person» war der Rückzug von Bob Mansfield aus der Firmenleitung von Apple nicht ein Schritt in den Ruhestand, wie von einigen Stellen vermutet wurde, sondern das Ergebnis einer kleineren Umstrukturierung in der Führungsebene.
Während Bob Mansfield nun dem «Special Projects Team» vorsitzt, wurde seine frühere Aufgabe als «Senior Vice President of Technologies» in zwei Bereiche aufgespaltet. Zum einen wird Hardware-Chef Dan Riccio nun zusätzlich für die Antennen der mobilen Geräte zuständig sein. Interessanterweise entschied sich Bob Mansfield vor rund einem Jahr gegen den Gang in den Ruhestand, weil seine ehemaligen Unterstellten unzufrieden mit dem neuen Chef Dan Riccio waren.
