Qualcomm Q2 2013 earnings: revenue up to $6.12 billion, profit reaches $2.07 billion
Qualcomm is having an easy time riding the growing wave of mobile devices. Case in point: its very healthy second quarter earnings. Revenue at the San Diego outfit climbed 24 percent year-over-year to $6.12 billion, while the chip designer's net profit grew a similarly brisk 17 percent, to $2.07 billion. Siva Cycle Atom charges USB devices with a pedal-powered battery pack (video)

Apple R&D expenses up 33 percent in March quarter, SEC filing shows
Apple's research and development expenses grew 33 percent year-over-year in the March quarter, or about $278 million, according to a filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission found by AppleInsider. Overall spending for the first half of Apple's fiscal 2013 was up over $530 million, representing a 33 percent increase over the first half of 2012. Should Apple maintain higher spending, it could surpass $4 billion in R&D expenses by the end of FY2013.

A WWDC keynote would be the longest gap between events ever
Jay Yarow's done the homework and determined that if Apple takes the stage as expected at WWDC, it'll be 230 days from the last big Apple event. That would make this the longest wait for a new Apple event ever, at least since the iPad's launch in 2010. The previous record was 132 days between the launch of the MacBook Air and the iPad 2, so this wait trumps that by at least three months.
Yarow cites that wait over at Business Insider for the recent drop in Apple's stock price, and indeed, you can see on the line above that Apple's stock does seem to line up to the reveal events. But there are a lot of factors going into that stock price. The difference i

Apple Offering 150 Free WWDC Tickets to Student Developers
Apple announced its 2013 Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) this morning, with plans to put tickets up for sale tomorrow at 10am. Tickets for WWDC can be hard to come by and sold out within two hours last year, but current students might be able to attend the conference through a WWDC 2013 Student Scholarship. Apple has set aside 150 scholarships for full or part-time students aged 13 years or older. Students must be current members of the iOS Developer Program, iOS Developer University Program, iOS Developer Enterprise Program, or Mac Developer Program. To win a scholar

Apple reveals scholarship program for 2013 WWDC
Apple has opened up applications for its annual scholarships for student developers to attend the 2013 World Wide Developers Conference scheduled for June 10 through June 14. The annual program is giving 150 students admission to the conference on a merit basis, the same number as last year.

Tim Cook auctions $50,000 coffee meet for charity
Apple CEO Tim Cook is offering a coffee meet with himself as the prize in a Charitybuzz auction for the RFK Center for Justice and Human Rights. The meet has been given an estimated value of $50,000, but includes a few stipulations, such as a one-hour time limit, a security screening, and the requirement that people rendezvous with Cook at Apple's Cupertino headquarters. People must also pay for any travel and accommodation costs involved in making it to Cupertino.

Report: Amazon plans to release own set-top box by fall
Amazon is planning to extend its range of tablets and ebook readers by selling a set-top box, according to a report. The device, said to be coming out sometime in the fall, will provide streaming content, such as movies and TV shows to the user from the company's Instant Video catalog as well as Prime Instant Video.

Discovery Communications, parent company of the cable channels Discovery and TLC, has released updates to the Discovery Channel HD and TLC for iPad and iPhone apps that now offer second-screen features on the iPad side.

AT&T quarterlies reveal 4.8 million iPhone activations
AT&T's March quarter results included 4.8 million iPhone activations, data shows. The device represented 80 percent of the carrier's 6 million overall smartphone sales for the quarter. The figure compares favorably against the 4.7 million iPhones AT&T sold in the iPhone 5's launch period, but represents a significant if expected drop from the record 8 million sold during the December quarter.

Snapzoom Kickstarter wants to marry your iPhone with binoculars or a telescope
Your iPhone's camera is great for those wide angle or panoramic shots, but the lens just isn't that wonderful for telephoto images. Daniel Fujikake and Mac Nguyen of HI Resolution Enterprises discovered quite by accident that by holding an iPhone camera up to a pair of binoculars, they could get some amazing video and still images of surfing action. Out of that realization came an inspiration for a universal smartphone adapter that connects to binoculars, telescopes, or spotting scopes to give your phone "bionic eyes". FreedomPop expands 3G coverage, announces Overdrive Pro for Sprint
Mobile data provider FreedomPop has announced an expansion of its 3G coverage through support for Sprint. The change is effective immediately, and should enable nationwide access, solving some complaints about gaps in the carrier's service. Apple offers 150 student scholarships to WWDC 2013
Like it has done in previous years, Apple is offering scholarships for students to attend WWDC. Students must be at least 13 years old and a member of the iOS developer program. To apply, each student must create an app that'll showcase their coding skills, background and interests. Apple will be giving away up to 150 tickets to eligible students, and applications must be received by May 2, 2013 at 5:00 pm PDT.

Drafts is a simple app with a clean interface that allows users to quickly jot down text, thoughts, ideas, and notes. Amazon is developing a set-top box to stream video over the Internet via its Amazon Prime and Instant Video services, according to Bloomberg Businessweek. More realistic guidance from Apple results in better analyst estimates
Apple 2.0's Philip Elmer-DeWitt put it the best in the subhead for his Apple Earnings Smackdown article this morning when he said "Apple management may have found a way to tame the wild beasts of Wall Street." What he was referring to was the fact that most Wall Street analysts were actually quite close on their estimates of how Apple performed in the second quarter of its fiscal year, thanks to new guidance rules that had been announced by CFO Peter Oppenheimer in January. The Smackdown is a quarterly roll call of analyst estimates and how well various institutional and independent analysts fared in their educated guesses of Apple performance.

T-Mobile confirms intent to carry BlackBerry Q10, business registration begins April 29th
More details on the BlackBerry Q10's release in the US are starting to surface. T-Mobile confirmed in an email that its business customers will have the opportunity to register for the device starting next week on April 29th, with availability and pricing details to follow "at a later date." Tumblr for iOS improves sharing, supports Instapaper, Pocket
Everybody's favorite "blogging lite" tool, Tumblr, has a new version out today. Tumblr 3.3.1 has added a selection of sharing tools as well as some changes to make using the mobile app easier and more fun.
Posts can now be shared a variety of ways -- the share button on my iPhone 5, for example, showed not only Twitter, Facebook and Message as targets, but also let me send Tumblr posts to other apps like Chrome, TweetBot, and NetBot. If you want to read Tumblr posts later, they can be sent to Instapaper and Pocket with a few taps. Emailing a post now encases the content in a nice-looking template (image at right) that can be opened by the recipient either as "just an email" or in the Tumblr app.

Needham, Wells Fargo cut Apple forecasts in wake of Q2 results
Some analysts have begun to scale back their forecasts for Apple in the wake of the company's second-quarter financial results. Wells Fargo's Maynard Um has reduced earnings-per-share predictions from $44.51 to $38.71 for FY2013, and from $49.86 to $43.66 for FY2014. His valuation range has been sharply reduced, from $600-630 to $485-525. The analyst cites results that were below Street consensus, but does argue that the worst is behind the company, and says he expects results to improve.

Apple has formally announced the details of its 2013 Worldwide Developers Conference. The event will run from June 10th through the 14th at Moscone West in San Francisco. Wie sicherlich schon den meisten bekannt sein dürfte, wird die Telekom für Verträge, die ab dem 2. Mai 2013 geschlossen werden, die Leistungsbeschreibung anpassen. Apple is celebrating "A Decade of iTunes" with a cool interactive timeline in the iTunes store. The timeline pulls out milestones for iTunes each year. For example, on September 7th, 2005 it says "iPod nano replaces iPod mini and goes on to become the bestselling music player ever."
Each year also displays the the Top Ten bestselling singles and albums. The entire timeline is actually really cool -- especially if you're an Apple history buff. There's no way to grab a direct link to it, but to see it just open up iTunes, go into the iTunes store and look for the "A Decade of iTunes" white carousel banner at the top.

Apple Store app updated with iPhone upgrade notifications
Apple has pushed out a new update to its Apple Store app for iOS. Version 2.6 will notify you when an item you've ordered has been shipped and delivered. But perhaps the coolest push notification is the one that tells you when your iPhone is eligible for upgrade pricing. The iPhone upgrade eligibility is only available to US users.

Apple announces WWDC video feeds for developers
Although the social component and Apple-staffed labs are two important reasons for developers to attend WWDC, early access to tech briefings has long been a motivating force for buying that expensive ticket.
Today, it looks like Apple introduced a major change into their oversubscribed WWDC demand by offering video session feeds for all registered devs -- what appears to be during the conference. On the "more" page, Apple writes:
"Can't make it to WWDC? We'll be posting videos of all our sessions during the conference, so Registered Apple Developers can take advantage of great WWDC content."

Apple hat Heute in einer Medienmitteilung angekündigt, dass die diesjährige WWDC vom Montag, dem 10. bis am Freitag, dem 14. Juni im Moscone Center in San Francisco stattfinden wird.

Life in the clouds: how to decide what to store and where
We live in a world positively soaked in data nowadays. Fortunately, the capacity to store that data has gotten bigger in volume, smaller in physical size, and cheaper per gigabyte as time progresses. Gone are the days where you'd have to lug a Zip disk around (remember those?) or stick your iPod into disk mode. At worst, you're carrying a USB drive with you -- though really, you should be relying on the cloud for by now. The issue is figuring out just what you're going to be keeping up there.

Innerhalb nur einer Woche luden Mac-Benutzer in den USA über 1 Million Titel herunter — der Store war von Beginn an ein Erfolg. Am 15. Juni 2004 wurde der iTunes Music Store international — er schwappte über den Atlantik und fasste in Grossbritannien, Frankreich und Deutschland Fuss. Am 10. Mai 2005 kam der Store dann auch in der Schweiz, am 26. Oktober 2005 auch in Österreich an.

Sprint sells 5M smartphones, 1.5M iPhones in first quarter

Apple has paid out $9 billion to developers; App Store downloads reach 45 billion
Apple's earnings conference calls are typically brimming with interesting tidbits regarding Apple's operations, and Tuesday's was no different. Apple announced that it has, to date, paid out more than $9 billion to developers.
To put that figure into context, let's take a quick look at just how much Apple's payments to developers have risen since the App Store first opened.
Tim Cook noted in February that Apple had paid out $8 billion to developers. In June 2012, Apple announced that they had paid developers $5 billion. Going back further, Apple's first $1 billion payout to developers was reached in June 2010.

Sprint reports quarterly net loss of $643 million, sees iPhone sales drop by a third
Sprint managed to lose a million customers and over a billion dollars last quarter. This time it's not quite as bad, with a net loss of $643 million on revenue that was broadly equivalent to the same quarter of last year (around $8.8 billion). Sales of iPhones were down by around a third relative to last quarter, at 1.5 million. In einem chinesischen Forum ist ein Bild aufgetaucht, welches die Prozessor-Roadmap von Intel für die nächsten zwei Jahre zeigen soll. Auf dem Bild ist jedoch lediglich die Roadmap der Desktop-Prozessoren aufgestellt.
Dieser Grafik zufolge würde Intel im ersten Halbjahr 2015 die Nachfolgegeneration der Haswell-Prozessoren auf den Markt bringen. Die Nachfolgegeneration soll den Namen «Skylake» tragen und im 14 Nanometer-Prozess hergestellt werden. Bereits Mitte 2014 soll allerdings ein «Haswell-Refresh» geplant sein, womit Intel in den nächsten zwei Jahren jedes Jahr eine überarbeitete Prozessor-Version auf den Markt bringen dürfte.

Apple seeds fourth beta of 10.8.4 to developers
Just six days after the previous release, Apple on Tuesday has released a new version of the forthcoming 10.8.4 update to developers. The new build, 12E36, lists no known changes or issues, and asks developers again to focus on Wi-Fi, Safari and graphics drivers. It is known that the new build includes support for the emerging 802.11ac standard, suggesting possible new model updates that will also support the protocols. The 10.8.4 release is also said to improve battery life somewhat, and issues with Wi-Fi and waking from sleep.

Vierte OS X 10.8.4 Vorabversion an Entwickler verteilt
Sechs Tage nach der Veröffentlichung der dritten Beta von OS X 10.8.4 veröffentlichte Apple am gestrigen Abend eine weitere Vorabversion des nächsten OS X Minor-Updates. Registrierte Entwickler können die Beta mit der Build-Nummer «12E36» über das Mac-Developer-Portal herunterladen.
Erneut sollen die Entwickler beim Testen des neuen Systems primär auf Safari, Wi-Fi und die Grafik-Treiber achten.
In einer vorhergehenden Beta-Version wurden Hinweise auf die nächste WLAN-Generation 802.11ac gefunden. Dieser Umstand deutet darauf hin, dass Apple bereits bei der nächsten Überarbeitung der Mac-Modelle die neue Funktechnologie einsetzen könnte. Firaxis' Haunted Hollow appears on, disappears from the App Store
There's good news, bad news, and the best news on this one, and I'll give you the good news first. Firaxis' Haunted Hallow appeared on the App Store this morning, which means the game is just about ready for prime time. The free-to-play strategy title was one of my favorite games I got to see at GDC a few months ago. Glassdoor: Apple employees love Tim Cook
Glassdoor is a site that allows employees of various corporations to rate how they think they're management is doing anonymously, and the company has shared some info with TUAW that it says comes out of Apple's campus in Cupertino. The site works kind of like Yelp for employees, as users can come along and leave ratings and reviews for their own company. But presumably this information came from anyone who works for Apple, not just the employees that work directly with CEO Tim Cook in California.

Apple Store app updated; adds iPhone upgrade notifications
Apple on Tuesday updated its Apple Store app for iOS, adding an ability to send notifications to users when they are eligible for upgrade pricing on a new iPhone through their carrier. The new version (2.6, free) also adds notification support for changes in orders, such as shipping or delivery notices. Previously, the program was able to track a user's order but only when the app was actually in use. Users can now opt for push notifications, as well as schedule Genius, One to One or Specialist appointments, order products for pickup or use EasyPay to buy accessories.

FedEx Mobile app adds Delivery Manager feature
Those of us who are on a first-name basis with our FedEx delivery person have a new reason to be happy with the company's iOS app today. FedEx has added a new Delivery Manager feature allowing customized delivery options -- even letting you sign for packages from within the app.
If you have an existing FedEx account or sign up for a new one from within the app, you're eligible to sign up for FedEx Delivery Manager. This provides a way to schedule deliveries, give your FedEx driver instructions for pending deliveries or sign for packages while you're away.

Apple Reaches 45B App Downloads with $9B Paid to Developers [iOS Blog]
During today's Q2 earnings call, Apple announced that it had hit a milestone of 45 billion total app downloads, up five million from the 40 billion downloads that it reported in January. Tim Cook on Mobile Payments: 'It's In Its Infancy'
Tim Cook was asked during today's earnings call about his feelings regarding the mobile payments market. While he didn't address the topic directly, he did note that the mobile payments were "just getting started" and still "in its infancy." Tim Cook downplays possibility of larger iPhone, cites quality, app trade-offs
With the sudden glut of 5-inch (and larger) smartphones hitting the market, one may wonder if Apple plans to introduce one of its own. In response to a question on today's earnings call, CEO Tim Cook maintained his stance against such a move because of his unwillingness to make tradeoffs in areas like resolution, quality and app compatibility caused by such a devices. He stated specifically that Apple would not ship such a phone "while such trade-offs exist", leaving just enough wiggle room for a future announcement where it can claim all those issues have been solved.

Apple Q2 results show $43.6 billion in revenue, 37.4 million iPhones
Apple has posted the results of its fiscal second quarter, which ended in March. The company reaped $43.6 billion in revenue, up 11 percent year-over-year. Net income was $9.5 billion, or $10.09 per share. That's down, however, from Q2 2012, when Apple posted net income of $11.6 billion with $12.30 in EPS. During the latest quarter, Apple recorded sales of 37.4 million iPhones, 19.5 million iPads, and approximately 4 million Macs. Gross margin was 37.5 percent, at the low end of earlier guidance.

Google buying natural-language news summary service Wavii
On the heels of a similar deal with Yahoo buying Summly last month for around the same price, Google has apparently bought out Seattle-based newsfeed company Wavii for over $30 million, the Seattle Times reports. The company uses natural-language processing to generate newsfeed summaries of stories reported elsewhere, similar to Summly. Apple was said to have also been interested in acquiring the service, and allegedly engaged in a brief bidding war with Google for it, apparently wanting to integrate the service into Siri.

Apple Q2 breakdown shows iPad jump, Mac decline
Following an official announcement of its Q2 results, Apple has also posted a detailed breakdown (PDF) of its performance. Notably, the 19.477 million iPads the company sold was a jump of 65 percent year-over-year. This may however have come at the expense of Mac, which saw units fall 2 percent to 3.952 million. Mac revenue did however rise 7 percent to $5.447 billion, while iPad revenue grew 40 percent to $8.746 billion.
