iCloud Boasts 300M Users and 20 Percent Growth in Q2 2013 [Mac Blog]
During today's Q2 2013 quarterly results call Apple revealed that iCloud now has more than 300 million users, a 20% increase from the 250 million that it reported during its Q1 earnings call in January. Apple Optimistic About Future, Lots of 'Surprises' in the Works for Fall [iOS Blog]
During today's second quarter financial results call, Apple reiterated its commitment to creating innovative products. According to CEO Tim Cook, Apple has a lot of surprises in store for late 2013 and 2014, stating that "amazing new hardware, software, and services" will be coming this fall and "throughout 2014." Apple is expected to release an updated fifth generation iPad with an iPad-mini like design along with the iPhone 5S later this year. An upgraded mini with a Retina display is also rumored to be in the works, along with iOS 7 and Apple's rumored streaming music service. Apple Continues to see Significant Growth in Greater China [Mac Blog]
Today's second quarter earnings release revealed that Apple continues to see high revenue growth in China, with an increase to $8.2 billion or 8 percent year-over year. Greater China represented 18.8% of Apple's total overall revenue, down slightly from 19.5% in the same quarter last year. According to Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer, iPad sales more than doubled year-over-year in Greater China. News: Apple increases stock buyback, dividend
Alongside its quarterly earnings results, Apple today increased both its stock repurchase authorization and quarterly dividend, by a total of $55 billion from the original amount announced last year. Apple increases dividend by 15%, poised to embark on large stock-repurchasing plan
In conjunction with its earnings report for Q2 2013, Apple issued a press release announcing some major plans for its ever-growing stockpile of cash.
In March 2012, Apple announced that the company would be instituting a $2.65/share dividend on a quarterly basis with Apple's first dividend payment to investors going out in August of last year.
Now, about one year later, Apple announced its plan to increase its quarterly dividend to $3.05 per share. The next dividend payout to investors is scheduled for May 16, 2013.

Apple-Quartalsbericht Q2/2013: Zahlen über Erwartungen, Aufstockung Geldfluss an Aktionäre
Heute Abend nach Börsenschluss in New York veröffentlichte Apple den Geschäftsbericht für das zweite Fiskalquartal 2013. In der Zeitspanne zwischen Januar und März 2013 verbuchte Apple Einnahmen in der Höhe von 43.6 Milliarden Dollar (plus 11.22 Prozent im Vergleich zum Vorjahr). Der Gewinn sank auf 9.6 Milliarden (10.09 US-Dollar pro Aktie, -16.38 Prozent). Apple verkaufte 3.952 Millionen Mac-Computer (minus 1.20 Prozent), 19.5 Millionen iPads (plus 65.25 Prozent), 37.4 Millionen iPhones (plus 6.86 Prozent) und 5.6 Millionen iPods (minus 26.88 Prozent). Die Bruttogewinnspanne sank von 47.4 wie angekündigt auf 37.5 Prozent, die internationalen Verkäufe steuerten 66 Prozent der Einnahmen bei.

Apple Seeds Build 12E36 of OS X Beta 10.8.4 Developers [Mac Blog]

Apple reports Q2 2013 earnings
It's the earnings report everybody has been waiting for. Apple just announced earnings for the second quarter of its 2013 fiscal year, and the news is actually quite good.
Apple's own guidance for Q2 2013 expected revenues in the range of $41-43 billion, with gross margins in the range of 37.5 to 38.5 percent. Wall Street analysts were in the same general range, with institutional investors looking at an average earnings number of $41.82 billion and independent analysts a bit more bullish at $43.75 billion. Results for the same quarter last year were $39.19 billion in revenue, earnings per share of $12.30, and a gross margin of 47.4 percent.

Apple patent outs system for turning video game choices into comic books, is all about Mass Effect
Commander Shepard is not someone we expected to pop up in an Apple patent from 2009 (granted today), but here we are, staring into his icy visage. He and the rest of the Normandy's crew are used as just one example of a system that Apple patented, which turns game story choices into a unique comic book (nevermind the fact that Mass Effect comics exist on their own). Of course, like with so many of these patents, it's possible this system'll never see the light of day, but we'd like to detail it all the same for the sheer strangeness of its ambition.

AT&T Q1 2013 earnings: $3.7 billion income on revenue of $31.4 billion
AT&T just posted its earnings for the first quarter of 2013, and the market couldn't help but ding the company, which is now trading down in after hours markets. The business as a whole posted a net income of $3.7 billion, which is slightly up from $3.6 billion one year ago. NPD: iTunes crushing competition in both Video on Demand and sales
According to information purveyor NPD Group, the Apple iTunes store holds a commanding lead in video digital downloads, both for movies and television shows. In 2012, the research firm claims that 67 percent of television show purchases and 65 percent of movie sales were made on Apple's marketplace, up slightly from 2011.

Apple is poised to announce its quarterly earnings today and everyone is wondering how many iPhones and iPads the company sold. Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) took a close look at the iPhone market and broke sales down by device.

Google Buying Wavii After Bidding War With Apple
Google has bought aggregation and summarization startup Wavii for more than $30 million, winning a bidding war with Apple over the firm. DirecTV prepping voice search app for this summer
Help is on the way. DirecTV has been demoing a new app, due out in beta this summer, that will let you search using voice for your desired programs or movies. You can use an actor's name, a show title, or just about anything that would identify a program. DirecTV has partnered with Nuance, the company behind Siri from Apple, for the voice recognition so the app is likely to work as least as well as Siri at recognizing your input. It's welcome news if you are suffering "death by typing" using the DirecTV remote, or even the current DTV iOS app.

A history of Apple's share price
Anybody who has been watching Apple's share prices since September 2012 would think that the company is in the midst of a huge crisis. Shares of AAPL have dropped from a high of over US$700 a share to around $400 now, and the financial press is sure that the company is doomed. NPD Group: iTunes owns the Internet video market
We'll find out how Apple's financial fortunes are faring a bit later this afternoon, but for now there's a report out of The NPD Group showing that Apple now dominates home digital video the way it does the digital music market.

Apple to Open New Retail Locations in Melbourne and Quebec on Saturday [iOS Blog]
Two new Apple retail stores will open on Saturday, April 27 in Melbourne, Australia and Quebec, Canada. Apple's new Melbourne store will be located in the Highpoint Shopping Centre, a large indoor mall with more than 500 stores. This will mark the fifth Apple retail location in the Melbourne area. We live in a world positively soaked in data nowadays. Fortunately, the capacity to store that data has gotten bigger in volume, smaller in physical size, and cheaper per gigabyte as time progresses. ITC invalidates Motorola proximity sensor patent in suit against Apple
With all of the Samsung vs. Apple conflict in the courts, one could be forgiven for losing track of the fact that Apple has a lingering patent dispute with Google's Motorola Mobility subsidiary as well. Bloomberg is reporting that the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) recently upheld a previous court's judgement which held that a Motorola patent asserted against Apple was invalid.
The patent in question is U.S. Patent No. 6,246,862 and encompasses functionality whereby a mobile device ignores unintended touches when in close proximity to a user's face. This is the capability that allows touchscreen phones to avoid "cheekdialing" during a call.

Apple's online services are again suffering outages, their official system status page indicates. Between 7:20 and 9:32AM Eastern, some people may have been unable to access the iTunes Store or make purchases there. Still ongoing however are problems preventing people from creating Apple IDs or signing into Game Center, as well as authentication errors when trying to use iCloud. Unsere heutige App of the Day heißt FocusTwist und erlaubt es Fotos aufzunehmen und deren Fokussierung nachträglich zu ändern, ähnlich wie bei einer Lichtfeldkamera.
Im Gegensatz zu einer echten 4-D-Lichtfeldkamera wie der hier vorgestellten Lytro, ist dieser App nicht die Richtung des einfallenden Lichtes bekannt. FocusTwist erstellt schlicht eine Reihe von Fotos mit unterschiedlicher Fokussierung und fügt diese zu einem einzigen interaktiven Foto zusammen. Nichtsdestotrotz ähneln sich die Ergebnisse.

PSA: Twitter is down for some, as is iCloud and the iTunes Store
Nope, it's not your picture of "the best duck confit I've ever had" that's causing your Twitter post to error out -- the service is down for "some users," says a Twitter status page update. It's unknown what's causing the issue (again, probably not your photweet), but we're assured "engineers are currently working on this issue." Hang tight! But maybe don't try to while away your time on the iTunes Store or by backing up your phone to iCloud, as those services are also experiencing some downtime issues this morning. An Apple support page lists both as seeing "some users affected;" we'll just have to assume engineers are also hard at work on fixing that. As always, we'll let you know when things get better.

NPD today released a new report highlighting the U.S. online digital video market for 2012, finding that Apple continues to dominate both purchases and rentals. In looking at purchased content, Apple holds a commanding 67% of the TV show market and 65% of the movie market, with its closest competitors Xbox Video and Amazon each holding roughly 10% of the market. Payouts in 'Antennagate' class action suit reach iPhone 4 owners
iPhone 4 owners are beginning to receive $15 checks as their part of the settlement in a class action lawsuit against Apple, notes 9to5Mac. iTunes neu mit «Lade später»-Option für Musik und Video
Apple hat in der letzten Woche eine neue iTunes-Funktion hinzugefügt, welche von vielen schon seit längerem gewünscht worden ist. Wie so oft bei einem neuen Dienst von Apple gibt es Einschränkungen für Nutzer aus der Schweiz, Deutschland und Österreich.
In einigen Ländern können Nutzer neu beim Download einer kompletten TV-Serie oder einer einzelnen Episode, beim Download eines Films sowie beim Download eines Musik «Box Sets» entscheiden, ob der Inhalt bereits jetzt herunterladen werden soll oder ob man den Download später ausführt. Wer nur einen einzelnen Song herunterlädt, der kommt momentan noch nicht in den Genuss dieser neuen Option des «späteren Ladens». Die Option für den späteren Kauf ist nur in denjenigen Ländern verfügbar, in welchen «iTunes in the Cloud» für Videos und Musik unterstützt wird. «iTunes in the Cloud» wird im deutschsprachigen Raum jedoch erst für Musik unterstützt, nicht aber für Filme. Ausserdem benötigt diese neue Funktion mindestens iTunes 11 oder iOS 6.

For now, the special characters Apple is restricting are the checkmark, the explosion, the "no symbol," and the speech bubble. Nokia's injunction yesterday has now been made a little more concrete. The Amsterdam district court has apparently handing down a 10-month ban on STMicroelectronics selling its high-amplitude mics to anyone other than the Finnish phone maker. Heute Abend Q2-Quartalszahlen von Apple
Heute Abend um ca. 23 Uhr wird Apple die Zahlen für das zweite Fiskalquartal 2013 bekanntgeben. Laut Analysten-Schätzungen könnte das diesjährige «Frühjahrs»-Quartal, welches von Januar bis März dauerte, das Erste seit 10 Jahren sein, in welchem Apples Gewinn gegenüber dem Vorjahr nicht mehr gewachsen ist. Die Analysten gehen von einem Gewinn von 10.07 US-Dollar pro verwässerter Aktie aus, während vor einem Jahr ein Gewinn von 12.30 US-Dollar pro Aktie erzielt wurde. Vor einem Jahr lag die Marge noch bei 47.4 Prozent — Apple selbst prognostizierte für das vergangene Quartal eine deutlich tiefere Marge von 37.5 bis 38.5 Prozent.
Beim Umsatz dürfte Apple jedoch erneut ein Rekord-Ergebnis erzielen. Die Schätzungen belaufen sich derzeit auf Durchschnittlich 42.59 Milliarden US-Dollar — damit wäre das vergangene Quartal das beste zweite Fiskalquartal der Apple-Geschichte. Vor einem Jahr setzte Apple im «Q2 2012» 39.19 Milliarden US-Dollar um.

ITC tosses final Motorola patent against Apple from 2010 claim
The US International Trade Commission (USITC) has tossed Motorola Mobile's final patent claim against Apple from its 2010 complaint. Google and Motorola Mobile were attempting to obtain a sales embargo on any iPhones using the technology. The patent asserted was a "sensor-controlled user interface for portable communication device" which gives mobile devices the ability to "lock out" screen touches when the phone is up to a user's ear while taking a phone call.

Apple opening, building new Australian stores
Apple is opening a new store in Melbourne, Australia this weekend at the Highpoint Shopping Centre. The new store, the second in Melbourne, will open at 10 AM local time on Saturday, April 27. The company is also, say sources, close to opening a store in Adelaide in South Australia, the first for that city and the state. Job listings for the Adelaide store gave away its presence, along with a signature black curtain covering part of the frontage of Rundle Place. Bericht: Apple retourniert bis zu 8 Millionen fehlerhafte iPhones
Das «China Business Journal» berichtet unter Berufung auf ungenannte Quellen, dass es im März zu einer grossen Retournierungs-Aktion von Apple an Foxconn gekommen ist. Apple soll insgesamt 5 Millionen iPhones an Foxconn zurückgeschickt haben, weil die Qualität der Geräte nicht dem Standard von Apple entsprach. Insgesamt sollen sogar 8 Millionen Geräte von den Qualitätsproblemen betroffen sein, wie ein Insider gegenüber dem «China Business Journal» bestätigte.
Es ist unbekannt, welche iPhone-Generation von den Problemen betroffen ist. Bei den von Apple gerügten Mängeln soll es sich um Probleme bei der äusseren Erscheinung sowie um Funktionsprobleme handeln.

On the heels of its earning announcements in which it saw a significant jump in users, Netflix has updated its iOS app (free) to version 4.0 with various improvements in episode selection, audio and subtitle selection and various bug fixes. The iPad gets a new episode chooser to make finding specific episodes of a TV show easier, while both the iPhone and iPad versions gain a redesigned audio and subtitle options selector. Timebar ($2.99) has got to be one of the wackier utilities I've come across but it's one that may deserve to find a loyal audience.
It works like this: You pull down the menu, set a stop time and an optional audio alert. Click "Start" and boom, the menu bar at the top of your screen transforms into a progress bar. A blue line moves from right to left, providing a visual indicator of the time remaining.

Construction on Apple campus in Austin TX continues
Photos revealed on AppleInsider have shown that construction on the first phase of Apple's new Austin, Texas expansion campus is progressing smoothly. From outward appearances, the first of two planned office buildings and a parking garage in the first phase of the construction are already well along, with the former already having been painted hand having had its glass windows installed. Apple has dropped the price on some of its refurbished iPads, offering an additional $50 discount on the iPad 2 Wi-Fi + 3G and the third generation iPad Wi-Fi + Cellular. Apple has won a small victory in its long standing case against Google's Motorola, reports Bloomberg, after the United States International Trade Commission (ITC) upheld an earlier invalidation of a patent that threatened imports of the iPhone 4 into the U.S.The decision marks the latest instance in which neither Cupertino, California-based Apple nor Google has been able to strike a decisive blow against its competitor in a squabble that began more than two years ago. Each has claimed the other is infringing patents, and Apple accused Motorola Mobility of breaching obligations to license some of its most widely used technology on fair terms.
