ITC tosses Motorola's sensor-based complaint against Apple
If you thought the patent war between Motorola (Google) and Apple was already over, you were mistaken. Though, today's decision by the ITC to toss Moto's complaint against Cupertino regarding the use of sensors to control the interface of a phone, might be the final blow struck. Netflix Launches Family Plan, 4 Simultaneous Streams for $12/Month [iOS Blog]
Netflix announced today that it is rolling out a number of family friendly features in the coming months, designed to make it easier for families with multiple Netflix users to use the service. First, the company is introducing a new $12/month streaming plan that offers four simultaneous streams of video, meant for members with large families that run into Netflix's two-simultaneous stream limit. The normal Netflix subscription is $8/month. Second, the company is introducing a new feature to allow different family members to log their own viewing habits and get recommendations based on what shows they like. Two great board games headed to iOS: Talisman Prologue and Eclipse
There's some great news today about two different -- both excellent -- physical board games headed to digital versions on the App Store. First up, the game Eclipse has been submitted to the App Store as a digital app. This is a great galaxy-spanning civilization builder, and the physical component has dozens and dozens of little miniatures and pieces to play with, so it'll be nice to have an iPad-based version around. The price hasn't yet been revealed, and it's unclear just how soon the game will be out, but if Apple doesn't have any problems with the submission, we should see it later on this week.

Aus für Futurama: Comedy Central ordert keine 8. Staffel (Abwarten)

Comedy Central gibt keine weitere Staffel von Futurama in Auftrag, womit die Sendung zum zweiten Mal gecancelt wird: nach der vierten Staffel hatte Fox 2003 Matt Groenings SciFi-Serie aus dem Programm geworfen, aber 2008 ging es dann auf Comedy Central weiter, zunächst mit Filmen, ab 2010 dann mit neuen Staffeln. Aber damit ist nun wiederum Schluss, die letzte Folge der 7. Staffel, die am 4. September auf Cartoon Network laufen wird, soll auch die letzte sein - jedenfalls vorerst, wie Sender und Groening einhellig diffus verkünden. Abwarten und Slurm trinken.

Southdale Apple Store replaces smaller Edina mall location

Kids' iPad magazine Timbuktu rethinks in-app purchasing model
Timbuktu is an iPad magazine meant for children, and as our friends over at TechCrunch have noted, its developers recently rethought how it implements in-app purchases. The previous incarnation of Timbuktu (and most famously, Smurf Village, among others), made in-app purchases too tempting and easy for children. Apple adds 'Later' option for larger iTunes downloads
Apple has quietly added a "Later" option for iTunes downloads, reports say. The feature appears in both iTunes 11 and iOS 6, and lets people buy larger files without immediately downloading them. Items then show up in the Purchased section of a person's iTunes account, where they can then be downloaded when a reliable Internet connection is available.

Priceline says mobile flight bookers like taking it easy
Priceline.com is one of the most well-known flight and hotel booking sites out there, and the company recently shared some information with TUAW about how its mobile device-based users tend to set up travel. The company identified three trends for the people booking flights from mobile devices like iPhones and iPads, presumably through the company's iOS app.
First, those who booked air travel on mobile devices tended to be younger than the average purchaser of a flight ticket on a desktop. Netflix added 3 million subscribers worldwide in Q1, will offer a 4-stream $11.99 plan
Netflix has reported its financial results for the first quarter of 2013, and in that period it's added over three million customers worldwide. Yahoo! updates iPhone app with Summly integration
Yahoo! CEO Marissa Meyer must really be cracking the whip lately, as the company has been on a roll when it comes to updating its apps or coming out with completely new apps like Yahoo! Weather. Today's news is that the company has updated its namesake iOS news app (free) to version 3.0, adding an exhaustive list of new features.

Apple ließ 5-8 Millionen iPhones an Foxconn zurückgehen

Logitech G series now available: Gaming keyboards and mice for Mac
We heard way back in January that Logitech was possibly planning to bring its gaming peripherals to the Mac, and that's exactly what's happened. Apple donates $8 million to Ya'an earthquake relief
Apple has pledged $8 million towards earthquake relief in Ya'an, according to an official statement on its Chinese website. The company has also offered its "deepest condolences" in the wake of the disaster, which hit Ya'an on Saturday. The quake measured 6.6 on the Richter scale, and has killed at least 186 people, injuring over 11,000, according to state media.

Apple has added a new 'download later' prompt to large media purchases made in iTunes or on the mobile iTunes Store, reports Macworld. The new prompt appears when purchasing movies, TV shows, TV Season Passes, full TV seasons, movie bundles, and music box sets. When purchasing any of the above items using iTunes 11 on a Mac or Windows PC, or an iOS device running iOS 6 or later, you’re now presented with Later and Download (or Download All) buttons. Apple claims that Google's search methodology in ongoing legal dispute is flawed
While Apple emerged victorious in its patent suit against Samsung last Summer, the two tech behemoths have another trial looming concerning Samsung's Galaxy Nexus smartphone along with a slew of other Samsung devices. Consequently, 2014 will see both Apple and Samsung take center stage yet again in an entirely new patent suit, held in the same jurisdiction with the same judge.
The 2014 patent trial is currently in the discovery phase of litigation, and Florian Mueller recently stumbled upon a rather interesting motion filed by Apple entitled, "Google's Search Methodology Was Clearly Flawed."

Dropbox iOS app updated with support for 6 new languages
Earlier this month Dropbox announced support for 6 new languages on the desktop and Android devices. AppShopper returns to the App Store with new social discovery focus
AppShopper, a popular app-recommendation tool, disappeared from the App Store this past December when Apple ruled it didn't meet the company's updated store guidelines. The guideline that AppShopper specifically violated states, "Apps that display Apps other than your own for purchase or promotion in a manner similar to or confusing with the App Store will be rejected."

WhereverTV streaming service still exists, is now available on iOS

Cricket cuts monthly fees for iPhone, other devices
US prepaid carrier Cricket Wireless has launched new, cheaper monthly plans. An added family bundle includes two smartphone plans for $40 each, versus the $50 per phone the carrier would normally charge. Significantly Cricket has also lowered the base cost for its iPhone plans to $50 per month, which gets subscribers unlimited calling and texts, plus 1GB of unthrottled data. Auto manufacturers slow to adopt Siri Eyes Free
Remember the hoopla at last year's WWDC when Apple announced Siri Eyes Free? The feature was designed to use a car's onboard voice-recognition hardware to process voice input and pass it along to Apple's Siri. Love Tumblr? Well, reality just hit the service, which is under pressure to generate revenues. As a result, you'll start seeing ads (AKA "sponsored posts") in your Tumblr stream in the iOS and Android apps starting today.

Apple has updated its Chinese homepage in recognition of the earthquake that stuck parts of the country over the weekend. A translation by Engadget reads:

Sources says fingerprint tech causing next-gen iPhone delay
Production of a next-generation iPhone -- commonly labeled the iPhone 5S -- may be delayed, Reuters says. Japanese and Taiwanese supplier sources tell the news agency that 5S production was originally expected to start in June, but that Apple may be encountering manufacturing issues. In particular, one source says that Apple is building a fingerprint sensor into the phone, but having trouble finding a coating material that doesn't interfere. That pricey Summly acquisition is beginning to bear fruit. Yahoo today announced the latest version of its eponymous mobile app, sporting language algorithms and machine learning picked up when it bought the program a little under a month ago. The company's utilizing the technology to help news stories fit better on that little screen or yours, allowing you to further customize the flow of articles to mold to your own reading habits. Bund lanciert elektronischen Impfausweis
Das Bundesamt für Gesundheit (BAG) hat in der letzten Woche den elektronischen Impfausweis lanciert. Mit dem Ausweiss soll dem Patienten und dem Arzt über das Internet ein schneller Zugriff auf die wichtigsten Gesundheitsdaten gewährt werden können.
In den Genuss des elektronischen Impfausweises kommt man durch eine Registrierung auf der Web-Seite «meineimpfungen.ch». Danach können die Daten des Impfbüchleins entweder manuell eingegeben werden oder man scannt das Impfbüchlein ein. Der Nutzer kann auswählen, ob er die Daten durch das «Genfer Zentrum für Vakzinologie» validieren lassen will. Bis am 27. April bleibt die Validierung durch die Fachpersonen kostenlos, danach wird eine Gebühr von 10 Franken erhoben.
Neben den Impfdaten können auch Allergien oder chronische Krankheiten erfasst werden. Personen, welche aus persönlichen Gründen eine spezielle Impfung ablehnen, können dies auf der Web-Seite entsprech

5-8 million faulty iPhones returned to Foxconn, source claims
Apple has returned a batch of millions of botched iPhones to its main manufacturing partner, Foxconn, a source at the latter company tells China Business. It's believed that anywhere between 5 and 8 million units were returned for various unspecified defects. As the cost to manufacture is estimated to be $200 per phone, Foxconn could be taking a loss of as much as $1.6 billion.

New Photos Show Inside of iPad 5 Rear Shell, iPhone 5S SIM Tray
Case company Tactus, which last week shared a photo of what was claimed to be the polycarbonate rear shell of Apple's rumored lower-cost iPhone, has now posted a new photo allegedly showing the inside of the fifth-generation iPad's rear shell. News: Report: Apple rejects 5-8m iPhones from Foxconn
Apple has returned at least 5 million iPhones to Foxconn due to substandard appearance or dysfunctional problems, according to a new report out of China. An anonymous source said the number of rejected iPhones could be as high as 8 million. It’s estimated the issues could cost Foxconn as much as $1.6 billion to cover the cost of replacement handsets. Apple: Record sales expected, profit to take first hit in 10 years
Apple shares have plunged below $400 on the back of poll of 48 analysts which indicates that the company is set to announce record sales, but a slump in profits for the first time in 10 years, reports CNET. At the time of writing, Apple's stock was trading at $390, down over 44 percent from its record high of $702.11 reached some seven months ago. Although Apple is expected to report the strongest second quarter sales in its history, a sharp decline of around 10 percent in gross margins is expected to take the shine of the company's result.

iOS-Werbeeinnahmen sind viermal höher als diejenigen von Android
Das Unternehmen «mopub» veröffentlichte letzte Woche Zahlen zu den Werbeausgaben, welche für Werbung auf mobilen Geräten getätigt worden sind. Der Analyse zufolge stiegen auch im ersten Quartal 2013 die Ausgaben für Werbung auf mobilen Geräten an, obwohl es im Januar zu einem stärkeren Rückgang kam als in den Jahren zuvor.
Über das ganze Jahr 2013 hinweg gesehen geht das Unternehmen von Werbeausgaben von rund 7.3 Milliarden US-Dollar aus. Noch 2012 gaben die Werbeagenturen lediglich 4.1 Milliarden US-Dollar für Werbung auf mobilen Geräten aus und im Jahr 2011 waren es erst 1.4 Milliarden US-Dollar.
Gemäss «mopub» haben die beteiligten Unternehmen bei der Effektivität der mobilen Werbung bedeutende Fortschritte gemacht, womit künftig wohl noch mehr finanzielle Ressourcen in diesem Bereich investiert werden.

I need to navigate into an app's packaged resources folder, find one or more icon files, occasionally convert them to PNG and scale them, and add them to my document, Keynote presentation, etc. Fortunately, this doesn't need to be a manual process each time, thanks to the following AppleScript.

Endlich amtlich: Erster Apple Store in Berlin wird demnächst am Ku-Damm eröffnet

Eigentlich wusste es jeder von Beginn an, dass Apple an der edlen Adresse am Berliner Kurfürstendamm 26 einen Apple Store eröffnen wird. Aber wie immer hüllte sich die Firma in Mysterien und Geheimnistuerei als würde hier gerade das Bernsteinzimmer entdeckt. Wie auch immer. Nun ist vorbei mit dem Stealthmode. Erster Bieter für Dell hat Interesse verloren
Nach wie vor ist unklar, wie die Zukunft Dells aussehen wird. Facebook plant Expansion in die Schweiz
Die «SonntagsZeitung» hatte in der gestrigen Ausgabe die Gelegenheit, mit Facebooks Geschäftsführerin Sheryl Sandberg ein Interview zu führen.
Während des Interviews bestätigte die Managerin des Sozialen Netzwerks erstmals Pläne für die Einrichtung einer Facebook-Niederlassung in der Schweiz. Genauere Details wollte Sandberg allerdings nicht nennen, weil die Pläne noch nicht spruchreif seien.
Mit einer Facebook-Niederlassung würde ein weiterer IT-Konzern eine Niederlassung in der Schweiz aufbauen. Bereits haben beispielsweise Google und IBM wichtige Forschungskapazitäten in der Schweiz aufgebaut, was die Attraktivität des schweizerischen Standortes unterstreicht.
Facebook befindet sich in Europa auf Wachstumskurs. Neben dem europäischen Hauptsitz im irischen Dublin betreibt das soziale Netzwerk ein Rechenzentrum in Schweden sowie ein Büro in Berlin. Weitere Standorts sollen gemäss Sandberg folgen.
