A small number of Apple TVs eligible for replacement due to Wi-Fi issues
Apple has emailed a note to Apple Store and AppleCare employees as well as authorized resellers stating that a small number of third-generation Apple TVs have an issue with Wi-Fi and are eligible for replacement free of charge up to two years after the device was purchased.
Information supplied to the 9to5Mac website mentions that the affected Apple TV products "might experience one of these Wi-Fi related connectivity issues: Cannot locate network, Unable to join network, Dropped or intermittent connection." Serial numbers must be within a specified range in order for the device to be eligible for replacement:

Facebook Home expands beyond the US, now up for download in Canada and the UK
Facebook promised that other countries would be getting Home for Android sometime after the US rollout, but it didn't have much more to offer in the way of specifics at its launch event earlier this month. iPhoto 9.4.3 mit verbessertem Fotostream

Slew of updates include Java, Safari, iPhoto and Aperture
Apple decided to push a lot of updates this afternoon, most of them related to a Java update that disables the Java SE 6 applet plug-in. By disabling the plugin, Apple is allowing consumers to re-enable it on a case-by-case basis. Apple has provided a full guide to the new plug-in options.

Snapchat users share 150 million photos daily
Speaking at the All Things D: Dive into Mobile conference in New York City today, Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel revealed that the popular photo-sharing app is much more popular than anyone may have imagined.
Specifically, Spiegel noted that Snapchat users send over 150 million photos through the service every single day. That figure was 50 million back in December 2012, indicating that Snapchat has enjoyed tremendous growth in a relatively short amount of time.

Apple Releases Safari and Java Updates With Plug-In and Security Improvements
Apple today released a series of updates for both Safari and Java, addressing continued issues with Java security. The Safari updates arrive as version 6.0.4 for OS X Mountain Lion and Lion and version 5.1.9 for OS X Snow Leopard. NYT wins Pulitzer for Apple 'iEconomy' investigations
The winners of the 2013 Pulitzer Prizes were announced Monday, with the New York Times winning this year's prize for explanatory reporting. The award was for the paper's "iEconomy" series investigating the way business has adapted to the changing global economy, largely focusing on Apple.

Intel reports Q1 earnings: $12.6 billion revenue, $2 billion net income
Intel just reported a quarterly net income of $2 billion, with $12.6 billion in revenue for a total earnings of 40 cents per share. Net income is down 17 percent compared to Q4 2012, when the company reported $2.5 billion in profit. Revenue is also down by seven percent compared to the previous quarter's $13.5 billion. Schmidt urges Apple return to Google Maps in future iOS update
Google would like Apple to return to Google Maps in a future version of iOS, chairman Eric Schmidt said today at an AllThingsD conference. "We would still really like them to use our maps," said Schmidt. "It would be easy for them to take the app in the store and put it as their basic one." The executive declined to comment on why Apple went with a proprietary system instead of continuing to use Google code and data, or whether the two companies are in talks.

Purported iPad 5 cases appear at Hong Kong Electronics show
A case purported to be for a new model of iPad was acquired earlier today by Engadget. The case appears to closely resemble the dimensions and chamfering of previously leaked cases earlier in the year. According to the staff at the booth, the case is based on a "leaked" mold from the factory making the case parts for Apple.

Hands-On: Samsung Galaxy Mega (Video)
Das Samsung Galaxy Mega ist der ganz große Bruder des S4: unsere Kollegen konnten jetzt die 6,3-Zoll Version bei einer Samsung-Veranstaltung kurz antesten. Anders als erwartet liegt das Mega trotz Übergröße erstaunlich gut in der Hand und ist sehr leicht: tatsächlich scheint es vom Gehäuse her einfach ein hochgezoomtes S4 zu sein, sogar die graublaue Farbe ist die gleiche. Telenav is offering car companies an embedded navigation system that links to smartphones
One of the problems with using an iPhone or other smartphone for navigation is the screen size. Manipulating the phone while driving can be a serious distraction. Telenav announced today a new embedded system called Scout for Cars that lets your smartphone running a Telenav Scout application to connect to the built-in car navigation screen. That keeps the navigation data up to date, and lets routing or other information be seamlessly transferred between the Scout app and the in-car system.
Scout for Cars works in two directions, allowing navigation information from the head unit to go back to the Telenav app for last mile information or walking directions to a destination.

Leaked AppGratis document promises higher App Store rankings
AppGratis is promising developers higher App Store rankings, despite claims to the contrary by the company's CEO, according to Business Insider. La Playa Hotel Lifts 30-Year Ban on Apple Corporate Retreats [Mac Blog]
Back in 1983, Apple's Macintosh team attended a retreat at the La Playa Carmel hotel in Carmel, California, where employee shenanigans resulted in a 30-year company gathering ban from the resort. Facebook 6.0 for iOS available, Loren Brichter "helping" at Facebook
Facebook Home isn't available for iPhone, but given its mixed reviews since launch that may be a blessing in disguise. However one of Home's features, Chat Heads, is now available for iOS' Facebook app with Version 6.0.
Chat Heads is a riff on notifications. Instead of seeing a notification stating you've got a message, a circular picture of your friend's head appears. iOS Chat Heads only show up when you're using the Facebook app, unlike in Facebook Home when they show up no matter what you're doing. The update will also bring Stickers into the main Facebook app, along with an updated interface for iPad users to make it more along the lines of the recent desktop update.

Panasonic Lumix GF6 announced for the US, shipping in June for $600
Panasonic's latest entry-level Micro Four Thirds cam appears to follow the design language (and perhaps usability) of its GF predecessors, but at least it's got WiFi, right? Apple Maintains Digital Music Dominance, But Amazon Making Significant Gains
NPD has released its most recent report examining digital music downloads in the United States. The research firm reports that Apple continues to hold a 63% share of the market down from 66% in 2010, with Amazon at 22%, up from 13% 3 years ago. Some 44 million Americans bought at least one song last year, with NPD saying that number has remained stable over the past three years. “Since the launch of Apple’s iTunes store, digital music downloads have become the dominant revenue source for the recorded music industry and iTunes continues to be the dominant retailer,” said

Mailbox no longer requires users to wait in line
More than 2 months after its original launch, the Dropbox-owned Mailbox iOS app is now available without the need to wait in line. Thanks to Dropbox's acquisition of the software, developers have been able to scale the Mailbox service to deliver more than 100 million message per day, giving them the confidence to remove the reservation system. Mailbox looks to improve upon existing iOS e-mail implementations by using a gesture system to simplify common actions, such as archiving or trashing messages.

Facebook for iOS gets Chat Heads, News Feed improvements
Facebook is today releasing a major update of its iOS app, v6.0. The biggest addition is Chat Heads, something recently introduced to Android via Facebook Home and an updated Messenger app. Unlike Android, the iOS Chat Heads can only run within the Facebook app, but do let people keep tabs on conversations without having to leave other views. Heads can be dragged around a screen or dismissed entirely.

LG invites press to "share the genius" event on May 1st
We're not quite sure what it is yet, but LG has just invited us to save the date May 1st for a special event held in New York city, in which it asks us to "share the genius" and "capture the spotlight in true brilliance." Apple publishes development job postings in Florida
Apple is beginning to recruit engineers in the Orlando, Fla., area for the designing, building and testing of custom chips, according to a post today on AppleInsider.
The job postings included seven positions focused on development and testing of processor hardware, as well as others for driver development on graphics processors. AppleInsider notes that several other positions are open, including one for a reference model engineer specializing in modeling GPU hardware. Another job posting describes running iOS on "pre-silicon platforms."

Apple wins patents on iOS app folder management
Apple has won two US patents on the iOS folder system. The first is titled Device, method, and graphical user interface for managing folders, and specifically documents the way iOS users can create folders by tapping and holding an app icon, which triggers a "jiggle mode" that lets people rearrange apps. Dragging one app on top of another puts the two items into a new folder. Alternately, tapping X on an icon lets people remove an app from a device entirely, and icons can be dragged out of existing folders.

According to Ad Age's unnamed sources, Facebook is preparing to launch a somewhat invasive ad program this summer through its news feed. Job listings point to Apple starting Orlando-based chip development
Apple is planning to set up chip development facilities in Orlando, Florida, seven job listings discovered by AppleInsider indicate. Most are related to developing and testing processors. One of them calls for a "GPU Csim/Reference Model Engineer" who would specialize in "modeling GPU hardware;" the listing also mentions running iOS on "pre-silicon platforms." Trader pleads guilty to making unauthorized purchase of nearly $1 billion in Apple shares
The FBI reports that a trader who last year made an unauthorized purchase of nearly US$1 billion worth of Apple stock has pled guilty to wire fraud, securities fraud, and conspiracy.

Selbst finanziert und entwickelt von gerade mal vier ehemaligen Programmierern von Quantic Dream, Sony Liverpool und Dontnod geht es im auf der Unreal Engine 4 basierenden Game um Multiplayer-Geballer in futuristischen Fluggeräten, mal mit mehr Platz und Luft drumherum, mal in klaustrophobischen, todessternartigen Tunneln, aber so wie es aussieht erstaunlich weitläufigen großen Maps. Erste Beta für Adobe Lightroom 5 erschienen
Adobe hat die erste öffentliche Vorabversion der Fotoverwaltungs-Software «Lightroom 5» zum Download freigegeben. Bei der neusten Version von Lightroom wird Adobe auf eine vollständige Neugestaltung verzichten und stattdessen punktuelle Verbesserungen vornehmen.
Einige Tastenkombinationen wurden — wie bei Apples «Aperture» — durch einfachere Shortcuts ersetzt. Der Vollbildmodus lässt sich nun beispielsweise mit der F-Taste aufrufen, anstelle dass man sich einer Tastenkombination bedienen muss.
Mit der Funktion «Advanced Healing Brush» ist es künftig möglich, auf einfache Weise Gebäude oder andere störende Objekte in einem Bild verschwinden zu lassen. Dazu wählt man das störende Objekt mit einem Pinsel aus und Lightroom sucht automatisch nach einer geeigneten Quelle, um den Bereich zu ersetzen. Apple updates Xcode to 4.6.2; offers minor update, fixes
Late on Monday, Apple released a minor update to its development environment software for the Mac, Xcode, which is used to build applications for both OS X and iOS. The new version, 4.6.2, improves LLDB performance for debugging Objective-C code, and fixes and issue where the crash log database could grow to very large sizes, along with the usual assortment of bug fixes and stability improvements. Reports: unknown iPhone, iOS 7 showing up in weblogs
Developer and website logs have begun to record visits from a previously known iPhone model, and even indicating that the devices are using iOS 7, the next major revision that is expected to offer a design overhaul as well. While such OS and device data may possibly be faked, many of the reports are from the unique IP block assigned to Apple, lending credibility. The trickle of Google Glass details has suddenly turned into a flood tonight, as 9to5Google points out a support page listing the device's technical specs. While we knew some bits about its capabilities, the official list reveals its display will be equivalent to a 25-inch HD screen viewed from eight feet away, while it's camera does 5MP stills and 720p video. Trader pleads guilty in $1B AAPL stock fraud case
David Miller, a former stock trader who brought down his employer in a bet on Apple stock, has pleaded guilty to wire fraud and conspiracy in a plea deal reached with prosecutors. The incident began when Miller improperly bought 1,000 times the number of shares requested by a customer, expecting Apple's stock price to rise and then selling off the excess stock and pocketing the profit before the fraud was noticed. He had been facing up to 25 years in prison for the fraud, but instead will likely see a five-to-eight year sentence.

Steve Jackson's Sorcery! is an old series back from the early 1980s where you "played" through a sort of Choose Your Own Adventure-style story, except that instead of just flipping pages, you actually cast spells, fight in combat, and do other fantasy-based activities. Kodak unloading document image scanning to Brother
Eastman Kodak has reached a preliminary agreement with Brother Industries for the sale of certain assets of its document image scanning business for a cash purchase price of approximately $210 million. Survey: Half of Chinese users want to own a Galaxy S4 instead of an iPhone
As we've reported quite a bit, Apple has been working hard to try and grow its influence in China. That nation has become the world's largest smartphone market, and so Apple has plenty of reason to be promoting itself and selling as many phones as possible. A new survey shows that as much work as Apple has been doing in the region, it may be behind already. According to research from Trendforce, almost 60% of 5,000 Chinese smartphone users polled say they would rather buy the newest Samsung Galaxy S4 than Apple's latest iPhone.

iPhone 5S to reportedly come with 12-megapixel camera, improved low light mode
