Apple's updated iPhone 5 for T-Mobile goes through FCC testing
An iPhone native to T-Mobile USA has been the stuff of legend for so long that we still have a hard time believing it's real, even after the carrier confirmed it in no uncertain terms. We're a little more credulous now that Apple has run the iPhone 5 through some class permission changes at the FCC. True to the words of Apple and T-Mobile, the updated A1428 is now clear to use 42Mbps HSPA

DICE+ launches $99 developer kit, pre-orders for $40 consumer model start this summer
Game Technologies, the Poland-based company behind the little electronic die that is DICE+, has just announced a $99 developer edition that bundles a transparent-cased model along with its software development kit. As a reminder, the DICE+ is an inch-sized rubberized cube packed with Bluetooth, an accelerometer and a rechargeable battery, with the aim of bringing human interaction to electronic board games and beyond. Gazelle Chief Gadget Officer looks at resale trends, sees the end of the iPod
Anthony Scarsella is the Chief Gadget Officer at Gazelle, the online equipment repurposing company. Every quarter Scarsella publishes his reCommerce Report, a look at trends that the company is seeing in terms of devices submitted to Gazelle for recycling and resale. Among the fascinating stats in the Q1 2013 report is that the company saw a huge increase of almost 80 percent in iPod trades in December and January, leading Scarsella to speculate that we're beginning to see the "end of the iPod."

LG patents RFID-labelled cookbook, attempts to offer more than just another place to spill sauce
LG is no stranger to mixing together patents and white goods and this time its trying to bridge the gap between recipes and those all-too-often underwhelming results. T-Mobile execs clarify throttling, Wi-Fi Calling policies
T-Mobile CEO John Legere and other executives have clarified the carrier's policy on data throttling and Wi-Fi Calling in the wake of the company's iPhone announcement. During a Q&A session, they stated that throttling measures will only drop users to 3G speeds if they're on a fixed plan and exceed their data caps. Anyone on an unlimited data plan will be able to continue at full speed, as long as they aren't interfering with other customers.

Apple.com world's 8th more popular website in new ComScore ranking
For 2012, Apple's website was ranked as the world's 11th most popular. However, that ranking did not take mobile access into account -- just desktop access. Now web analytics firm ComScore has added mobile visitors and viewers to their count, pushing Apple up to the number 8 spot on the MMX Multi-Platform Top 50 Properties list.
The first five sites on the list are not surprising, with Google sites taking the lead followed by Yahoo!, Microsoft, Facebook and Amazon. Sites run by TUAW parent company AOL are in the 6th spot, followed by Glam Media and finally Apple. Rounding out the top 10 are Wikimedia sites and CBS Interactive.

Asymco’s Horace Dediu broke down iTunes’ economy and placed it in context with the entire Apple revenue model. The excellent diagram above illustrates Apple’s revenues in Q4 2012. Bloomberg: Intel nearing TV service deals with Time Warner, Viacom and NBC
It's a very poorly kept secret that Intel is looking to bust in the pay-TV business. Rumors have been circulating since at least December that the chip giant is working on its own set-top box and hopes to pair it with a "virtual cable" service that offers unbundled channels. Infocus releases 55-inch BigTouch all-in-one PC

Daily iPhone App: Super Stickman Golf 2 updates a modern classic
Super Stickman Golf is a great title that I've been playing for years -- it's a big standby for games journalists in particular for some reason, and every time I come to a conference full of games writers, like this week at GDC, there's always someone playing it at any given time. LG adds free Spotify trial to its latest range of home theater gear

Verizon to preload PlayPhone-backed Games Portal on Android devices
Carriers often want to provide unique device software as a lure for their services -- like it or not -- and gaming is undeniably one of the more attractive hooks. T-Mobile's iPhone 5 is a Tweaked Model A1428 Phone with AWS Support
The iPhone 5 that will be sold through T-Mobile is a modified version of the A1428 iPhone 5 that is currently produced for AT&T's network, among others. The new version of the A1428 has been tweaked on the hardware side by Apple to support Advanced Wireless Services (AWS) bands for T-Mobile's network. NimbleBit readies Nimble Quest, and then plans a return to Pocket Trains
I've met with David Marsh here in San Francisco a few times before, and somehow it always turns out that I meet with him right before his big releases. Korg's got the info on two new additions to its Kaoss line of X-Y interface touchpad controllers. First up is the KP3+ Dynamic Effect / Sampler, which adds 22 new effects to its predecessor's offerings, bringing that number up to 150. Analyst Predicts New iPhone 5S in June, Low-Cost iPhone in September
Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster has something of a mixed track record predicting Apple product releases, having expected an Apple television set for several years now. Regardless, in a research note today, Munster predicted an iPhone 5S will be released in June, and a low-cost iPhone in September. He believes the 5S will have incremental upgrades with a faster processor, better camera, and "an outside chance" that the device will gain an NFC chip as part of a digital wallet initiative. He also notes that some kind of biometric security feature is a possibility, but believes that is more likely in a future iPhone 6. Chrome update brings improved spell checking to Windows, Linux and Chrome OS
A new stable release of Chrome is out today, bringing improved spell-checking to Google's browser. Mountain View announced the update on the Chrome Blog, explaining that it refreshed the dictionaries for all supported languages -- and adding support for Albanian, Korean and Tamil. Additionally, the "Ask Google for suggestions" feature now includes grammar checking and context-sensitive spell-checking in English, so you can expect the search giant to set you straight on the difference between "affect" and "effect." China calls Apple's response to warranty complaints 'empty and self-praising'
Apple's products are overwhelmingly popular in the land where most of the devices are created -- China. But recent moves by the ruling Chinese Communist Party could spell trouble for Apple and other Western firms that currently command the smartphone market. The latest such move came yesterday when the government-controlled People's Daily newspaper ran a front-page article accusing the company of turning down journalists' requests for interviews and providing an "empty and self-praising" reply to a critical report broadcast by state-run China Central Television.

Google selects Glass Explorers, will send invites to winners over the next few days
What would you do if you had Glass? Google asked you to share your plans last month, offering up 8,000 coveted reservations in the search giant's "Explorers" program. Now, the company has finally selected the winners, and plans to send out order invitations "over the next few days." Gmail push notification no longer works with Mail on new iOS devices
Google's Gmail has provided push notification to iOS users through Mail.app for years, but an announced change has taken effect that will leave users with new devices without push notification in the iPhone's native mail app.

A big part of T-Mobile's UnCarrier plan revolves around the iPhone 5, and it turns out that T-Mo's offering the Apple flagship at a previously unheard-of price: $579. Samsung remained the world leader in "smart connected" devices during 2012, but Apple gained some ground, according to new IDC data. In all the market grew 29.1 percent year-over-year to reach over 1 billion units, and a value of $576.9 billion. At T-Mobile's UnCarrier event, there's been a lot of talk about how you, the customer, is no longer tied in. No contracts, no obligations, no restrictions, right? Turns out that new iPhone you've just paid $99 upfront for isn't so liberal, as the Magenta carrier has said that any phones you pick up will be locked to the T-Mobile network. T-Mobile to finally start carrying the iPhone, pay $99 upfront
This one falls in the "it's about time" category: the last of the national U.S. cellular carriers is finally going to offer the iPhone. T-Mobile will officially carry the iPhone starting April 12, with pre-orders beginning April 5, Engadget reports.
At the company's Uncarrier event this morning in New York City, it announced that the iPhone 5 will be available for $100 down, and the ability to pay the rest in $20 installments over the next two years. I've written here about Knights of Pen and Paper before -- it's a really great little role-playing game that portrays not just a party of fantasy adventurers fighting monsters, but the actual tabletop players behind those characters. It turns out I'm not the only one that really enjoys Knights of Pen and Paper, because Swedish publisher Paradox Interactive has picked up the game (which is developed by a company from Brazil named Behold Studios), and re-publishing it as Knights of Pen and Paper: +1 Edition.

T-Mobile's UnCarrier announcement event is taking place a little later today, but some bits of news have started to leak out ahead of time. Apple to triple franchise stores in India
The India Times is reporting that Apple plans to triple the number of franchisee stores it has in the country to 200 locations by 2015. Speaking under the conditions of anonymity, some of the 17 Indian franchisees told the India Times that Apple has asked the franchisees to dramatically scale up operations in the country as they plan for aggressive growth. In addition to expanding the number of Apple Premium Resellers, Apple also plans to expand its presence in multi-brand stores, according to the Indian Times.

Künftige Smartphones mit Displays aus Saphir-Kristall statt Glas?
Apple wurde in den letzten Jahren immer wieder dafür kritisiert, beim iPhone ein Display zu verbauen, welches zu wenig kratzempfindlich ist. Momentan verwendet Apple beim iPhone 5 das «Gorilla Glass 2» von Corning. Corning ist bestrebt, schon bald «Gorilla Glass 3» auf den Markt zu bringen. Dieses Glas soll gegenüber der Vorgängergeneration über eine grössere Kratzfestigkeit verfügen, womit das Unternehmen die Kundenbedürfnisse aufzunehmen versucht.

The Swedish Language Council appeared on Google's radar when it wanted to add the term ungoogleable (in Swedish, ogooglebar -- yep) to a list of new words. The company didn't want the word nixed, but redefined to reference Google directly and not just any general search engine -- this was the initial meaning of the term. Foxconn mit Milliarden-Gewinn
Die Lancierung des iPhone 5 und die Präsentation neuer iPad-Modelle hat nicht nur bei Apple für grosse Gewinne gesorgt, sondern auch beim wichtigsten Zulieferer Foxconn. Foxconns Mutterkonzern «Hon Hai Precision Industry Co.» präsentierte am Montag einen Jahresgewinn von 3.2 Milliarden US-Dollar. Apple arbeitet zwar auch mit anderen Auftrags-Herstellern zusammen, aber Foxconn produziert seit Jahren die meisten Produkte für Apple. Foxconn scheint von einem anhaltenden Wachstums-Trend auszugehen. So wurden in diesem Monat bisher 5’000 neue Arbeitsstellen bei Foxconn ausgeschrieben, was der grössten Rekrutierung in diesem Jahr entspricht. Die Stellenbeschreibungen machen deutlich, dass auch Foxconn mit der Zeit geht und die Produktion stärker automatisieren wird. Fiber optic cables are usually made of glass or plastic but those materials actually slow down the transmission of light ever so slightly. Die letzten zwei Jahre beherrschte ein Gerücht um ein Apple Fernseher die Gerüchtelandschaft rund um den Mac- und iPhone-Hersteller. Doch bis heute bleibt der «Apple TV» (nicht die beliebte Settop-Box, sondern eine eigenständige Fernseh-Lösung von Apple) nichts weiter als ein Gerücht. Es gibt keine konkreten Hinweise darauf, dass in Kürze tatsächlich ein Fernseher mit einem Apple-Logo auf den Markt kommen wird. Diese Tatsache schliesst eine solche Produkte-Lancierung natürlich nicht aus.
Die «Branchen-Experten» und Analysten scheinen nach zwei erfolglosen Gerüchte-Jahren nun aber nach etwas neuem Ausschau gehalten zu haben: Seit ein paar Wochen hält sich hartnäckig ein Gerücht, wonach Apple angeblich an einer intelligenten Uhr arbeiten soll. Die als «iWatch» spekulierte Apple-Uhr soll künftig Smartphones wie das iPhone komplett ersetzen, oder aber das iPhone als nützliches Hilfsmittel erweitern und unterstützen.

Der Windows Store erreicht inoffiziell 50.000 Apps

Gmail: Eingestellte Exchange-Unterstützung überrascht iOS-Benutzer

Chevrolet zeigt erste TV-Werbung mit Siris «Eyes Free»
Seit dem letzten Monat bietet der US-Autokonzern «General Motors» bei dem beiden Chevrolet-Modellen «Sonic» und «Spark» Apples «Eyes Free» als optionales Zubehör an. Damit ist Chevrolet die erste Automarke, bei welcher das an der letztjährigen WWDC vorgestellte «Eyes Free» erhältlich ist.

Hon Hai shows record profits, keeps making money from making iPhones
Hon Hai Precision, also known as Foxconn Technology, has reported its earnings for the year and notched a net income of $3.2 billion according to the Financial Times. Most familiar as the manufacturing muscle behind Apple's iPhones, iPads and the like, the Taiwan-based manufacturer beat analyst predictions on high margins for those products. Its subsidiary, Foxconn International Holdings, is the world's largest cellphone maker and produces devices for companies including Nokia and Motorola, but suffered a net loss of $316.4 million. Latest Hulu rumors suggest it could be up for sale, again
While viewers enjoy promotions like free Star Trek and Kurosawa, Hulu's owners are once again considering selling the video streaming site. Quicksilver utility for OS X out of beta after 10 years
After a beta period lasting a decade, application launcher and task manager Quicksilver for OS X 1.0 (free) has finally been released. The application, which was in the hands of its original developer for six years before finally falling to a collective group of volunteer developers to finish starting in 2009, uses mouse gestures or keyboard shortcuts to do searches, launch programs, associate file types with particular applications and other features, according to a post on the group's blog.

Report: T-Mobile to finally announce iPhone on Tuesday
After a prolonged wait following a deal struck back in December, T-Mobile will announce its plans for the iPhone and possibly the iPad as well at its "Uncarrier" event tomorrow, according to reports. The event will split its time between the iPhone announcement and the formal introduction of its already-in-effect "Uncarrier" plans, which eliminate phone subsidies and instead offer lower monthly fees but with an up-front "down payment" and a monthly charge to cover the cost of the device.

How to spring clean "Open With" duplicates
If you use your Mac for any period of time, you will find the need to open a document with a different program other than the one set as default. The "Open With" menu appears in the Finder whenever you right-click or control-click on the icon of a document. The "Open With" command is designed to give you a list of alternative choices to handle the file that you've selected, but after long-term use you will find this list can get a little bit messy.

Chevrolet unveils TV spot touting Siri 'Eyes-Free' feature
Chevrolet, the first automaker to bring Apple's Siri Eyes-Free feature to market, has debuted a new TV commercial that showcases the feature as an integral selling point for the forthcoming 2014 Chevy Sonic. The Sonic, the second production model with the feature behind the Spark, has an integrated steering-wheel button that activates Siri to allow voice control of several functions of iOS devices without ever activating the screen or relying on visual feedback.
