Starbase Orion, Heroes and Castles, and Cut the Rope get big updates
This week saw three big updates for excellent apps now available on iOS. Starbase Orion is the first one I'll mention -- it's a really great take on the "space 4X" genre (similar to Civilization or Master of Orion) that's instead designed to run on a touchscreen. The 1.1.8 update is a big one, not only celebrating the app's one-year release, but also adding an all-new tutorial (to make the game a little more understandable early on), as well as lots and lots of tweaks to starbases, weapons, and ships. Some of the tweaks actually increase costs rather than make the game easier, but hardcore strategy players probably won't mind that much. Apple makes public response to Greenlight lawsuit claims
Apple has released a public statement in response to a new lawsuit by Greenlight Capital. "Contrary to Greenlight's statements, the adoption of Proposal #2 would not prevent the issuance of preferred stock," Apple writes. "Currently, Apple's articles of incorporation provide for the issuance of 'blank check' preferred stock by the Board of Directors without Shareholder approval." With Proposal 2 in effect, the company suggests, shareholders would have the right to approve an issuance of preferred stock.

Talking to Siri: Creating reminders without times
This morning, beloved leader Victor wondered how he could create reminders using Siri without having those reminders tied to a specific time. He loves Siri's easy voice integration but didn't want to schedule these items. He just wanted to add them to his to-do list.
Possible?
You bet. The secret lies in the way you phrase your request. If you ask Siri to "remind" you, it adds a scheduled item. Saying "remind" is always tied to time.
Instead, say "remember". Try saying "Remember to pick up the milk" rather than "Remind me to pick up the milk." Siri adds that item to the Reminders app without a time cue.

AirPort Utility 6.2 extends printing, guest Wi-Fi support
Apple has posted a new version of AirPort Utility for the Mac. The tool is used to configure AirPort Wi-Fi networks. The v6.2 update makes a couple of rare feature additions, the first of which is the ability to extend guest Wi-Fi access across a network with multiple AirPort stations.

Quirky's Crossover: finally, a truly unique iPhone 5 case
As you're probably aware, TUAW does a lot of reviews of iPhone cases. To be honest with you, most of the cases don't really catch my attention anymore. But this morning I got an email from crowd-source design firm Quirky about the Crossover (US$34.99), and it's so completely different that I had to write it up.
Rather than the typical "stick the iPhone 5 into the case" design, designer Richard Moreen had the idea of using a couple of big stretchy silicone bands that cross over (hence the name) the back of the iPhone. Skype update adds auto-reconnect for dropped conversations
Skype has released version 4.5 of its iPhone app, which the company states will auto-reconnect to dropped calls. The app now also allows users to make emergency calls by directing that call to the native dialer. Until now, VoIP apps like Skype haven't handled those types of calls.
Finally, a new toggle switch lets you opt in or out of marketing materials at certain times.
Now if only AT&T would reconnect interrupted calls when my iPhone drops them all the time.

Still settling into Windows 8? Well, it appears that Microsoft's preparing for a sea change, codenamed "Blue," that will alter how it approaches cross-platform updates. According to ZDNet's Mary Jo Foley, an inside source at Redmond has indicated the company's desire to house all Windows Phone, Windows Services, Windows 8 and Windows RT updates under the Blue umbrella, though that won't necessarily indicate simultaneous releases. Nikkei: BlackBerry to stop selling phones in Japan, no longer able to justify the cost
It looks like Japan won't be a part of BlackBerry's BB10 launch plans now or anytime in the foreseeable future. According to a report from Nikkei, BlackBerry has decided to stop selling phones in the country, at least in part because it wasn't able to justify the cost of making the necessary language modifications to its new operation system. As Nikkei also notes, however, BlackBerry has also seen a particularly steep drop in market share in Japan, where it now stands at just 0.3 percent. Greenlight sues Apple over proposed stock changes
Investment firm Greenlight Capital has filed suit against Apple over a proxy proposal for its stock, reports AllThingsD. The proposal would eliminate preferred stock from Apple's charter, but in a statement, Greenlight argues that shareholders should vote against it since it wouldn't maximize their profits. Apple verteilt erste Beta von iOS 6.1.1
Apple hat im Verlauf des gestrigen Tages die erste Vorabversion von iOS 6.1.1 an registrierte Entwickler zum Download freigegeben. Das Build mit der Nummer «10B311» ist mit dem iPad 2 oder neuer, dem iPad mini, dem iPhone 3S oder neuer und dem iPod touch der vierten und fünften Generation kompatibel. Gemäss der Beschreibung von Apple soll diese erste Vorabversion von iOS 6.1.1 vor allem Verbesserungen der Apple-Karten für Japan beinhalten. Die Aussprache bei der Turn-by-Turn-Navigation soll verbessert worden sein und es werden nun schnellere Routen angezeigt. Bei der neuen Beta-Version wird während der Turn-by-Turn-Navigation der Japaner gewarnt, wenn er auf eine Mautstrasse zufährt. Ob bald auch andere Länder von einer deutlich verbesserten Karten-Daten profitieren werden, wurde nicht beschrieben. Sprint sells record 2.2 million iPhones during Q4 2012
Sprint has posted the results of its holiday quarter, during which it suffered a net loss of $1.3 billion. The company blames that partly on subsidies for the Apple iPhone, however, of which it sold a record 2.2 million, compared to the 1.5 million it activated in each of the three previous quarters. 38 percent of Q4 iPhones were sold to new customers. Sprint sold best-ever 2.2M iPhones in holiday quarter
Sprint has announced its fourth-quarter earnings for 2012, which included the sale of 2.2 million iPhones. A full 38% of those went to new customers. Overall, Sprint sold 6.6 million iPhones in 2012, which isn't too shabby.
That 38% new customer acquisition number is good news for the company, too. Overall in 2012, 40% of all iPhone sales went to new customers. Sprint sold 20 million smartphones in total during 2012.
Those 2.2 million iPhones sold last quarter represent an increase from the 1.5 million activated over the last three consecutive quarters.
There was bad news, too. Sprint lost US$0.44 per share in the fourth quarter, or $1.

Dieses Bild ist vor kurzem bei Sony Alpha Rumors aufgetaucht und zeigt - ihr seht es - eine NEX-3N. Dass Sony an dieser Kamera arbeitet, wird schon länger vermutet, das Bild beweist jetzt hoffentlich, dass es sich um mehr als einen Prototypen handelt und wir uns bald mit dem Neuling beschäftigen können. Zu erwarten ist offenbar der gleiche 16-Megapixel-Sensor, der auch in der F3 verbaut ist, außerdem wird über einen elektronischen Zoom spekuliert. EE promises UK 4G to 27 more towns by June 2013
The UK's first 4G network continues to expand coverage, this time extending its catchment to more than 65 towns and cities in total. New LTE locales include the likes of Oxford, Stevenage, Guildford and Blackpool (check the full list of towns after the break) with EE announcing that it currently covers 45 percent of the UK population -- setting up in big cities will do that. Sprint reports Q4 2012 financials: 2.2 million iPhones sold, but net loss of $1.3 billion
Sprint announced its quarterly (and annual) results today, with overall revenues totaling $9 billion, up from the preceding quarter. Sony schreibt wieder schwarze Zahlen

Quartal des laufenden Geschäftsjahres (das bis Ende März geht), also zwischen Oktober und Dezember 2012, erwirtschaftete Sony einen Gewinn von 46,4 Milliarden Yen (etwa 366 Millionen Euro). Apple verteilt weitere 10.8.3-Vorabversion an Entwickler — File:///-Bug behoben
Im November 2012 verteilte Apple die erste Vorabversion des nächsten Minor-Updates für OS X an registrierte Entwickler. In der Nacht auf heute folgte die neunte Beta. Der neue Build mit der Nummer 12D65 kommt nur eine Woche nach der letzten Vorabversion. Laut den Notizen von Apple sollen sich die Entwickler beim Testen des neuen Betriebssystems weiterhin vor allem auf AirPlay, AirPort, das Game Center, die Grafik-Treiber und den Browser Safari konzentrieren.
Wie 9to5Mac berichtet soll der neue Build auch den Fehler mit «File:///» beheben. Gibt man diese Zeichenfolge unter OS X ein, stürzt die entsprechende Anwendung ab. Betroffen sind jedoch nicht alle Anwendungen.

Apple-Stellenanzeige weist auf Siri in OS X hin
Eine neue Stellenausschreibung von Apple unterstützt die Gerüchte, dass Apple im kommenden OS X 10.9 den von iOS bekannten digitalen Sprachassistenten «Siri» integrieren könnte. Für die Stelle als «Siri UI Engineer» setzt Apple nämlich voraus, dass die Kandidaten sich mit Unix auskennen und diese Kenntnisse vor allem auf OS X bezogen sein müssen. Des Weiteren sollten die Kandidaten eine Vorliebe für die Mac-Plattform haben und dazu fähig sein, einfache und elegante Programme zu schreiben. Gemäss der Stellenbeschreibung wird der künftige Apple-Mitarbeiter damit beschäftigt sein, das User Interface einiger Drittapplikationen so zu modifizieren, dass es mit Siri verbunden werden kann. Apple maintains top PC, tablet combined maker for 2012
When iPads are counted along with notebooks, ultrabooks and desktops, Apple's dominance in the tablet space pushes it to the top individual brand of computer maker for the second year running, going from a 17 percent share in 2011 to over 20 percent share in 2012. Following the popular release of the evasi0n "jailbreak" tool for devices running iOS 6 and higher, the team behind it have released at least two updates to fix problems caused by the jailbreak, which has been claimed to have been downloaded more than 1.5 million times since its release on Monday. Apple und Samsung: 103 Prozent des Gesamtgewinns mit Mobiltelefonen
Apple und Samsung teilen den weltweiten mit Mobiltelefonen erzielten Gewinn komplett unter sich auf – wobei Apple allein den mit Abstand größten Teil des Kuchens bekommt. 2012 erzielte der iPhone-Hersteller 69 Prozent des weltweiten Gewinns, Samsung wiederum 34 Prozent. Zusammen liegen die Unternehmen somit bei 103 Prozent.
Wie können Apple und Samsung zusammen mehr als 100 Prozent des Gesamtgewinns erzielt haben? Die skurrile Zahl erklärt sich dadurch, dass die Konkurrenz in erster Linie Verluste einfuhr, so dass die Summe der durch alle beteiligten Unternehmen erzielten Gewinne und Verluste niedriger lag als die Summe der Apple- und Samsung-Gewinne.

Apple, Samsung continue to dominate US smartphone share
As smartphones finally become the majority of the cell phones used by Americans, most of the options -- and all of the profit -- come down to mostly two companies: Apple and Samsung. Apple gains more ground in US smartphone share
ComScore is out with its latest look at how Apple and its competitors are faring in the ongoing war for smartphone market share in the US. According to the firm's latest sampling of 300,000 cellular subscribers, Apple's lead doesn't look to be slowing.
As of December 2012, Apple holds a 36.3% share of the US smartphone market, up two points from its 34.3% share in September 2012. Samsung also gained with a 21% share, while in September 2012 is was at 18.7%. HTC, Motorola and LG comprise the rest of the top five OEMs at 10.2%, 9.1% and 7.1% market share, respectively.

If an iPad's a computer, then Apple is the world's PC shipment leader
Is an iPad a portable media device? A tablet computer? Something entirely "post-PC"? The answer, of course, is "it depends who you ask."
Let's go ahead and define the parent category for iPads (and other tablets like the Kindle Fire, Samsung Galaxy Tab and Google Nexus) as "mobile screens that run a touch-centric OS, don't ship with a hardware keyboard, are larger than a mainstream smartphone and don't offer telephony as a core feature." Call that a tablet, or a "pad" if you must to distinguish it from legacy tablet PCs and the potential fridge toasters of Microsoft's Surface devices.
