Google Chrome launches new Beta Channel for Android
Google's announced a new Chrome Beta channel for its phone and tablet iteration. Google's desktop browser (on Mac Windows, Linux and Chrome OS) already has early access channels to new (and sometimes unstable) builds and now it's going mobile. Google promises updates, likely just as regular as the big screen version, and it'll be compatible with any Android device running version 4.0 or higher. AMD shows off a reference laptop with a quad-core, x86-based Temash chip
Earlier today AMD's director of global business units marketing, John Taylor, joined us on our CES stage to talk chips. Specifically, tablet chips, and laptop chips, and chips for products that have elements of both. Apple publishes Chinese New Year gift guide
Apple has enjoyed a recent burst of success in China, with the new iPad mini selling out faster than supplies can be replenished, but rather than sitting back and enjoying the regional boom, the company is going on the offensive with a new Chinese New Year Gift Guide. Nachdem Mozilla vor zwei Tagen Firefox auf Version 18 hievte, legt nun auch Google nach und veröffentlicht eine neue Version von Chrome. Java zero-day exploit seen in malicious advertising
A previously unknown vulnerability in Java is being used online by hackers, according to security researchers. The 0-day exploit has also reportedly been included in two malware toolkits used by hackers, with the best form of protection currently being to turn off the Java plug-in for all browsers until the hole is patched.

27-inch iMac delays blamed on LG Display
Recent shipping delays for the 27-inch iMac can be blamed on production problems at LG Display, say industry sources reached by DigiTimes. The people claim that LG has been encountering trouble with lamination, limiting the number of screens it can send out for assembly. Only about 100,000 27-inch systems can be shipped each month, the sources say.

Epic Citadel and other 'development showcases' for Oculus Rift available with dev kits in March

Google has released an official Coordinate app for the iPhone. The title is aimed explicitly at businesses that already have Coordinate service licenses. Audi's booth was visually the most arresting we've seen this year because it was both packed to overflowing with people and beautiful shiny things and because the floor, ceiling and walls were really brightly lit. Apple looking into "Location-Based Emergency Information" app for travelers
I'm an American, but I live in the United Kingdom and travel frequently to foreign countries in Europe. If there's one piece of technology that has most benefited the international traveler in the last five years it's been the iPhone. Having a personal computer in your pocket that lets you interact with all facets of your life from anywhere you are is a godsend. That's not even to mention the thousands of apps aimed at international travels that make exploring cities, translating words and languages, and getting you from the train station or airport to your hotel in one piece as easy as tapping a button. Angry Birds Space adds another 30 free levels
Rovio Entertainment has released version 1.4 of Angry Birds Space to the App Store. The free update is sure to make Angry Bird fans happy. Users now have another 30 levels to sling their way through as the birds find themselves in a new galaxy called "Splash" with all new water-based planets, underseas life, and pigs in boats.
But it's not just new levels players can look forward to. Because the worlds are water-based, new physics are involved as you launch your birds to defeat the evil piggies. Phil Schiller downplays chances of cheaper iPhone
Apple's senior VP for worldwide product marketing, Phil Schiller, appears to have dismissed the possibility of a cheaper iPhone in a new interview with the Shanghai Evening News. Hands-on with Archos' Titanium tablet line (video)
Archos' Platinum line of tablets already got the hands-on treatment from us earlier this week, but today we stopped by Archos' CES 2013 booth one more time to take a look at the similarly named Titanium line. Sadly, the smallest of the quartet wasn't available on the show floor, but we did get a look at the other three tablets on hand, ranging from 8-inches to 10.1. All three feature the same set of internal hardware: a dual-core 1.6GHz Rockchip CPU and an unnamed quad-core GPU. The pre-production units we handled were running Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, and all feature high-res IPS screens. Gazelle: 3rd-gen iPad trade-ins spiked after iPad 4, mini announcement
On October 23, 2012 when Apple announced the 4th-generation iPad and iPad mini, the TUAW newsroom was abuzz with questions, one of which was "How many owners of 3rd-generation iPads are going to get rid of their 'old' devices to get a new iPad?" Thanks to Gazelle, a company that accepts trade-ins of Apple gear in return for cold, hard cash, we how have an answer of sorts.
On that day, Gazelle recorded a 700 percent increase in the volume of iPad trade-ins, with 450 percent of that increase happening immediately after the end of the Apple announcement. So, how many of those trade-ins were third-gen iPads? Gazelle's numbers show that a whopping 70 percent of the trade-in offers made were for iPad 3s, with the 32 GB Wi-Fi model being the most popular trade-in.

Asymco breaks down the App Store numbers, finds iTunes economy is a $12 billion annual business
While corporations -- including Apple -- keep financial information locked away except for those items that require public disclosure, the job of Wall Street analysts like Horace Dediu of Asymco is to take bits of information scattered hither and yon and meld them into a more realistic model of how a company is performing. GameStick pulled from Kickstarter due to IP dispute
The Android-based gaming console GameStick was just pulled from Kickstarter, according to an email we just received from Kickstarter support. Its project page is no longer accessible, and the only information given in our support email says it was removed due to, "an intellectual property dispute." As a result, the project page was taken down ("removed from public view," says the email), and it may end up getting canned altogether. "If we are not able to re-post it within 30 days, we will cancel the project," says the email. Yikes! In a Bloomberg Businessweek article this week, writers Ashlee Vance and Aaron Ricadela reveal a conversation between former HP CEO Mark Hurd and Steve Jobs that had not been previously disclosed. New St. Petersburg monument pays homage to Steve Jobs

Amazon AutoRip offers free MP3 copies of album purchases
Amazon has started offering MP3 versions of CDs bought through the retailer. AutoRip will provide users a digital copy of specific albums bought on Amazon, not only for future purchases, but also for any albums bought from a list of over 50,000 by customers in the 15 years since Amazon first opened its Music Store.

As a part of his ongoing tour of China, Apple CEO Tim Cook has met with the chairman of China Mobile, Xi Guohua, Reuters reports. A Mobile spokesman will only say that the two talked about "matters of cooperation" at the carrier's headquarters earlier today, and that no further details can be given out because of a confidentiality agreement. Apple settles Retina artwork lawsuit with Swiss artist
Apple has settled a lawsuit with Swiss photographer Sabine Liewald over the illegal use of his piece titled "Eye Closeup," according to CNET. The company and Liewald originally had an agreement in place to use the image, but Liewald maintained in a court filing that the only permission he gave Apple regarding the photograph was to use it for "layout purposes only." Liewald said Apple misused the rights to the image when it appeared on stage at the MacBook Pro's unveiling and in marketing material -- both of which fall under commercial use.

Amzer was demonstrating its Shatterproof iPhone protective film at CES and while we might not stretch as far as to say it makes your phone shatterproof, we can attest to it being pretty tough. The film is slapped onto the iPhone's face using nothing but a squeegee and some care and then the 4-layer film is set to save your handset from scratches and wear. Nokia says Lumia smartphones did 'better than expected' last quarter, 4.4 million units sold
In the process of drawing up its quarterly results, Nokia has uncovered some good news to report. The manufacturer says its "Lumia portfolio delivered better than expected results" in Q4, selling 4.4 million units compared to just 2.9 million in Q3. The Asha series also did well, with 9.3 million units shifted. Mit Samsung Youm wurden während der CES 2013 flexible OLED-Displays vorgestellt, die diverse Anwendungsmöglichkeiten mit sich bringen. Komplett biegsame Smartphones werden allerdings solange utopisch bleiben, bis es möglich ist, dass nicht nur das Display an sich gebogen und gerollt werden kann, sondern auch das restliche Gehäuse mitsamt Hardware – Stand heute ist das nicht möglich.

Phone Joy is one of many companies putting together controllers for iOS devices, but unlike, say, the Gameloft-only Duo Gamer controller, Phone Joy is aiming to make their button pad as accessible and open as possible. Ersteindruck MacBook Air
Als Selbstbeschenkung gibt es dieses Jahr ein Macbook Air. Mein Gejammer über die iPad-Limitierungen dürfte damit ein Ende haben.
Ähnlich wie das iPad soll das Macbook Air ein weitestgehend schmerzfreier Rechner sein, keine Backup-Probleme erzeugen und nicht ein weiteres Gerät mit nur dort gehaltenen Daten sein. Das Air wird folglich nur mit den nötigsten Programmen ausgestattet und der Rest folgt, wenn ich sie benötige. Da ich mich nicht mit Backups beschäftigen möchte, wird das Air mit entsprechenden bereits vorhandenen Cloud-Diensten wie iCloud und Dropbox verbunden.
Die Installation des frischen Airs sieht damit anders aus als von mir gewohnt. Anstelle komplette Benutzerverzeichnisse per Time Machine zu übernehmen fange ich diesmal zum ersten Mal seit zehn Jahren frisch an und bin gespannt, wie das mittlerweile bei Apple funktioniert.
Nach dem Einschalten richte ich im Assistenten den Admin-Account ein, setze meine üblichen Sicherheitseinstellungen und erstelle einen Benutzer mi

We bet you're yawning at the mention of 4K TVs by now, but here's a slight twist on that high-res concept. LG is showing off the so-called Ultra HD Touch display at its CES booth. It's pretty much what it sounds like: a 4K TV with five-point multitouch. LG isn't demoing this product as a TV -- though technically it could work as your standard set; instead it has the Ultra HD Touch running an interactive program created by the French company Intuiface. We could tap to select and enlarge information on different periods of art history, and we could rotate and perform pinch-to-zoom with individual elements on-screen. Hands-on with Polaroid's M7 Android tablet (video)
Polaroid has both of its new Android tablets on hand at CES, and today we spent a bit of time with each today. The smaller of the two is the M7, which packs a 7-inch, 1,280 x 800 display. Under the hood is a 1.6GHz dual-core A9 processor with 1GB of RAM, and a 2-megapixel front camera sits up top. We found the tablet very responsive when swiping through home screens and jumping in and out of apps. This guy is running Jelly Bean -- with a skin of tile-like widgets running on top (it seemed a little too similar to Windows Phone 8's Metro interface, if you ask us). We can't emphasize enough how prevalent the fingerprints were when we picked up this device. Polaroid had its 7-inch M7 slate on hand at CES 2013, and you best believe there's an older sibling in that other requisite slate size: the 10.1-inch M10. (We dig the straightforward naming scheme with these products, by the way). Like the M7, it sports a 1,280 x 800 resolution. When I think of search I pretty much think of Google. I have tried Bing, and while it is pretty, a lot of my searches just don't turn out as well as they do on Google. If you'd like to try something completely different, let me suggest you get a look at Izik, which is free. Western Digital shows off upcoming WD Black hybrid drives, we goes eyes-on
As devices get thinner and thinner, there's no place in that world for chunky hard drives, and to that end Western Digital has been talking about bringing ultra-thin 5mm hybrid drive technology to the market. The new technology will be branded WD Black, and consist of a 500GB, 5mm thick (or thin) model with 24GB of NAND memory, along with a 1GB, 7mm model that also has 24GB of NAND. Gigabyte shows off an extra-tiny desktop PC with a Core i7, April release date
There was a surprise waiting alongside Gigabyte's Windows 8 tablet duo at CES: an exceptionally small desktop. The as yet unnamed mini PC is a minor marvel of engineering that's much smaller than a Mac mini at an 0.3-liter volume (10 fluid ounces), but still manages to cram in a Core i3, i5 or i7 processor. Valve hardware engineer Jeff Keyzer on Steambox: 'It's going to be different things for different people'
There isn't a hardware standard for Valve's upcoming Steambox concept. TweetDeck for Mac gets ability to embed tweets, more
Official Twitter desktop client TweetDeck has just received a pretty significant update for OS X. The client now allows users to embed tweets directly from the app itself. Previously users had to use Chrome or the web client to embed tweets in their blogs and websites.
The update also brings over 90 bug fixes and enhancements including a new Typeahead search, which autosuggests search preditions based on what you are typing. If you're not a Twitter power user, TweetDeck -- and its newest upgrades -- probably won't appeal to you. However if you live and die by the blue bird, get updating.

Netflix previews family profiles, shows off Super HD and 3D streaming at CES 2013
The current leader in subscription video streaming is Netflix, and today at its Las Vegas hotel suite we saw some of the technology it's planning to stay a step ahead of the competition this year. Apple has released an EFI Firmware Update 2.6 for mid-2012 MacBook Air models. The update fixes several annoying bugs that have been reported in Apple's online help discussion forums. From Apple's knowledge base article:

Apple to lock screenshots of iOS submissions, foil scammers
In a policy change, Apple is altering the rules regarding screenshots associated with apps in an effort to prevent copycat devs from submitting a true set of screenshots of their app during the approval process and changing them later to resemble other, more popular apps. The practice can confuse buyers into purchasing an app that appears to be like a top-selling one, only to find out that the online screenshots don't match the actual program.

Briefly: rise of tablets, FreedomPop delayed, iTunes economy
NDP DisplaySearch has announced that it expects worldwide combined tablet sales, lead by Apple's iPad, to outsell combined notebook sales in 2013 for the first time ever. It also says that smaller tablets -- again led by the iPad mini -- will become the dominant size this year, a fairly obvious conclusion given sales over the holidays. The company says 7-to-8-inch tablets should account for about 45 percent of all tablet shipments, while the 9.7-inch full-size iPad and its competitors will slip to 41 percent of shipments. Tethercell wants to re-imagine batteries
Well, Tethercell isn't so much a "re-imagining" of your run-of-the-mill AA battery, it's more of a remote-controlled battery currently seeking funding on Indiegogo. Of course, we wouldn't write it up if there wasn't an app, and with the app there's actually quite a lot of cool stuff you can do with the Tethercell. I saw a prototype at the annual Showstoppers event (held during CES), and it worked well and looked like a winner -- if it gets funded, of course.
Besides a simple remote control, the Tethercell can be programmed to turn on or off at certain times, control several devices at once, and even warn you when batteries are getting low.

Submitted app screenshots now locked as Apple thwarts scammers
Today Apple announced on their Developer Portal that screenshots for submitted apps will be locked once an app is approved. Until now a developer could change screenshots for an app (the preview images you see in the App Store that help you see what an app looks like) at any time. The new rules mean that now the screenshots for an app cannot be changed until an update for the app is submitted again.

CES Show Report: Pebble
Pebble, the smart watch announced in an exceptionally popular Kickstarter campaign, said at the 2013 CES that its first $150 phone-syncing watches will ship on Jan. 23. In addition to announcing availability for the XO tablet, Vivitar is outing the new 7-inch Camelio slate at CES. Like the XO, it has a family-friendly bent, with optional $20-$30 "personality kits" that customize the user experience with themes like Thomas the Tank Engine. Vivitar had the slate on hand -- and even provided approximate pricing and availability info -- but it's mum on specs for the moment, as it still considers this device to be in the prototype phase. Westinghouse's 110-inch 4K television costs $300,000, is built to order (eyes-on)
We must admit, we were a bit surprised when we heard that Westinghouse -- not exactly the first name in HDTV -- would be bringing a 110-inch 4K HDTV to CES. Naturally, once we got to Vegas, we had to see the thing for ourselves. Its size is as impressive as you imagine, and the native-res 4K video looked really good on such a massive screen, with nearly 180-degree viewing angles and vibrant colors. Muse brain-sensing headband thoughts-on (video)

Ars publishes old-school iTunes image gallery
In honor of the twelfth birthday of iTunes, Ars Technica senior Apple editor Jacqui Cheng has published a photographic family tree of sorts showing the app (and its predecessor SoundJam) through its various incarnations.
It's an amazing trip down memory lane and demonstrates how even how the iTunes 11 MiniPlayer owes a bit of its design to the SoundJam app of pre-OS X days.
