SMS-Phishing-Sicherheitslücke bedroht Android-Systeme
Wie Xuxian Jiang, Associate Professor der Computerwissenschaften an der staatlichen Universität von North Carolina mitteilt, habe man eine akute Sicherheitslücke in Android entdeckt, die es ermöglicht einen SMS-Phishing-Angriff auszuführen. Lightning to micro USB adapter comes to Apple online store
Apple has quietly added another Lightning adapter to its online store, this one converting the Lightning port found on the newest iPhone, iPads and iPod Touch models to a micro USB port. The adapter is capable of syncing as well as charging when used with a compatible micro USB charger of sufficient output to charge the relevant device. Apple had previously offered a 30-pin dock connector-to-micro USB adapter, but limited its sale to Europe only. The new adapter is likely to be sold worldwide and presumably meets EU criteria.

Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition due out November 28 (mostly)
We've heard before about Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition, that slightly upgraded remake of the original great Bioware RPG that's coming soon to the iPad. This version is being put together by Beamdog, and creative director Trent Oster has tweeted that the game will finally arrive on (or at least around) November 28 later on this month. I say "around" because Oster hedges his bets on exactly when Apple's review process will allow the game through on iOS, so it might be a few days after the 28th. But suffice it to say that we're less than a month away from playing the original Baldur's Gate on the iPad.

iPad minis sell out at 5th Ave Apple Store, moderate lines elsewhere
Unfazed by the still-lingering effects of Hurricane Sandy, near-record crowds descended upon the flagship 5th Avenue Apple Store in Manhattan today, snapping up all of the white iPad minis on hand by 11:15 AM EDT and the last of the black models by 12:10 PM.
Topeka Capital Markets analyst Brian White reported that all three models of the white iPad mini were gone in just over an hour, with the 16 GB and 64 GB white minis selling out in about thirty minutes. For the black models, 16 and 32 GB versions sold out by by 11:40 AM, with the last of the 64 GB iPad minis heading out the door at about 12:10 PM.

HTC Opera UL soll offizielles Facebook-Phone werden

Nächster C++-Standard soll 2017 kommen
Der ISO-Standard, der die Programmiersprache C++ definiert, ist gerade mal ein Jahr alt und noch lange nicht von allen Compiler-Herstellern komplett implementiert. Trotzdem arbeitet das zuständige Gremium bereits an der nächsten Version.

Das als ACTA-Nachfolger gehandelte CETA wird nicht die Strafvorschriften zur Verfolgung von Urheberrechtsverletzungen beinhalten, die einer der Gründe für die zahlreiche Kritik an ACTA waren. Apple reportedly to remove Emoji apps from App Store
Now that iOS has provided default support for emoji icons for over a year, the company finally appears to be taking action to remove the seemingly endless number of third-party emoji apps on the App Store.
TechCrunch obtained an email sent by Apple to one particular app store developer, letting the seller know that their previously-approved emoji app would be removed from sale. The email cites App Store guidelines that prohibit the sale of apps that "are not very useful."
It's hard to argue with the logic here, and if a feature is already supported by iOS, the need for a third-party app is indeed non-existent. Apple first introduced emoji support in iO

IDC: Android at 75 percent smartphone market share
Seventy-five percent of the smartphones shipped last quarter ran Google's Android operating system, according to new figures out from market analysis firm IDC. The new total represents a jump of nearly 20 percentage points over Android's market share for the same quarter last year, with much of Android's growth coming from corresponding drops in share for Nokia's Symbian platform and Research In Motion's BlackBerry operating system. Year-over-year, Android smartphone shipments were up 91.5 percent, while shipments of smartphones running Apple's iOS were up 57.3 percent.

iOS 6.0.1 jailbroken
iOS 6.0.1 has only been out for about 24 hours, but now jailbreakers can rejoice -- the newest iteration of the iPhone Dev Team's Redsn0w can be used to jailbreak certain iOS 6.0.1 devices.
The news comes from Redmond Pie, which tested the jailbreak and found that since it takes advantage of the Limera1n exploit, it only works on devices that use an A4 chip or lower. That means that if you want to jailbreak your iPhone 5, any of the new iPads or the fifth-generation iPod touch, you'll have to wait. It was inevitable. The iPad mini has just started hitting stores, and already some enterprising young men at Soundwaves of Tampa have come up with a way to install the cutest iPad into the dashboard of a 2012 Toyota Corolla.

Briefly: DM1 update, iPad gains accidental touch detection
Fingerlab has launched an update for the iPad version of its iOS drum machine app, DM1. Version 3.0 includes new options for importing samples from the device's iPod library, the built-in microphone, AudioPaste, Dropbox, and a shared iTunes folder. Effects are also now applied only to selected tracks, and 22 brand new drum kits are included. In celebration of the update, Fingerlab has also temporarily reduced the price to $4.

iPad mini selling out; iPhone 5 stock low at US carriers
Retail supplies of the iPad mini have sold out in a number of stores worldwide, accounts say. Apple is now selling its Lightning to micro USB adapter on the US online Apple Store, and presumably in brick-and-mortar stores as well. The adapter plugs into your Lightning dock enabled device (iPhone 5, new iPad or iPad mini) and then accepts a micro USB plug. Apple loses right to "iPhone" brand in Mexico
Apple's scheduled release of the iPhone 5 in Mexico might have to be put on hold thanks to a court ruling that could ban sales of iPhone-branded products in the country. iFone, a Mexican telecommunications company which registered its name in 2003, has thus far been on the winning end of a legal battle with Apple. El Universal reports that a court in Mexico City has denied Apple's request for an injunction that would have allowed the company to continue selling its smartphones without issue.

News: Report: Apple loses iPhone trademark in Mexico
Apple has lost the rights to the iPhone trademark in Mexico, according to a report from El Universal. The Mexican company iFone, which registered its brand in 2003, has been confirmed as the legitimate owner of the trademark. Apple originally sought to prevent iFone from using its name. Study: Amazon gaining on Netflix in alternative TV market
Amazon's Instant Video streaming service posted a sizable jump in usage since February, though Netflix remains the market leader by far. This according to a new survey from 451 Research's ChangeWave service, which looked at use among the paid alternative TV providers. The survey found that use of Amazon's service had ticked up five percentage points since February, while use of Netflix had dropped slightly.

Behind the scenes at MacTech with Boinx

Android 'smishing' vulnerability discovered by NCSU researchers; Google has a fix incoming
The art of smishing (SMS-Phishing) has been practiced for some time, but a discovery by the wizards at NC State University has uncovered a new vulnerability that could bring the aforesaid act back into the spotlight. Forstall left out of Ive's iPhone design meetings
Apple's former head of iOS, Scott Forstall, was left out of iPhone design meetings held by lead designer Jonathan Ive, according to Bloomberg sources. Despite the importance of software to the iPhone platform, the previously-known conflict between Ive and Forstall is said to have been so deep that the two executives were rarely in the same room. iPad mini ships with 5-watt power supply
The newest full-sized iPad ships with a 12-watt power supply that makes it possible to charge up the device much faster than with the 10-watt adapter used in previous models. So when the iPad mini was announced, there was a lot of speculation about whether or not the diminutive iPad would include that 12-watt adapter. A MacRumors reader was able to purchase an iPad mini at a Walmart store on Wednesday and confirmed that it is the same 5-watt adapter (picture at right) that is included with iPhone models.

iHouseWatcher is a great idea with flawed execution
iHouseWatcher is a free, 4 channel house monitor that that's ready to work with a Mac or PC with a webcam, or an iOS device you're willing to leave at home.
I downloaded the universal app to my iPad and my iPhone. After creating a free account, I identified my iPad up as the camera, left the house, logged in with my iPhone and received video and audio from home. Clever.
Now on to the drawbacks. First, the iPad must be in portrait mode, or the picture was not oriented correctly. Also, the video feed looked fine on the local iPad, but was rotated sideways on my iPhone. The app only recognizes the iPad's front-facing, lower resolution camera. Not good.

ComScore: US smartphone share leveled off in September, Android and iPhone continued their reigns
We're so used to constant flux in smartphone market share that it's a surprise when things don't move. Yet that's what we're facing today. ComScore found that the US smartphone field in September was virtually unchanged from where it was in August, even down to smaller players like Symbian and Windows Phone. Mad Catz has began offering its Tritton Pro True 5.1 Surround Sound Headset in five countries on Friday, including the Canada, France, Germany, the UK, and the US. Korea demands iOS Maps change; emoji apps out of App Store
The South Korean government is demanding that Apple change the name of a chain of islets in iOS 6 Maps, the Korea Times reports. The chain is known as Dokdo in Korean, but Apple also lists the English (Liancourt Rocks) and Japanese (Takeshima) names for the land, reflecting the fact that both Korea and Japan dispute the land's ownership. Amtrak for iPhone adds Passbook support
Apple's Passbook app is starting to gain momentum, with more apps now providing support for tickets, payment and coupons. The latest comes from the National Railroad Passenger Corporation, AKA Amtrak, which released version 1.3 of its free iPhone app today.
The app makes it possible to move an Amtrak eTicket to Passbook by selecting the action button on the eTicket screen. Once there, the eTicket is accessible and viewable with a tap on the Passbook app, and may then be scanned by an Amtrak conductor.
Amtrak for iPhone also provides the ability to buy tickets, find train status, look up station locations and contact numbers, view scheduled and more.

A teardown of the fourth-generation iPad shows very few differences inside or out, notes iFixit. As advertised it upgrades to a 1.4GHz A6X processor, a 1.2 megapixel front-facing camera and a Lightning connector, but many other design traits are essentially unchanged. Nexus 7 vs. iPad mini im Falltest
Wie wäre es mal wieder damit, ein paar wertvolle Geräte durch die Gegend zu werfen, um dann zu sehen, wie dieses sich beim Aufprall gegen den Beton behauptet? Apple's re-written Samsung statement has been published
Apple has re-written a court-ordered apology to Samsung for accusing the company of copying certain aspects of the iPad. A UK court ordered the statement to be written back in July. Apple complied earlier this week, publishing a brief note on its website, but Robin Jacob, the judge in the case, did not like the tone or content of the statement and gave Apple 24 hours to re-write it.

Phil Schiller to provide further testimony to Samsung Electronics
Phil Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of worldwide marketing, will take the stand again in the ongoing legal battle between his company and Samsung.
The U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California has ordered both Samsung and Apple to make a number of executives available for "not more than three hours." Schiller was among those requested of Apple. He is expected to appear "no later than November 5, 2012."

MIT prof and student discover algorithm for predicting trending Twitter topics
Predicting the future of Twitter's trending topics is, as of right now, an impossibility. But two folks at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology may have cracked the code with an algorithm they're saying predicts -- with 95 percent accuracy -- the topics that will trend in the next hour and a half. Es scheint so als wäre das neue iPad Mini und ein Lightning Connector nicht gerade der massive Anreiz sich zu beeilen mit dem Kauf eines neuen iPad. Die Schlangen die man überhaupt findet, sind eher minimal im Vergleich und so kommt z.B. in München jeder der eins will wohl auch zu seinem Konsumwunsch. Neusten Analysen zufolge, nimmt in diesem Jahr die sogenannte Loyalitätsrate der iPhone Besitzer zum ersten Mal nach fünf Jahren ab. Resizable app icon concept: iOS meets Windows Phone 8
Visual and user interface designer Max Rudberg has cooked up his own take on how a future version of iOS could be updated to offer app icons that can be resized to offer more information and features. Specifically, the video below shows the Settings icon being expanded into a pane that occupies the full width of the iPhone 5's screen and features toggles for Bluetooth and other settings. The Clock icon is shown expanded to include alarm toggles, and the Mail icon is enlarged to display inbox subject lines.

Google said to augment Google Wallet with physical card
It would appear that Google is planning to augment its NFC-based Google Wallet payment system with a physical component in the coming weeks. Images have emerged online purporting to show off the new Google Wallet Card, which would be tied to a user's Google Wallet account and take the place of any credit cards a user also has attached to that account. The news comes amid rumors that Google was planning to update its Google Wallet app to include iPhone support, even though there are no iPhone or iOS device models that support NFC.

Late on Thursday, Apple updated its two photo-oriented programs iPhoto and Aperture, to versions 9.4.2 and 3.4.2 respectively. Both share some commonalities in the updates, but Aperture in particular has addressed a number of issues and enhancements with the new version. In addition, the company issued a small, security-oriented update of Safari 6, which now at v6.0.2 (and currently only available from the Mac App Store) exclusively -- thus far -- for users of Mountain Lion 10.8.2 and higher.

Report: FTC recommending US government sue Google
A staff report from the Federal Trade Commision has reportedly recommended that the US government should pursue legal remedies against Google for violating antitrust laws. The review sprung from fears that Google is demanding sales embargoes against products that use patents required to be licensed under fair, reasonable, and nondiscriminatory terms (FRAND) terms rather than engage in the required good-faith negotiations required by owners holding with standards-essential patents.

Mac Game of the Week: Funky Smugglers offers funky fun
Funky Smugglers continues the trend of bringing iOS games back to the Mac. It's from Polish developers 11 bit Studios (who also made the Anomaly: Warzone Earth series), and it's a somewhat silly but still addictive arcade game, where you have to use an airport scanner to try and grab offensive and dangerous items off of (mostly) reasonable air travelers.
The really killer part of this one is the presentation: Not only does the app kick off with a hilarious bit of live action video, but the funky sounds and songs of the game are really terrific. Report: Motorola filed for ITC appeal in August Apple loss
A recently-made-public document from the US International Trade Commission shows that Motorola Mobility filed a notice of appeal with the Federal Circuit on September 19. Motorola is appealing the ITC opinion from August 24 in which the trade standards body found that Apple did not violate three of Motorola's asserted patents, with one remaining patent of the original four being sent to a judge for a ruling.

Atari 2600 classic Outlaw reborn on iOS today
As promised last week, a new take on the classic Atari 2600 title Outlaw has arrived on the App Store today for iPhone and iPad. Atari's re-imagining keeps the original's Wild West theme, but applies it to touch-based shooting gallery gameplay.
Outlaw is a free game supported by in-app purchases for additional bullets -- basically allowing you to play the game more -- and power-up items. You can also purchase more powerful guns, including some high-tech weapons like a lightning bolt-shooting Tesla rifle.
It's a fairly simple game, but it's nevertheless worth a shot (sorry!) for the low, low price of free. You can check out its cartoon-
