AT&T announces cloud-based storage, 5 GB free for iOS users

AT&T's apparently jumping into the cloud storage fray with a new program called AT&T Locker. The service will provide up to 5 GB of free storage via an app to iOS users, with extra charges for any storage above that. To get started, AT&T users can grab the app right now, and then upload and access photos or videos on the app, or then share them off to other networks like Facebook, Twitter or (it's back!) MySpace. A Chipworks teardown of the iPad mini has confirmed that the A5 processor in the tablet is a 32nm design manufactured by Samsung. The A5 premiered in the iPad 2, but was originally produced using a 45nm manufacturing process. The switch to 32nm happened around the same time the third-generation iPad was introduced, retrofitting the iPad 2 with improved power efficiency and battery life.

Wow, it's a busy day at Apple. First we had the iOS 6.0.1 release, then developers got the iOS 6.1 beta and a new version of Xcode, and now Apple's dropped iPhoto, Aperture, and Safari updates for the Mac. iPhoto received a bump to version 9.4.2, with a surprising number of new features and fixes. AT&T launches AT&T Locker for iOS devices

AT&T announced today that its AT&T Locker cloud-based storage service is now available in the App Store for iOS devices. The service, available on Google's Play Store since September, gives users 5GB of cloud storage for free, with the option to add storage for a monthly fee. iOS 6.1, Xcode 4.6 betas arrive in Dev Center

In addition to rolling out iOS 6.0.1 today, Apple has released a beta build of iOS 6.1 to developers. The update supports legacy devices dating back to the iPhone 3GS and newer products including the iPhone 5 and fourth-generation iPad. A build is not yet available for the iPad mini. Apple has also introduced a developer preview of Xcode 4.6 to coincide with the iOS 6.1 beta. Apple loses right to iPhone brand name in Mexico

Apple has lost an injunction bid that would have allowed it to continue selling iPhone-branded products in Mexico. A court in Mexico City handed down a ruling last Thursday denying Apple's injunction request on the grounds that the iPhone brand is too phonetically similar to iFone, a brand belonging to a Mexican company that registered its name four years prior to Apple's filing for the iPhone brand mark. The decision stems from a legal action that Apple initially filed in 2009 requesting that the company cease using the iFone brand in order to head off the possibility of consumer confusion.

Siri vs. Google Voice Search- may the best robot helper win

Google released an update to its free search app that includes much better voice searching. It offers a challenge to Siri in terms of speed and search capability, although there are points of comparison and there are differences as well. First, I have to say, Google Voice Search is fast. Very fast. You see your query in real time as your are speaking it. Conversely, Apple's Siri often takes several seconds to reply to a query and, in my experience, often misses what I've said. Nutzer eines iPhone 5 müssen auf aussergewöhnliche Weise dieses Update einspielen, da iOS 6 auf einem iPhone 5 mit einem Bug des Firmware-Updaters zu kämpfen hat. Zwar kann auch mit einem iPhone 5 das Update auf iOS 6.0.1 Over-the-air (OTA) installiert werden, jedoch wird im Zuge bzw. in Vorbereitung auf das eigentliche Update eine temporäre Updater-App installiert, da sich der fehlerhafte Software-Updater nicht selbst updaten kann. Der in iOS 6 integrierte Software-Updater wird also praktisch von aussen durch die Update-App repariert.

Early analysis of the mini shows that, internally, it is more than just a small version of the iPad. Pentagon shifting away from BlackBerry only IT support

The Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA), responsible for technology management at the Pentagon and other defense-related agencies, posted a request for proposal on October 22 seeking companies capable of managing devices made by Apple, Google, and RIM, with the intent of awarding the contract in April. US Cellular bringing LTE to 30 additional markets on November 5th

US Cellular announced on Wednesday that it will increase its LTE network coverage by 30 new markets on November 5th. The first territories to be be summarily blessed are: Iowa, Wisconsin, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Illinois, Maryland, Missouri, New Hampshire, Vermont, Virginia and West Virginia. While this is great news for customers who call these states home, the carrier has yet to detail which cities will be making the jump to 4G. The status of official CableCARD tuner support for Windows 8

With the official launch of Windows 8 comes the official support of premium cable content via one of the various CableCARD tuners originally designed for Windows 7 Media Center. Silicon Dust is at the front of the pack as Media Center on Windows 8 is already officially supported and the documentation is available for both the HDHomeRun Prime as well as the ATSC or QAM HDHomeRun. Apple to open 30 to 35 new stores in 2013

In Apple's newly released 2012 annual report to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, the company revealed a glimpse into its retail plans for the upcoming fiscal year. Among the tidbits of info is Apple's forecast of opening an additional 30 to 35 retail outlets worldwide by the end of 2013. Apple fans living abroad will be happy to learn that of the possible 35 new locations, three-quarters are expected to be opened outside the United States. This number falls in line with Apple's recent retail trends, with the company opening 33 stores in 2012 and a whopping 40 in 2011. The company currently boasts 390 stores in 14 countries.

ICC goes on lawsuit spree, sues Apple, others over patent

A "patent troll" type company that owns a single patent (not their own invention) has added Apple and its FaceTime and and Messages to a long list of companies it is suing for patent infringement. The patent, granted in 2006, concerns "an inter-carrier messaging service providing phone number only experience." It was assigned to the Texas company Intercarrier Communications expressly for the purpose of suing other companies. Apple and a number of other companies have been sued over the patent in the last week.
